    Surprisingly good horror shooter

We had not expected much from the game not really hearing any buzz about it and only seeing a few blurbs. Rented it and found it was actually quite good. It has a solid gritty post apocalyptic feel of living in the ruins. Weapons don't work well and there aren't shiny ones all over the place. People live a nightmare existence underground and fear the mutant things from the dark. The mist & smoke effects are the best I've ever seen in a game. Stunning. Some of the horror elements remind me of the The Thing and The Suffering. Combat is rough and tumble often being bitten by the nasty things you are fighting. Traps exist and are usually lethal resetting you a little. But it adds to the feeling of everything can and will kill you quickly if it can so be alert. Gas ask filters run out and your breathing becomes labored, visor fogs and things become difficult. For atmosphere its a nice turn of events being in Russia rather than the US for a setting. Crowds are also handled well. In most games NPCs jsut stand around and wait for you to interact doing nothing. The NPCs in the civilize areas are constantly talking to each other and or you with the volume changing as you draw near or depart. It adds to the feeling of too many people in too little space. And the game is full of weird hallucinations brought about by. well, you'll see. Overall if you just want a shoot 'em up with spiffy fancy weapons this isn't it. If you want a shooter that has atmosphere and a horror story to go with it then this is it.

Metro 2033 is a FPS action-adventure game of fast-paced combat, with strong elements of exploration, character development, and narrative. It's based on the same-titled sci-fi novel. The game is set in the subway systems under Moscow,in the aftermath of World War 3.Toxic atmosphere and mutant monsters have forced humans to live underground, where each subway station has come to serve as a sort of city-state.You play as Artyom, who was born before the apocalypse but has lived his whole life underground. The game leads you to gain new knowledge, gather new equipment, and grow stronger as you progess through the story.Guns and other weapons can be constructed and improved from spare parts you find in your travels, but bullets are also a valuable commodity, they serve as currency in the underground cities.Eventually, with the use of a gas mask, you may venture above ground to collect artifacts and equipment, but the dangers lie below, where the territorial and deadiest rivalries of human nature continue to drive people into deadly competition, even in the wake of the destruction of the human warfare. As you follow your mission to a far-distant subway station, you encounter constant challenges to your combat skills and equipment,as well as to your fundamental belief in the inherent good of the human race and your convictions for it's survival. The story in the game is not really strong in detail, but it keeps the game moving at a steady pace. The voice acting is ok, you don't speak Russian? it has subtitles to help you out,and it has dubed over english voices too.The game has some glitches like getting stuck on floors and fenses. You never really find that many FPS without multiplayer these days, but this one does.Graphics are pretty standard for this type of game, not the best but still pretty good, but character models could have been done a little better. The controls are pretty standard FPS,aim down sights or just blind fire. It's a pretty standard game with about 8 hours of gameplay, but not really much replay.Overall 7.0/10

    A Revolutionary Game!

This game thoroughly impressed me! At first I wasn't really sold. The gameplay looked a bit clunky and..well...not fun. But, once you get used to the controls, the game is ridiculously rewarding! This game has so many cool little things about it. For example, the destructable armor, the way everything takes damage, the stealth system, the realistic-ness (if that's a word) of the guns jamming and stuff. It's all just really cool. I usually do not like games that are really realistic, but this game was different. The graphics are phenominal, the story is epic, it is a definite buy! The only bad thing is, like I said, the controls are clunky and it takes a bit to get into... Also, no multiplayer... but honestly, I was looking for a single-player experience when I bought this game anyways.
