    Great Gameplay But Incomplete Story

Metal Gear Solid V is the sixth game in the Metal Gear Solid franchise (excluding Portable Ops) and the eighth game in the Metal Gear saga. You play as Big Boss, known now as Punished "Venom" Snake in 1984, nine years after XOF destroyed the Mother Base for the mercenary group Militaires Sans Frontières. Your mission is to rebuild Mother Base, rebuild your mercenary group now known as Diamond Dogs, and take revenge. With you on your journey is Kaz Miller and Revolver Ocelot. Together, you will rebuild and take your revenge... if the story was totally completed and comprehensable. The Metal Gear saga has had an interesting story line which MGS1 and MGS3 had the best story to MGS2 where you have very little clue as to what is going on. It has been known to be a cinematic experience with hours of cutscense and interactive gameplay. Metal Gear Solid V changed this. Much like Peace Walker, missions are set up much like episodes. The 45 minute cinematics are gone and are replaced with short scenes. In my opinion, the cinematics helped drive the story along. It gave you information about the world and what is going on (MGS2 and MGS4 probably had too much information). In this game, the short episodes didn't make it feel connected. It felt disjointed and unnecessary. The later scenes tended to be better connected, but by then it was too late. One scene upon returning to Mother Base had Ocelot training soldiers to shoot. Be goes off on some dialogue on how to forget Hollywood and become real soldiers. That's great but it felt unnecessary and had no connection to anything. Most of the story elements take place in tape recordings which unlock as you go along. These recordings are essential to listen to in order to understand the story, who the main players are, and the affect you are having. It can be hard to want to listen to them when all you want to do is blow up a Soviet outpost. The story also felt like it relied on the other games to fill in the gaps. This is NOT a game for a first time Metal Gear player. You desperately need to understand the world this game is set it. Elements of the game make sense only when you recall experiences from the other games. For example, EVA or Big Mama mentioned in MGS4 that Big Boss's legend was mixed with truths, exaggerations, and lies. The ending of the game seems to support this idea, especially since Big Boss was in a coma for nine years. Things like that can make it hard to understand the story. The biggest sin of all is that it is not complete. News has circulated of the split between series creator Hideo Kojima and Konami. I do not know if Kojima decided to cut out sections or if Konami forced the game out too early (though it was believed that Kojima missed deadlines and was over budget), but a whole chapter of the game is missing. The ending of the game did not tie up any loose ends. It created more. Events happened in the game that had no resolution. The collector's edition has a bonus disc which has rendered cutscense, voice acted, and concepts for an episode 51, which while probably not the full idea behind the chapter would at least help resolve some plotholes. Despite its short comings, the gameplay is amazing. The best of any previous Metal Gear game. It is an open world set in Northern Afghanistan and Central Africa. You are given main story missions and side missions to complete. It is easy to get side tracked in finding more soldiers, materials, and destruction. It can feel repetitive at times, but to be honest, I really liked it. The game also has no true difficulty changes (some later missions are the same as earlier missions in extreme difficulty or added limitations). The enemies change their equipment based on your playing style though. This makes you adapt your play style. I would body shot a guy with darts so they started to wear body armor. So I shot them in the leg so soldiers got leg protection. Then I aimed at the head. Steel helmets came next along with face guards. Also, guards are smarter. Their not great but will call in for support and be in constant contact with CP if there is an issue. You have to play smart or be ready to see a Game Over screen. Finally, the graphics are fine. Current gen would be better than last gen, but the game is functional on a PS3. Just be ready for a lower frame rate. Overall, I enjoyed the game. I have played every Metal Gear Solid game. Their are some major story concerns along with an undeveloped section of game out there. I would recommend this game to Metal Gear fans or at least people familiar with the world. If you haven't played any Metal Gear game, go get Metal Gear Solid 1, play that, then pick up the other ones before looking at this game. I hope this review is helpful to those people who are interested. Overall ranking of Metal Gear Solid games from best to worst. My opinion. MGS1, MGS3, MGS:PW, MGSV, MGS4, MGS2

Excellent game for MGS newcomers/longtime fans

As a huge MGS fan, I actually missed the insanely long cutscenes from previous titles as well as the focus on the story. But the core gameplay and open world are so good, I can easily look past it. The "Freedom of Infiltration" Konami talked about when they announced the game is no joke. There is no limit to how you complete the levels. Side Ops missions are equally as fun as the main story missions, and the payoff for completing them is excellent. The FOB Online mode was honestly a waste, and I would play the game "offline" most of the time just to avoid the annoying messages that my base was being attacked, forcing me to stop whatever I was doing and go fight off the invasion. The graphics actually look excellent on PS3 when playing, but the cutscenes look a bit awkward since they were downgraded to the standard 30 FPS from the PS4's 60 FPS (this is to be expected). The story, while not emphasized as much like I mentioned earlier, is still excellent, but it will leave newcomers to the game pretty confused as it makes references to previous titles like MGS3, Peace Walker, and even some nods to MGS1. But since the game is not entirely stealth-based (although it is highly recommended), it is easy for newcomers to MGS to play through this game, although I would seriously recommend playing through the other games, or at the very least be very familiar with the story.

Probably one of the greatest Metal Gear Solid games I've ever played in my entire life. Even if you're new to the series, it's a great action/stealth game. The freedom to tackle any mission you want any way you want is the best part about the game. Go in guns blazing or without a trace. Seeing as it is an MGS game, fans will appreciate the throw backs to previous games, the compelling story, and riveting game play, all not without the occasional quirky MGS moments. This is my new addiction right now. 5/5

This game, while slightly different from previous metal gear games, is still very well made and a great experience. The open world-feel this game has is really well done and is very satisfying to play.

Love this series! Picture/Movie quality suffered on PS3.(Don't own PS4) Only reason I got it on PS3 and not PS4 is because I would literally have just gotten this game only and did not wanna waste money on a PS4 for that. But after playing this on PS3 its definitely a better idea to get it on the next gen console.

This game is crazy fun (spent so much time already just doing side missions instead of the actual campaign), but I'm sure there are plenty of reviews out there already telling you that. What I can say is I am playing the game on PS3, the older system, as I do not have any next-gen consoles. And the game plays just fine. The graphics are great, game runs great, sure there is some texture pop-in (bushes appear magically) but that is not an issue for me. I've seen youtube videos and do notice graphical difference but those things do not bother me. If PS3 is your only option have no worries because this game is still fantastic!

    MGS V Is Superb

MGS V is one of the best titles of the year. The game allows you to play it however you'd like, giving you multiple ways to complete missions and plenty of tasks to do to add to the replay value. If you play this game to completion it will take you over a hundred hours. Unfortunately though, despite the game being jam packed full of content the game's ending may leave you unsatisfied as apparently the final mission was cut from the game, so some story lines are unresolved and may stay that way. However, the solid gameplay makes up for the weak story.

The Metal Gear series has had multiple entries throughout the years, with many of good quality. This title is of no exception. The story, music, controls, and graphics are all excellent. The game is challenging, but in such a way to encourage you to learn how to get better. I strongly recommend this game, you likely won't regret getting it.

Metal Gear Solid V has polished, fluid gameplay, that is fun to play, but unfortunately the end of the game is a mess and it's obvious that a lot was cut out of the final game before it shipped. The second half of the game has little variety and repeating missions and the ending happens abruptly and without warning. The gameplay is strong enough to make up for a lot of its shortcomings, but it is still a heavily flawed game. I like it, but I would recommend picking it up discounted.

Kojima did well on this new game. The open world feel is like the AC franchise but better. This game will take awhile to finish (I'm about ten hours in and only at 5% completion even though I've been doing side ops). Good graphics and gameplay. Cut scenes are like a movie.

Very few negatives, and a whole lot of positives. Free roam and Metal Gear sounded strange to me, but eventually it becomes a very fun time sink. Story feels weaker than older games in the series, but there is loads of gameplay and that is king.
