I got Linksys Velop system with 3 nodes. The nodes design is beautiful, a modern and simple look that goes with any interior. Setup is done with the Linksys app via a smartphone or tablet. Once you install the app, setup is a breeze. I just followed the instructions and the app did all the work. The only typing i did was input my wifi name and password I wanted to use. The app's dashboard is also easy to understand and navigate around. The dashboard give you total control, very informative, easy to read/understand, lets you do speed testing and so much more. Why aren't all device setups this easy? I really like this wifi system. I've used many moving place to place, so far this is the best. I highly recommend this product!!

The system is very easy to set-up. The Nodes produce a consistent signal and great range -- I can place a node 300 feet away in my cabin and get *full service*. This was key. I really like the iPhone app to manage my devices and nodes. There is also a web application as well. The units I have are black and look very discrete in my home. I am very pleased.

    Future of home wifi systems...

I called this a WIFI system because with the way it works you are getting a whole home complete WIFI solution. It is not perfect but pretty close. The router gets 5 stars because it does what it does really really well. The coverage and speed are the best of all modern routers. The only issues are that when you set it up you will want to do each piece one at a time. Leave the other nodes unplugged until you are done with the previous node. The documentation does not explain that. Also it needs you to connect the main mode to the router directly to allow it to configure and sync with each additional node. I can vouch for the tech support for these is the best in the industry as well. I was shocked there was no USB functionality and each node has two network jacks. You will need one on the main node to allow the system to interface with your cable modem but then that leaves the other port and any ports on additional nodes to connect systems. I was not a huge fan of needing an Android or IOS device to configure and setup the router. The feature set in the mobile app works but is a little slow at times and does not seem as robust as web based management pages. Once you get it configured though this is rock solid and just works. At the end of the day that is what we buy routers for and this router delivers. This is the Linksys inspired modular WIFI system that will probably change the future of these devices. I would recommend a color chart on the Linksys website to explain the colors on each node during setup. Again not a major issue. I think the light on each node is just enough you can see it but it was not overly bright at all. So in the end if you want or need a modular system and you don't require a USB port on the nodes themselves then there is no other choice. Very happy across the board.

I've used the Velop for about a week now and so far, I think I'm going to stick with my Orbi setup. My home is approximately 3300 square feet, not including my finished basement area. We have upwards of 4 laptops, 4 tablets, 3 Apple TV's, 1 Smart TV and a smart home starter set including Ecobee thermostat, Garage Door Opener, Wireless Security Cameras and WeMo outlets. I say that because I think its important to know what all is connected to the system to accurately depict how well it works. First, I will talk about what I like about the Velop. It's a relatively small footprint compared to other wireless systems available, definitely has the ability to provide coverage on all three floors of my home and although not the fastest setup, it was pretty simple. I liked how I was able to rename each location right from my iPhone and setup a name and password for the guest network. I also like that even though it broadcasts on 2.4 and 5.0ghz frequencies, I don't have to name each one separately. What I don't like about the Velop is that it only has two Ethernet ports on each tube (which probably accounts for how small it is), no USB input, the app is not nearly as useful as the Netgear app for the Orbi, several features including the Speed Test and Device Prioritization never worked for me. I also noticed that even though I am connected to the Velop, it always shows several devices as being offline (See attached photos). Just for reference, I have 50mb internet speeds which is the fastest available in my area. When I ran the speed test on my phone using the app outside of Linksys, I was able to test my speeds. I did get an app update a few days ago and I still had the same problems. All in all, I wouldn't recommend this unit. I will be sticking with my two unit Orbi setup. The app works much better, each Orb has four Ethernet ports and is easy to setup. It does take up more real estate, but I haven't had any problems with it.

    Whole Home Wifi Solution

I was very excited to try this product. My home is a commercial space that was converted into a house. The thicker walls and floors make effective wifi coverage problematic. To get complete coverage I had previously resorted to using a separate network for each floor. For each network I used a wifi router and a wifi extender to blanket each floor with wifi. This solution seemed adequate but it necessitated switching networks depending on where you were in the house. Obviously a pain. Then along came Velop the Linksys mesh wifi solution which is designed to provide whole house wifi coverage through the use of wifi nodes. I must admit I was extremely skeptical. I had top notch network equipment in place and doubted Velop would outperform it. Upon opening the Velop box I was immediately impressed with the packaging. You know there's something nice inside. One concern is that each node is in a protective sleeve. Nice touch but when you pick up the node it can easily slip out of the sleeve risking damage if it falls. Be careful. The nodes aren't particularly large or heavy. The design is generally pleasing and would reside inconspicuously on a shelf. Enclosed in the box are 3 Velop nodes, 3 power adaptors, 1 ethernet cable, and very basic instructions. The written setup instructions amount to directing you to download the Linksys app which then provides a detailed step by step setup. Please note if you are using the Linksys app with other Linksys routers, disconnect your old products from your network first otherwise the app wont initiate a Velop setup. At least it wouldn't for me. Also make sure you have Bluetooth turned on since the app setup relies on it initially. The setup of the first node progressed nicely but I then encountered issues when it got to the personalize your network step. It hung here requiring repeated attempts. Frustrating. I couldn't get beyond this step within the app. Setup seemed to fail but then the node appeared within the app after relaunching it several times. Setup of each additional node was also accomplished easily through the app once I figured out where the add node setting was. The app conveniently tests for proper speed and placement as you add each node and lets you know if your selected location is ideal. I connected all my wireless devices to Velop and then began testing connectivity speeds while in proximity to each node. My skepticism quickly transformed into belief. I quickly recognized a previously unrealized level of connectivity. Speeds at the most distant wireless node were identical to speeds at the wired first node! With multiple devices connected I then went about using them as usual for gaming, streaming movies, music, and your average surfing. Network speeds and bandwidth were strong throughout the house with no buffering. Linksys truly delivered on the promised full speed seamless roaming. I have on the other hand been unable to figure out how to use Velop with Alexa. While disappointed by the few setup frustrations the exceptional performance is well worth the effort. This is great tech. Highly recommended product.

I will continue to be a huge fan of Linksys products. This product is good for homes that are are multi-level and lose wifi band with traditional modems. Love the easy set up and how each tower can be used with an Ethernet cord or wifi. Each tower comes with its own individual cord and it's own reset button so no need to go downstairs to reset the main modem. My favorite part about Linksys products is the app. Turn on parental controls, guest settings for arriving family members that can use wifi but have their own pass codes and stay up to date with who is using the wifi and when. Thank you for another great product!

    A very powerful mesh network

We are an internet-driven home. We have a lot of ‘smart’ objects that use WiFi not to mention our phones, computers, and tablets. So, having a strong internet signal throughout the house is important to us. Earlier this year, we tested out the Eero system and while it was an easy set-up, it ultimately ended up being subpar for our needs. We never quite got the speed from it that we should have. So, when Linksys announced the Velop system, I was more than thrilled to get it installed. Linksys has really redefined router/network set-up and installation. They make it very easy through their mobile app — which really ends up doing most of the work for you. The first step with the Velop system is to download the Linksys app. After that, you set-up one of the nodes near your modem. As I mentioned, the app does most of the work for you — you simply plug the node into the modem and then into power. Once the LED indicator light is illuminated, you can search for it through the app. At this point, the app takes over and connects the node to the internet. Using this method, you are setting up a new WiFi network in your home. Once you have the first Velop node set-up you can place the others (if needed) throughout your home. The Linksys website suggests that you may only need one node for a 1000 square foot home. Our home is only 1500 square feet, but I still opted to set up the three-node system. This may be overkill for some homes, but given the bandwidth needed to operate all the smart items, I wanted to be sure I had a strong signal throughout the home. There is one node in my office (front of the house where the modem is), one in the kitchen (also the front of the house and covers the garage), and then one in the living room (the back of the house). All in all, the set-up only took me about 15 minutes (including the time to unbox the system) and the network was running at full speed. I ran a speed test on the Velop network using the Linksys app and it sends back a reading of 236 Mbps down/23 Mbps up. This is the higher end of what we usually see from our internet provider. The second test I ran was using speedtest net. I ran it on our 5Ghz network on our Linksys WRT 3200 ACM Router. The results were 77 Mbps down/14 Mbps up. Both tests were run from the room where the routers were set-up — so distance was not a factor with the speed results. Even though the speed test results are impressive, I think the best test I ran was connecting to our WiFi network outdoors. Earlier this summer, I was working outside from our patio. Even though I was only about 50-75 feet away from front of our home where the modem resides, I had trouble connecting. I ended up tethering to my mobile phone for a solid connection. Since I set up the Velop, I have had a solid connection outside on our patio, in our garage, and even outside into our backyard. I believe the Velop is probably the most powerful mesh system available right now. It’s easy to set-up, easy to use, and it provides a solid network connection throughout your home or office.

It's only been about a month, but so far we couldn't be happier with this product. I've tried multiple signal extenders in the past and none of them have really worked. With the Velop we not only have no dead spots anywhere in our house, but no dead spots anywhere outside on our 1 acre lot. It was also super easy to install. I highly recommend this product and it's well worth the admittedly steep price tag.

As a professional geek, the Velop should be something I salivate over. Mesh networking. This is the network we all strive for. No dead spots. Happy fast internet. Just 3 steps to set up such a wonderful setup...unless you have another Linsys router. Let me start with my like and dislikes. Like: + Wi-Fi signal is strong throughout my 3,000 square foot house. + Nice design, does not look like network equipment. More like a speaker or automatic air freshener. + Solid build quality and no antenna to break. + Automatically updates in quiet times. Dislike: - Configuration requires installing the Linksys App on your phone, either iOS or Android. - There is no web interface, no access from PC. - If you have an existing network, especially Linksys routers, the setup goes from easy to "Do I really want to call tech support?" (Being a geek, I figured out a way around it without a call.) - I fear there could be hacking over Bluetooth. - No true advanced administration. - Set Up New Product menu option not visible before configuring Velop, this will bite current Linksys users. - Future trouble shooting will require me to work from my phone, not a nice large screen PC. Explanations and Tips: First a tip. If you have a Linksys router or any other Wi-Fi networking in place, outside of your modem, power it down if you can. This will allow the app to find the nodes easier. Inside the app there is a menu option to "+ Set Up A New Product" that did not show up with my old config until after I had the Velop configured. See picture. If you can not bring down the Wi-Fi, which I could not, the Wi-Fi password is written inside the Velop nodes, each is different network until the magic happens. You should only power the first one up to get started. DO NOT attach the Ethernet cord to your modem until the installer tells you to. Once the node is powered up and you connect your phone to the Wi-Fi network, open the app. It will discover the first node and walk you thru the process. The process includes naming your network and setting up a passphrase. Typing a secure phrase on a cell phone can lead to mistyping, thanks auto correct. After the first node is set up, the secondary nodes are easy setups and just connect to the primary node ( node connected via Ethernet to your modem). This creates a really strong network signal throughout the house. The setup lets you know if the node is receiving a good signal or if it needs to move closed to the other nodes. Now here are the pitfalls of the process. Each node should configure in less than 5 minutes, even the primary node. A really quick process, when it works. Be prepared to use the red button inside the primary node to start the process over, I was able to push the button by the end of my setup without even turning the unit over to look. If the primary node configuration is "spinning" for more than 10 minutes. Start over. Close the app, unplug the node or press the red button. What should have been a 15 minute process to set up 3 nodes, took almost two hours and creating a few new words. The install, was nowhere near as simple as the quick install instructions portray. However, once configured, the network is phenomenal. There is not a dead spot in my house. Previously I had two range extenders to fill in some of the weak areas of the house, but still had areas that were less than ideal to connect to from my laptop. After getting through the pain of the install, this is a really wonderful network setup. I would definitely recommend it to my more technical friends. However they may not like it since they will lose control of some of their must have network abilities. Anyone who is technologically challenged may run into issues they are unsure of how to work thru without tech support. I don't need to handle any more calls than I get from work. So most of my family will not get this recommended to them by me. While the strong network makes this a must have to me, and something I want to rate much higher than average. I just can't, in good conscience, rate this high because of the failures of the initial configuration and the fact I can not manage it from a PC. Managing a network from a cellular device is not something everyone will like. Additionally, the fear that someone could potentially connect to a node via Bluetooth may open the network up to localized hacking. This probably would not be too good if you are in an apartment building where half the building may be in Bluetooth range. In a house, as long as a unmarked white van is not sitting outside, it is probably safe depending on your neighbors. I think Linksys has put together a great addition to the Mesh Networking landscape, but they need to cater to the geek population and have a way to connect from a PC. It would be nice to have some advanced networking capabilities available. It would also be good to have a way to turn off the Bluetooth after the network is configured. This almost feels like a tweener device. Not enough freedom for the geek and potentially too difficult for the less tech oriented. I would recommend to a friend, but the discussion will be long and intensive to get to that point.

Expectations - I began with high hopes of the Linksys Velop system and was quickly disappointed. There was a lot of buzz generated at CES this year regarding Linksys’ entry into the mesh WiFi world. Promising better coverage in large and/or multi-level homes. I found the improvements to be few, and the disappointments to be many. With it being the latest and greatest I also expected data rates to be as good or better than my current situation. For comparison, I current have an ISP supplied gateway (ATT) and for the upper level of my home an Apple Airport Extreme/Time Capsule (APETC). Design - The design certainly seems to take cues from the industry. Tall, slender and white with ventilation holes running along the top and two of the four sides. All ports, switches and buttons are located in a recessed well on the bottom of the unit. There is a reset button, power switch, power port and two ethernet ports. The latter is used to supply the primary unit with internet connectivity. Unboxing - On opening the box, you find the three Velop access points. Under the setup guide (a card instructing you to download the app) you find the supplied ethernet cable and then the three power adapters. The ethernet cable tends to “pigtail” due to it’s memory so it can be a nuisance if you want things neat and tidy as I do. Setup - Here starts the trouble. The only way to perform setup or changes in the configuration is through the Linksys Smart WiFi app. While this simplifies the setup and design, it severely restricts the ability to make any important configuration changes. It also locks these into whatever support is provided by Linksys. If they discontinue the product in the future, then you will be left with three doorstops valued at $500.00. On my first attempt, I could not get the app to establish communication over Bluetooth. So on my second attempt I choose the option to configure over WiFi. This was wrought with problems that caused the app to freeze at multiple points of configuration. Each time I would have to shutdown the app entirely, relaunch and sometimes it would pickup where I left off. But sometimes it would skip a step. I wound up with two separate SSID’s being broadcast and unreliable connections. So I performed a factory reset, a step only documented deep down on the website. On my third attempt I was able to get the BT connection started. One important note, only on the website documentation does it explain that you must wait until the light glows purple before you can establish a connection. So you must wait 2-3 minutes after plugging in to be able to begin the setup. While setting up under BT, there was also one time when the app froze and I had to start over. After I was able to complete the setup of the base unit, setting up the other two were quite easy. It’s a bit of a slow process, but the app seems to do some extensive testing to assure that you will have a quality connection in the location that you have selected. When you’re done, you have three wireless AP’s meshed neatly and operating under one SSID. I live in an 1800 sq.ft. townhouse. I placed the primary Velop in the basement where it connects with the ATT gateway. The second was located on the ground floor in our living room. The third unit I placed on the second floor in the office where the the APETC currently resides. Operation - The single status light on the top of the Velop provides indication of startup, setup state, operation and loss of connectivity by way of different patterns and colors. When setup and operating in a well lit room, you barely even notice it. But in a darkened bedroom there are sporadic flashes that can be annoying. I would suggest that you consider this carefully when planning the placement on each node. The most disastrous result of this mesh network was the loss of all other networked resources. All shared printers and drive volumes were completely inaccessible when connected to the Velop from any computer or mobile device in the house. The only way to access those resources is to enable a wired ethernet connection. In my option, this makes the Velop useless. Other issues remain with the app itself. Not only are you unable to change many important settings, but the functions of the app often fail. They include a “speed test” portion. In my attempts the speed test would fail 80% of the time. Sometimes presenting an error immediately and other attempts it would seem to finish the download test and then error on the upload. Performance - One would think that spending a premium on a mesh network would bring data rates better than other devices on the market. Ping times (something that seems to be especially important to gamers) rose dramatically. From an average of 19ms when using the APETC or ATT, to 30ms or more on the Velop. My internet is rated to be 24Mbit/sec down, 5Mbit/sec up though I frequently see higher downloads due to over provisioning. So in theory, the Velop should get me to the max on downloads with the bottleneck being my upstream connection. For the most part, speeds were on par with my previous arrangement. I saw an improvement in the first floor bedroom, but all other areas were about the same. Granted, the previous arrangement required me to manually switch between AP’s to obtain the best reception and throughput for each location. But the previous setup also afforded me greater configurability and access to networked printers and drives. I would like to have compared the transfer speeds on my internal network. This would be a true test of the speed capabilities of the Velop. But this was not at all possible. When connected to the Velop, I could not access any other resources that are shared on the network. No shared printers, drives, ANYTHING! That’s a deal breaker for me! Pros: * Simple setup when you have accurate instructions * Mesh coverage for large areas or multiple levels Cons: * Unreliable app * No web-based configuration available * Average performance * Not suited for gamers * No access to shared network resources * Pricey Verdict: If you need mesh coverage; and don’t want/need to do much configuration; and don’t mind paying a premium; and don’t mind waiting until the app issues are resolved; and don’t need access to shared printers or drives; and are willing to take a gamble on longevity of support then this might be a good choice. Otherwise, check out the competitors and see if their options may be better for your situation.

Let me get the bad out of the way first, my experience with using the app and getting all three nodes connected wasn't the greatest experience. The first two nodes connected very easily and when I got to the third node, I had nothing but problems. The node turned blue saying it was connected, but the app would not register it. After restarting the whole process again with the third node, and restarting the app a few times, I finally gave up. I did test connection with the ethernet port on the third node and it was working fine, but the app will not recognize it, so that is where it currently sits. This node does drop connection once in a while as well, so perhaps I have a bad node. I will call Linksys about it and hopefully they will have an answer for me. The good, the looks of these things are great. I love the retro-modern look of them and the recessed ethernet, power, and buttons are a nice addition and the cable managing system is a welcome feature. Connection speeds is 100% as described on all of my nodes (even the one that drops connection. I have basically used the system to have ethernet wiring in my house without the added expense. The two nodes have been rock solid with connection, just the third one has dropped once in a while. I currently have my Tivo Bolt and a Tivo Mini connected using these and they work perfectly as if connected via ethernet. (Wirless connection between the two is not supported by Tivo, so this is a way to bypass that.) Overall I would recommend this to family and friends, but tell them to watch out for a bad node. Hopefully I am just an anomaly in the Velop world.

Darn good at the key things. Deserves better app.

I'm retired after decades in the computer industry. I enjoy helping friends with their technology needs. I've helped install the Velop tri-band systems in multiple locations. I recommend Velop whenever a home has dead spots, large areas to cover, or multiple spaces on a plot of land. Pros: Fairly easy to set up even if you're not a computer wiz. The app walks you through the steps with clear language. Most reviews say that Velop covers more area than competing mesh routing systems. There's good feedback in confirming whether a new unit is placed sufficiently to relay the wifi signal from the next nearest one. The system is reasonably stable and consistent once you place each unit (node) satisfactorily. The system offers the option of using a single SSID (wifi network name) for 2.4 and 5gHz networks. Your wifi devices grab what they want because Linksys feeds them without having to specify. The system can also provide a guest network for visitors to your home. This allows them to get in the internet but shields them from accessing all the other devices in your home. (Thus providing privacy for your family's data, etc. Cons: I really think Linksys could have beefed up the functionality of the app with features that us geeks have been using in most conventional wifi routers. It's clear that the company placed a high priority on making the system easy to use. And they've done a pretty good job at that. But that doesn't hinder them from building in more advanced configuration options. Neither the app nor the web administration interface offer a way to backup and restore your settings. Linksys does send the configuration to their cloud servers. But if you ever have a reason to do a factory reset (or create a similar setup in another location), you have to manually configure all your network settings from scratch. It's not cheap. At least not yet. Bottom line: Having weighed all the advantages and drawbacks, Velop is easy to set up and it gets wifi into all the nooks and crannies. If you have a cottage across the way. Or a chimney blocking the wifi signal. Or lots of masonry dramatically dropping internet access, the Velop system can punch through.

This product is intriguing due to its simplicity of setup and the ease at which you can expand your coverage. unlike a range extender that will us it's own SSID these tie together and expand a single SSID which makes connecting devices seamless. The setup was easy however I was a bit nervous that I had to disconnect my current router which i have to say is phenomenal. The current setup is a Linksys EA 9500 and a range extender. It has great throughput but it has to cover three floors of approximately 1500 feet each so when you get to the third level wifi becomes dicey which is why I have an access point connected to the router. The router is also located in a network closet where all wired connections terminate. There are 38 LAN drops and most are used. Things that are important to me are throughput (I have a gigabit internet connection), the ability to reserve LAN IP's (two servers, alarm system, etc) and good VPN and remote access. Whenever possible I use a wired connection but don't have reservations about going wireless when necessary. So far the Velop has performed well although not to the standards of the previous setup. For most this would probably not be an issue but I do put a consistent load on my router. Setup was easy and painless and took about 5 minutes per node. It is literally plug and play, just follow the instructions on your phone, yes you use a wireless device to set everything up. Everything auto configures so even a novice to networking could have it up and running in no time. Once setup was complete wifi worked like a champ. Since I used the same SSID as before all the wireless devices connected without issue. One of the first things I did was run a speed test I did this from both the app and from a web browser. I am see very different results. On the app it is showing 800+ Mbps down and 900+ up. The browser is showing <100 down and 600 up. In either case it should not be a problem but I would like to understand the delta. Overall though the system is function as described and looks great. The nodes actually look like little pieces of art so that is a bonus.

I replaced my EA9500 with this beast and so far it's amazing with no hiccups. It's really easy to install but it did take me around 30 minutes to connect 3 nodes and to find optimal locations for each. The app you have to download is very user friendly that even 60+ year olds can hook it up. They really thought about the future when creating these. I like the small details such as the friendly wire management. The connection is great everywhere in our house now. This is truly the best routing system I have ever had the pleasure of owning and using.

We bought three units, one for each floor of our home. It was really easy to set up, the app walked me through every step of the process. No more dead zones in the house and our wi-fi now easily supports all the connected devices. Very happy with this product.

The system comes in a great presentation package. Had a hunch to uninstall and reinstall the Linksys Android App prior to set up which helped to clear any previous Linksys Routers in my app and created a better set up experience. I first set up 2 of the nodes which took approximately 20 minutes. I connected 7 devices with ease. My devices stayed connected so far for the last few days with no trouble. The speed test showed 25mbps download which is correct for my IP. I mostly have AC wireless devices and found the connection speed to average around 650 mbps. My previous Linksys router connected at a more consistent 866.7 mbps with a few slight drops at times but not for very long intervals. I suspect the idea here is consistency with the connection vs speed. I set up the 3rd node next to my home work space PC and still had a consistent 650 mbps. This info is for some of you that are more interested in the technical aspect. *I needed an Ethernet switch to add a desktop and a My cloud device that are located at the first node otherwise I would have to sacrifice one of these. I have explored the app quite a bit and do not see any real way to tweak my network other than a channel scan, but I am still becoming familiar with this system. This is meant to be a very user friendly system for those who prefer to not do any real setting changes. I'm hoping Linksys will add more user interface to the app, possibly a "Advanced User" option. I do see this as cutting edge technology and highly recommend. Another star could be earned if Advanced user access is added to the App.

I just as looking for a replacement system to cover the whole house and see gigabit speeds on my wi-to network. Set up was easy. Speeds improved over over my EA2600 but they are no where near gigabit. I get anywhere from 170mbps-330mbps. Coverage is cool. App is nice.

After trying their competitors Tri-Band system, Linksys just knocked the competition out of the water. I have so many devices connected to my network and majority of them are connected via Ethernet cable. With the new Linksys, I am able to go completely wireless now without my performance being affected. In one room I could stream 4k and play online games in another room, and be able to connect to my wireless security system with no issues. The setup was very easy too. The app told me exactly what to do and when. It was fairly simple. I am very pleased with the range as well. It extends almost the full length of my yard, and the performance is nothing I really experienced before. I am very impressed!!! I haven’t really ran into any issues like the others experienced. Granted, this system has a limited amount of Ethernet ports, but that is the whole purpose is to become wireless. The app works good for my needs. The design of the nodes is nice too. It kind of reminds me of those automatic air fresheners and it easily blends into the decorations. I have very pleased with this Tri-Band system and I would recommend this for anyone that wants to go completely wireless, that doesn’t have deadspots within their house and wants a constant speed. Great work Linksys!
