To begin, the picture does not do this speaker justice. It is about as large as a typical suitcase. To quote a euphemism, I would say it is built like a tank. There is a handle built in that makes it easy to carry, and there is a second handle that extends and allows you to pull the speaker on its built in wheels. The unit includes a cord to plug in to the wall, although it also has a battery that is supposed to last 20 hours or so. (I have not tested the battery life claim as I am typically somewhere with electrical outlets.) Aesthetically, the top display can be changed (through the LG XBOOM application on a smartphone) to a few different animations. The lighting around the woofer can also be changed to different colors. There are also two strobe lights, one on the top and one on the bottom, that can flash in synchronization to the music as well. Lighting wise, the unit is pretty nice. All of that is useless if a speaker system does not sound good. The device connects easily through bluetooth to a streaming device and, to me, sounds great, especially when the sound enhancement is turned on. While this is obviously subjective, I found the bass to be rich and deep without being too overdone or overpowering for the rest of the higher frequencies. There is a stark difference when enhancement is on or off, and I prefer having it on. Through the application, it is possible to tune the speaker yourself, but there are only three sliders that can be adjusted for the bass, midrange, and treble. Allowing the sound enhancement to do its thing works just fine for me. The volume of the speaker is great. At about half volume, my wife and daughter were both complaining about the music being too loud. I haven't taken the speaker up to full blast yet because I have not had the need. I imagine my perception of the volume would be different outside, but I have only used the speaker inside thus far. The application allows you to perform some "DJ-esque" things to the music while you are playing. The application can also be used for playing music from playlists, but I found that feature too complicated and laborious to use. It is a lot easier to use the music application built right into your smartphone or streaming device to play your already built playlists. I believe there is a setting that allows you to link two speakers together, but that is a feature I have not explored as I have only this single speaker. I also have not tested the water resistance of the unit, so I do not have any guidance or feedback on that. There is also the ability to plug in a microphone and use it for karaoke. (I am guessing that could also be used to put together a quick, makeshift PA station as well.) There is a guitar jack as well. If you prefer not to stream via bluetooth, a USB drive can also be plugged in. (That is another feature I did not use, however.) One thing I feel obligated to mention is that my first XBOOM XL7 speaker started smoking (literally) immediately when I plugged it in and turned it on the first time. The smoke smelled like something electrical burning. I am chalking that up to some type of fluke issue with that speaker. LG replaced the unit and I have not experienced any issues with the replacement speaker. Ultimately, this is a huge speaker that feels very solid and provides some very good-sounding music. I also like the LEDs and lighting effects. I was really impressed and would be hard pressed to think of a reason to not give five stars. (Yes, it is heavy, but that's just part of the deal. You don't buy this type of speaker because you're looking for the lightest, most portable option.) If you are looking for a loud, portable (albeit bulky and heavy) speaker for a party, this unit would definitely be a good option.
