Good sound for a large room
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Pros: Good quality sound Loud enough for a large room Small enough to pack in a beach bag Water Dust Sand and Drop proof User friendly with buttons that light up Long charge Button lock feature Battery indicator Cons: Lock box not big enough to fit phones. Just a couple keys and credit cards It's not surround sound. Sound comes out of one side, bass comes out of the other side. That's all the information i could get from using it. It's a great product, but if i wanted to fill a bigger space with sound, i would need either two of these or the bigger model.

Great outdoor speaker
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This speaker has great sound with a little bass to it. It feels durable. I like that you can charge devices with it and that it is long lasting. I dropped it in water and submerged it with no issues. When it goes under water it actually stops playing. It didn't sound water logged or anything when I pulled it out of the water. Some things to note that the water proof compartment isn't big enough to hold most phones. There is a charging dock in there though which is a nice touch. Also it floats but not in a manner where you can listen to music while it's floating. This is great for outdoor gathers, boating, paddle boarding, or hanging out by the pool.

Hardy Bluetooth Speaker
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I received this speaker in exchange for a review. There are a lot of Bluetooth speakers out there, so what distinguishes this device from competitors? Clearly the top selling point would be the LifeProof feature set. It's waterproof, dust proof, drop proof and it floats. I received the Laguna clay color, which is gray with neon green/yellow accents. The packaging was nice. Setup was relatively easy once I got the device powered on and in pairing mode. You have to hold the power button for a few seconds to turn the device on, which led me to fail to turn on the speaker several times when getting started. Once connected to my phone, I was able to control the volume with the physical buttons and the controls on my phone. I did occasionally notice a lag in the volume taking effect, but it wasn’t often. This speaker can put out a lot of sound. I had a chance to listen to it in a few different environments, both indoors and out. I found that the it could reach a sufficient volume in every environment. I tried it out with both music and podcasts and was satisfied with the performance. The range of Bluetooth was good as well, so my phone didn’t need to be directly by the speaker when playing. I wasn’t able to get to a pool, beach or other waterway with this speaker, so I tested out the waterproofing claims in the bathtub. The claims that it will float are true, which is cool. Also, I found that it still works after being submerged, although some water will continue to pour out of different crevices as you move it around after pulling it out of the water. The watertight container on the bottom kept the contents dry, as well. There is a cover that snaps into place around the power port as well and that seemed keep the device sufficiently protected, even when I submerged it. Overall, the device stood up to the challenge of water as expected. There are a few cons. The charging cable is specific to this device. Instead of a USB cable of some sort, there is a small round adapter connected to the power plug. Due to the power requirements of the internal battery, this can probably be explained. However, I wish LifeProof had put some kind of branding or logo on the charger plug. For $200, it would be nice to have a clearly identifiable charger. Additionally, the watertight compartment on the bottom is too small to be useful for much. It includes a USB and audio port, but there only enough room for a small phone or music player. There isn’t much space for a very large cord.. The inclusion of those ports feels more like an afterthought. It would be more useful to store a few credit cards, some cash or a key or two. This would be a great device for those who want a compact speaker that can be used near a body of water. It would be great for the beach, a pool or on a boat. Overall, LifeProof seems to have done a good job in making a durable wireless speaker.

Very solid speaker!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The first thing that you will notice when you pick up this speaker is how solid it feels in your hand. It is definitely the most solid feeling bluetooth speaker I have ever had. You can tell that they really paid a lot of attention to detail when designing and building this speaker. Although the speaker does not come with a lot of documentation on hoe to operate it, it is fairly straightforward and easy to get setup if you've ever used a bluetooth speaker like this before. I had it connected and was up and running in a matter of minutes. This speaker makes a lot of claims about being submersible and dirt and dust and snow proof and even droppable from a few feet...and of course I had to test them all (except for the snow, we are a little short on that this time of the year). But before I get to that I will talk about what this mainly is...a speaker. I have to say the sound quality didn't wow me by any means. I have a smaller bluetooth speaker that has much better sound quality than this one does. The AQ10 is very heavy on the mids. Not a whole lot of bass or really high end. It all just kind of lives in the middle with some very subtle bass..but not thumping by any means. I wont say its horrible, but I was definitely expecting a little more. But it is still very listenable. If you combine it with everything else this speaker can do...it makes it worthwhile in my opinion. Now onto the other stuff. The first thing I did just for fun was filled up my bathtub and then I just threw the speaker in there. It did float, and did continue to work. Next I pushed it under the water for a little while...probably not more than a foot. WHen I took the speaker out...it still worked just fine! The next thing I did was took it outside. We had been doing some landscaping work...so I put it out in the dirt and let it roll around a little bit...and everything still worked perfectly. Just ran it under some water to rinse the dirt off and it was good as new again! This probably is the perfect speaker if you like to spend a lot of time outdoors or in the water or on a boat. You don't have to worry about it getting wet or falling in the lake or getting dirty or anything like that. It will keep going, and going, and going. While the sound quality isn't perfect, it does get quite loud and would be perfect for most outdoor activities. So because of that...I would highly recommend this to anyone who is active, loves to be outside, and wants to take their music with them. One other side note...the 13 hour battery life claim is dery accurate...and the built in dry box does work perfectly to keep your things dry. I put a folded up piece of paper in there when I threw it in my bathtub and it came out completely dry!

Underwhelming
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have owned and used many Bluetooth speakers and I was initially excited to get the AQ10, but my expectations were dashed pretty quickly. * The sound and balance is pretty good at low to moderate volumes, but if you crank it up for situations that need volume the AQ10 audio gets out of balance and too heavy on the ear piercing treble side of things, and the AQ10 offers no equalizer options to tailor the sound. * Aspects of the design seem poorly thought out and implemented. The water-tight compartment for example has a USB port and an audio aux-in -- but 1) the aux-in port is so close to the fixed wall side of the compartment that many aux-cables cannot be inserted because all but smallest cable shroud will make it too large, and 2) the compartment is so small that I couldn't find any audio device that actually fit inside of it when closed to allow either of the internal ports to be useful. Maybe an iPod shuffle or nano would fit, but I don't have either of those, and then you'd also need to be able to fit an aux cable and maybe a USB cable as well. The water-box is fine for cards, ID, and a key or two, but on the AQ10 the compartment is just too small to make the water-box USB and aux-in port all that useful except in "just right" use cases. It doesn't hurt to have them there, so not really a minus except that it's one of several evidences that the AQ10 wasn't really thought out all that well. * The charger is not USB, it's proprietary. Every other Bluetooth speaker I've ever used, including some larger and more powerful than the AQ10, have made their charging port a USB cable of some sort which is fantastic for a portable speaker that may need to be charged in a variety of locations -- in the car, at the beach, or wherever else you have a USB port but not a convenient wall outlet. But the AQ10 deviates from that convenient standard and forces you to use a proprietary charger that can only be charged from a wall outlet. 10 years ago that might have been OK, but with virtually every other Bluetooth speaker using USB charging it's a remarkable design oversight for something designed to be portable to be dependent on something so decidedly not portable-friendly. The AQ10's one-and-only compelling feature is that it floats and is ruggedized. So if that's your main need then the AQ10 just might be the Bluetooth speaker you're looking for. But for everybody else you can easily do much better for the same $ or less.

Questionable Value
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Lifeproof Aquaphonics AQ10 sets out to be a rugged outdoor bluetooth speaker champion. Unfortunately, it falls short in the one category it truly needs to shine in: sound quality. At low volumes the speaker is fairly average. Reasonable bass and treble, but heavy in the mid section. Once you start cranking up the volume the bass quickly turns into distortion. While it can certainly fill a room the overall sound quality pales in comparison to bluetooth speakers half or even less of the asking price. So, what are you paying for? Well, it is built like a tank for one. Very rugged design and waterproof to 1.2m for up to 30 minutes. Oh, and it floats too. It is also MIL-spec shock and dust proof. It is a beast when it comes to the build quality which, I suppose, is what I would expect from Lifeproof. Battery life is pretty good at ~10-13 hrs depending on how loud you have it. The buttons light up which is nice if you take it camping at night. Only other drawback for me is the lack of USB charging. Having to carry around yet another transformer just doesn't cut it for me. I think Lifeproof has a solid concept with the Aquaphonics line, but the mediocre sound quality is its achilles heel. Maybe next year's model will refine things.
