Customers are saying

Customers are delighted by the 24" Built-In Dishwasher's quiet operation and excellent cleaning performance. Many appreciate its ease of use and adjustable racks, which improve functionality. However, some users note that cycle times are longer than expected, and a few have experienced issues with the control panel and door latch. The fingerprint-resistant stainless steel finish is also a frequently praised feature.

    Best dishwasher on the market

If you are reading this review, then congratulations, you did your homework and are about to make a great decision! After researching dishwashers, I purchased the MayTag MDB8959SFH4 (white front version). When purchasing a new dishwasher, most consumers are concerned about cleaning ability, energy efficiency and noise levels. Most midrange and up dishwasher these days clean well IF you load them properly - that's YOUR responsibility. Do you really expect a dishwasher to clean dishes if you load them in a manner that blocks the water from getting to the surfaces? We use the plain dishwasher cleaning packets from Sam's and this dishwasher got a glass dish with baked on lasagna perfectly clean. Energy efficiency is way up across the board - according to the yellow EnergyGuide, the MDB8959SFH4 has an estimated YEARLY energy cost of $35 if you use normal mode (which includes heated dry!) based on 4 wash loads a week using an electric water heater. That's a measily 17 cents per load - making energy efficiency a non-issue for me. Have a gas water heater? - yearly energy cost drops to $24. Let's discuss noise levels. If you read the portion of Consumer Reports that details their methodology for rating noise, you learned that a group of panelist listens to the dishwasher through the entire cycle and provides their perceived noise rating. Hardly scientific, accurate or reliable. We have an open concept kitchen and living area. The MayTag MDB8959SFH4 is so quiet that I often have to look at the green light or hold my ear right beside it to hear if it's running...yet Consumer Reports rated it only "good" for noise. There are a few times you can actually hear it running, such as when the water first starts up, but that only lasts for a second. Noise is a non-issue with this model. Now let's discuss the features that actually matter and the reason you are probably reading reviews on this model to begin with. Unfortunately, most dishwasher manufacturers have stopped making models with food grinders and heater elements. In fact, MayTag was the only manufacturer I could find that still included these two most important features. Most manufacturers stopped including food grinders because it made the dishwasher noisier. As stated above, noise is not an issue for this model. Many manufacturers replaced the food grinder with a filter to catch larger food particles. This means you'll have to regularly remove and clean the nasty, wet food particles out of the filter. If you forget, to clean it, no worries the odors will remind you. If you are considering a model without a food grinder, read the owners manual (usually buried in the back because they prefer you not know this dirty little secret) to determine if it has a filter that needs cleaning. If you choose a model with a food grinder, then you never have to concern yourself with this issue. Most manufacturers stopped including heater elements because it uses more energy. As stated above, energy use is minimal even with the advantage of the heater. The heater does two important functions, it heats the water to a higher temperature which aids in cleaning and it helps to dry the dishes. No dishwasher is going to dry all plastic due to the deep grooves that hold water and the plastic doesn't heat up like metal utensils and dishes to evaporate the water. The heater does help though, and will certainly dry plastic better than a model that doesn't have a heater. This model is also designed, engineered and assembled in the U.S.A. I've had the MDB8959SFH4 for about 6 months now and highly recommend it!

We replaced our 25 year old Maytag dishwasher which was noisy, leaking and falling apart. This model is super quiet. The only time you hear a noise is when the chopper turns on for about two seconds. The upper rack can be pulled out effortlessly because it has a stainless steel roller guide with ball bearings. The tines in the racks are more numerous and closer together so you can load more dishes. Since there is a sprayer at the top, under the rack and in the bottom, it cleans the dishes well even if they are dirty. Runs with about a half an inch or less of water in it so it will help reduce my water usage. The cage that holds the silverware is stainless steel and strong enough that you can stand on it. It is also made in Findlay, OH so I'm supporting my fellow Americans. Installed it myself and it was very easy to install. Best of all, my wife is so happy with it that SHE wants to load it.

    Overall Good Dishwasher

Have had this dishwasher for about 3 months. It does a really good job of cleaning the dishes and silverware. About a month ago, it leaked some water out the side and onto the floor. We discovered that some plastic wrapping around the seal on the door had come loose, we removed it and has not leaked since then. After running the dishwasher, there is a mild smell for the first few times you use it, but after about 10 washes it disappears completely. The instructions recommend that you use special dish pac detergent and rinse to avoid spotting. This is more expensive and I have not found it to be necessary. Even using cheap dishwasher detergent, the dishes, glasses, and silverware came out spotless. The dishwasher does run on a normal cycle for 3 hours. However it does have a quick cycle which is 1 hour plus 1/2 hour to dry. The shorter cycle actually uses more energy than the long one. I use the short cycle when I have multiple loads to do. Overall very happy with dishwasher and love the hard food dispenser which means you don't always have to be cleaning a filter.

It is ok. Main issue is the control panel. The start button jams so often from the first few months and it has always been an issue

We just upgraded from a whirlpool dish washer. This Maytag machine is the real deal. quiet, cleans great, looks great. My installer made a mistake he hid the top display under the counter so now we really cannot see the status. But he installed well. So everything is working fine. No complaints.

    Shy away from this model

This is my 3rd dishwasher in 20 years and I am so unhappy. It does clean the dishes and is quiet. In the first 3 months I am waiting for the repairman for the 3rd time. The top rack left side arm broke, it leaked water from both front corners of the door, and now it won't fill with water correctly and run. I would love to send it back. Also do not like the racks, the top one has a large plastic box as a result of it being adjustable but glasses do not fit next to it. If you lower top rack the water arm then hits my plates in the bottom. The bottom rack does not accamodate cookware well at all. We have 4 people in our household and everyone HATES this dishwasher.

    Horrible Push Button Control Panel

Push buttons stick easily. Also, we had to replace pump after one year and we obsessively rinse dishes before using dishwasher. I highly recommend purchasing one without push buttons.

    Does Not Wash Well

So disappointed in the washing performance of this dishwasher. Does not live up to all the positive reviews. Had many dishwashers over the years. Never had one where so many items do not get cleaned and need to be hand washed or put thru a second dishwashing cycle. The dishes and silverware not coming out clean do not even have baked on, hard to remove food nor is the dishwasher jam packed. Just ordinary soiled dishes in lightly filled dishwasher. We use Cascade and rinse agent (also Cascade brand), so it's not due to using some brand x dishwasher detergent. Would not recommend.

I have had service on this dishwasher twice since I bought it! Appliances just aren't what they used to be. No longer serviced by Maytag. Serviced by whirlpool. Good thing I have extended warranty or I'd be looking at buying a new unit in less than 3 years, as service costs are often 75-80% of new ones.

this dishwasher leaks out the front after just six months of installation - junk - maytag knows this is a design issue with latch and seal - also the top rack drops and does not allow the water inlet to connect or the door to close until it is properly aligned - look to a different model
