Good wifi coverage, 8-year old buggy OS

I purchased this router 3 months ago. I've been working with Linksys customer support since that time to try to get them to fix a firmware bug with the USB ports (4TB USB drives are not supported). There has been no progress in that time. Last night I was advised by Linksys that I should return this router and buy a different model, since that bug still exists and new issues have come to light. Linksys customer support doesn't even think this is a good router :( The wifi coverage of this router is awesome, it covers my whole house. The speed is nowhere near the advertised 866Mbps, but I get at least 300Mbps everywhere. With my 120Mbps internet connection, that is just fine with me. The problems I have with this router are all due to the firmware. Keep in mind that this router updates itself...but, Linksys has failed to release a new firmware version since 1/30/2018. This router runs an 8-year old version of Linux (2.6.36, released in 2010) which includes NONE of the major security fixes released in the past 2 years, and NONE of the fixes since 2010. This ancient OS also includes a known bug that prevents the usage of some 4TB USB drives (mine included). And the killer for me...a memory leak that requires the router to be rebooted at least once a week so that it continues to function. I've been advised by Linksys customer support to return this router and buy an EA9300 or EA9500. I've purchased an extended warranty from Best Buy, so I will do this after I've saved up the difference.

If you like constantly having your internet drop and having random devices show that you are connected to the network but not actually have internet then this router is perfect. I am on my second replacement of this router and each time, the router performed the same...terribly. The router constantly drops internet, sometimes as often as ten times a day, which requires either a power cycyle or a hard reset. Only to repeat the issue a few hours later. I often receive messages while streaming movies that my network is underperforming and the program will freeze for a period of time. Lastly, random devices (i.e. brand new I Pads/Phones) will randomly not connect to the network, despite showing as connected. I will have to toggle between the 2.4 and 5 ghz network to be able to use the internet. I found myself use my data plan instead of my network, which is not what I should be doing in my own home. I guess there is a reason this product is always on sale....it doesn't actually work. Fortunately, the mfg (after several calls, and hours on the phone, conducting trouble shooting) is going to work with me and provide me with a different model. Hopefully that fixes the problems so I can go back to a normal life and not constantly resetting the router.

    Keep losing signal

I did not plan on buying this router but asked the Best Buy tech what he would recommend and he suggested this router. My main problem with the old router was range. My cable comes in through the basement and I had an extender but would lose the signal. Just want something where I would not lose the signal. I am not a tech person and just wanted a plug and play with no problems. My first problem was that it did not set up. I called tech support and after an hour they had the router working. About 2 weeks later, the wifi stopped working on my computer. I also problems with the connection on my TV. I called tech support and spent another hour on the phone and they were able to get it working by switching it to another channel or frequency. It worked for about 2 weeks. Then my computer kept dropping the signal about 4 times a day. Very frustrating. My 2 teenagers also told me that their wifi kept getting dropped and that the new router "sucked." I called tech support for the third time yesterday. Spent close to another hour on the phone and they did an update. It has been working today. I have spent 3 hours with tech support. I have had my signal drop on my computer close to 30 times. When it works, I get a good signal throughout the house. However, it has been frustrating. I did not expect the hassles with a new product that I just spent $200. I am hoping that I am done with tech support but only time will tell. I probably should have returned the product but I am now outside the return period for Best Buy.

    Shady product/terrible tech support

    Posted
    Sierra

Bought this router at Best Buy and it worked fine for a little over a year, but one month after the tech support/warranty expired it completely shut down. The wireless network disappeared, power cycling had no effect, it would not connect to my computer via hardline so I could not check or update the firmware, and freaking reset button didn't even work. I tried to call linksys tech support, but they seemed more like a sales team. They refused to even talk with me about potential issues unless I purchased additional tech support, which I was dubious to do since the product mysteriously shut down just a month after my original tech support expired, and the supervisors were always conveniently in a meeting and unavailable. After doing more extensive research online I found that this is representative of linksys' mo, they seem to view extended tech support as an additional revenue stream and it has been suggested that they engineer their products to require this additional support. I highly recommend going with a different company that stands behind the quality of their products.

    Slow Internet Speed

This router significantly slowed my internet speed. My wired speed is 115 mbps. The max speed with this router was only 32-34 mbps. I am usually a loyal Linksys customer, but I am now looking at other brands. Three weeks ago, I purchased the Linksys Velop Mesh System. Within the first hour of use, we reset it three times. After hours of troubleshooting and approximately 1 1/2 - 2 hours on the phone with Linksys, it was determined that one of the nodes was defective. After removing the defective node, it was more reliable, however, the speed was still slow. The mesh system crashed every time I tried to fax. The printer had to be hard wired in order to send a fax. I returned it and purchased the Linksys Max-Stream AC1900. It didn't crash, but I could never get our internet speed above 34 mbps. We experienced constant buffering with all of our devices. I returned the second Linksys to Best Buy and received a warning regarding the multiple returns in the past 30 days.

I have had Linksys routers for years with no issues and was excited to upgrade my 4 year old router that could not keep up with the new 4K setup and multiple devices. I choose this model and for the most part the setup is smooth and all of my devices connected, except my Ring video Doorbell. I spent almost 2 hours with tech support, setting up a DMZ, opening ports etc. and nothing worked. I said that’s fine, as long as it rings like a regular doorbell I can live without the video and the network is good to go. Then I went to launch Battlefield 1 multiplayer. Was not able to connect to any servers?!! To troubleshoot, I hooked up my 4 year old router and I was online within minutes and the Ring Video Doorbell was linked back up again to the network. As such, I am convinced there is an issue with this model - MAX STREAM AC1900 and I do not recommend this product especially if you game online or have a Ring Doorbell.

    Poor Tech Support

After attempting to setup the router, for forty five minutes, I contacted tech support that want to share my screen for setup and charge me an additional fee. After spend time (90+ minutes) on the phone with some that could hardly talk English the setup was complete. The normal setup web-page from the instruction manual gave a error that there system was down or being uploaded and try again. When tech support came on the phone the directed me to a different address. At one point I was asked to get a paperclip (not shown in instruction manual as equipment needed) to reset the unit. Just getting started with the tech trying to get simple the serial and model number to him was painful. POOR TECH SUPPORT and even asking to spend more money.

Websites freeze and quite working intermitently

    Posted
    WirelessTech

I recently purchased this router as an upgrade to my existing older ASUS RT-N66U. Shortly after installing the unit my family and I noticed that web pages were suddenly freezing up and we had to drop the wireless connection and re-enable it again to continue on. The problem was more than annoying for all of us using different wireless devices on both the 2.4G and 5G bands. After many hours of phone calls and troubleshooting with tech support I finally demanded an RMA and received one today. Tech support was always available but continually asked me to reboot the router and reinstall the firmware. They just would not allow me to simply get an RMA. I will be sending this product back for replacement in hopes this situation was a fluke. I am back on my old wireless ASUS router and everything is working fine.

    Horrible Performance

This router worked for only a brief period of time before I began encountering issues. The reviews gave a false impression of how the router will perform, I would give it 0 stars if I could. This router has issues establishing connections with devices that’s I have previously connected to the network. I have done full resets on all devices, and this has done nothing to help fix the issue. I contacted customer support, and they were just as unhelpful, I spent an extended period of time on the phone until they eventually said “it is the other devices having the issue”. I have already tested the devices on a different router and they worked just fine, so it is not an issue related to the connecting devices. I wish I had seen these issues earlier so that I could return this device.

Software leaves a lot to be desired

The installation attempts to be consumer friendly but just results in real setup options being either extremely difficult to find or not available at all. The DHCP server works for a short while then stops handing out new IP addresses. There is no useful log entry that would show a problem in this area and the support desk answer is to assign all my devices a reserved address! This is hardly an answer for visiting family members and their smart phones for instance. Rebooting the router starts the DHCP again but only for a few hours. I upgraded to the latest firmware but still no difference. Returned the router and bought a Netgear replacement which works fine.

    Unreliable Internet

Easy to setup out of the box but don't plan to have reliable Internet. The signal strength is great but it drops Internet connection. It would drop connection several times an hour. A coworker pointed me to LinkSys Support to alter the MTU. That helped but still had slow connection on devices and it would still drop. I had to recalculate the settings multiple times. Here is the link if anyone needs it. https://www.linksys.com/us/support-article?articleNum=137972 And here is how you determine your MTU https://www.linksys.com/us/support-article?articleNum=140973 This seems more work for my liking for a brand new router and I returned it. BB allowed me to get a simular ASUS router and I had no trouble with it.

Worst router I have ever bought. Drops connection dozens of times a day, reboots do nothing, firmware updates did nothing, tech support just shifts the blame back to "user error". Its obvious by the reviews both here and elsewhere that this router has issues but Linksys support will not acknowledge that fact. Linksys "tech support" just keeps telling me its my fault, and that it couldn't possibly be there gem of a router. Even after I revealed my 25+ year background in network engineering. Now they want me to pay to return this brick so they can send me the same brick back. Not happening... this was the last Linksys purchase I will ever make.

Every day without fail we lose internet. WiFi and wired devices all lose connection to the internet. Most days it happens multiple times per day. Nothing is more frustrating than having the wife calling me angry asking if I can restart the router. Luckily the app works well and I can reset it from anywhere. Speeds are great when it works. Signal is strong too. If only it would stay connected. Very disappointed in this product after years of using other Linksys products that have been great.

      Hi Paulee,

It is possible that an outdated firmware is causing this behavior. We suggest that you make sure to update the firmware if available. Also, make sure that your internet connection from your provider is stable since the router is dependent from its source.

The wired side of the router appears to be reliable and fast, however the wireless side of the router only worked for about 2 weeks before we started noticing problems. We lost wireless connectivity intermittently at first. Now we are barely able to get a wireless connection to any device. We tried firmware and software updates but saw no improvement. Our last wireless router lasted years with no issues until it completely died. This was a very disappointing purchase which are returning after a little more than 2 months of use.

This router gave out on me after a month and a half. Performance had been slowly drifting until finally, devices would say that they were connected, but couldn't load the internet. After doing quite a bit of research, I factory reset the router only to find that the 2.4ghz network was gone! Figures, Linksys got bought out by Belkin...
