Looks like a movie camera; acts like one too

In summary this is the best webcam I've ever used. The best feature is the image quality which has high resolution and looks natural (unlike many cams which are grainy and tend to wash out or over saturate color). Construction is high quality although I wish it had a lens cap for travel. It's not as big as one might think. The face is about the size of a U.S. quarter and it is about as long as a door key. The foot is flexible and allows you to point the camera in almost any direction or attach it to a flat monitor. Picture quality is outstanding even in low light. The field of view is wider than most cameras and the wide-screen format increases it even more. There are image controls that pop up in the system tray when you use the camera. There are not many controls here: zoom, pan, auto-color enhancements, brightness, and a flicker control. Auto-color works very well creating a natural look. Flicker control is useful if pointing it at a TV or monitor. Seems to have face-detection because there are a bunch of built-in motion tracking effects which are fun to play with (like one that puts a 3D hat on your head). Auto-focus is fast. It can focus on things as close as about 1 inch. I have not yet used the microphone so I cannot comment on that. I have used the camera with Netmeeting, MSN chat, and some proprietary collaboration software--works perfect for all. There is no way to manually focus the camera hence it may not work for Mac/Linux (or at least it may not focus) or any computer w/o the LifeCam driver--I have not tested that myself yet but other reviews had said as much.

    Unfixable XP installation Error !

This webcam is really meant for very high-end new computers with souped up capabilities that most people don't have, let alone the silver HD version of the same webcam that Windows can't even support yet. Whenever I tried to install the software I would get, "Installation cant continue" and an error that directs you to a Microsoft page. Not only did I follow exactly their support suggestions but I updated the BIOS, updated to service pack 3, re-installed .net framework and windows installer, uninstalled any old programs and freed up more than enough disk space. But it still wont get past 40% into installing! I found many forum posts of people with the same exact problem and not ONE had a workable solution. My computer met the minimum specifications and I followed all of Microsofts suggestions but to no avail. Very dissapointed in having software that no matter what will not install so you can not use your webcam or any of the effects. Brought this back to Best Buy the very next day. Please google error message 973297 and see for yourself how many people had this problem and there is not one working solution. The only thing I can think of was that Microsoft made these high-powered webcams that won't work on "old" computers (2007 hp pavillion) so that people will consider upgrading their computer and thus more money for Microsoft. Really research this error before dropping 60$ and your time and energy on something that you can't even use.

    Best Webcam I've Owned

My webcam fell off my monitor hard onto the desk and ceased to function so I was in the market for a new one. After some online research and based on the other 3 reviews (Thank you, gentlemen!), I chose the Microsoft LifeCam Cinema Webcam. I've had Logitech cams, Phillips cams, and older model MS cams and none of them compare to this one in image quality. In it's highest HD resolution, it's so good I have to change the lighting around me so I don't look so old! I did have some initial problems with my HP multimedia PC finding the cam after install, even though the hardware manager first said it was there. Then after a re-install and plugging the USB cable back in I got unkown errors and a Lifecam close message. I did a search online and there were several people having the same problem. I spent a few hours doing a system restore, thinking something had happened that may have stopped my other cam from working and finally solved the problem by updating the Direct X drivers to the latest release from Microsoft. As a part time songwriter/vocalist and video buff, I ineeded a cam that would work well for Youtube video and be clear enough to handle any digital editing of the final product. I was able to use third party music software to record with a high quality vocal mic, but the first time I forgot to change my sound input to the vocal mic and the Lifecam Cinema (with the mic volume set up about 3/4 of the way) made a very clear recording of my voice with me about 3-4 feet from it. After my initial frustration during install, I am glad I made this purchase and believe it was a good choice considering the quality and price.

    Love my Life-Cam

Bought this Life-Cam to use with Skype when travelling for work - thus enabling me to phone home from anywhere in the world and have a face-to-face with my family. This camera is excellent. I have read various complaints about installation and other things. I have installed (and used) it on 2 XP machines and one Win7 machine and works great on all of them. It is so good that we have bypassed the internal web-cam/microphone on our Win7 laptop and prefer to use the Life-Cam for all of our Skyping needs. I may have to buy another one for travelling now! Picture is good, microphone is good. There are also some features that allow you to distort/morph pictures and other fun things - but I haven't really used them, so no comment on their "quality". For a Skype camera, you will not be disappointed. I have recommended this camera to 4 family members and they all love it.

Just brought this camera yesterday because my new lap top didn't have one. I wasn't going to talk via web, but once i tried it loved it. I didn't want to pay additional $150 to upgrade my Tosiba so I figure for $60 why not buy this one. Plus too many complaints about the Tosiba's webcam. I have a desk top also that way I can transfer it to whatever computer i need it on. Let me tell you, Microsoft did very a good job. I could not believe how easy the set up was. The pictures is super clear. The size and mouting is wonderful. You can put it on your computer or just simple sit it up! Great! It tood me minutes to set up! I was on skpe in no time! I only had a problem with skpe recognizing the microphone, but once i realize i had to set the program to the webcam mic, it worked just perfect. I thought it was going to be bigger than what it was, but it's cute and small. Just the right size! I just can't say enough about this webcam, best buy ever. You can do so many things with it and eveything about it I love!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So i was a little skeptical when buying these based out some of these reviews and also some videos I had seen on youtube. I picked the cam up at the store, and was up and running in about 2 minutes once I got home. It was super easy to use and setup; It actually took me longer to get it out of the box and get everything untied than it was to setup. Video Quality is great, as is the sound. I did not notice any high pitch sounds on playback like some did, and having HD quality is perfect for my youtube videos. The only drawback is the file size, a typical 8 minute video is running about 600+megabytes in size. Granted I can compress this in Sony Vegas, but its not anything worth taking away from the overall product. Sine the cam is so small, I actually take it with me when I travel and use it with my laptop. Granted it's no Flip Mino, but it does do the job in terms of using a webcam.

    The Best Ever Webcam

Although a little pricey for some people, if it is used by those who use their WebCams a lot, you would not want to use any other camera - ever! Absolutely the best. The only two things with this camera that can be annoying, is that in certain few lighting situations the autofocus tends to try to keep focusing, but a couple of clicks can disable it temporarily or permanently and that problem is solved, and I wish the connection cable was a lot longer (4ft), but I suspect it is because they probably made as long as they could for fear of HD signal loss. Overall, for those who want to spend the money and even for those who feel it to be pricey, it is the best camera hands down that I have ever used and well worth the sacrifice.

    Nothing But Trouble

Purchased the camera 4/09/10 and returned it 4/30/10 after I troubled shooted for 3wks with no success. The software & install went without error but the camera's software won't launch. Strangely enough I could still use the camera in Skype but the picture quality was poor. Because I could not launch the software I never had access to the camera settings to adjust them and the default settings prevented me from accessing them through Skype. There are a ton of suggested fixes if you google them but I didn't have success with any of them and MS only offers updated drivers. I suggest you select a nother camera.

    Awesome Webcam

I researched webcams before deciding to purchase this one. I was looking for one with a good quality video and microphone to use on Skype to talk to family out of town. This far exceeds my expectations! It's more pricey than the standard cam but worth it... especially because I got this on sale at Best Buy for only $59! I then purchased 2-more for family members as gifts, because their's were cheaper versions (VX2000) so the quality of the video/voice I was receiving was very poor, and they were loving my quality. Also, this works great in low lighting.

    Great Little Cam

    Posted
    willowisp2

After not having my adult children home for Christmas, I decided it was time to stay in touch visually. I browsed the ads to see what was out there and the price range. I settled on the Microsoft LifeCam. This little camera works beautifully, is easy to install (especially for someone who isn't very computer savvy) and made it seem like the kids were practically sitting across the table from me. The video picture isn't as crisp and clear as I'm sure a way more expensive camera would be, but for the price it's good enough for me and lots of fun!

We just moved and plan on using this cam to keep in touch with family in other states. This cam seems to work best with "ooVoo". I am currently using this cam on an Acer Aspire T180, with Vista as my OS and 4 gigs of RAM. I have had Z-E-R-O problems with this product so far, I absolutely love this cam. The only thing that I honestly do not like is that it is not wireless. The cam reproduces colors extremely well for its relatively small size and price. The cam also has a descent picture when viewed at its highest resolution (1280 x 720).

Microsoft Lifecam Cinema, not what they say

    Posted
    NeveragainMSbuyer

Other than the resolution not being what is advertised (only160x120). The camera provides excellent image quality and rapid auto focus. In the camera settings section of the software there are the standard adjustments which, are NOT adjustable. The camera is NOT compatible with any messenger service other that MSN. The additional Microsoft software "Silverlight" requires a processor that has SSE language translation. I would say buy a topend Logitec, in the end you will likely be more satisfied than I am with my Microsoft Lifecam.

Great piece of hardware and gets the job done. I only wish it had better than 10 fps at its higher resolutions but I guess you can only push so much data through a USB cable. Worked great with Windows XP pro and 7 starter which is what I've used it on. I've used it with and without the special software that comes with it, and both works and has their pros and cons. Plug and play!

    Best webcam I've ever used

    Posted
    ReedC43

Everything about this webcam works as it should. The video quality is awesome and impressed me which is not very easy to do. With Windows 7 the microphone on this can be used for speech recognition too. The only thing about this that could be better is the adjustable mount. It doesn't grip very well and due to the lightness it can be pulled off very easy if anything that it is mounted on is moved or if the USB cable gets tugged on. Also the auto-focus still leaves a little to be desired. But it still does pretty well.

For those with a newer computer

I purchased this on sale - price was good. My computer met the minimum requirements, however, the software will not load. I get a message about server issues. I unplugged it and put it on my husband's new laptop and it worked great. I can use it for video on mine, but I don't have any of the extra's that I would get if my computer was newer. I could have purchased a less expensive one with the same features, since most of the features are unusable on my "older" laptop. I can not make a video review because of this.

I bought this about 10 months ago and it worked great up until about 4 months ago. the video looks great but the audio starts to skip and the pitch is lowered to the point that I sound like Darth Vader. I might just need to upgrade to the newer model. I used this camera mostly for product reviews and live webcasts with a little time lapse photography on the side and it worked great. overall it is a good webcam for about a year then it starts to act strange, of course it could just be my computer.

You get what you pay for. This web cam is capable of outputting great quality video, however if you planning on recording HD, you should be aware that it requires some high end hardware. My 3.6Ghz Pentium4 is not capable of processing video at higher video output settings, so I am only able to record at lower resolution. Other than that, everything works the way it supposed. Overall I am very satisfyed with the web cam. It's one of the best on the market right now.

    Exceeded Expectations

I did some research before buying this specific webcam. All reviews were good, and being new to webcam-ing I thought I would go with it. My expectations were far exceeded. I encountered no problems whatsoever - from installation through startup and first use. My distant family say the picture is crisp and clear, and the sound is like we are sitting in the same room. I plan on purchasing two more units for my other computers.

Installed this webcam on my PC with Windows Vista 32 bit. I am impressed, the wide angle legs, the clarity and autofocus is just amazing. Beautiful 720P HD picture....a great investment for $55 bucks. Used it with Skype (tested between laptop and pc) and i was totally blown away by the picture quality, even in low light conditions it's gives a bright picture. Very happy with this product.
