Issues with Cord and Volume/ Mute Button

    Posted
    Chiaroscuro65

This headset is comfortable to wear, and fits over the ears well, so that any noise around me in my surroundings is reduced or eliminated as much as possible. This headset meets that requirement. However, it would probably work better if it had a design where it cups around your ears by having the "Ear Drivers" recessed and then have padded material that would surround each "Ear Driver" or speaker. Good clear microphone. Yes, this definitely has that. People said I am crystal clear. A wired headset should have a longer cord. This device fails in that area. Cord length for the H540 is too short. Logitech, what were you thinking with this short cord? The headset cord is too thick, compared to other headsets, and this presents a problem. Even the slightest movement, if you move the cord around on your desk as you are talking (which I can't avoid, since I am always moving around when I am on the phone) this produces noise that is picked up in the headset. You will hear the cord thumping and moving around in the earpieces, as well as the mic picks up the cord noise thumping and moving around, this is very distracting. The cord should be insulated better so it doesn't produce noise in the actual headset. I would suspect if Logitech redesigned this headset with a thinner cord this probably would resolve most of the issue. The Volume and Mute buttons should not be on the headset, and should be put on the cord with controls for these functions. When you push the Volume/Mute buttons on the H540 headset, it causes so much noise in both the earpieces as well as it's picked up by the mic. Also, the red Mute Indicator on the cord is another design failure. Even if Logitech doesn't move the Volume/Mute controls on the cord, the Mute indicator is too close to the headset, and should be placed further away from the headset so that the light is easier to see. It's distracting to have to look down against my shirt, where the indicator light is, to see if I have muted/unmuted the headset. It would be much easier if I could glance down on my desk, to see the Mute Indicator. This Logitech could have been a good headset, if it didn't have all these flaws. I returned this headset a couple days later, and then after doing some research I found the Microsoft LX-6000 headset on Best Buy's website. Microsoft got everything right with their headset: 1. The Microsoft LX-6000 cord is definitely long enough 2. The cord is thinner and does not produce noise in the headset when it's moved around. 3. Mute and Volume Controls are on the wire, and not on the headset, and are far enough away from the headset where these controls are easily accessible and easy to see when the Mute button is activated If you're looking for a better headset, I'd recommend the Microsoft LX-6000. If you want to upgrade to a better Logitech wireless headset, I'd also recommend the Logitech H800 which also has Bluetooth. Logitech has made many good headsets, but this H540 is a disappointment, it has too many design failures. At the time of this review, the H540 is $50 USD. For the amount of money that Logitech is asking for this, it should be much better.

I was looking for a headset to use for online chatting while in game or online conference calls (using Skype and Ventrillo). I wasnt too happy when I saw at the store that they only had a few sets to choose from. This one was about $20 so thought I'd give it a try being that I had no other choice, really. I ended up liking it because even though it covers both ears, its a lighter headset, so it doesnt feel heavy after wearing it for 1+ hours. The controls for the volume and muting are on the actual headset itself (its on the part that covers the right ear), not on the cord. I didnt think I'd like that either but again, it was actually quite easy. When you hit the mute button, a red light comes on, on the cord so its very easy to tell you're muted. All in all, this turned out to be a great set of headphones. So much so, that I plan on purchasing a second pair.. Because you know, when you find something you really like and try going back later to buy another one.. They're gone and they done make them anymore! So if you're looking for a good headset (sound is great as well), try this one! Cant beat it for the price

    Does not work with USB3

Logitech products are usually great. But this one will disappoint anyone with a modern PC or laptop that has only USB3 ports. I have purchased two separate H540 headsets and tried them both on two separate computers. On one computer I received a message that the unit was defective; on the second computer I received the message indicating that a proper driver could not be found. Researching this matter on the Internet, I found that hundreds of people have reported the same problem to Logitech and on community chat sites. Logitech appears to blame Microsoft for this fiasco, since headset drivers appear to be within Microsoft's jurisdiction, and they have refused to create drivers. I think the least they could do is put a warning label on the box since anyone purchasing a USB product today would expect that it would be compatible with a USB3 port – the current standard – as well as legacy USB ports. Fortunately, one of my computers does have a USB2 port, and the H540 works perfectly on that port. This experience has shaken my confidence in what I had perceived to be a top company.

I purchased these headphones to use with a Rosetta Stone program for learning a foreign language. It is very easy to understand what the program is instructing me to do, and I think the microphone seems to pick up my verbal responses correctly. Sometimes the program doesn't understand what I say, but that is probably my difficulty in pronouncing the words, rather than the Logitech h540 actually causing any problems. My only complaint is that the headphones sit on the ears lightly, rather than "cupping" around the ears, so head movements sometimes result on a tug on the wire connecting the set to the computer's USB port. This tug occasionally moves them from the best position to listen. This reduces the comfort of wearing them just a little bit, but is usually only a minor aggravation. Although there are wireless headphones available from Logitech, they are a bit more expensive. Rosetta Stone recommended using the wired ones to minimize any risk of interference when using their program.

I recently had to take some online classes that required the use of a headset. It's been some time since I needed a headset for work and it was short notice about needing a headset for the class so I didn't have time to do some comparison shopping. The sales rep at Best Buy was great and had a lot of useful information. I wish I would have made note of his name. He asked what I needed the headset for, work, gaming....ect. Once he had the information he showed me his recommendations and explained why he was recommending each headset. The Logitech - H540 On-Ear USB Headset was well priced, it wasn't the most expensive or the least but for the price, it appeared to fit the bill. Once class started we all discussed what type of headset we had and the Logitech was the preferred choice by most of the class. I was pleased with the sound and for the size was pleasantly surprised how light and comfortable it was. I definitely recommend the Logitech - H540 On-Ear USB Headset, you won't be dissapointed!

I purchased this headset as a backup for my Logitech G930. If you have or know anybody that has a G930 then you probably know they randomly lose signal and reconnect. This is quite annoying when talking to friends or gaming so having the H540 on hand is very nice. There are no install steps or anything like that, just simple PnP so as long as your Windows OS does not get cranky with you it should work almost instantly. I do have some issues getting it to sit nicely on my ears but this may just be from only using over-the-ear headsets for the last few years. Other family members state that it feels fine and sounds good so I guess it is just up to your preference for headset style. Also want to point out that, as this is a backup for my G930, I use this headset roughly once or twice a week so it is not being used heavily daily which would definitely play a role in how it feels/functions. I believe it would work just the same if used heavily daily though. TL;DR - This headset is great for general usage, sounds good, easy to wear, and does not seem to be made cheaply (so far). I'm happy with my purchase :)

    Great headset for the kids

I bought this headset for a family member that had younger children(9 and 3) and wanted something they could use to hear their games, movies, music and talk to Grandma on Skype. With the 3 year old being a typical 3 year old I knew they would quickly try and reverse-engineer the whole thing and break it if there were any fragile parts and this headset did not appear to have any. The boom mic is rather short and easily tucked up into one earphone so out of sight out of mind is a big part of its protection, also because the mic isn't a long bendable easily wielded as a weapon, again helps this headset keep a high durability rating. The few days I used the headset before it departed home the sound quality it produced was rather impressive, lows and highs sounded good and what you would expect in this price range. After nearly two months of use and plenty of Skype discussions between my kids and my brothers in another state this headset appears to have really held up rather well. So as a parent I would recommend this as semi-child proof.

I was looking for a headset to use for dictation. I was directed to two places in the store looking for and headsets with a mike boom. This one fills my minimum requirements there were only two USB headsets compatible with Macintosh. The two USB headsets differed in that one had two earpieces the other had only one. In the gamers section they had both Bluetooth which I would have preferred and a cable. I told the clerk I was looking to use it with a Macintosh. He recommended a couple. I chose one with a cable assuming it was USB. When I got home I found it was an audio plug not USB i.e. not compatible with a newer Macintosh. I brought it back the same day and discovered there were no headsets with USB in the gamer's section. So I only had two choices.

    Decent sound, causes sweaty ears

These had decent sound quality to them. Easy to use, just plug and play. The Mic was a bit sensitive and would pick up the sound from the headphones occasionally. This was solved by reducing the headset volume significantly, but that had obvious negatives as far as hearing details. The on-ear design always has the drawback of squishing your ear cartilages when wearing for a long time, but these caused major sweaty ears while doing so. They almost felt "too" lightweight? Any cord tension at all, and they were dislodged from proper position on my ears. They felt a bit cheap, but functioned as expected sound-wise for the price point. I ended up returning them for an over-ear set I purchased online. My ears were a bit sore after a week of wearing these nightly. So if you plan on wearing them for less than an hour and less than daily, then these would probably work for you.

I bought these as I was starting a new work from home schedule and needed an usb headset. After returning a gaming pair that were too large for me causing them to be unwieldy and heavy pinching in my jawline yet offered excellent sound quality; I bought these. They worked true to plug and play fashion which was good. However the feel and thr creaking sound of the slick plastic of the headset and the cheap feeling leatherette padding which isn't that comfortable after a few hours makes these a pinch hit while I order another pair. Ive had these now for about 2 weeks and the sound quality is starting to diminish. I'll have to keep these as I missed the 15 day return policy by a few days now as my schedule is hectic. I am definitely ordering another brand headset not being able to purchase directly the Sennheiser pair I originally wanted but bestbuy doesn't carry in store. If i could I'd return these in a minute.

I bought these for use at work and liked them so much that I now use them for gaming instead. The sound is good but not great. The controls are located on the right ear piece, easy to use and intuitive. A bright red led built into the cable tells you when the mic is muted. I plugged these into my Windows 10 machine and they simply worked. No need to load drivers or do anything more. Windows 10 automatically routed 'communications' to the headset but I have to manually change over the system sound to the headset to switch from speakers for gaming. The only negative I have is that these sit on your ears with a decent amount of pressure. Over time it becomes tiring. I would prefer larger cups that go around my ears but for the price and quality, this is a minor issue.

Easy plug and play installation. Becomes sweaty and uncomfortable after a couple hours of use. No complaints from my audience on sound quality of my voice coming through. Sound quality is decent for gaming, but I would not recommend for quality music or movie use. Overall, for my use, I enjoy this headset, but after a couple hours of use, I tend to change my playback settings to my speaker to take a break from wearing them. Only design complaint I have is tied to the mute and volume buttons are on the side of the headset, meaning if you are wearing them, you have to feel for the mute button. There is a LED indicator on the headset wire that will tell you if you are mute, but it would be nice if the buttons and the light were on the same toggle. I feel like I am looking for my baseball with my hand up to my ear and my neck cocked down looking at the light.

I bought these to replace a Freetalk Everyman. I returned them immediately. I got them to use with Skype. They are completely unusable with Skype. I can't believe that Skype has them on its list. The audio quality that the microphone is picking up is horrible. Just horrible. It's one of those short boom mics. The audio from the mic, as heard in a skype test casll, is crackly and very low fidelity. I compared them to the Freetalk Everyman. Not even close. Also, the balance is off. When the volume is low enough that you can stand to listen on the ear side, the volume of audio you have recorded is way too low. Also, the mic is supposed to be "noise canceling." Hogwash. There was some very low background sounds from the kitchen. The mic just amplified them. This is just terrible, substandard gear. Do not buy.

I think the sound quality is fine all the way around. I can hear fine, and no one ever mentions struggling to hear me. However, I am not a fan of the style of the ear pads. They are not at all molded - just flat pads. As long as I sit straight upright and do not move, the headphones stay in place ok, but if I bend over, or tilt my head to the side, they slide off my ears. And due to them not be molded my ears get "tired" from the pressure of the flat pads if I have to wear them for more than a couple hours at a time. (Often for work I have them on for most of the day.) I use these for now, because I purchased them, but I do not recommend them for long term wear, and as soon as they begin to wear out I will search for a better headset than this.

Got these to perform WebEx training courses. At first WebEx wouldn't recognize them at all. Then when I had worked over the settings on my pc, making them the only venue for sound/mic use, they worked fine. Unfortunately, all of a sudden they started cutting on and off, with a loud clicking heard on the headphones. From then on they reset the sound on my pc, constantly turning the sound up so that the volume scale was on my pc screen. Which also made them unusable. Thought it might be a loose plug on the pc, nope. Thought it might be the pc... New pc, now they are cutting out, turning volume up, and generally useless. Kinda funny seeing I have only used them a half dozen times. Its clear the wiring of these with the mute and the volume control is defective. Don't waste your money on these.

I purchased these headphone to use while playing video games on my PC. So far, the headphones deliver high quality sound, and I don't have to go through the extra steps of turning on my speakers and subwoofer like I did with my much older headphones. These headphones are also extremely comfortable and allow for hours of wear. The volume control if a simple two-button system on the right side. I haven't had much need as of yet for the microphone, but when I recently used it, the other people online didn't seem to have a problem hearing me. The headphones connect via a simple plug-'n-play USB cord. The headphones are adjustable to fit for different sizes. I am happy that I ordered these and would order them again in the future. I have been using them for about two months now.

The sound quality on this Logitech is much better than the $50 wireless Logitech I purchased a year earlier. People on the other end said I sounded like autotune occasional, but that was likely due to the battery strength dropping. So, I opted for the wired version this time. I've had no complains so far about quality and things sounds great to me. The comforts seems okay as well. If I'm on a long conference call (3+ hours), it will start to get unconfortible on the ears and I need to shift one side off to rest an ear. My main complaint is the thick cord. It has hardly any flexibility and bangs into the desk all the time which you really hear echo in your ears (but not on the other end). It still is in the 'Z' shaped packaged form and will likely never straighten out.

I love this headset. It features a stylish but simple and comfortable design. It is lightweight and not too bulky. I like that the microphone arm can be fold into a slot between earphone and headband, when not in use, giving it a sleeker appearance. Volume control and microphone mute is on the headset. Thanks to a red light on the cord, one does not have to worry about whether or not the mic was muted. Sound and audio quality are great. I have received many compliments about how clear I sound over Skype. Background noise is definitely reduced to the point where I can playback recorded audio and all I hear is the clear sound of my voice. For the price I paid with the sale and reward certificates, I am wholeheartedly satisfied. Definitely recommend this product!

This is a great headset for usage at home. I was unsure if this headset would work well for what I wanted (skype/gaming) but I got it anyway. I was happy to discover that it is a great headset for those purposes. Very comfortable and the adjustments for size are easy to use. Additionally, the sound is fantastic and the earphones muffle out sounds around u pretty well. I like the volume control on the ear phone but my only complaint is that the mute is very close to the volume, which makes sense but I would have liked it on the cord. Ultimately it is a great headset for in home use. I'm sure there are lighter headsets for portable usage but if you are looking for a good headset for home usage, then this is a good choice.

Before this I used Skull Candy Headphones, not really willing to buy anything over $50 and still not inclined to. I can't remember if they were priced down when I bought them but I asked an employee if they were better than skull candy because logitech is a good brand for tech. They said yes and said I could always return if I disliked the headset. Well, the sound quality is amazing compared to what I was used to. I also really like the fact that if you only want them as headphones the mic stub isn't in the way, which also has great recording quality. As headphones they sound amazing, as a headset it works great and blocks out a lot of unnecessary background noise that a lot of headsets leave in. Highly satisfied.
