Great outdoor speaker for the rugged traveler

What I like the most about this unit is it's weight, it looks heavier than that it is. Weighing in at only 4 kilos without storing anything in the dry box. You'll get 13 -15 hours of use playing music half that if you need to charge your devices. Yes this speaker can also help charge your phone or tablet while your traveling or soaking up the sun at the beach. Another nice feature is the ability to strap this speaker outside your backpack using the loop holes on the exterior. Where ever your travels take you, rest assure that you'll have a good time with the ability to charge your devices and listen to some tunes.

Poor bass but has unique standout features

SUMMARY: The Aquafonics AQ11 is a well built waterproof speaker with unique features, but has a noticeable lack of bass and a price tag that might be hard to swallow. PROS: - Sturdy water resistant (IP67) design - Great battery life - Dry box for storing/charging phone - Lots of connectivity options CONS: - Bass performance is very poor for a speaker this size - Speaker is very directional REVIEW: I was very excited for this speaker but overall I have been disappointed. The design is rugged and it survived a summer trip to the pool with no issues. The dry box kept my phone dry and connected with no issues as well. However, for a speaker this size the audio quality is poor and the bass in almost nonexistent. It does get very loud but at higher volumes the quality gets increasingly more distorted. Additionally, the speaker drivers are only located on one side which results in audio that is very directional, which is disappointing when many competitors have 360 degree audio. I did like the ability to lock the buttons to prevent accidental presses and the drybox is a nice unique feature that helps differentiate this product from the pack. BOTTOM LINE: If the unique features are something that you are looking for and you don't mind the lack of bass, this speaker will get the job done.

I bought this because it sounded pretty good, and it claimed to be waterproof; however, as soon as water touched one of the sides it stopped working. Really good speaker just NOT waterproof as they claim.

This speaker does one thing very well and that is the fact that it is waterproof. It is amazing for anyone who spends a lot of time on a boat or near water. The durability is decent and I think it can withstand a decent amount of abuse although it feels kind of cheap because its mostly plastic with a metal grill. My biggest complain is the sound quality. It just did not seem to get as loud as It should for a speaker that large. It was enough to but seems like for the price and size it should be louder. The dry box on the bottom is a nice addition but it Is small and would not even fit my iphone 7 plus with a case on it. If you are in need of a waterproof speaker then this is definitely the one to get. If water proof isn't a necessity I would get something that has better sound quality.

Overall, I'd say this is a great portable speaker. You can see from the product description that it is built to be durable for outdoor use. They definitely put some thought into what that means. Intended Use: I plan for this speaker to be a gift, but wanted to make sure that it would be good enough for it's intended purpose on my end. My father loves sailing, and built a '32 Ford with as much accuracy as possible. For the car, this means that it doesn't have a radio. Well, with a top decibel rating of 100, this should be great for driving around with the windows open. For the boat, this is supposed to be waterproof to some extent, but their design allows for precautions that other speakers do not. The frame of the speaker has gaps at each corner to make handles, but these gaps are also a perfect size for running a rope through to make sure that it'll stay on-board no matter what angle the boat is at. The waterproofing will be more than enough for any spray, and the secret container can protect any valuables (phone, wallet, keys) that you really don't want to have sliding around while sailing. Is the sound quality like a Bose speaker? Not quite. But, would I take a Bose speaker out on the water? Not a chance.

I am an audiophile with a very discriminating ear, and couldn't wait to unpack the Aquaphonics AQ11 and give it a try. Here are some of my observations: * Designed for both indoor and active outdoor use. * Rechargeable battery which is advertised to last a whopping 15 hours. * Has front-facing speakers and advertised to reach 100 decibels. * Bluetooth 4.2 * Built-in for speakerphone capabilities, which means that you can answer your phone directly thru the unit. * Floats in the water and has a built-in, water-tight dry-box to keep your valuables dry. * Submersible and waterproof for 30 minutes for up to 3 feet (I would rather not test this capability, so I will assume that the manufacturers claim is accurate). * Drop Proof, dirt-proof and snow-proof (I did not test this capability). * Very portable as it weighs in at 4 pounds. * You can also charge your phone directly from this unit. * Device easily paired with my IPhone 7 plus, Mac laptop and my Acer laptop. * Supports up to 8 devices I was really curious as to judging the sound capabilities and the musicality of this unit, so I performed a side by side comparison of the Aquaphonics AQ11 against two of my Bluetooth speakers which I own. I will refrain from indicating their names, but one devices name rhymes with the number "9", and the other rhymes with the word "Goes". Overall the Aquaphonics AQ11 did a pretty decent job. The speaker has full sound, clear highs and good lows. Music reproduction was handled with ease. All types of music sounded good and I was very pleasantly surprised. Although it was not the best sounding speaker as compared to one of my other Bluetooth speakers, it was a very close second. And I mean, a very very close second. If I had a choice between the 3 speakers, I would choose the Aquaphonics AQ11 because of its overall versatility. In closing I should remind you that the Aquaphonics AQ11 is a superior product for very "active" consumers, who can rely on the product to keep on working through some adverse conditions. Using the unit aboard your boat, at the beach, in your pool, in the ocean, or in the snow, etc, make this unit very versatile. You don't have to worry about dropping the unit into the water or splashing water on it. The Aquaphoncis AQ11 is a great speaker and will please you. Depend upon it.

    Its Built like a Tank!

The Aquaphonics AQ11 is a little bit of a mixed bag. At this price point and unit size I think I wanted a little better sound. I have another manufacturers speaker and it's much smaller but it sounds better. That being said, their slogan, Live Loud, does ring true. I have it out on my patio and I can clearly hear it 40 feet away. The huge difference is that the Aquaphonics is a tank. It is water proof, dirt proof, snow proof and drop proof (within limits). I wouldn't dare do that with my other speaker. Getting it running wasn't too hard. The in-box instructions are skimpy and barely enough. If you go online you get more detailed instructions. Once it's hooked up via bluetooth it works well. You can control the sound volume on the speaker or the bluetooth device along with pause, skip. It does NOT however have Fast Forward or Rewind. A really neat feature is that the controls automatically sense your hand and light up. I've never seen that before. Lifeproof did make the outer case of the speaker very "active" friendly. What I mean by that is that every corner, all 4 of them, have a nice built in handle. It allows you to pick up the speaker instantly no matter what the orientation is and without having to worry you're going to break something. One thing I did think was missing was an auto off feature. Actually, it does have an auto off but ONLY if the device it's connected to either completely turns off or loses it's bluetooth connection. It will turn off after 10 minutes in that scenario. That may not be a big deal for some but it bothered me. When it was hooked to my iPod, the iPod never (completely) turns off so it stayed connected for hours and hours. I have a few speakers and they all turn off after several minutes of the iPod not playing music so it is possible. Even though the iPod "sleeps", until you fully shut down the iPod, it's bluetooth stays connected. This really hurts if you're using it to go to sleep to. I've hooked it to my iPod, my Windows 10 computer, my Roku device. They all behave differently so just be aware. The Dry Case is cool. It's on the botton of the speaker and allows you to put your phone and thin wallet inside and remain waterproof. The enclosure was exactly the size of my Note 4 without a Case. I could fit a phone, a thin wallet and probably a couple of keys inside. Finally, it does act as a Phone Speaker allowing you to take incoming calls. Of course everyone in the vicinity will hear your conversation...probably loudly! It worked very well though. Bottom line, if you're looking for something industrial for outside activity it's a good deal. If you are looking for great sound indoors, there are better options. This is for the Active person and is meant to take abuse and still keep playing.

    Not loud enough!

This speaker isn't loud enough for me. That being said, what I do like. I like that the controls only light up when you move the speaker so it's not on constantly that will save battery life. I like the dry compartment, since you can use this speaker in and around water taking it to the beach or pool you have a spot for your phone, cards, keys etc. Now that all depends on what phone you have, an iPhone 7 with a slim case can fit with keys and cards, iPhone 7 plus without a case can fit with cards. I like that you can lock the controls. It's a decent weight to it, definitely not a light speaker that you carry around with you all the time. Very easy setup and pairing. I didn't like the sound, I don't think it gets loud enough. If you take this to the beach or want to use it by the pool for small party it doesn't give enough bass or gets loud enough that you don't have to be right near it to hear your music. This speaker does have more good than bad but the bad to me out weighs all the good, the whole reason for a portable speaker and one that's advertising waterproof is to use it for sound and since it doesn't get loud enough for you to be away from it than its not worth it. I gave it 3 stars because of the things I did like about it, but just for sound alone I gave it 1 star. Some people might think it's loud enough for them, to me if I am using this at the beach or pool it's not loud enough for that.

Pros: Long battery life Good quality sound Water Dust Sand and Drop proof Floats in case it's dropped or knocked into the water Cons: Not loud enough for its size Lock box holds one phone and one key It's not surround sound which is what i was anticipating. This was a big disappointment seeing as how it's the bigger model of the series. I don't see a difference between this one and the smaller one aside from battery life.

On unboxing the AQ11, I was impressed that it looked great and had substantial weight to it. In my experience/opinion, audio electronics that are solid and have weight to them generally are of really good quality and usually last a long time when taken care of. My test run: The battery already had approx. a 50% charge and only took about 2 hrs. to reach 100%. Battery level is shown just below the power button as 4 'Dots' and each 'Dot' represents 25% charge. The appropriate light, according to charge, will continually flash until 100% charge is reached and all 4 are lit solid. Speaker has a mechanical lock switch (lever) that when in the locked position, the controls cannot be operated. An example of this being convenient would be while you have a swimming pool full of guests and have the speaker floating in the pool in the locked position, no changes can be made to your music that is playing by everyone handling the speaker...Unless they unlock it. It has a watertight compartment (Dry Box) located on the bottom, that you can store items in OR more importantly, can hook your mobile device via 3.5mm audio jack to power up your sounds! There is also a USB where you can charge your device. It fit my cell phone in there fine. The bluetooth feature allows you to pair with up to 8 different devices. One cool feature I like is that I paired it with my wireless landline and this speaker allows you to answer the call like a speakerphone. It does so after pausing your music of course and then you hit "Play" to answer and then "Play" to hang up. When you hang up, the music automatically resumes! Very nice! No need to drag the home phone outside with you while you have the AQ11 cranking up the tunes with you! Which brings up another point..... Range of signal....Inside my home, I received great signal for about 57 feet (through 3 walls, furnishings etc..) and about 65 feet away outside in the yard. Pretty impressive without an extender. On opposite side of power button is the charge port, another 3.5mm audio jack AND a USB pug-in where you can use to charge up your devices....However, you cannot recharge the speaker using a portable charging device (but the speaker charge lasts up to 15 hours) OR you cannot charge 2 different devices using both of these "charge-out" outlets at the same time. Top controls are: Play, (use this also to play/pause your tunes or to answer calls) volume up/down, track back/forward, bluetooth and source (switch between audio sources) I am impressed with the volume that I can crank up my music to with this speaker! Much more than I expected. The Bass tones could be improved, but I definitely don't have any complaints especially since it does sound great and the versatility of being water proof, snow, dirt and shock proof make this a "Take-Anywhere" speaker for me for sure and I'd recommend it to anyone. *My post shows 4 stars, But I give it 4 1/2

I have a few other BT speakers, so I knew what to expect from this unit, and it didnt disappoint; decent bass, the mids and highs arent bad, but it wasnt quite as "boomy" as my Logitech speaker is. I haven't had it outside yet, but being waterproof makes this ideal for any outdoor activity..definitely work a look, if you are looking for a go anywhere, versatile bt speaker!

First Impressions: First thing I noticed about this product was that it was much larger than I expected. Compared to the several portable speakers I have, both wired and wireless, this is definitely the largest, it is almost like a pretty small boombox. Next thing I noticed was the material. I found it interesting that this product is shockproof for drops but there is literally no rubber in the construction, just plastic. I would think they would have put it on at least the edges for shock absorption or if anything, grip, considering this product would be put in a wide variety of locations. It feels like one or two decent drops and any of the edges would crack. The buttons all feel heavy duty and its nice that they are back-lit. On the side below the power button, there is a switch that says it is a lock. It took me way longer than I would have liked it to, to figure out what exactly that locked. I thought that would be a lock to the compartment on the bottom so that it didn't accidentally get opened, but nope. It ended up being a lock to disable the control buttons on the top. After trying to skip songs and change volume and NOTHING happening, I realized the lock controls the buttons. I looked in the directions that came with it and it was not mentioned at all. Just that it was a lock. Speaking of the directions, those could be really improved, some more information on the switching of sources would have been nice. I also noticed that the charging port and charger is a round dc plug. This was a big bummer because its one more charger I have to keep track of it and have sitting around, so many products are micro usb chargeable now, I was expecting that, or even the wider usb 3.0 if it needs more power. Sound: I was slightly disappointed in the sound this speaker produced. Its not bad, but its not good. For its large size, I was looking forward to hearing some good bass come out of it but it strongly lacks bass performance, and overall a good sound at that. I understand this speaker is not going to sound like a boss speaker, considering it can go underwater, but I was expecting more, especially in this price range. I did notice when I was further away from it AND in the open outside, it sounded better than up close. Water Test: Even though it killed me to put something electronic into water, I still wanted to put it to the test, so I slowly put it into my pool at first, it slowly got its balance and angled itself in the water so that it was angled up with the speaker facing upwards. As soon as the speaker compartment panel got wet by me moving it around a little, that was it, the sound got muffled it and took a lot of shaking it out to get it to sound, well, not underwater sounding. It easily floated around the pool all on its own though, not looking like it was struggling to stay afloat, that was with no one in the pool rough housing. When I took it out after about 20 minutes, I dried it all off and let it air dry for awhile, and then opened all the compartments to see if they were wet. The bottom compartment that is supposed to house your phone, was completely dry. That compartment has a nice seal and latch to it. However the side compartment that has a cheap cover, not rubber but a soft plastic material and no latch, did not seal well at all(I made sure before I put it in water that it was pushed in as far as it could go) The whole compartment was wet and even the charging port was clogged with water. I don't get why that panel could not get a nice cover like the bottom has. Overall: This product is not horrible by any means. It has a lot of potential but needs improvements. I like the heavy duty light up buttons. I like the fact that your phone can be safely stored in the bottom compartment, and even charge it down there. I like that there is an aux-in option. However the sound needs improvement, the overall construction needs to feel more rugged, and that infamous side panel cover needs to be an actual door with a latch and seal for it to be waterproof. Someone who buys this product would most likely not be buying it for its sound quality, but its versatility to be in and near water and always ready for some use and abuse. I cannot recommend this product to a friend until it is completely waterproof.

      Hi Katie,

Thanks for your feedback! We apologize for the confusion during your initial experience with this product. Yes, the AQ11 does float to prevent it from sinking to the bottom of a pool, river, lake or ocean in the event that it is accidentally dropped in any of those areas. It was not designed to be used while floating as the water will end up muffling the sound. Enjoying tunes while the speaker is on the side of the pool is the way to go!

If water happens to get past the dust cap on the side there is nothing to worry about as those ports are waterproof. Below is a link that will show you a video that goes over all of the functions of the AQ11.

So I was super skeptical about this speaker floating/being water proof and was extremely hesitant to put it in a pool but turns out thing works like a charm. It floats, charges your phone if need be and has excellent sound. Perfect for backyard get togethers and lazy days at the pool. A neat party trick to say the least and a quality speaker to boot.

This aquaphonics is the larger of the portable speakers from Lifeproof. It can get loud (100dB) and I blasted it in my backyard, and it was clear and powerful. It is waterproof, and has a storage with a built in charger for your phone, wallet, keys, etc. Perfect for any rugged expedition. It does say dustproof, but I'd be comfortable also taking it to the beach, as it can charge your device while ir plays its music. It is rated ay 15hrs which is plenty of juice for a trip. The bass on it is nothing special, but for the other features you get, you won't necessarily miss it. As rugged as it is, I wish it had a light on it and a radio tuner as well, but maybe the next one will.

First off I'm not super impressed with the sound but that's because it's designed to withstand the elements, so I will not take away a star for that. That being said this speaker is a tank and I love it. I ran it through the ringer as I went white water rafting and it arrived just in time. I intentionally dropped it too many times, submerged it, let it float behind us a bit tied to a rope, tossed it around in the sand, meanwhile my iPod touch was in the water tight sealed compartment on board. This is an amazingly tough speaker for the outdoorsman. I think I sold everyone around yesterday. Used it for about 7 hours and still had some juice left. If you want a Bluetooth speaker that can handle all the abuse this is your speaker. If you want a super high end speaker with crisp highs and super lows then go with something else. This puppy is loud and decent but not super crisp. I'm a nutty audiophile though, only a couple people said anything about the sound quality, everyone loved it.

I knew when I got my AQ11 that it was going to be a great device. Immediately when opening the package I could tell this was a cool design and not just because of the Lifeproof-usual material and ruggedness, but also for the fact that this thing is a cool design - Handle/Grips on four corners, and its the perfect "boom box" size. This thing has a GREAT compartment for USB or Stereo AUX cable and phone storage that's WATERPROOF... This thing will ROCK at the beach or the pool - And keep your phone or iPod safe... The speaker also features audio controls that use AVRCP over Bluetooth and work when hard wired. All of the controls are rubber-coated and sealed. The ports on the device for charging or AUX-IN that aren't part of the sealed phone compartment have their own sealed door that keeps water out. This speaker even tolerated my "throw around the backyard" test of rugged devices and didn't even scratch! It hit the concrete and dug into the dirt and wiped clean!

Overall the speaker will probably serve its purpose outdoor, which is where I intended to use it. Think long days out in the garden. The unit lacks any oomph though to hit low notes of any kind on any genre of music. That's disappointed. I don't expect the much to sound like it's driven by a sub, but some thump would be nice. The dry box is able to accommodate my iPhone 6+ with Apple leather case. Just don't think you're going to fit a charge cable in there to charge while stored. It does look deep enough though that it could store two iPhones stacked on top of each other. Or a phone and a small, organized set of keys. The exterior usb port while charge your phone while playing music. I haven't had luck with the interior port though. I'm my case though, based off size of phone, not like I'd be able to do that even if I wanted to. Connecting to the phone was easy and it stays connected with ease. I haven't tested the extent of its range yet so I can't comment to that. Overall it's an okay speaker. Just don't expect to hear/enjoy the full range of your music, unless your listening to harps, violins and opera I suppose.
