Linksys AC1900 - very good range

Linksys AC1900 MU-MIMO Gigabit Router Overview: This dual band Linksys router is capable of sending out AC signals as well as older N and G signals. If you don’t have newer devices that support AC band, than there’s not much point to upgrade to this router. iPhone 6, iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 4 are the first iDevices to have AC chipset. In this review, I’ll be comparing the Linksys AC1900 router to the Asus RT-AC66R router that I’ve been using for approximately 9 months. My needs of a router might be more demanding than the average user. I keep my router in the basement with the rest of my equipment and it is also where my cable service comes into the house, so the router needs to have good signal throughout the house (2 floors, about 3000sq feet). I also connect the router to a 24 port switch that has various devices connected to it, from TV, VOIP phone, CCTV to a NAS. I also use my phone to access my NAS, so the performance of the router is critical. On a side note, I noticed when I switched from the FIOS router to the Asus a year ago, the performance when accessing files remotely was noticeable. Wireless devices I have connected are the usual, iPads, phone, printer, thermostat and desktop. First impressions: The router came packaged nice and simple, it included the router, 3 antennas, power supply and a network cable. It measures 10x7, about 1.75” thick. The back has the usual ports, 2 USB, 4 gigabit wired ports, WPS setup button etc. Underneath are 2 screw holes that you can use to hang the router up on the wall. It also came with a handy paper with the wifi SSID and password, no need to take out a magnifying glass and find the sticker on the router itself. Setup: The router was simple to setup, plug in power cable, Ethernet cable and that's pretty much it. Before you use it, you have to go through the Linksys setup page. The interface was fairly easy to use, I haven’t use a Linksys router in quite a while (owned by Belkin as of March 2013). The setup screen has gotten much more user friendly over the years. Within 10 minutes, I was up and running. There's also an iPad or iPhone app that makes setting up the router very easy and convenient. One very cool feature this has that I wish the Asus has is remote access to the router. With the app or through the linksyssmartwifi.com, you can remotely manage your router, how cool is that! With this, I could log in remotely and setup filters on my kids iPad to block them from watching MindCraft videos! :) Anyway, back to the router... The WPS "wifi protected setup" is nice, I've never used this feature in the past. Since my router is in the basement, I'd rather type in the password than go down and press the button. The Linksys setup screen has a soft button you can press. This made adding devices such as a HP printer so easy! I did find this feature in the Asus setup webpage as well, but it wasn't very obvious so I never noticed it was there. Performance: The range on this router is excellent! I setup both the 2.4ghz and 5.0ghz networks (2.4 has better range while 5.0ghz faster speeds and should be less interference). I was able to reach both networks from the corners of my house where I typically lose coverage with the Asus router, I was very impressed. The speeds seem comparable to the Asus, I didn't notice much of a difference difference on that end. I tested the router out for about a week and a half. I streamed videos from YouTube and Netflix without any issues. There were no issues, just better range and no lagging with videos (I used to get lagging videos with the FiOS router all the time). After a week, I started getting complaints from the natives. My son had asked me for the wifi password, which I had already setup on his iPad. I thought it was a fluke, but it occurred again on a different iPad and on my Honeywell connected thermostat. Than my wife started complaining about phone not streaming properly, it kept dropping the signal several times. I upgraded the firmware and tried again, the same issues persisted. I ended up switching back to my old router. Unfortunately this router sees to have issues. I would not recommend the Linksys router at this time until these issues are resolved.

First the good: I had this out of the box and set up in about 5 minutes while holding an in depth phone conversation. It was that easy to set up. Simply connected to my router using my iPad and performed the simple set up. Customization came later. Love the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi app. It allows you to view any device connected to your network. It lacks the ability to turn on access control or to block any unknown connections. Because I have only had the router a few days I cannot say this is impossible from the router URL. For me, this is an important security miss. Again, a standard in my previous two routers. There are several applications listed as apps for the Linksys router but only one appears to be applicable to this iteration of their router and this is a paid enhancement to restrict website access. This functionality is built into my security software so it is a no for me. For the basics such as rebooting the router, the app is passable. The bad. The guest networks are not customizable and simply clone the name of the parent network. They also use one shared password.. The guest network has simply 'Disappeared' several times needing a router reboot to get it to show up again. The 5 GHZ mode only seems to be good for a/Ac connection types. My Windiws computer cannot even see the 5 GHZ even when set on mixed where it connects to either band on the older router. I thought I would see an improvement in my Apple products with MIMO built for ac connectivity but the performance is basically the same as on my 6 year old 802.11 a/b/g/n. My biggest hope for this device was the range. Again, this was a disappointment compared to the old router. One room over with an open door is fine, two rooms and signal is iffy. This router has an equivalent range of the Bluetooth on my smartphone to put it into perspective

I experienced serious problems with this router's ability to maintain WiFi/internet signals amongst the many other signals in my building. My current router (Verizon FiOS) has no problem with this, but I had hoped that with this being a dual-band router (2.4 GHz & 5 GHz), I could swap some of my devices to the 5 GHz to improve speed while keeping some of my smaller devices on the 2.4 GHz. I did this and experienced problems across the board. The WiFi and/or internet signal would cut out intermittently causing my phone to temporarily lose functionality until I turned WiFi off so that I could use cellular data. Obviously, this is not ideal. I can say that setup with this router is a breeze which is usually not the case. What is even better is the admin app that you can download and use to change all of the administrative functions without having to be directly connected to the network. This is great if you need to adjust something while away. My review is mixed and would've been much better had I not experienced signal loss problems. I'm not certain what caused it as my old router performed just fine when I swapped them out. From what I've read, most of our current devices that use WiFi aren't equipped with the necessary hardware to make use of the new AC MU-MIMO technology. As our devices catch up to the technology of the router, it should become a much more valuable tool.

Great hardware, poor firmware and support

This router was great when I first took it out of the box, with a few exceptions. The wireless signal was very powerful and was strong throughout my entire house. Speed and internet connectivity was great at first, except the fact it would drop the connection to my devices every once in a while. After owning this for maybe a year at most the router has gone downhill and now it’s to the point my phone will connect to the internet about 50% of the time, while mainting a very strong signal to the router. I have to turn off my WiFi and turn it back on to get it to work. I contacted Linksys about this and they were absolutely no help and try to sell me support for my $150+. I’m also very tech savvy and have tried every possible fix I’ve thought of and have read on the internet in regard to this and simply cannot fix their firmware bug. Live and learn. Last linksys product I buy.

    Difficult to Set-up

I have set up five previous wireless routers, including 3 Linksys. The router was almost impossible to set-up. My son, an IT specialist, and I struggled for three hours to get this going. The no-brainer auto set-up never worked. We finally did it manually on the 8th or 9th try. Tech support never worked because we did not have on-line access, and the 800 call number was worthless. The main problem is the set-up software requires that you establish a username/password and then blocks the internet access until you validate an email online. Well, duh, you can't verify if the access is blocked. And cell phone verification is not accepted. Ugly ... The router operation ( after set-up) is a little weird. You can use the 2.4 Ghz low bandwidth great reception option where videos don't always work. Or you can use the 5 Ghz high bandwidth barely-tolerable reception where videos don't always work. It is a catch 22. Note: the 5 Ghz works great if you are sitting next the router. Sorry folks, I am not a fan of this router.

    Unnecessarily Difficult setup...

    Posted
    Bill

The only drawback of this router, and it's a significant one, is that it forces an internet connection to even begin to configure it. In the event it is to be used as an access point for an existing network, it must first be configured as a primary router w/ internet access, thus disrupting the existing network in the process. In the event the router is to be configured at one location prior to installing it at another location (for example, you're assisting a family member and want to configure it ahead of time) it won't be possible unless it is connected to an internet source. The above two scenarios were exactly what I experienced with the two examples of this router which I have purchased so far. It's a significant inconvenience, and totally unnecessary. I can only assume this requirement for live internet for configuration is prevalent across the entire line of Linksys/Belkin routers. I'll be looking for more flexible options at my next router purchase.

Have had this router for about 2.5 years. There were no issues for quite some time. However, after about a year, my TV and AppleTV would loose connection and buffer a lot. Solved that issue with Cat 5 cables. Now the router will just randomly loose connection about once a week. Have to use the app on my phone to restart the router. Once that process completes, there are no issues for about another week. It is frustrating but not a huge issue. We are a household of 2 with average usage (computer, 2 phones, tablet, TV and AppleTV).

The setup was reasonable but I had to use wifi to do it, not just ethernet/wired connection. OK. I tried every combination of disk drives, cables and the two USB ports. I know about Windows not supporting SMBv1, but this NEVER recognized any disk in any port. Disgusted. Returned for a Netgear, which worked immediately. The networking worked fine and had good range, so some might not notice this deficiency for a while.

When I first set this up, the wireless connections and range were great. However, when I used Ethernet to connect to the ports my speeds dropped from 70 mbps to a range of 1-5 mbps on several different devices and a variety of cables. Talked to Tech Support several times and tried another unit and could not fix the problem. I ended up taking it back and getting the Netgear which worked flawlessly.

I bought this new router because I had spilled some water on my old one and needed to replace it. I decided to go for this one because of its promise for "whole house" coverage. Well, I live in a 2 bedroom apartment and it is without a doubt worse than the $40 router I had in here previously. It does have a guest network which is neat, but overall it is NOT worth the money.

Software and hardware is great; however, when you need to update the unit it will limit the ethernet speeds to 30 megs (Usually average 110). I was told by a Linksys representative, in order to fix the issue I have to reset it? Turns out the router needed to be reset every 2 weeks. Returned it for an Apple Airport unit which has been working much better since.

      Hi, jpsulisz,

A firmware update should not be limiting ethernet speed, and a factory reset should not be causing intermittent connectivity. Hi Ispep,

You can tweak the wireless channel of the router. This will resolve issues of wireless interference to improve the performance and reliability of your network. The preferred wireless channels to use for the 2.4 GHz network are 1, 6, and 11 since they’re considered non-overlapping channels.
