I had to connect it to my cable modem/wifi-router with a long ethernet cable in order to set it up in another part of my house. But that is better than the ones that claim to connect to the wifi source wirelessly.

The range extender should boost the wireless connection of your router. Proper placement of the unit is one of the workarounds that would help improve its coverage. It is recommended to plug in the range extender midway between your router and the area without Wi-Fi. Also, be sure you have at least 50% of your router’s Wi-Fi signal at that point on the device you used for setup.

works sometimes

The only thing is that it is hard to know if it is getting the signal from my router. Sometimes it loses the signal from my router and I can't tell. It only has a light on when it has power. It would be nice if it had some kind of light to tell me that it is getting the wi-fi signal from my router. I would probably recommend to just buy a better router with a longer range.
