Easy Pan Tilt Zoom WiFi Camera at Great Price

The Lorex Pan/Tilt/Zoom WiFi Camera is an easy to install security solution at an excellent price point. For roughly the price of a video game, you get an indoor WiFi HD camera with night vision that can remotely pan, tilt, zoom, and offers motion sensing with person tracking. On top of that, it has a mini SD card slot for memory so you don’t need to pay any subscription fees to playback your own footage. There’s also a built-in mic/speaker in case you need to talk to someone near the camera. If you’ve been in the WiFi or security camera market for a while you’ve likely seen similar devices, but it feels just like yesterday that they were going for double the price. The beauty of this is that it makes adding a security camera system a realistic option for a ton of people. It all connects through the Lorex Home app, so you can start with just one camera and easily add more when the budget or need allows it. And because it connects through your WiFi network there’s no need to run wires, which makes moving cameras as simple as unplugging it from the outlet and plugging it into a new one (within WiFi range). However, while I highly recommend this camera, it’s definitely not perfect.
There’s about a full second delay in the video feedback, voice, and camera controls - even with a fast, low-latency connection. The delay is pretty common when it comes to wireless camera video feeds in general, so not a deal breaker, but the delay in the pan and tilt control makes it much more noticeable. I’d also like to see more viewing options as you can only use the camera through the Lorex Home app, which is only available for Android and iOS Apple operating systems. Thankfully, the app is pretty easy to use and there’s a filterable Events tab that lists every sound/movement/person notification for easy playback. I do wish there was a fast forward or rewind option, but the events timeline has pretty clear markings for reference. Another downside is that while there’s local mini SD storage, you’ll need to convert the file format to view them. This is actually pretty common with security cams, but I was hoping for an easy drag and drop mp4 option. On the other end of things, maybe the most surprising thing is how clear the night vision video is and how well the person tracking seems to work. I honestly wasn’t expecting those features to work well at this price point, but sometimes it’s good to be wrong. Good job Lorex!

The Lorex security camera is a great option for affordable Indoor home security camera that packs a lot of features:
whats in the box
- Lorex Security Camera
- Pre inserted 16 GB Micro SD card
- Micro USB to USB A cable
- USB power Adapter with 1 Amp output
- Universal mount bracket
- mount kit
- Quick start guide in English, Spanish, and french
Setup:
- I unpacked the camera, connected it to the power adapter, waited until the led light on the camera turned to solid green per the instructions, downloaded the Lorex home app, followed the instructions to add a new device, scanned the QR code, and the rest was automatic and took less than a minute. once installation was complete I went to Lorex home app and it started a quick tutorial to show me how to control the camera from the app.
everything was seamless and all advertised features worked great and fast. the pan, tilt, and zoom options are snappy to respond and very easy to use through the Lorex home app, you also have to options to record SD, and HD. I found the SD acceptable and it saves space on the Micro SD card which I plan to replace with the max the Camera can support which is 256 GB.
the camera has a 2 way microphone option and it streams sound as well when you open the app.
the night vision is very acceptable and does what it should flawlessly.
The video quality is up to 1920 X 1080
The camera connects on 2.4 gh wireless network, or by plugging an Ethernet cable in its back (which is better for quality and streaming delay, and more secure).
Pros:
The camera is very easy to setup and very easy to use.
I was able to connect the camera to my google home app and to stream the camera feed to my google devices like Google nest screen, and my Google assistant enabled TV by simply asking Google assistant to stream my lorex feed to one of the connected devices.
You can take pictures from within the video incase you needed to.
there is a privacy mode where the camera lens will tilt and be covered inside the casing and the microphone will stop recording. you can reach it by simply opening the app and press the privacy mode button to enable or disable it.
the price is right!
the field of view is an absured 135 degrees which provides an ultra wide view
the Camera is very fast and responsive.
you have your own storage and there is no need for a monthly subscription. when the SD card is full the camera automatically start recording over the oldest recording on the SD card.
With the push notifications option, you can decide how many notifications the app sends to your phone (extremely handy when leaving the house for a weekend or a few days).
Cons:
there is really nothing much here, but it would've been great if:
1- the camera had a follow option where it would follow movement on its own when a mode that allows it is enabled (again when travelling or out of the house)
2- I wish the USB cable was a USB instead of a Micro USB cable (but this literally have no effect on anything since the camera will be connected and left in one place for the most part).

The Lorex – Indoor, Pan – Tilt – Zoom is impressive.
Having fiddled around with a number of different security cameras, I was eager to try out what Lorex had to offer – not having any experience with their products. The Indoor, Pan – Tilt – Zoom Security Camera far exceeded my expectations.
From the moment I opened the packaging, I could tell this was a solid product. It feels well-constructed in the hands and doesn’t feel at all cheap.
Set up was quick and smooth. I immediately replaced the provided microSD card with a Sandisk 400 GB, Class 10 flash chip. The instructions gave the impression that the internal memory controller was limited to 256 GB but I can attest to the fact the camera recognized and formatted the full available capacity of my microSD … coming in just over 377 GB. Thumbs up!
This camera requires the use of a mobile app and I am always a bit apprehensive going into product demo’s where apps are the glue that makes everything Go. In this case I was shocked & quite impressed. The setup guides you through the entire process simply & with ease, automatically directing the customer to point their mobile device to the QR code located on the bottom of the unit. The camera was recognized quickly. Setting up the Lorex account and adding WiFi credentials was also quick & painless.
Once the camera was operational and I was swiping through the app I noticed how almost everything seems logical, organized and seemingly ‘in the right’ place. This app is much better than what I’ve experienced from other competing products… so kudos to the app designers at Lorex.
The wealth of settings, from an easily controlled privacy mode to the settings for People detection and motion tracking, to setting up scheduled recordings – all made sense to me straight away. You can enable audio recording as well as use this device for two-way communication. Wasn’t expecting that feature. Very cool. You can also do still photo grabs with ease. I really can’t think of any additional features I’d want in a single, standalone security camera at this price point.
The Lorex – Indoor, Pan – Tilt – Zoom Security camera has one of the best HD images I’ve seen on my Samsung S10. The on-the-fly zoom is responsive and only loses a lot of image quality on extreme zoom ins... but still good @ this price point.
I do have some complaints and concerns but hopefully future firmware updates will improve these ‘performance based’ aspects of the The Lorex – Indoor, Pan – Tilt – Zoom Security camera.
I did notice lag and slowness to the overall motion tracking experience. I would have thought the AI stuff built into this security camera would have been crisper & more reactive. More importantly, if you use the scroll wheel (think original iPod…) function built into the app, the pan & tilt is even slower to respond. I don’t see using these aspects of the camera once it is properly placed, but I am still left with the impression that these controls – over a localized home network – could be more responsive. In any event, these sluggishness aspects weren’t enough on their own merits to ding the review a Star. What did (does) make me penalize my review is that along the way, and for some unknown reason, the camera stopped detecting movement (motion) and/or recognizing people thereby, not triggering a detection notification and not tracking anything. I tried disabling and enabling motion tracking to no avail. It took a complete resetting of the device and adding it back into my Lorex (app) account to get it to work again. I only noticed this once in the 5-day time span I had to review this camera. Hopefully this was just a software/firmware glitch that will be improved upon in future software updates.
All-in-all I am very impressed with The Lorex – Indoor, Pan – Tilt – Zoom Security Camera and truly believe it will fulfill the needs of a vast number of customers. The non-cloud/local (expandable) storage platform is great. The app overall is well thought out and well designed as a result. The depth of customization is clearly superior to many other products in the price segment and the build quality is solid.
Pros:
Expandable, local only storage.
Well-engineered mobile app.
Outstanding HD and better than usual night vision clarity.
Cons:
The ethernet port is for ‘service only’ which I think is kind of a detriment.
The tracking and app control performance can be sluggish at times but I think that is an area that will be improved upon with future software updates.
More and more companies going the route of diminutive 'quick setup' guides in-the-box. The Lorex web served 'full manual' is kind of clunky but there if you need it.

Simple easy pan & tilt indoor Full HD camera from Lorex. Easily accessed through the Lorex Home app to watch and communicate live or watch motion captures from the included 16GB micro SD card. You can also enable ‘General Record Storage’, under Device Settings>
Local Storage, to have continuous record, but this will fill the included SD card quickly. This could potentially overwrite recordings before you get to review them though. However, I do not see indication of this on the box or instructions, even the Q&A on their site says it is not possible, but it does connect with my Lorex NVR (N841A8) that is on the same network for all recording. So, I get continuous recording on my 2TB NVR while the motion detect recordings are saved both to the SD card and the NVR and get to view the camera through my computer using the Lorex Cloud application.
Quality of the image is good enough for identifying people and animals, but is a little pixelated. Audio recording is pretty good, but any background noises give a garbled sound to anything that is slightly distant. It easily picked up a phone conversation on speaker phone as walking around the house though.
A feature that is listed as (Beta) in the app is Smart Track, under Motion Detection, is nice but creepy at the same time. With this option the camera will try to keep any motion it detects centered from its initial position, the angle it was in when you enable the feature. After not seeing any motion in it’s new angle, it will return to the initial position. It says “follow a person”, but it followed my dogs around as they moved around as well. Which really helped show more detail of what the dogs were doing when not being watched. It was just strange seeing the camera move on its own. There is also a privacy feature that forces the camera below the visible range so you can see when you have it disabled.
My only real complaint is that the included USB power cable is only about 6 ft long. The camera can do 360 degree rotation, but only 180 degree tilt, so to get the most coverage it is best to have it ceiling or wall mounted. However, with such a short power cord it makes it difficult to mount without extension cords or happening to have a longer micro USB cable.
Overall, this is a great indoor WiFi security camera that is reasonably priced and easy to manage.

First impression:
My first impression of the Lorex W261AQ-Z is that it is a well built and solid camera. The packaging is good, and it comes with a quick start guide and a ceiling mount with hardware.
I have quite a bit of experience with IP cameras in network-based security systems. Out of all of the cameras, I have installed, the Lorex cameras are my favorite. They have the same features and settings that most good cameras have, but their image quality is excellent, their audio is above average, and they do better with extreme weather changes and high humidity than most of the others. So, when I got the chance to review this camera, I was excited to check out one of their consumer cameras.
App:
The app used with this camera is the Lorex Home app. It is cloud-based, so you don’t have to worry about configuring port-forwarding or bypassing firewalls to view your camera when you are away from home. It is especially nice for home users as most probably don’t have static IP addresses, so the app always connects with ease.
The layout of the app is minimalist without any clutter. It connects quickly, and allows panning, tilting, and zooming without too much lag. You can turn the microphone on or off, take snapshots, and record video all from the app.
Setup:
The setup on this camera was very simple. The first stage is to connect to the camera. I did the setup on WiFi. At one part of the install, it seems like the instructions might be wrong. They are not wrong; you need to connect to the camera to set it up before you can connect it to a network. The camera has its own WiFi, so if you follow the directions, it connects and once you connect it to your wireless network, the camera hands you back over to it.
The next step is to install the app. Once the app is installed, you open the app and click on the “+” to add the camera. You scan the UPC label on the bottom of the camera with the app’s built-in scanner and it installs the camera. That is all it takes; if you have several cameras, all you have to do is scan each camera and the app installs automatically for you.
Performance:
Like every Lorex camera I have worked with, the image quality on this camera is excellent. It does really well in low light and bright light and has no problem adjusting when panning through different light levels. This is a struggle with many consumer cameras.
Panning and tilting are easily accomplished with the pan/tilt control wheel on the app. Zooming is done using your fingers on the video screen itself, just like zooming with a smartphone or tablet. The lag with pan and tilt is minimal, and zooming is almost immediate. The SD setting is very good, and the HD setting is outstanding.
I included a screenshot from this camera. In it, the camera is less than 1 foot away from a small aquarium. It is in a dark room looking into the aquarium that has a mild LED light, and off to the right side is the kitchen with bright LED lighting. You can see how well this camera handles the different light levels, all without distortion or over-exposing the brighter areas.
Conclusion:
If you are looking for a really good network PTZ (pan/tilt/zoom) camera for the home, I highly recommend this camera. it is very well made, small enough to sit just about anywhere, is very easy to setup and use, and provides a very good image. I am planning on replacing my inside security cameras at home with this Lorex W261AQ-Z PTZ camera.

Coming from Arlo and Ring cameras, the bar is high and this Lorex surprisingly surprised me.
Pros:
• Fast live view under 3 seconds
• NO monthly fees
• Motion tracking
• Person notification
• Geofencing
• Adjustable zone
Cons:
• No scheduling
• On camera speaker is kind weak
Straight forward installation. Comes with ceiling or wall mounting hardware and a few simple instructions for you to get started. The camera was easy to pair with the app on your phone and within 10mins, you will have connectivity. The app is not the most intuitive to use but may improve with future app updates. I do wish that the app allowed scheduling so notifications can be muted during a specific time but it does have geofencing so it’s not all that bad. Caveat is that you have to allow Lorex to know your GPS location 24/7 for it to work but it does work. When I arrive at home, the app silences the motion alerts and when I leave, the push notifications will be pushed to my phone.
I have my camera in the garage and the lorex is just wide enough of a lens that I get a part of my 3rd stall garage too. The ability to pan within the app is a neat party trick but honestly, how often do you need to do that. I do like that you can have it track motion so if someone walks across the camera’s line of sight, the camera will automatically track and center the motion while recording. And it’s even smart enough to “recenter” where you positioned it after the motion has happened. The picture quality is outstanding and the best feature of all is how fast the live feed opens on your phone. Takes me less than 3 seconds to open app and see live video. Compare that to my Arlo and Ring doorbell at 15-20 seconds, this Lorex is the clear winner in speed and this matter when it comes to cameras. The camera also identifies people vs objects so I would get notifications on my phone that a person was detected.
I do highly recommend this camera because of the high-quality video it records with the ability to automatically center the camera on the object/person it is recording. It beats out my Arlo and Ring doorbell in all aspects besides App design. And most importantly, no monthly fees!

Bought in june, just opened now for new home. It seems user friendly at first plug in until the camera just turned red light (error). Unplugged, then plugged again same thing, red light. Tried to reset, nothing! As if reset button not working. This is within 2 hours of opening the box! Piece of crap and a waste of $$

I bought this camera to replace some older security cameras that I have. The camera is extremely easy to set up and get on-line. I have had issues in the past with other brands but this camera was simple to set up. The phone/tablet app allows you to do everything you need in managing the camera and so far its been very reliable. The connection time from the time I press the app on phone to the time I see video is very quick and the app is interactive so you can see a connection icon that shows the progress of the connection as its being established. The pan and tilt work great and the ability to zoom in is great. The video quality is very clear and the images are very distinct. Due to the wide angle of view I find myself having to zoom in more than I have in the past. This is a trade off that I think is worthwhile to get the extra wide view. The night vision is good and equivalent to other cameras I have used. Overall I think the app and ease of set up and management really make this camera one to get.

I returned two other similar cameras. This camera tracks motion and sound, and never goes offline. Images are great. Zoom function works well. Notifications can be easily changed. The Lorex app is easy to navigate. I really liked the WiFi signal tester which not all cameras have. The only thing I don't like, or maybe just haven't figured out, is the camera only records for thirty seconds once activated. I would buy this camera again.

Lots of features and good night vision… but….
First I always look at the price point and consider that when reviewing something. With that in mind, for the price, you get a lot of nice features and good night vision with this camera.
Best things about it are:
Tracking – the camera can be set to “follow” a moving object in its field of view. This could be person, dog, cat (sometimes)…. and actually kind of creepy when the camera moves on its own as the dog walks across the room.
Field of View – mounted in the corner of a room, there is nothing hidden from the camera as it can go wall to wall and pretty much floor to ceiling.
Night Vision – I was really surprised at how good an image was presented with little to no lights in the room. No question you could identify the face of someone walking through a dark room with this camera. No settings to mess with, when it gets dark the camera shows a greyscale image, when more light is available you get color.
Storage – SD card comes with the camera and if you need a larger card, easy to swap out, or buy a bundle of cards if you want to keep a record of activity. You will want to catch the card before it fills up and overwrites the oldest image or video files, but that’s pretty easy to tell from the app.
Mounting – a little quick-mount bracket comes if you want to mount on the wall or ceiling. The camera is surprisingly light, so it won’t require mounting it over a wall stud – as long as your drywall is pretty sturdy it should mount without having to hit a 2x4.
Wireless – this device connected with my wireless network in seconds. One of the easiest devices to get going I have had in a while. Needs to connect with the app on your phone to complete the process, so have your phone or tablet handy for setup.
Notifications on Motion or Sound – this one caught me off guard, as I set it up for “notifications” and really wasn’t expecting what happened next… was trying out the camera just setting on my office desk, and every time someone walked in or out of the room, and every time the dog (small chiweenie) walked in or out of the room, I would get a notification on my phone. Don’t get me started on the dog barking because if she cleared her throat too loudly, I would get a notification of “sound in the area.” That’s a nice feature but you probably don’t want to enable “notifications” until you are fixing to leave the house and if you have a dog or large cat that moves around a lot, or barks whenever a car goes by, maybe just don’t use that feature. I’m just sayin…
Kind of not OK, but maybe I’m being picky?
Well the fact that this camera will ONLY work on a phone app and cannot feed to a desktop/laptop app is kind of a problem with me. Personally, I would prefer to have camera access available on my desktop or laptop while away from the house at work to keep it in front of me if needed. Having to pull my phone out and check the app to see who set off the motion (or sound) detection trigger is a bit of a hassle for me. Other folks may thing this is the best feature of all – just be aware of it and if that’s OK with you, no problems. The camera WILL feed to some Google devices with small screens or large screen TV size if you have it, but I don’t have that so please catch some other reviews for using this with a smart home display or TV panel. It works from what I have read, so if you have one of those thingies by your bed and tell Google to show you a view of your carport when you hear something in the middle of the night, it should work just fine. Me, I would just let the pet cougar loose and tell it to “sic ‘em” and listen for the screams. If you don’t have a pet cougar, maybe this camera would be a good thing to have hooked up to your Google Home Thing Screen.
Kind of laggy on the response time – I’m really amazed at how fast a signal can go from my phone to a tower to a satellite and back to a tower and then to your phone – WOW it’s really really amazingly fast! With this camera, it seems to have a built-in lag of about 2 or 3 seconds no matter what. Because of the lag, I have the tendency to “oversteer” and don’t stop hitting the “move it” arrow in time to stop the camera where I want it to stop. It’s one of those “little bit – stop” “little bit – stop” until I get the camera where I want it. Not so smooth and again, for the price I almost feel like I’m being picky – but there you are.
OK there is no way around it – you will need to run a thin power cable to this camera. You can pull power from USB off a nearby TV (maybe) or use the power block to pull power off an outlet. Hotwiring into the house if out of my field, if you can do it, or want to have someone come in to do it – there’s your answer. I’m not so sure about getting a 30-foot-long micro-usb cable to run into the wall and pop out near an outlet and that’s just a total hassle to me. If you got it, good for you. For me, not so convenient.
Fish-eye lens – I’m used to cameras that give a non-distorted picture. Blame it on all the TEAMs and ZOOM meetings I’ve been having the past few months. Anyway, the fish-eye does give the extra field of view, and anything towards the center is pretty much clear appearance, but it kind of bugs me to have a curved image, especially when it is on a small phone screen. Be advised.
Indoor only – not a criticism as you can’t get waterproof and raccoon proof and all that in this price range, but please be sure you understand this is not going to work out if you put it out in the rain or where it can get condensation or frost in it. Be advised. Maybe under the eave of a house or porch “ceiling” – but still I would think if it got wet you would be looking at a black video feed more often than not.
Well there you have it – I have to say this camera was much more than I was expecting for the price, and really does some pretty neat things with good quality and really clear night-vision. It checks a lot of boxes, but I really have to say I would not be using this as my only “security system” device. It has a lot of clever and helpful uses, but protecting my house from a break-in would need a little more than a ceiling mounted spy camera.
Hope this helps and stay safe!

I give this camera very high marks on everything once you can get it fully configured to the Lorex Home App. Having said that, I have 4 of these Wifi camera's working. Two are this exact model, two others are fixed Wifi camera's. For some reason when adding additional camera's, the software will not connect it from their servers to the app on my phone. I have become somewhat of an expert on these, and know when it simply will not complete the process. Right at the end when it does the final step it fails. I have returned the last two. Calling tech support was futile as even their level 3 or whatever they called it, was no good. That person should actually find another job. If you get them connected, through the whole process, they work great. There is more to this story, however do not want to write a book. I wish they would allow advanced users a manual configuration access. I really would like to add more, however am tired of buying and returning. I hoped the last time that the firmware might have been upgraded in the off the shelf units and I could connect that last phase from "Lorex servers to my iPhone app".

This is a great camera. It has full HD resolution, night vision, pan, tilt and it will use pan and tilt to follow a person that is in the frame. It was a snap to set up with the free app, I was up and going in less than 10 minutes. It sends notifications to my phone when it detects motion and has a microphone and speaker which allows 2 way conversations.
The pan and tilt seem a bit slow to respond when controlling the camera in live view but reacts quickly when tracking motion. The night vision works to about 30 feet and has a great picture. The daytime images are bright and sharp. I have been unable to find a zoom control on the app but the recordings can magnified (with great detail) with the normal pinch to zoom gestures on my phone.
Unlike my existing security cameras this camera records all of the motion in the event. The recorded events begin a few moments before the camera actually detects motion. My current cameras take a few seconds to react resulting in me only seeing the delivery persons backside leaving the gate at times. I love this feature.
This camera is a cut above my existing cameras and doorbell. The picture quality, both day and night, is excellent. The price is quite reasonable compared to the cameras I currently have too.
