Standalone - stop comparing to past MG series

First, stop comparing to previous Metal Gear series games. SPOILER ALERT - outside of opener, the core of game thus far is around survival and building, so go in with open mind. Kojima was not here and appreciative as I am of the series with him at the helm, this game is still standalone good. The single player experience is a graphically pleasing combo of 'State of Decay', '7 Days to Die' and 'How to Survive' with a little 'Don't Starve' flavor, and, wait for it, the stealth and sound effects of METAL GEARRRRR. Who knew? Your health is based upon food and water consumption, protection from creatures,...sounds like basic needs. In itself, I'm enjoying the different feeling to it. It is for thinking not rampant running around and I appreciate the challenge that it presents. Though I still need aluminum for building my cooking pot without conversion, GAME!!! Ahem, and I'm back. Collect materials, eat, drink, avoid enemies, survive. It borrows from the Metal Gear name but its not centered in that universe and there are no readily recognizable locations, at least so far, as you are in a separate dimension. I expected closer to Horde mode from 'Gears of War' series for PVE. It is still relatable to that and enjoyable tower defense. You and others are tasked with protecting an area from the enemies for a time limit/objective reached. Pace is accelerated but not uncomfortably so. Also, the multiplayer allows for quick ramp up of inventory to utilize in single player. I did not purchase any microtransactions and so cannot comment on how needed those are at this point in the game. Don't be a gamer who does a lemming i.e. follows along with poopooing a game. Also, it is clear now that I have put in hours on the game that the overwhelming reviews from major outlets did little more than the first 30 minutes (yes, the tutorial is a long one, but very helpful IMO). The game does not even showcase what it could be until toward the end of the tutorial. The access to teleporters greatly improves the gaming experience, which could be slow. But any open world where one is walking/running is slow. My long conclusion is that this is a game taken on its merits. So stop looking for Ocelot, Solid Snake, Big Boss (shows up during the opener though) and focus on SURVIVING. And for those who would review and complain about the slowness, I dare say that one would not survive in an unknown landscape with one bottle of clean water when its hot and no food and RUN AROUND. That is just foolishness! Stealth, forethought and continuation of the game. I encourage otherwise introverted people to play multiplayer Salvage missions. It is co-op (PVE not PVP) and the chance to get materials that you may not already have in the single player experience will also improve one's experience. Anyhoo, I am enjoying this game for its merits and open minded people who enjoy a challenge and progression may enjoy this game more than they think.

I really am amazed at some of the reviews I've seen on here. This has out-right been one of the worst games I ever tried in my life. I'm just glad I rented it first before buying. In total I played this game for most of my Saturday and Sunday, all in all about 10 hours. This is not a good zombie game, this is not a good open world game, heck, it's FOR SURE not a good Metal Gear game. In fact, it's dishonest to call it metal gear because the only thing Metal or Gear about this is that it uses the same engine and assets from MGS5. This was the perfect example of a company just ordering some low level devs to re-arrange the previous game and limit it into a bad zombie game. To those saying to stop comparing it to other metal gear games, sorry but I will. If Konami is going to have the audacity to slap the series name on this junk, it will be compared. I'm not even talking about story at this point, I'm talking about mechanics and polish. This game does not hold itself to the same standard as other Metal Gear games have in the past. So the game overall is just bad. Bland zombie combat, boring environment, poor design, no story. That ends my review of JUST the game. If you want to know just that so be it, it's a 1 star through and through. But I think it is important for consumers to know about business practices as well to also know not to support companies like Konami. To those unaware, the Metal Gear series has for years (back to the 90s) been a shining beacon of amazing game design and story. Each game has been heralded in it's time and still stands strong to this date. The creator of those games, Kojima, had always held the reigns tight on his products and made sure the utmost care and quality went into their creation. However, back in 2016, Konami abruptly decided to fire Kojima and take over his series for no reason. They have publicly announced that they no longer care for making games and instead want to shift their focus to Japanese Pachinko slot machine games. In my own opinion, they released this game to truly drive the series into the ground to close out and give reason to fire the rest of their game design developers, but that's just my theory and opinion. On top of that, they have the audacity to charge extra for usually-included game mechanics, such as extra save slots to have different characters in game. All in all, Konami is a business that no longer has the right to call itself a game business and deserves to fail for its practices. DO NOT SUPPORT THEM BY BUYING THIS

First and foremost, Metal Gear Survive is NOT a Metal Gear Solid game, in the sense that Metal Gear Rising is NOT a Metal Gear Solid game. I am having fun with it. I honestly had no interest until the second beta, played with a couple of friends, and had a good time. Best Buy made the purchase a bit easier (20% off and a $10 gift card) and honestly... It is mostly what I've been playing the past two weeks. The gameplay loop scratches the itch I was looking for after coming down from a high playing The Division. The survival mechanics are a bit difficult to combat at first, but it does indeed get easier as you progress. I'm maybe ten missions in at around 26 hours, with maybe 6 of those in co-op. One of the big factors that draws me back is The Dust. It is definitely tense and decisions seem to have heft when you're starting out (and carrying on. I still am worried when I transport into The Dust.) I feel like the sound design is restrained enough to really increase the sense of dread when sneaking around. Plus, having Ito Masahiro in the credits for creature design is a huge sell for me (Silent Hill is one of my favorite series, and I am very bitter about the decisions made around the series.) As to how that unfolds, I am unsure. I've only seen a few different enemy types, and something else. No, the game is not exceptional. Yes, I despise Konami for the choices they've made over the past two to three years. Would this be better without the Metal Gear name? It would help to alleviate the idea that this is truly a Metal Gear Solid game. You could even use the same plot points, I would anticipate, without the name. But I am having fun. It's not going to make it onto any "best-of" lists this year, and that is fine. Am I defending a perfectly mediocre title? I guess, but in the end, I'm finding myself enjoying it and I feel that there is such a stigma around this title that it was doomed from the moment it was announced.

I've had this game since launch and am, overall, pleased with it. I'm always finding things to accomplish even though the developers keep adding stuff to do and improving aspects of the game. The first two or three hours are pretty stressful because you're just now learning to play the game, but the impacts of starvation and thirst are always present. I kept thinking about how it is to play Fallout 3 or New Vegas on the harder difficulty levels where you can die of thirst or hunger...yet this game starts out that way with no changes to the difficulty. Luckily, only the first few hours are like that. Then you learn to clean your water and cook food. Survival after that is a lot easier. From that point it's all about building your presence in the game by rescuing survivors and building up your resources. The game, in ways, performs better than MGSV did. I was able to see certain improvements in the FOX Engine's implementation in this game compared to MGSV. In MGSV, the game had limitations imposed on it so that it would work on last generation consoles as well as on current generation consoles. MG:S has no such limitations and, with a keen eye and attention to detail, you can see those differences. I look forward to how this game will mature over time. It's only just now out and I'm already pleased. Now I need to see how it holds up in 6 months.

I only rated Metal Gear survival three stars for the simple fact that it could become a decent game with some updates to fix game play. Not to go into detail and list the endless cons of the game, I will only state the biggest gripe I have , as I play the devils advocate for konami. The survival game doesn't really start until after the story is completed and it unlocks classes, these classes should have been available at the start of the game. They could introduce "Heroes" like Boss, Solid Snake, Liquid, Ocelot,...etc to come help with bosses, or raids or just unlocks. The game has potential and I mean a lot of it but it is wasted and it is sad because this could have been a win in Konami's favor if they did this correctly. I know there are people who just don't like konami no matter the case, but if you can pick this up in $9.99 bin, do it. I hope Konami keeps at it and gets back on its feet and make the games we grew to love.

I have to admit, I went into this game with low expectations, but having played it I think it's pretty fun. If you like games where you collect items, build, and use those resources to level up then you'll like it! I'm a huge fan of the Metal Gear series, particularly MGSV and if you understand it's not meant to be a sequel and it's cut-scenes are nowhere near the perfection of Konjima's work, you'll enjoy it too! If you like MGSV and survival games, rent it and try it out before you buy. Don't give up on a game you may enjoy over a squabble that happened years ago...

A vast majority of reviewers went into this game already deciding to hate it. While the game seems to be the illegitimate child of don't starve and phantom dust; its no where near as bad as people make it out to be. No this isn't a "metal gear game", but Mario Kart isn't really a "Mario" game. Its a spin off, and people don't seem to want to accept this. The survival aspects of it are a bit annoying. Making the early game needlessly difficult while managing thirst and hunger; by the end game things get much easier. The progression loop of horde mode to gain new recipes to play hard hordes is reasonably satisfying. Unfortunately the annoying hunger and thirst mechanics persist even in online. I'd say its a fun buy for $20

The Metal Gear Solid franchise has been around for many years but this game does not hold up to its standards. Controllers are clunky and gameplay is very repetitive. I played the demo and had this pre-ordered but decided to cancel it due to how boring it was. If you also look on YouTube videos of this game you will see how bad this game turned out to be. The creator "Hideo Kojima" leaving Konami may have been a bad idea. If you are a die-hard fan then I would pick up this game up otherwise if you are getting into the series I recommend you picking up "Metal Gear Solid 5" as this is a "Masterpiece".

Any game carrying the Metal Gear name after Kojima's exist was bound to be scrutinized. But regardless of it's connection to the series, this is an awful survival game. From the start, your character will be fatigued, thirsty, and likely injured. Causing them to move painfully slow. and the screen to be filled with UI warnings as they crawl along an empty open word toward their next poorly designed tower defense section. I spent 20 hours believing I was missing a greater meta game. I was not. Boring. Avoid.

It's a game you have to try. I'm 6-7 hrs into it. And still can't decide if I like it. Survival horror, meets lost planet, meets Minecraft. Ends up with this. There are so many awesome things in this game. You find it. Think you have it. Then Die and have to remember where you were and go get it back. That's been my experience with this game. It's somewhat infuriating to die when you thought you had full health (if you play the game, that will make so much more sense) story wise it is not bad, go into it as a new franchise with no expectations

I am a huge Metal Gear fan and knowing that Kojima was not handling this one worried me. I have not been playing it too long but I can tell you I am very surprised. Building your own base like in MGSV. Creating weapons, armor, healing items. Hunting for food, gathering water. All in the Metal Gear World. It's unlike any survival game I ever played. If you are a fan of MG, or survival games, definitely pick this one up. 5 stars!

I must say, I have read many reviews and seen lots of reviewers crap on this game. MIcrotransactions are heavy in this game but in my opinion, they aren't necessary. However, paying an extra 10 dollars for a save slot is a little suspect. I am a member of gamers unlocked and received the title for 31.99 and got a $10 certificate for pre ordering. I believe it was worth it.

One of the worst games I've played in years. You have to constantly eat and drink to stay alive. YOU HAVE TO PAY for more then 1 save slot. WTH is that about? When going into multiplayer you are often paired up against enemies 15 levels higher then you and that's with people in your party around your level. Game doesn't auto save after major milestones.

If you ignore the whole Kojima/Konami business and pretend the metal gear is in the name, this is not a bad game. The gameplay is fun, the survival aspect is fun. The thirst/hunger gauges drop way too fast, so it can make the beginning of the game a bit difficult. The boss fights are pretty fun and the story isn’t too bad.

It's not the worst thing ever created, but that doesn't mean it's any good either. Overall this game was extremely boring with no interesting mechanics that will keep it from getting stale. The only good thing about this game is that it ran well for me. But that is it.

The game gets a lot of hate for being a post-Kojima Metal Gear Solid, but once you get passed the hurdle of the first hour or two, the game opens up and really starts getting fun. The co-op missions are really exciting too.
