A Great Durabe Speaker System for Long-Term Use

    Posted
    Byzantyndragon

I've actually had this speaker system for three years now (or maybe an earlier version of this system) and thought I'd add my review just to let you know that it is still working great after three years of constant, intense use! When set right, the audio experience of this speaker system challenges my home-theater! I like how I can adjust the bass on-the-fly and not have to get into my speaker settings on the computer to do so. Also, having a headphone jack away from the tower is a plus to avoid wire-tangling issues and accidental jerks-and-yanks that can damage soundcard jacks. Having the power and volume controls handy at your side is a plus too. Now, the only issue I have is when I play dvd's with 5.1 surround encoding on them and want to listen with my headphones. Usually, I just get the two back channels (no dialogue track) when I try that. I have to either set the sound channels to simple stereo in the computer's settings or use the computer's on-board headphone jack (works fine, but not as convenient). This could just be an issue with the player software, but that's the only glitch I've had. In most other cases the sound through the headphones is true. The wires for the front speakers are oddly short, not allowing me to spread them out for a broader soundscape. Extension cords may help, but I can do without the line-loss of multiple connections. The center speaker is a bit too bulky to hang off my monitor and overpowers the other speakers in that position unless the sound to it is nearly turned off. It's better just sitting behind the monitor firing up at an angle. Otherwise this is a great long-term investment for someone's computer sound system! Beware cheaper multi-speaker systems that only have a single jack! They are only two channels spread over five speakers and a subwoofer, NOT true surround like this one is (with three jacks for front r/l, rear r/l, and center/subwoofer). I got burned buying one of those "5.1 compatible" speaker systems. Go for the Logitech and make it real!

    Nice Sound Quality

The x540 Logitech 5.1 System has very nice sound quality for a price point of $80 to $100. Obviously, everyone agrees on that. So, what could be improved upon (other than cord length): Overall appearance of speakers (theres no need for the all black prehistoric look, in fact the oval appearance of the 530 was slightly better than this model. Or, how about some wood like on the z-3 series? It would be nice to atleast have some options here.) Logitech does include swivel bases on this model intended for mounting on the wall, however they apparently forgot this is a surround sound system. Position of the speakers is critical if there is no calibration tool, and regretfully, the mounting technique of these speakers allows very little room for adjustment. I found 9 times out of 10 the speakers end up pointing away from you when wall mounting them. Now, this feature is not nearly as bad as the center channel speaker. After the z-640 and x-530 logitech eliminated the stand alone center for a creative, but impractial monitor-attached speaker with absolutly no ability to mount on the wall unless you get out the drill. I found this pretty dissapointing. Finally, the overall acoustic sound quality seems to have gone down from the 530 series. Summary: aside from bulky just plain ugly speakers, impractical mounting setup, and so so acoustic quality, these are good speakers for less than a $100 bucks. Just keep in mind you will need a big desk for all the speakers that you wont be mounting on the wall. A side from that, if bassy loud movies, music, and games or your thing, and you dont notice the little imperfections in sound quality, you would probably be quite happy with this system. (theres a reason why logitech makes THX certified systems, theres a difference!) Thanks for reading!

Awesome system for what I need it for.

I purchased this system as a surround sound system to use with my projector. I watch movies and play games via my Xbox 360. I didn't need a system that could be heard down the road. I just wanted good, basic sound as my projector has none. I didn’t want to spend more than $90. With that being said, it is far better than I had expected from computer speakers. I mounted the front 3 speakers to the wall under the projected image and the rear speakers to the ceiling behind the couch. The mounting was easy and affective, but the single notch mounting system feels cheap(especially for mounting on the ceiling). The front center speaker does not have a mounting notch of any kind, so I had to drill holes in the base of it with a drill press to get it mounted on the wall. Also I have the subwoofer about 20 feet from the wall where I project my image, so the cords were nowhere near the length I needed. No problem though, I purchased extra RCA cables and adapters. Those issues with the fact that the remote is not wireless, making the placement of the remote awkward, I had to give the compatibility a 4 star rating(I would say it’s more like a 4.5). I suppose I'm being bias as I am using the system a bit outside of its intended use. If I were to use it on a computer desk I would be blown away for sure. This system overall is perfect for a small environment. I would not recommend it for anything bigger than your average living room. Although my basement is 1000 square feet and you can hear it clearly throughout the basement at a medium volume. Not just where the sound is playing. I got this system on sale for $74.99 so it was within my budget. However, after hearing it set up in my basement, I would definitely have paid the $105 it is going for now. On a weird side note, it sounds better when I am gaming than when I am watching a movie. By no means a bad thing, just an observation.

Don't be fooled by the cheap price! This speaker setup was one of the best purchases I've ever made. I've had it for two years now, and I couldn't be happier. It really sounds like a much bigger system. At first, I used it for games and such on my computer, and have since set it up in my dorm as a full home theater. It comes with an adapter to hook up any DVD player, game system or whatever. The most impressive feature of this system is the sound. It sounds just as good playing some casual music as it does pumping out thundering bass on an action movie. I am a sound technician, so I know good quality when I hear it. I've turned up the subwoofer all the way, cranked the volume, then played the most intense movies I have, and there is no static or distortion of any kind, even at the limit. My friends are always fooled into thinking this is a much more expensive and larger system. All the speakers can easily mounted to a wall, completing the home theater look. The wires are long enough to reach all the way around my entire living room, so I can put the speakers where I want. The only think this system could use is a remote control. Other than that, this a top quality system that will continue to impress you for many years to come.

Speakers- The speakers themselves are flawless. The cables could be longer. If you plan on mounting these speakers on the wall you will need RCA audio extensions. (Unless your room is the size of a closet). Sub- The down firing sub is good, but the speaker does not have a grill on it. That means something could puncture the speaker and effectively ruin the sub, Just be careful when unpacking it. Cable Management- These speakers have 1 wire that attaches to them. When you decide to mount them to a wall. (I don't know who wouldn't) You will need RCA extensions. I bought some cable holders at another store and nailed the cables at the corners of the room and routed them down to the baseboard. The cables are completely invisible. Overall- When the lady at checkout asked if I wanted a warranty from best buy I told her no because I've never had a problem with a logitech product. This system is versatile. I have it set up to my computer, and can switch it to my TV to my Xbox 360 by just switching a single cable.

I bought these speakers back in March and I have to say, I love this product and many of Logitech's others. This is a 5.1 surround sound speaker system that you can hook yp to your computer,Ipods,mp3 players and you can even use it for your gaming consoles and T.V. These speakers deliver a nice clear sound and will blow any 2.1 configuration that's out there. The sub woofer is surprisingly small. it has a down force placed sub woofer with a ported enclosure. The sub woofer can deliver a powerful punch to fit nicely with any volume you play with. On the control pad, it has the power on button, the bass control knob, the master volume control, and a button called "Matrix." The matrix button takes your ordinary stereo sound music and converts it into 5.1 surround sound music. Also on the pad, it comes with a built in standard headphone jack. For a caution of warning, if you plug your headphones into the jack, you can NOT control the volume with the master control knob on the pad. You will have to control it with what ever Program you are using to listen to music or turn down your volume using the volume control function that's already built in your computer/sound card software. These speakers are perfect for anyone who is new to the surround sound world. On the back of the sub woofer, it has 8 spots where you plug everything in and Logitech has given you the ease by color coding the speaker wire and the hole in which they go to.

I've been looking at these speakers for a few weeks now. Watching and reading reviews had majority good things coming out of this set with the occasional "don't buy these" reviews added in. Nevertheless, I wanted them so I got them. Had a coupon anyway. I am satisfied with the purchase. Of course you're not going to get the sound quality of a $300+ system but the X-540's are not a light competitor either. I was surprised just how good this system sounds. Setup was easy, took longer to unpack everything than it did to set up. I went into Google and searched for "5.1 surround sound tests" and sure enough they work like a charm. I do not know how this system sounds on integrated audio chips as I am using an X-Fi sound card but either way, for a computer, this system is more than adequate. Fills the room (and most of the house) with great sounding music and the occasional gunfire and explosions from Call of Duty. Also found some truth in a review I saw....."The higher you turn the volume up, the better it sounds" haven't run into any distortion. I am one that does extensive review searches and this is a purchase that I do not regret making.

For the money i cant imagine how anyone could give this product less than excellent ratings unless they are doing something wrong. I integrated this sound system into my HDTV, PS3, and desktop pc. I watch dvds, play pc games, listen to music, and watch tv all through these speakers (in my bedroom). As long as you have one RCA cable, its a breeze connecting everything. Within 5 mins I had everything up and running perfectly. The sound that is produced for each aspect of what i use it for is excellent. Music, gaming, movies, tv, etc. The bass is very very solid. The mid-high range is good enough for me. Obviously if you pay more you will get higher quality - but there really is nothing that beats this system until you get to the 200-250$ range. The speakers can be wall mounted very easily. The center speaker can easily be mounted on top of a flat screen tv. I really dont have any complaints about this product, except the lil pod center. I dont know why its not wireless, but otherwise this is the best purchase you can make for a pc sound system in this price range. And again, I use it as an all in one entertainment center with my hdtv/ps3/pc/etc, and it definitely delivers.

    Great for under a buck

"I purchased this product to get more boom out of my laptop (euphemism), & to use for gaming (360). I really like the fact that your able to easily attach the center speaker to a flat-panel. The rear wires are a bit short depending on how you tend to setup your room (you may need to get extensions). I use the virtual mode to connect my laptop & 360 (you will need a 3.5mm splitter if you wish to not have to manually change the wires every time you fire one or the other up). All-in-all what I use this product for it gets 5 stars for under a buck (100$) you'd be hard pressed finding anything better. In the under a buck range your looking at extremely cheap HTiB which don't even have any AUX inputs. Sure as heck won't be SP/DIF or even RCA. Long story short if your looking for a new sound system for <100$ this really is the ''only'' real option. I only need to bring the volume to around a 1/3 then I'm happy. YMMV. Don't let the wattage fool you, many people think more= better. It's not that simple. For someone starting out & wanting to enjoy 5.1 for under a buck you can't go wrong."

Well for the price you can't beat this system. 5.1 sound nice subwoofer all around great product. The sound quality far exceeded my expectations. Now you cant expect this system to fill a giant room but for an average size room its great. Bass really rumbles highs are clear and crisp. Only thing that was a little bit of an inconvenience was the speaker wires for the back speakers were not long enough had to go to Radio Shack to buy extensions for them but that only cost $12 to extend them both another 10 feet so no big deal. Would definitely recommend this system for anyone looking for great little surround sound package with BIG sound and a little budget. Now I read people said that the sound quality was bad and had distortion at higher volumes and the reason for that most likely was there sound card tested this with onboard sound, Sound Blaster x-fi and a cheapo no name sound card and both onboard and the x-fi sounded great the cheap sound card gave a great deal of distortion and horrible sound quality.

This system is definately a keeper. Logitech has been renouned for creating a quality product, from wireless keyboards to multimedia speakers, and here is another example of their unsurpassed quality. while not as pricy as the creature speakers or other designer speakers, this system actually works harder. While there are six of them, and that can be kind of difficult to place on a desktop or a living room, the speakers provide an excellent surround sensation, and incredibly high fidelity to whatever media is being played. however, there are drawbacks. the wiring on the speakers were, i thought, too short. it was difficult to spread the speakers out to a level that would allow for the best possible listening experiance. also, the fidelity was perhaps too clear, as minute imperfections in my media files suddenly became abundantly clear to me. maybe this could be ignored by adjusting the treble and bass, but whatever. i definately suggest this system to anyone who wishes to devote a significant portion to the sound of their box.

Ive owned this system for about 2 years now since my old computer speakers died on me. I ran off to best buy to find a replacement product that wouldnt burn a whole im my wallet. I've come to love logitech products for quality and bang for you buck but even when i saw these for a hundred bucks i was a bit skeptical. Like i said i have had this system for almost 2 years now and every time i use them i fall in love with them all over again. Don't let the Cons scare you off, if you have browsed this system while shopping at best buy and still are pondering to purchase them or not, just go already. The sound quality from the 5 surround speakers are crystal, and dont let the small size of the sub speaker (5.5 inch driver) fool you, this system can pump out plenty of bass! These truly our worth every penny you put into them and even if you have to spend the extra money to extend cords for setup its worth it in the end. My hat goes off to you logitech, you never fail to impress!!!

I bought these for my Xbox 360, plainly because no one likes the sound of TV built in speakers, :) Let me first say, they are a very good deal as far as price. Now, dont start thinking that they sound horrible because of the cons i wrote, they sound far better than the TV's speakers, but not great. As far as the muddy mids, the mids are average, muddy. The struggling trebles, because of the lack of tweeter speakers, the trebles (highs) sound strained and weak. And as far as the rumbling bass, its not tight or punchy, just rumbling, all about the power there. After all that though, its a good bargain, and a good addition to any average joe's gaming system. As for easy to setup, this is its greatest strength, and weakness, it has simple connections to the back of the TV, which means it will work with like 98% of TVs out there, but, this means it cant be hooked up to many of the more expensive home theatre systems. Overall, its a great buy for the average Joe, msholly

I purchased a set Logitech X-540 speakers while deoplyed to Iraq to put in my gun truck. Now I know you are saying, "wait these are computer speakers, not speakers for a vehicle." For anyone who has ever been in the service we all know military vehicles do not have any kind of sounds systems in them. So by taking a power converter and hooking it up to the gun trucks battery we were able to plug the speakers in that way for a power source. All that was needed then was to take the supplied audio cable and plug it into the headphone jack on your mp3 player. The volume these speakers put off is amazing. Lound engin, gun fire, these speakers were still able to be heard nice and clearly. A year and a half later these speakers are still kicking just as they were on day one. Rolling down the streets of Iraq or sitting at your computer at home you will not be disappointed!

Don't let its size fool ya. I recently purchased this unit after selling my previous PC (along with the surround sound system) and was surprised at how small the subwoofer was when compared with my previous system and was thinking about going to get my old one back at first glance, but after hooking this sucker up to my new PC I was blown away at the sound this thing kicks out. Even though my previous surround system had a bigger subwoofer and sounded great, it didn't come close to the floor pounding sound this Logitech system gives off. Needless to say, I'm VERY pleased with this buy. If your motherboard supports truly supports the surround sound technology (meaning you have at least 6 jacks in the back), then you should really consider this sound system. Don't waste your time trying to hook this or any surround sound system up to a 2-channel PC though because you won't even come close to getting the sound you're looking for.

These speakers are great, you get full 5.1 surround sound experience. You also get tons of bass. What was pretty cool to me was that there is a button on the control pad that says 'matrix mode' witch allows you to take that normal 2.1 channel and converts it into a 5.1 surround! Don't judge these great speakers on how loud or soft the rear speakers, because if you know anything about surround sound, the rear speakers generally run softer than the front speakers. Also these speakers are amazing when I'm gaming. I'm listening to them right now on itunes, they sound great! Also if your getting these speakers for your computer you might want to buy a 5.1 sound card to go along with them, it makes the sound quality a lot better. But don't spend too much on a sound card. ---Watch this YouTube Video(copy and paste into your internet browser)--- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wbbpN1UEps

I was looking for speakers for my 3g iphone just to add to what I already had. Had read about these speakers sometime ago. Went browsing to see what Bestbuy had today and thought of speakers. Checked out a few and saw these for $104 and said they weren't gonna be great but I'll listen to them just to see what sound I would get and bing-bam, I wasnt expecting what I heard. So I bought them. Got the little system home and plugged in and now I'm satisfied with this purchase. Dont know what others are talking about the rear speakers dont work. For one they're rear surround speakers so they wont work like the front speakers and if you want them on all of the time, turn your matrix on and it will deliver sound from the rear speakers. Anyway all-in-all, they're a good buy.

    Non-funtioning rear speakers

I read some good reviews about this setup and for the price I thought it would be a good deal. When I got home and set it up I could barely hear sound from the rear speakers, they were about 10% of the volume of my front/center ones. I know it wasn't my soundcard (I tested it with an old 5.1 setup to make sure). My second set also had this issue, so I gave up. Searching the internet turned up others who had this issue, and Logitech no longer supports this setup. I have always been satisfied with Logitech, but this setup appears to be an exception. Maybe thats why they are so cheap. I ended up spending a little more for the G51 and couldn't be happier. So I suggest either finding another brand or forking out the extra money for the G51.

I had the opportunity to hear a set of these speakers while training at Ft. Bragg, to be deployed down range, and after hearing them I knew they were what I needed for my computers. I purchased something to get me by while I was down range, but a few months before I returned home I ordered a set of these LOGITECH X-540 from your company and had them shipped home. I called it my birthday gift to myself. I am a happy camper. I have three(3) computers in my home. Two(2) desk top and one(1) lap-top. I told my wife I am going to purchase a set each for each computers. She loves the sound of them, but she is a bit conservative. I am hoping she will give in. If not,I 'll have to sneak and get them. once I have them it's a done deal.

These speakers are an absolute must! Compared to most other computer speakers out there, not only is Logitech a name brand you can rely on, but you get a full set for the price that you'd pay to get two speakers and a subwoofer from other brands! I use these for my laptop at home since I own two laptops (one for music production and one for school). Using these speakers for music production is incredible, the sound is rich, the subwoofer has extremely low decible levels, and the speakers have no hiss or hum when turned up all the way. Hear the bullets hiss by you as you watch a war movie on your laptop, or feel your seat rumble during an explosion. This speaker set is the answer to your computer audio needs!
