    Should work for most

    Posted .

The thought of having 4K cameras with a beefy storage unit sounds amazing. That is if it works for your situation. First off lets start with the setup. Connecting the storage unit is quite easy. HDMI connection an Ethernet connection and the power. There it 2TB of storage so you could record non-stop on all the cameras for about a month and a half without reaching the units limit! Once you get into the software there are a LOT of options and many are not intuitive. There is a mobile app but it is pretty much limited to viewing the cameras remotely. It is easy to configure the app. All you have to do is scan the code on the side of the main unit. On to the install. I had very specific locations for the cameras to be mounted. This is where the problems arose. Two of the locations were about 110 and 120 feet away from the unit. The included cables are 60 feet so I had two options, buy an additional cable to connect to the included ones or buy a single cable that would run the entire distance. I decided that I would add on to the existing cable. Fast forward, all the cables are in place and ready to go. So I connect the cable to the head unit and then proceed to the first camera. I keep my phone with me to pull up the app to see how things look. Plug in the first camera and no picture! I hear the camera "clicking" but noting appears. Maybe a bad camera? Tried a different camera with the same result. Maybe there was something wrong with the cabling? Tried a different location with the same result. The first two I started with were the most distant from the head unit. Tried one that was with about 40 feet and it came on with a picture! Tried the other close location and it worked too. Went to the Lorex website and opened a ticket. I have to say they are extremely responsive!! Not only did I receive an email, I also received a phone call. First recommendation was to drop the resolution from 4k to 2k :(. Tried that and still nothing. It was determined that over 100' it may not work! So if you can install with the included cables and not need an extension you'll probably be fine. I have to say that the picture quality of the cameras that are connected are excellent! I have not been able to activate the lights that are on the cameras even though that is supposed to be a supported feature. Something else to be aware of. There is no desktop application for the system. If you want to view your cameras on your desktop/laptop computer you will need to get the IP address from the dashboard and type that into your web browser. This will only work when you are on your network. This will not work when you're away from your location. When you're away you are limited to your mobile device. Here's an even bigger problem for most, the head unit only supports Internet Explorer!! If you use Chrome, Opera, Fire Fox or even Edge you're out of luck. The only browser plugin available is for IE. Really Lorex? This system almost seems like it wasn't ready for prime-time, but if you can get past a few qwerks, it might get the job done. I would only recommend this system to someone who is somewhat tech savvy and who's setup would not exceed the limits of the system.

I have a lot to say about this device—D841 series—Best Buy information, and Lorex Technical Support, which is polite, incompetent, and utterly contemptuous of your time. If your system does not set itself up nicely and easily you can waste more than an entire day trying to get help. 1) How good is the D841 Security System? I am sorry to say that it is a poor quality system when up and running at its best. The box says that it provides “Color Night Vision” and I bought it to get a good clear snapshot of a vandal who has been damaging my property in my backyard. The Best Buy salespeople explained that an alarm LED light goes on from motion detection and illuminates the vandal’s face. In fact, the LED light goes on but provides no effective illumination. There is no night color vision unless you provide it from ambient backyard lights. If you use color vision without your own ambient lighting the picture becomes so grainy that you lose motion detection; even if you had it the picture is so grainy even with 4K resolution that it is useless for legal purposes. (Best Buy also said that since I was using the system as a “plug and play” I would not need to connect to the internet, but once I needed help Lorex insisted that I connect the DVR to the internet, which with my set-up was a major problem.) So now you are stuck with the camera’s infrared night vision. Both day (color) and night (black and white) pictures are fine provided nothing moves. But if a person moves his face becomes fuzzy and blurry even at the maximum 7 FPS. This may allow you to identify a neighbor but not a stranger. Best Buy told me that the cameras rotate L & R and acted like this was too obvious to ask. In fact, these are plastic bullet cameras that rotate up and down but not L & R, which limits mounting options. Lorex would not tell me whether the camera lens is plastic or glass. On my second call, while I was on a very long hold with Lorex technical support I saw a way to increase the resolution of the output to the screen from 1080 to 4K, so I did so. I then lost control of the DVR. Lousy Lorex design lets you fall into this trap and Lorex does not have a reset option. You must hook it up to a 4K monitor to regain control. I drove back to Best Buy after making a consult with the Geek Squad. Geek Squad had no 4K monitor, but sent me to sales. Sales said that the system record was probably limited by the monitor so that to have 4K recording I needed to buy a $300 4K monitor. I checked back with Geek Squad and this seemed right to them so I bought the monitor and they were dead wrong. Lorex recording quality and monitor display are entirely different settings. The motion detection default (80) is not very quick or sensitive, but if you increase it to 100 then it works better but the LED warning light attracts bugs that keep the system on "alarm and alert" as they swarm around the LED. An 8+ figure password is mandatory to use the DVR and if you let the DVR idle for 5 minutes you must re-enter the password. You do not have the option to eliminate the password. This is very annoying. 2) Lorex Technical Support: Firstly, there are two contradictory quick set-up guides that led me to make an incomplete connection. There is no manual. You must call and request a manual and it takes several weeks to arrive. The on-line manual cannot be downloaded or read in one piece; it displays about a third of a page at a time or else by searchable subject matter and as a beginner you don’t know what to search for. When you do search, you often find that the visual display of the controls does not match the visual display of your actual model and so the instructions cannot be followed. Sometimes you can work around this and sometimes not, and then you are stuck. The organization of the technical support is medieval. There are three tiers of technical support. These people are located throughout the world where wages are low and phone quality is often iffy. They handle multiple callers and often make you wait 20, 30 or 60+ minutes. One level 2 tech disconnected me after I had waited over an hour. Two day ago I was on the phone over 5½ hours just to get a Level 2 tech to schedule a “call-back” from a level 3 tech to program “snapshot” because the manual instructions do not work and he could not figure it out either. Lorex wants me glued to my phone near the system for two hours today and tomorrow for that call-back and I was told that if they did not call me back that I should call Lorex immediately and ask for a level 2 Tech. Your time means nothing to Lorex. Most of the Lorex information systems are not connected to each other and the Tech 1 people know nothing. I had a stiff BNC connector that I could not remove and I asked whether these should be removable by hand and the Tech said I should take the DVR to an electrical technician! Each time you call you start from scratch and when you are transferred you must provide all the information again: Model #, Device ID, your name, email, phone number, etc. And best, they don’t know where the Device ID is to be found and it is not on the box and not on the bottom of the DVR as they say. Occasionally you get a transfer where all this is not required. Each problem is assigned its own ticket # and you can be given ticket #, transferred to a Tech 2 who cannot find your ticket # because it is not yet in the system. My experience with Lorex is the most demeaning treatment of my time that I have suffered.

Impressed with 4k, needs some tweaks

    Posted .

This system is impressive, I finally have it setup and running the way I want it to run and I really like this system. Resolution is great! I compared this to a 1080p security camera i have at my home and this is substantially better. Setup was smooth, but I really wish the cables were longer, especially considering this is a wired system, and the cables are literally your lifeline! I think they should come with 100 ft cables off the bat, instead I'm faced with the option of buying longer cables... not thrilled about that. Software was simple to navigate and setup. Cameras were installed pretty seamlessly with mounting hardware and had no other issues (except the cord length). Only other improvement was getting the resolution right, after setup, the picture wasn't as clear as I expected it to be, it was defaulted to record in 1080p, but once I switched it over to 4k, the picture became much more clear.

Purchased on deal of the day. Good clear picture but probably need 4k monitor for crisper zoom viewing. A little cumbersome getting through all the feature setups, but managed by staying at it with some trial and error. Would be nice if this came with a audio recording camera but that apparently is a separate purchase and alarm siren a little weak but still could be an effective deterrent. Overall satisfied with the purchase.

I am able to get tag numbers with these cameras and was even able to catch a thief. Wahoo! This system only has a 2TB hard drive so at a week it writes over it's self. I suggest a little more storage if you set your cameras to 4K. I do love the app and the ability to see instantly what set off motion. The app will send push notifications to your phone. One drawback is I have had to replace 2 cameras in 7 months due to water somehow getting inside. I purchased my original system in Nov 2019. Lorex's tech support however is stinky but Best Buy's is great. If you purchase the warranty through Best Buy, I definitely suggest it, each time you have a replacement, leaky camera, you have to purchase the warranty over again. Overall I really like this system and its fairly affordable.

Had some recent prowlers so picked up this system. The cameras have great range. They don't move or anything, but I don't need them to. The install was pretty easy, just needed to run the cables exterior and mount the cameras. The control unit is quieter than I expected. There aren't a bunch of good instructions or anything, so doing things like setting up the areas of the camera view you want to have alarm audibly took some trial and error, but it worked. I still haven't figured out how to get it on my cell, but don't really need that since you can hear the alarm clearly throughout the house (and outside!). After messing with little details for a few days, I have it setup pretty well. I figured out how to get to the latest alarms and watch that video to see what set it off. That helped me understand that wind in the branches can do it, bugs that fly close to the camera, even steam coming up from the dryer vent when there is no breeze. I really like that there is night vision. Not a light that shines out there, but true night vision. It's like it's day out when it's pitch black. Awesome! One thing I hope they develop is longer cables so I can get my last camera on a hard to reach corner. I need longer than the 100' exterior cable they offer. Interior goes farther. I recommend this item.

    Fantastic video quality, tricky operation.

    Posted .

I’ve had this for about a week, but weather prohibited hooking it up until last Sunday. Now that it’s been up and going for a few days, I can share some thoughts. First off, yes, I’m totally paranoid. I had an Arlo system watching my front and back doors for two years, but I was worried about my car and was upset with the limited recordings of the Arlo unless you paid money. This system has great coverage, and the video feed is crystal clear. Night vision is pretty clean too. Supposedly has color nightvision but for some reason I only get the typical green scale. Motion capture works well, although someone or something can be halfway across the yard before it notifies you. It did video a skunk in my garden at 3am. Downside is setting it all up. Arlo was basically plug and play. Lorex has a lengthy walk through and their app isn’t as consumer friendly as I’d like. If you used a professional security camera, this will be easy, but for first-timers the settings can be a tad overwhelming. The dvr is a huge improvement over past units. It doesn’t look like a recorder. It looks like a surge protector/backup box or a cable box. It’ll take criminals a few minutes to figure out. Wish it was smaller, then it would easily hide among streaming boxes. Took my wife and I around 4 hours to install total, but well worth it for the peace of mind that comes with knowing who in my neighborhood is skulking around my house.

The picture quality is just amazing. The 4K image clarity is extremely clear. I can read a license plate from 40 plus feet away from the camera. I can also zoom in for high resolution images. I have the deterrent light turned on to strobe when motion is detected at my Front Door. Set up is not difficult, the only thing necessary is patience with running and hiding the BNC cables. It took me probably 1 hour to set up, run wire and mount each camera. (Around 8 hours total) The hardest part was getting the wires from inside to outside. I went to Lowes and bought a 3/4 inch masonry drill bit, since I have a brick house and drilled a hole from outside in, then used a clothes hanger and attached the BNC cable to the hanger with duct tape and snaked it through the hole. The only thing I do not like is the Active Deterrent Alarm. It's not loud enough to warrant using. The Strobe light Deterrent is great, especially in the dark. I am truly satisfied with my purchase which was around $800.00. I was going to buy a much cheaper camera system from Sam's Club that was only HD image quality, not 4K quality. I did not buy it mainly because only 1 person could watch the playback remotely and with this 4K system, 3 user's can watch the playback remotely at the same time.

Overall we're happy with this system. In order to realize the night vision quality Lorex advertises, your lighting conditions must be perfect. Lorex's user manuals are online only, difficult to navigate, and generally not very useful. Plan on spending a lot of time Googling how to tweak settings and improve performance.

Everything was nicely organized in the package, easy to open up, install and get running. The image comes out clear and going to playback is easy. You can watch it all or choose only when there's movement lots of memory space! The cords are all very long easy to reach anywhere in my condo. Very happy with this system. I did think it recorded sound though and it actually does not unless on its own, you have to but separate mic's for the cameras for that

We installed these at our apartment building. They work great, Night vision is very clear. Distance is also very clear. I can even zoom in. We are able to review the feed and have caught multiple thieves. It was well worth the money. I love that I can view the camera and footage from 2000 miles away on my smartphone 24-7.

I've been trying to contact Lorex Technology for almost one month with regards to the color night vision not working properly. Some nights one or two cameras show in color but most nights none at all. I am now trying to contact Best Buy to assist with this matter since I purchased the product from them. I've also tried to contact Lorex to share the device with my husband so that he may have access to the camera system on his phone as well. I have yet to receive a response and the only method is to complete an online contact form from their website. This item was purchased for it's intended use and listed features. The product is great and the HD resolution is awesome. I am giving 3 stars for the non response of Lorex and the malfunction of features that made me want to purchase this system initially.

Not The Worst, Not The Best

    Posted .

The Lorex - 8-Channel, 4-Camera Indoor/Outdoor Wired 4K UHD 2TB DVR Surveillance System - White is a great camera system but with older technology. This system is an ok system for this price point, adding a 2TB DVR, remote access, four 4K cameras in one package. Documentation is very thorough and easy to read and follow. The 2TB DVR goes through a self setup of the operating system upon power up for the 1st time. There are some basic questions as setup goes. The UI is fairly easy to use with a lot of options as far as recording, viewable cameras and position. It runs quietly as well. At 1st glance the DVR software may seem a bit confusing, especially if you haven’t used a security system. Documentation is detailed and will explain it well. Cameras are of very good build quality, solid and sturdy. Easy to mount and can be done with little effort and with one person. They are also weatherproof. Cameras can be mounted on either ceiling or wall. Image quality is also very good, as it does capture 4K video. Once all the cameras are connected to the DVR, they take a few seconds to initialize and show up on the screen. Quality on screen is great as well. Connecting the camera(s) to the DVR use old BNC technology. This tech doesn’t transfer audio, it only transfers video. Not having an audio option to record outside interactions, or general surveillance is always needed but compared to other systems out on the market, they have the ability. The cabling system can be a bit confusing and the need to run power to each camera through this cable is a bit daunting. Using an Ethernet cable to connect each camera using POE would be ideal, not a BNC connector. The cable lengths are also very short, 60ft. For a 3000ft home, this would require purchasing longer cables, with some forward thought to DVR positioning in the home. Purchasing additional cables for this system could put it out of the price range of other systems that have adequate cable lengths or that use Ethernet or a wireless connection. This system could be ideal for a small/medium home or office setting, either inside or out. The main thing holding this system back is the cable length and BNC connection type. If the cameras were Ethernet based and cable lengths included were longer, this system would have a higher rating.

    Great video

    Posted .

This system comes with a 2TB DVR, four 4k cameras and all the cables and mounting kits you will need to get this up and running. I found the install to be easy. Now this will very house to house. If you can walk around in your attic it makes running the wires and hiding them a lot easier. I would plan on an hour to 3 hours depending on your house setup. Running the wires is the biggest part of this install. My DVR unit is in a closet of a bedroom in the center of the house. It's on the top shelf and I ran all the camera wires up though a hole in the ceiling to the attic and then drilled holes in the soffit on the exterior of the house where I wanted to mount them. The setup of the DVR went fast and easy with step by step on-screen instruction. You will need a monitor or TV to connect the DVR to. After you have your cameras installed where you want them and the DVR setup you will be pleased with the 4k video. Very clear video and play back. You can identify people, pets and cars easily day or night. Also has an app you can download to your smartphone and access the system. With this you can get push notifications for events. Like if there is movement at your front door if you have a camera there. You can also setup motion zones. So if your camera at the front door can also see the street your can block out that zone not to send you notifications every time a car passes but just when some one walks up to your door. Play back of the video is easy to navigate. I record continuously vs only when motion. But when looking over your past recording you can see when motion was detected and jump to that point in time. All in all this is a good system that you can add up to hour additional cameras too.

Great picture&deterrence features but wires galore

    Posted .

First not to brag, but having two homes and having set up the main house with a 1080P POE security system myself two years ago I was familiar with security placement and how to route wires. The POE security system installation was a breeze due to single cable for video and power to cameras coming straight off of the NVR box. Unfortunately I decided to go the route of this Lorex higher resolution security system but not POE but rather BNC cables and separate power for each camera. So while video run is a straight cable from camera to NVR box, power cable was another cable run to nearest power outlets for each camera. So I knew that going in but wow it does mean a lot, lot more effort and time. Once I mapped out locations of each camera and supplying power to each camera, thank god only 4 cameras need on the smaller faction house!

    Not bad at all...

    Posted .

I had some mixed feelings about this DVR surveillance system. Honestly, my expectations was very low. I always had big names DVRs. Some of them failed withing 1 year of use (they blame it on lighting storms). This :Lorex is easier to set-up. The DVR is kind of HUGE when compared with others and also heavier! The power supply is kind of more robust! Which is something good. Setting it up was very easy and straight forward. It took really no time and no support was required. I followed the steps! Out of the box, it is shipped with 4 cameras and 4 connecting cables. They are Coaxial video and DC power. They are not long enough for my application. I'll have to improvise... Installation is scheduled next week if weather allows. For now, I just connected the cameras and screen and let it run for a while to see how things will go. Phone app is not bad at all. Easy to use and very accurate notification delivery (sometimes annoying if not set properly). From the phone app you can control the camera's light and the siren. The cameras are already equipped with very powerful IR shooters that are really good for night videos! Turning the extra light on/off didn't add any remarkable improvement... Maybe it is more intended to let you know that you are being monitored. The siren is honestly useless... Very weak and very low noise! When comparing the cameras to other brands, they indeed feel cheap but when holding in hand, they are kind of sturdy! it is just like the company didn't invest much about the external look. 4K high quality image is indeed a bit different than average regular 1080 or 720 DVRs but you still have to do some adjustment for each camera (noise cancellation, colors, saturation... etc). The DVR OS is very responsive and not lagging like some others! some useful options are included! Easy to access and to configure as needed. DVR buzzer/beeper sound is low. I will maybe use the external audio output to increase the volume. I need it where the system will be installed. Later on, I need to check if they have a software that can be installed on computer to have some of the monitoring/control options... In summary, it is not a bad DVR system at all. Doing the job great! Only time will tell how long it will last monitoring! Another thing to check: Will the DVR work with some other type/brands cameras? I might be able to re-use some of the low video quality cameras I have from other systems... The same for how long a cable can be before losing signal! On one of my old DVRs I figured out the loss of signal was because of the voltage drop in the long wire. DC voltage can't go very long! So I bought one of these voltage regulators with input 5-11V and 12V regulated output. It works just fine... It might be a good problem solving! Another method I was thinking about is to get couple of these Coax to LAN interfaces... I do recommend this to a friend! I know it is not a big name product! But give it a chance!

Purchased this camera system as a Christmas gift. The initial hookup is very easy. We did have to buy extra 4k wire because what came with wasn't long enough. I wish additional wire could be bought at 25ft length cause that's all we needed. They only sell 100ft of the 4k wire. The camera picture is pretty good. I am still having issues viewing it from my phone. My BFs phone works but when we try to add me as an additional user it does not work. I'll need to contact lorex. I'd recommend hooking the cameras up where you have or can place spotlights on your house because the picture is way better having a light there then without.

The DVR and included cameras work very well, but it is a very limited system. When I tried to add to the system, it turns out that this specifc DVR has limited options for adding cameras. The Lorex website shows numerous options, but none are available. Prior to leaving a less than optimal review, I have tried to contact Lorex to see if other cameras would be available or are discontinued, but have had to send messages 4-5 times to get a reply, and then if I reply to the response I never get another reply. What it does, it does well, but limited options for expanding and you are basically on your own working out problems.

The quality of the picture is great. Although I only wish I could figure out how to get the mic to work. Also, the floodlight is kind of a joke as well as the alarm. I was expecting more from the alarm at least, not so much the floodlight since it was a small single LED.
