The Marshall Heston Sub 200 subwoofer is a great sounding audio component for video and music. Volume level, subwoofer crossover frequency and firmware updates are all handled through the Marshall smartphone app.
The Heston Sub 200 includes the subwoofer, US and Europlug power cables, and a quick start guide.
The subwoofer has AC mains power in, an RCA input jack, a rotary Level control and a Setup button. The Level control is free-wheeling with the level setting indicated by an illuminated ring surrounding the Level knob, which allows the level indication to work whether the volume level is changed with the knob or through the Marshall app. The subwoofer supports a wired or wireless connection to the soundbar.
I'm using the Sub 200 with a Marshall Heston 60 soundbar. After completing soundbar setup, the Marshall app guided me through setup for the Heston Sub 200, including a wireless Bluetooth connection between soundbar and subwoofer. The Marshall app automatically handles subwoofer firmware update as part of the setup process.
The soundbar and subwoofer now work with the TV over the HDMI ARC/eARC connection, and the input source, sound mode, volume level and more are controllable through the Marshall app. Audio output from my smartphone also works well over a Bluetooth connection. The only wired connection besides AC power is the HDMI cable from TV to soundbar.
I've had a small Marshall Bluetooth speaker for a little over a year and really like the way it sounds. This made me eager to try out the Heston Sub 200, and I haven't been in any way disappointed. The subwoofer packs a nice punch when watching action movies or listening to 808 bass, and has more than enough power for a medium sized room.
My expectations are low for smartphone apps that control devices like the subwoofer, but the Marshall app has been a very pleasant surprise. The app is stable and reliable on my Android phone, is nicely featured and is easy to use. It allows selection of the Marshall device that you want to control, eg. Heston 60 or Heston Sub 200, and provides full access to configuration and settings for the selected device. Device information including serial number, firmware revision and more is also available. The WiFi connection to the soundbar is fast and stable, with no perceptible delay when changing volume, EQ, and other settings through the app.
The Marshall Heston Sub 200 subwoofer looks and feels solid and well made. The black color scheme with gold Marshall script logo is great looking with a vintage amp vibe. The Marshall smartphone app is easy to use, stable and reliable, and provides easy access to subwoofer settings and controls. The audio quality is everything I was hoping for and more, approaching the quality of more expensive home theater systems. The subwoofer is easy to set up and use, works reliably, looks great and provides a wonderful audio experience whether watching video or listening to music.

The Heston Sub 200 adds strong, deep, bass to your sound system over a wired or wireless connection.
Design
It's about a 1x1x1 foot cube, wrapped with a black textured finish. The front has the beautiful golden Marshall logo and bar. I think it looks great, not too much Underneath you can see a single bass tube/hole. The front has the beautiful golden Marshall logo and bar. The back has a setup button and a dial that look so good it seems they shouldn't be hidden on the back. When you turn the dial, there's a light ring that shows you the level it's at (see picture). There's also an RCA jack to connect it to a SoundBar (RCA cable not included), or you can use Bluetooth to connect it to the Heston 60, which also has an RCA out. I'm using the wired connection since it should be lower latency than Bluetooth, though that may not matter for a sub.
Sound
The Heston Sub 200 produces some great bass. It's strong, solid, low end. I have it paired with a Heston 60 SoundBar, which it was made to work with, and it sounds great! The Sub has excellent bass, deep, room filling bass. From bass in music to thunder in video or explosions in video games, it adds life-like bass to the listening experience.
Features
Besides the volume control on the back, there are a few more features accessible in the Marshall app that I haven't seen in a Sub before. You can adjust "Phase Control". It has a setting of 0 degrees for placement of the sub near the SoundBar and 180 degrees for if it's farther from the SoundBar. There's also a crossover adjustment. It's set to 50 Hz by default (allowing frequencies from 50 Hz or lower to go to the Sub) but you can set it anywhere from 40 Hz to 120 Hz - adjusting what frequency range should go to the should go to the Sub. It also lets you set the brightness of the lights on the back, for the volume ring and the setup button. You will also want to install the Marshall app to update the firmware.
A Note
When I first setup the Heston Sub 200 and the Heston 60 SoundBar volume was calibrated differently than my previous SoundBar and sub, and worked a bit differently than my previous SoundBar and Sub. With the Heston speakers I've found I'm often listening with the volume around 50% to 70%. It was much lower on my previous SoundBar, I just never really used anything over 50%. I also found that the Heston SoundBar has better low end then my previous SoundBar, though the Heston Sub 200 produces the strong, deep, ambient bass. The Heston SoundBar then produces some of the bass that isn't as deep, with the Heston Sub filling in the strong, deep bass, like a Sub should. I'm very impressed with the bass it delivers. I strongly recommend pairing the Heston Sub 200 with a Heston Soundbar. All that to say, at first, I wondered if it worked right. After listening to more with it and getting used to the new system (SoundBar and Sub), I prefer it to my old one. They're made to work together and do so beautifully!
Summary
The Heston Sub 200 produces great bass, looks great in my living room, and is easy to setup and use. The extra adjustments it has are impressive to me, but it works great with out changing them! I think this is a must have if you have a Heston SoundBar and it could be a great Sub for any system that has an RCA out for a Sub.

I recently picked up the Marshall Heston 60 sound bar and wanted a little more boom from my music and movies. Fortunately, Marshall has a matching Subwoofer that pairs perfectly with the Heston 60, the Heston 200 wireless subwoofer. This subwoofer is designed around the classic Marshall amps and speakers from their professional stage equipment. The 200 is not offensive at all. With the pho leather wrap and classic grill cloth, this Sub is welcome in any environment. At 17 pounds and nearly a 12” cube it doesn’t take up much floor space. Connectivity is done through the app and uses a Bluetooth connection or an RCA cable to it’s RCA input. Though the Heston 200 can be connected to other systems using the RCA interface, it is primarily designed to work with the Heston line of Soundbars from Marshall.
Setup is very easy. Download the Marshall app from the Apple or Google stores. Then create a profile and select the plus sign to add the Heston 200 and follow the on-screen prompts. Once the sub is added, the app requires you to do an update. After the update is completed the Heston 200 will be mated to the Heston 60 sound bar. From there you can then do sound correction and set your crossover setting and phase for the sub. On the back of the Heston 200 there is a RCA input, volume knob and setup button.
Once you have connected, placed your subwoofer and run the sound correction, the fun begins. Whether it’s movies, TV or music, this sub delivers satisfying bass and is an excellent companion to the Heston 60 soundbar and I highly recommend it.

The Marshall Sub 200 is Marshall's primary sub that was released with the Heston 60/120 soundbars. The box includes the sub, power cable, European power cable, and paperwork. The sub comes with a manufacturer's 1-year warranty.
Disclaimer: I used a Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra (bluetooth BT), a Yamaha RX-V685 630W receiver (RCA-wired), and Marshall Heston 60 soundbar connection to test this subwoofer.
PROS:
-----------
* The sub has a premium outer build and look to it. Marshall's signature leather-like exterior look, gold accents, salt/pepper grill, and guitar amp-inspired design makes a strong visual statement. It's clearly different from other subwoofers.
* The volume knob on the back lights up the area around the knob which is pretty cool. The brightness of the light can be controlled in the Marshall app.
* The ability to connect a Marshall Heston 60 or Heston 120 soundbar using BT or via RCA cable.
* The ability to connect via RCA cable to a separate receiver that has a subwoofer output. It does not have to only be connected to a Marshall system.
* The Marshall app offers the ability to change between 0- and 180-degree phase, light intensity (rear knob light), sub volume, and subwoofer crossover levels.
* The Subwoofer Crossover level can still be changed via a 2nd BT device even if it's RCA-connected to another device besides a Marshall soundbar.
CONS:
-----------
* NO. POWER. Marshall claims 236W of RMS continuous power. 236W? This is where my disappointment starts. Instead of using TWO 5.25" drivers (and splitting power between the two?), Marshall should use one 6- or 8-inch driver made with much higher-quality components like a fiber-composite cone (or similar) instead of whatever they are using (paper/plastic?). I have old subs I connected to my PC 15 years ago that "sound" like they have more power than the Sub 200 but had around 40W RMS.
* Value = 0. Unless your only option is to BT to a connected Marshall soundbar that you must have, I would not purchase this subwoofer. It's worse than any sub I have ever used that claimed such power output - and I had power maxed out 100% of the time. I also used the app to move the crossover from the low end to the upper end around 90-100Hz. Though it did sound "better", it still wasn't close to what a sub having these specs should sound like.
=== Scenario 1 = I connected the Sub 200 to my Yamaha receiver, and even with the Sub 200 at 100% power, it was barely heard, even when only using a center channel. I had my other sub next to it and would turn one OFF and the other ON to listen to the difference, and it was night and day... not in favor of the Sub 200. The "other" sub (150W RMS) blew the Sub 200 out of the water.
=== Scenario 2 = I connected the "other" brand sub I have (150W RMS) to the Marshall Heston 60 soundbar I also have, and the sound was GREAT. The issue was not the Heston 60 soundbar as my "other" sub sounded phenomenal with it.
=== Scenario 3 = I wired the Sub 200 (236W RMS) to the Heston 60 soundbar and could barely hear it, much less vibrate the house. I had to FEEL the Sub 200 box with my hand to make sure it was actually working. If I can get away with another branded wired solution (since the Heston 60 and 120 have RCA SUB-out ports) with a ton more power and at a much lower price, why would I pay $600+ when I can get a much higher-quality sub and for less than 1/2 that price?
=== Scenario 4 = I took my Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra phone to another reputable-branded soundbar/sub combination but was a low-to-mid range product they produce (not a flagship system), and even that sound system blew the Marshall sub/Heston 60 to shame by leaps and bounds with regards to bass output.
* I tried to connect initially to the Marshall Heston 60 soundbar, and even though it was connected (after feeling the driver port on bottom), the app kept saying there was an error. It finally went away when I restarted the app (see picture for error).
OTHER OBSERVATIONS:
-----------
* TWO 5.25" subwoofer drivers shoot out left/right with a port on the bottom.
* Regarding the "cons" above, sound from the sub was the same whether wired or BT wireless to the Marshall Heston 60. Neither offered more bass than the other.
CONCLUSION:
=====================
I rarely give a bad review, but this one hurt me. I was EXTREMELY excited to try the new Marshall Sub 200, but it was a major letdown. Out of the box, the bass was barely noticeable, and even after adjusting the crossover to ~90–100 Hz, it still lacked the bass thump and impact expected at this price point. I did not feel anything close to 236W of power Marshall claims this subwoofer has. There are many wired subwoofers from reputable brands that offer far better quality and performance for much less (if a wired scenario is an option). This fell well short of the Marshall quality I’ve come to expect. Note that this review was only for the Marshall Sub 200 - the Marshall Heston 60, which I also have, worked and sounded fine.
Thank you for reviewing our products and sharing your thoughts! All types of feedback are appreciated; they are essential for us to collect as we continue improving our products and user experience.
Using two 5.25’’ drivers has its advantages; It limits the vibrations produced by the unit and enables the compact design. It’s great for smaller spaces and your neighbours will love you!
The subwoofer performs very well in our benchmark tests against our competitors in the same size range. It’s extremely competent for its size but a larger single-driver sub will naturally sound louder, regardless of price range. Our goal has been to create an acoustically balanced soundscape when combined with one of our soundbars. We want it to bridge the final gap in an already phenomenal bass response.

A must buy for the Heston soundbar line

I've owned a lot of sound bars over the years, and I believe I'm pretty picky when it comes to sound quality. I also play guitar and am no stranger to Marshall guitar amps, and I’ve even become familiar with their later entries into the Bluetooth speaker market (the Acton line of speakers is incredible). I recently decided to give the Marshall Heston 60 a trial in my living room, and opted to pair it to Marshall’s Sub 200 to round out it’s sound.
The Heston 60 is the little brother to the bigger Heston 120. While no slouch on it’s own, the Sub 200 pushes it to a whole new level. Your movie watching ,and especially music listening, will be elevated with some of the most balanced bass I’ve heard, with the added option to push it further with a dial on the back of the sub. And the classic Marshall black and gold styling looks great with any setup.
So when you first unpack your sub, you’ll need to download Marshall’s app for soundbars to pair it to your soundbar. Evidently this is a separate app from their Bluetooth speaker app… So you will have to download yet another app, and you can’t really avoid it because Marshall’s newest soundbars do not come with a remote, probably because HDMI-ARC is almost ubiquitous now that you really don’t need one. But regardless, the app is how you’ll adjust EQ and update the firmware on your sub and speaker, which you will need out of the box to make sure you’re getting the best sound quality Marshall offers.
All-in-all this is an amazing sounding subwoofer that rounds out the Heston line of soundbar’s sound profile. If you’re going to get a Heston soundbar, you should honestly be getting the sub to go with it. You can definitely get by without it, but to match the impact the Acton Bluetooth speakers provide on a bigger scale, the Sub 200 is a must.

Hello friends and welcome to my review of the new Marshall Heston Sub 200, This will be in tandem with my review of the Heston 60 soundbar that is the mate for this sub. First off the sub is packaged very well and thoughtfully. The packaging itself is made with the least plastic possible, Then Marshall thought ahead about how difficult it would be to open the sub alone. So they made the box open on the side and top at the same time so it's easy to remove from the box.
Secondly the sub looks really nice, as usual Marshall puts the looks of the speaker at high priority. It has a nice leather like material on the sides and real heavy duty screen cloth over the speakers, and nice brass looking accents around it . It is very tasteful and blends nicely with most folks furniture.
That brings me to the sound and the ability to place it where-ever you like in your space. The sound of this sub is even and blends well with the Heston 60 soundbar. However i don't think it will blend with other soundbars or other companies speakers. This is due to the fact that the sub looses a lot of punch and room shaking bass when it gets turned down. This is overly linear in my opinion, I think Marshall did it to make night listening at low volumes, keep the bass from vibrating the room too much. I understand the logic, but do not like it in practice. Because, you need to turn up the volume quit a bit before you get the room shaking bass you are after. So it will bring the bass , it just needs a lot of volume to do so. This is the only reason for the 4 stars. With that said, it is very versatile when it comes to room placement, It only needs an outlet to plug into, so you have the ability to place it most anywhere in your space if you don't want to look at it.
Do i recommend this sub? Yes... if you are going to pair it with the Marshall soundbars that are the mate to this sub.

Marshall's Heston 200 subwoofer is a compact, capable unit that reflects the Marshall signature look and sound in a fun, attractive way that stands out from the pack. Their gold-on-black aesthetic will draw compliments from your guitar aware friends! The unit arrive in solid, attractive packaging with accessories packed securely in separate compartments. The unit is compact, about 11 inches square, and lightweight but still projects adequate bass especially when paired with Marshall's new Heston 60 sound bar. You are not limited to using it with only Marshall's sound bars as the unit has an RCA input jack that allows you to use it in a variety of roles but it can also connect wirelessly if you incorporate it in an all-Marshall configuration.
Physical installation is very simple - just set the sub where you want it and plug in the mains!
After you get everything attached and the power plugged in you will need to load the Marshall app. Be aware that Marshall has different apps for its portable speakers/headphones and for the Heston products. Double check that you are downloading the appropriate application.
Initial blue tooth pairing timed out before the install process could complete. I had to cycle the power and re-initiate the pairing.
The app immediately checks for and downloads firmware if necessary. The firmware update process ran flawlessly and completed in less than 10 minutes.
If you are using this sub with a Marshall sound bar there is an easy to use room correction function included in the app. It is a relatively brief process and I tested it by moving the bar and sub to different spots in my room to see if I could detect any differences in the sound profile. The correction must be subtle because I couldn't detect any significant changes.
I find the sound quality to be quite good. Given its modest size and heft I wasn't sure what to expect but since the unit has a volume control I was able to get everything dialed in to taste. The Heston 60 or any compact sound system will definitely benefit from having this subwoofer.
It should go without saying but be sure to try different locations for the sub as placing it on different surfaces or distance from adjacent walls can give you a very different experience. The app provides adjustments for both phase and crossover so you can dial in the sound. The sub is compact and solid and is rated at 240 watts (2x120 Class D amps) and claims a a frequency range of 30 - 150Hz. If you choose to incorporate it with the Heston sound bars I think you will find it to be a very good timbre match to their speaker arrays.
Overall I enjoy the Marshall Heston 200 subwoofer. If you are considering either of the Heston sound bars I believe that this unit is a must have. But I believe that it is a worthy contender in the general compact subwoofer space and is definitely worth your consideration.

Overall, this subwoofer is a premium choice in the market positioning itself far above the standard, entry level subs. Marshall clearly pays a lot of attention to the experience of opening their product to let you know you are in for a treat. The fit and finish of what’s inside the package is everything it’s hyped up to be!
The visual and tactile aspect of it being an accessory/decoration for your home is impressive. There are quality materials and beautiful finishes all around. Somehow modern, but paying homage to their guitar amp design at the same time.
The fact that the sub communicates with the soundbar wirelessly is great. Otherwise, there is of course an option for an RCA cable. I did have a slight issue with the sub pairing at first and I had to disconnect and re-connect a few times before it actually worked. Another downside is that the app is required to pair the sub wirelessly to the soundbar since the products are sold separately. Nowadays, that is not a problem for most people buying technology like this, but I would not be able to buy this for my father who absolutely loves music, but struggles to use a smartphone.
My main critique is that the subwoofer isn’t as noticeable in this package as other ones I’ve used. There were times where I had to put my hand on the unit to make sure it was working, and it was on a ~5/10 setting. I’d expect the 10/10 setting to be the loud and proud house party-worthy vibe that Marshall wants to give, but that was just where I’d want it to be for listening to music normally or watching an action movie.
It seems like 85% of the sound comes from the matching soundbar, so the subwoofer really just fills in a small amount of missing bass. If someone does not care about the lowest frequencies, they might not even notice the subwoofer missing. But, if you are like me, you probably want the whole package from the beginning. I want the best, and it has to be a matching set, especially with the guitar amp décor. If I was buying this for my parents, I would potentially skip the sub just because I doubt they would care about it, and they wouldn’t be able to pair the devices.

The Marshall Heston Sub 200 Subwoofer is my second Marshall audio device. I am testing to accompany the first, the Marshall Heston 60 soundbar. The soundbar sounds fantastic but a sub sure is surely only going to make it better so I was excited to try it. I’m a sucker for nice packaging and Marshall doesn’t disappoint. A nice device should be protected and the packaging should highlight its quality. Here we get both. I even love the hinged side of the box which gives you easier access to remove the sub from the box. The sub isn’t huge at about 12 inches square and weighs in at about 17 pounds but at 236 watts I’m sure it will thump enough for my intended setup which is for a bedroom.
In the box you find the sub, a US power cable, an EU power cable, and paperwork including the quickstart guide. The guide directs you to use the Marshall app for setup. I of course already had the app for the soundbar so I knew what to expect. You simply hit add device with the app. It immediately detected the sub. You then just press and hold the setup button on the rear of the sub and it was connected quickly. Within the app I noticed a firmware update. This only takes a few minutes to update and I was up and running. I immediately tested with some film and music samples. The lower bass of the sub at 30Hz added depth to everything that you could also feel. This bedroom setup suddenly sounded more cinematic with the soundstage sounding substantially bigger. Film action sequences and music had a new kick with smooth bass and definitely not boomy.
The Heston Sub 200 completed the Heston 60 soundbar setup perfectly by elevating a basic bedroom TV into an immersive home theater experience. The Heston Sub 200 is the icing on the cake.

This is definitely a must to go with the Marshall Heston Soundbar for added bass. It helps, but settings need to be adjusted to get the most out of it, and it lacks the punch of competitors at its size.
First thing you'll need to do after installing is download the Marshall app. Make sure you choose the right one because I need one Marshall app for my Bluetooth speakers, and a different one for the Heston line of products. That bothered me but if this is your only Marshall speaker, just check the description for support of Heston. After updating the firmware, and connecting to the Heston, you'll want to do a few tweaks.
First, set the crossover to 120hz. Anything less and you won't get the best experience. Also, if you have it farther away from the soundbar, you'll want to change the phase control to 180. Leave it at 0 if it's not far from the tv. You can control the "volume" of the sub manually on the back of the unit or through the app. I set it all the way up.
Overall, it's definitely needed if you want some bass with the soundbar. But it's slightly disappointing in its output. I'd love to have a little more bass out of it. But the speaker itself looks cool so it's not just a black box in your living room. The Marshall design cues are classic.
