Why the thumb rest?

It latched up with blue tooth easily and latches on almost every time I open the computer to start a session. Sometimes I have to wait up to a full minute for it to connect. After using it for a few weeks I am wondering if the thumb rest is worth the extra bucks. The plastic rest seems to irritate my thumb's skin. Maybe I'll put some felt on it to soften the surface.
