Navigation is accurate only after updating the map

Works well and accurate but only after spending about 2 hours updating the maps. The download takes about 1.5 hours (5 Mbps ATT DSL ). Don't get this unit if you don't know how to update the old maps because it is unsafe. Had to take 1 star off.

Unboxed my new Magellan - RoadMate 6230-LM 5 GPS and first thing you want to do is update your maps. Well if you have windows 10 you can't do that the device's widget for updating your new GPS is not compatible with windows 10 and tech support tells you to update it with someone else computer with a lower operating system because they don't believe they will be improving the update system to be compatible with windows 10 operating system. Everyone always ask me, "Why buy a GPS anyway?" During my travels around the US in my RV there are many times when I had no cellphone signal. GPS is satellites not cell towers if you loose the signal you are underground that is why.

    The Magellan is getting better

This is the first Magellan (I've had four) that actually knows the correct side of the street and when you've arrived at the right place. Also, the camera recording is great. I was disappointed there wasn't a carrying case included for the unit. Also, the mount bracket isn't so hot. I hope it'll last longer than I think it will. Really like the fact that I can enter s0 stops in a day. That's great.

I like the fact that you get a dash cam and a GPS in one. Not sure what the LEDs are for by the camera but it can't be for night as they do nothing for enhancing night time recordings. Not sure it's really needed as your headlights should give adequate illumination. I noticed a blue area on one side of the screen in darkness. Not sure what it is but if you get enough light it appears normal. Overall a good system for the $159 price I found it on sale for. In my opinion all GPS systems should have the dash cams built in.

It records and works well for reviewing video on the device. The GPS works great too, but I have not been able to download the videos to the computer. I was in a collision and had to record the video from the device with my phone. Other than, I like it and think its a great idea.

Very easy to setup, easy to view what is recorded. Very good camera view, widespread to see objects on either side, not just straight ahead. Size of screen is good, about the same size as a garmin. Having both the gps and camera all in one unit is awesome. Very easy to use the computer to add addresses to the unit. If you have more than one unit you can update both at the same time.

After figuring out where the SD card went, because there are 2 place that an SD card can go, the unit started working correctly. Nice big screen which I like. The bracket that the RoadMate hangs on is NOT ridged enough. The RoadMate vibrates when going down the road. Emailed Megellan about the bracket. Had to put something under to some the vibration. The camera was not taking very good video with it vibrating.

Overall it is quite good. You get surprising accurate directions; it knows where you are within a few hundred feet, and if you miss a turn, it is helpful getting you back on track. The internal camera is good, it's a simple click to turn it on. Make sure to add some additional memory, if you plan on using the camera much. Overall, very satisfied.

Got this recently primarily for the 'plug and play' dashcam loop recording and am still assessing the unit. I think the dashcam works well, but beware the dashcam timezone is bizarrely set to UK Greenwich Mean TIme. For a long time I couldn't figure out why the dashcam time didn't match the GPS time, and then I read it in the downloadable user manual that time/date is set to GMT, and there is no override function. For me time and date of recording is essential to the data, and the lack of accurate timestamp data is a big negative.

Magellan's tech support, is non-existent. It deserves a -100. The unit says it is Mac compatible, haven't got it to work yet. Don't bother calling, you"ll get some one in a foreign country, that can only give you articles off their system. The unit is nice and works well. No support.

    Hit or Miss Navigation

I've used different GPS units and particular two different Magellan Roadmate models. Like the other unit, the battery doesn't last long when main power source removed. More crucially during navigation the unit powered down (with power cord attached in cigarette lighter) and other times completely locked up (froze) during a key turn exit while travelling. This unit is hit or miss. Doesn't have my complete trust.

I purchased this a second gps unit for my work vehicle and at first I was impressed by all of the features, dash cam w/ backup cam add on, red light camera and speed camera alerts. It also gives options on how you would like to travel to location etc. The only problem I had with the unit was that it freezes sometimes which sucks when you're lost. I called customer service and did the update but it happened again. When it works, it's great. I honestly would give it 3.5 stars if I could but for a second unit it's not bad at all.

I picked up this up and love the dash cam as well. 2 weeks after purchase the dash cam is not working anymore. As for the gps, sometimes takes a while to load and if you stop and turn of the car it sometimes freezes and takes a while to return you to your trip.

Gps is ok, a little slow sometimes. Really needs to show your current speed. Dash cam feature is really nice and has great playback. For a gps and dashcam it's worth it.

There were several features that I have as a requirement mainly due to the capabilities now available due to technology advancements. One is that the map updates are free, which is what most GPS suppliers are now doing. Secondly the minimum sizing of the screen. And last that it has a camera to record everything in front of me. Magellan has met all these requirements and gone beyond as well! It has a reminder and if in the map screen it will show you what the speed limit is. Whether you're in the camera mode or map mode it will warn you if you go above the speed limit. And another great feature which I did not know was available! It will give you advance warning that you are coming up on a School Zone which is a superb feature to have! And lastly, when you thought nothing else could be squeezed in, it lets you know that you are coming up on an intersection that has a red light camera! It also comes with either a 4 Gig or 8 Gig mini flash card for the camera recordings. It will record in 5 minute increments. Once the memory is filled it starts over from the beginning of the memory recording over old recordings. What I chose to do is buy a 64 gig mini flash card so that I can hold more recordings. Within a week I had film of an abandoned car on fire. Capturing something you don't see everyday on the road and also being able to upload this to YouTube without any issues. They really packed this GPS full of features! The only downfall that I have found is I have a hard time hearing the speaker easily at times. It has an external jack to hook up an external speaker which I have done, and it works perfectly for me now.!! :)
