I picked up two of these at the BF price. They have been quiet during play back so far. Just waiting for LG to get their act together and re-release the DV update.

    Severe App Deficiency

I bought this to replace an older Sony that had lost its wits. This LG looked like an upgrade: WRONG. After installing the LG, I discovered two fatal flaws: It comes preinstalled with only TWO streaming apps, NetFlix and YouTube, and it has NO capability for installing any more apps! NONE whatsoever! I couldn't believe this, so I researched it and found web forums full of people equally dumbfounded that it's simply impossible to install more streaming apps on this thing. Why would LG even build something so app-deficient? The BestBuy rep I had bought this from couldn't believe it either, when I took it back the very next day. Naturally, BestBuy swapped it out with no problems for a new version of the old Sony player we'd been using, and all is now well. Bottom line: If you need more apps than NetFlix and YouTube (and most of us do), DO NOT BUY THIS UNIT.

I originally bought this DVD player to use with my new Samsung TV, but decided to plug it in to my main TV (75" laser-driven 3D set) because of 3D display problems with my older DVD player. I guess I'll soon be back to Best Buy for another new DVD player as a replacement for that older model.

The LG-UP970 has the potential to be 5 star; however, there are issues. We'll start with those, so we can end on the positives. Dislikes: 1. The remote looks like one from a low end device. For it to work, it must be pointed directly at the device; close doesn't count. The on/off button will turn on the TV (non-LG) with the player, but it won't turn the TV off, thus requiring the TV remote. The volume selector does not work with a non-LG TV, thus requiring the TV remote. The response time is a bit slow on occasion. 2. To use closed caption, you must set it up before you start a movie. It cannot be turned on/off during play, which can be done with any other players I have. This is very annoying. 3. There are only two streaming sources available: Netflix and YouTube. Also, there doesn't appear any way to add others to the device menu. Presumably, you will be pairing this with a Smart TV, so it's not necessarily a deal breaker, just odd that LG doesn't include more. I have owned LG TVs which certainly offered more. 4. The device's physical size is wide, taking up much more space than my other 3D BD devices. Fortunately, I have plenty of room available; but, if space is limited, it could be problematic LIkes: 1. Set up is very easy. Connect to TV, plug it in, connect to wi-fi, and you are good to go. 2. The video quality is excellent, especially when connected to a 4K UHD TV. Watching a 3D movie is amazing. People and objects look so real, it's almost like they are in the room with you. 3. Audio is very good, though one would expect better on a $300 player. 4. I have not experienced the noise other reviewers have mentioned, so no problem yet with that. With the caveats of the cited dislikes, I would certainly recommend the UP970, especially if you can buy it on sale.

I have yet to experience any of the problems mentioned in the previous reviews. Time will tell. On a side note, it would be nice if this unit accepted RF signals, or had a reliable remote app.

Dreaded upgrading due to costs but when the plasma went out, I had to go all the way. This LG player was the perfect match for the LG OLED TV. Did firmware update immediately and have had not issues at all. Nice quiet operation and looks glorious. Nice, fast interface as well.

    Still no Dolby Vision Support

I went to a store to pick up a Player that supported Dolby Vision since my LG OLED has Dolby Vision Support. While I was in the store, the Best Buy person in the Magnolia Department told me that the OPPO was the only player that supported Dolby Vision. I had already seen that there were reviews online that rated the Dolby Vision support on this player and the reviews were impressive. So we found one of these in the store and it was less than half the cost of the OPPO so I picked the LG. (I also felt it would work better with my LG TV.) I additionally picked up a copy of Spiderman Homecoming with DV Support. When I got home, I unboxed the unit and connected it to my amp. I installed some update that it was waiting to install and put in the movie. The movie looks washed out and gray. It's absolutely terrible. Upon further research online, there are a large number of other owners that purchased this player and received a DV update from LG. For some unknown reason, LG released another update later that removed DV support from the player. LG has apparently promised they would add support by the end of this year, but it still hasn't happened and there's only three weeks left. I have serious doubt's LG will commit. I purchased a very expensive 4K LG TV when they first came out. LG stated they would be able to add support for 4K secured content, for things like Netflix, later via a software and/or hardware update. Two years after being told they were going to release the upgrade, they never did and I was stuck. It looks like they have just done it again with their vaporware. It's a shame because I love their OLED TV's, but this is crazy...
