On Par Performance, Special Features Weak

Overall this wireless router performs on par with others that I have used. I'm currently using it behind a UVerse RG. This can present a couple challenges, but those are easily overcome with moderate technical skills. I've compared the throughput with the ISP provided wireless and an Apple Time Machine (AirPort Extreme). It's throughput is neck-and-neck with both the ISP router and the APE. Even though it's using 802.11ac, hardwired ethernet is still faster. So I would rate the performance as a strong average. Where this unit is weak is in the setup, support and extended features. On first boot and connection, it attempts to have to complete a simple, generic setup. While this may be fine for 80% of consumers, having to put it behind a router without a true bridge mode will not work. You have to jump through a few hoops to get to the manual setup. Once configured, I wanted to check out their implementation of the USB port for shared network storage. This is where it really falls apart. On the USB port they support only NTFS and allegedly HFS+. My drive was formatted with ExFAT so initially it did not work. After reformatting, I was finally able to mount the drive. But then the disappointment set in. I had connected a 60GB drive but only 103.5MB were available. The drive was freshly formatted with no other data so I never could determine what had happened. Also, the page that displays the connected USB device would sometimes update and sometimes not. If you create a new user or share, then it doesn't accept the username and password that you have assigned. Only uses the preset information. What makes it worse is the documentation! The user guide included on the CD in the box is very generic. It provides little information other than initial generic setup. Attempting to obtain more information on the support website was an exercise in futility. Search abilities on the website are rudimentary and very little additional information was available. For instance, I was only able to find out what USB drive formats were supported from a review on another website. Often when I was able to find what I was looking for, it did not match what was actually displayed on the web interface of the router. In summary, if you're looking for just a simple router, to use in a very generic situation, with good wireless rates then this is an acceptable solution. If you have enhanced needs or wish to connect a USB peripheral to share on the network, then you should look to using equipment from another manufacturer.

I have been running into headache after headache since configuring this router. I work in IT and I am confident in my ability to set up a router such as this. Previously I was using a Belkin N600 DB Wireless Dual-Band N+ Router which worked like a champ until I decided to give this router a chance. The main reason I wanted to upgrade was to have the ability to use custom DNS and static IP reservations and up my wifi speeds, which the Belkin was having difficulty doing. Setup of the 3200 went fairly easy. Everything seemed to connect just fine. After a night, I woke up to my thermostat not connected to the 2.4 signal. I rebooted the router and reran the thermostat connection setup which lasted a couple of hours. This is a daily occurance. I am having to reboot this router two to three times a day because of dropped wireless on my XBox1, iPhones, my printer, thermostat, etc etc etc. I've put up with this for a while now and frankly my wife and I are getting tired of it. DNS addresses are also not being handed out. It continues to use the routers IP address as the DNS address. IPv6 continues to be used even though I have that setting disabled. The phone app is 50/50 when I go to use it. The actual range of wireless is very limited compared to my Belkin. I have reset the router to basically NIB status and reran my configuration only to be presented with the same headaches. I have found some settings in a forum that I will try and see if they help, but so far as of this review, I am returning this router. Settings I am going to try: 1. Enable Media Prioritization with Downstream Bandwidth set to 204800 2. Enable WMM Support (Default) 3. Wireless 5Ghz Protocol Mixed 4. Wireless 5Ghz Channel Width Auto or 80Mhz 5. Wireless 2.4 Protocol "b\g\n Only" 6. Wireless 2.4Ghz Channel Width Auto or 20Mhz 7. Both 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz Wireless Security "WPA2 Personal" not mixed

    Known Issue Drops Internet

Research yourself. AC3200 drops internet connection repeatedly. I bought the best, so I thought. I depend on internet for work. The router constantly, intermittently drops connection to cable modem. Very difficult to get it back. Rebooting, turning off, no tricks to get it to reconnect. Wireless is great and active as is the network. However, holding a stable internet connection is flawed. Latest firmware does not fix either. Google the router. Mine is 7 months old and will lose internet connection 5-10 times a day just in AM. And it doesn't just come back. This has happened with 2 different modems. New modems. I bought the 2nd modem only to discover it's the router. Linksys knows this but there is no fix to date. Again, Google the modem and you will find hundreds of complaints about this. Wish I knew before buying. NOW THE FIX: I broke down and flashed DD-WRT firmware, replacing Linksys firmware. It has worked flawlessly since. Never loses internet connection. GOOD LUCK.

Beware of Firmware updates that break router

1 week after my 1 year warranty expired, Linksys pushed out a firmware update to my router that caused wireless connections to drop connectivity after 3 - 6 hours of use. Wired connections were fine. The only way to get connectivity back for wireless devices was to reboot the router. Apparently this is a well known issue as a search on the internet showed that several people are experiencing this! The "fix" recommended by Linksys is to revert back to an earlier firmware version (1.0.6.181063), but even after doing that my router still drops wireless connections. Since my router is out of warranty (barely and they broke it!), my only option was to wait for them to come up with a new firmware version. So I am out of luck at this point. They did suggest to try setting the channel for the 2.4GHz network to 1, 6 9 or 11 instead of Auto with the channel width to 20 MHz, and for the 5GHz network to use channel 36 or 148, width to Auto. We will see if that does anything. Needless to say, I am not confident with Linksys at this point,. If you are considering purchasing this router, WAIT! Do some research and wait until they fix this issue. And then change the firmware update setting to MANUAL instead of AUTO!

Got this router as my home has increased in the number of devices connected to the Wi-Fi network. The 2.4 Ghz band works fine, however, when attempting to connect to the 5Ghz band, there are frequent drops and difficulty connecting to the network, giving off incorrect PW errors (even though the PW is correct and connected before) and just refusing to connect even though the router is right next to the device (for multiple devices including Alexa, google home, google mini, ipad, laptop computer, samsung phones). Power cycling fixes the inability to connect issue, however, I should not have to power cycle my router all the time. Called Linksys to fix and they gave a work around for the incorrect PW on the 5Ghz network (cannot be the same PW as the 2.4 GHz network) as to the frequent drops and inability to connect they attempted to give a work around of locking in the 2.4 band to 1 channel (which should auto switch if its congested) and to disable ipv6. Not sure how those things would help, and they didn't. Shouldn't have this many issues with a router out of the box, or have to spend 2 hours (with wait times on the phone and online), to fix this. 2 stars because it half works.

Fantastic Router But Falls Short Where It Matters

Looks: The aesthetic is slick and doesn't taint the cabinet where I place it. Signal: The signal is fantastic. I have maximum wireless signal in my room where as the router I used before did not. In addition, there is also a great signal boost in one of the areas in my house. Before, the WiFi signal was very weak, but after switching, the signal is fantastic. Speed: The speed is fantastic as well. A speed test showed that I was using up the best that my ISP can provide. Using the 5Ghz band and 802.11ac proves to be a great case in gaming and watching HD movies for it did lag in the slightest. User Interface: The user interface for this router is great. It is simple and easy to follow. It is also not confusing to navigate and I will say that it is one of the best features of this router. CON: The biggest con of this router is that I believe I had gotten a faulty unit. My computer and other devices connected to the router's network will still be connected, but the Internet connection will drop. This will occur every so 4-6 hours. It is very inconvenient and the only way I found to fix it is to reboot the router when it happens. This is completely unacceptable. If this was not an issue, I would have gave this router a 5 star. This might just be specific to me, but it is important to let the consumers know of this issue.

Good as wired router only for the time being...

For a router that has been out since September 2016, one would think that the wireless part would work a little better. If you run this router for any length of time the wireless connection becomes unstable and stops working. The only way to fix this is to reboot the router. Wireless performance stability can be had from anywhere between a few hours to a few days. It may be something specific to what I'm connecting to the network, but to me this is unacceptable for wireless technology that has had 15 years to mature. I give this router 2 stars because Linksys appears to be actively working on a software fix. But I cannot recommend this particular router for anyone who requires something that works trouble free. I'll be inclined to change my rating after a stable firmware is released, but the company should be ashamed of itself for releasing buggy products at such a high price-point.

    Terrible for Chromecasts

    Posted
    NetGeared

The visibility of most of our chromecasts would go in and out after installing this router. The Chromecasts that stayed visible were connected to an AP that was hard-wired to a LAN port. This makes me think there may be something wrong with the antennas or band management. Either way, I returned mine as it does not appear to be compatible with Chromecasts after trying numerous configuration changes. I wouldn't recommend to anyone who uses Chromecast, plans to, or is considering it for the future. Game streaming was also impacted as connecting to my SkyComputer, using LiquidSKy, became a 20+ minute ordeal. The stock ISP router has it's issues, but at least it would connect the first time in an expected amount of time. (~3 - 5 minutes.)

    Not for Windows 10

    Posted
    Dave

The router has a 3.0 port for external storage, the problem is that it is not compatible with Windows 10. As a matter of fact ( as per Linksys tech support ) none of their routers will support external storage with Windows 10. Their routers work on a smb1 protocol which is an unsecure platform that Windows has updated due to malware and ransomware ( wanna cry for example ). Microsoft strongly discourages enabling smb1 and Linksys has no update for their routers, and this has been for months ( fall creators update. ) So if you have Windows 10 and want external storage Linksys is not for you!

This is a solid router when it's working. I can get great signal coverage throughout a ~3k square foot home, even on the 5 GHz band. Unfortunately, there are some firmware/driver issues that cause intermittent WiFi drop-outs and DHCP to temporarily stop working. Sometimes they resolve on their own, sometimes they require reconnecting the device itself, and sometimes they require rebooting the router. There are probably better options out there at the moment, but if they get the WiFi issues resolved, this would be a very solid choice.

I did not have to restart or touch my old Linksys router more than twice a year. Then I purchased the WRT AC3200 Dual Band router. It has to be restarted multiple time a week in order to maintain any level of wireless reliability. Linksys has replaced it once and is in the process of sending a second replacement. Problem is I strongly do not believe the problem is hardware, but rather software. On that side it has been 5 months since the last firmware update. Very disappointed. On the positive side the NAS storage support is very good.

I had high hopes for this Router. It was super fast and easy to set up. But after attaching a hard drive to it, it does not map to Windows 10 as a network drive because it uses SMB Version 1 instead of version 2, which is what Windows 10 uses. Looking online at complaints, this has been an issue for over a year and Linksys still hasn't put out a firmware update to resolve this issue. Will return it for another router.

For what it's worth, the interface for configuring this has a really clean and pleasant design. Definitely not for an advanced user, though, so you would want to flash your own firmware on it. I didn't even get that far. I set it up, let it update itself, and it run for less than a day before completely dying. No lights, no SSID being broadcast, nothing. It will not read or detect .srt files paired with with a video file on an external usb drive. 2. You cannot write or paste into any files on the usb drive or even see "properties" when you right click on any file on the external usb drive. I returned it to Best Buy after 2 days.

Wired traffic unaffected, but Wifi would grind to halt. Changed some settings, no help. Finally returned it and got something else.
