Not recommended: stability and installation issues

Office 2011 has a number of new, very useful features, and is a refinement over the previous edition of Office for Mac. The program is cleaner in appearance and much faster to load. There are two glaring issues, however, that would lead me to STRONGLY advise against purchase of the software at this time. First, there are widespread issues with product activation. Office 2011 comes with a new "activation PIN" that must be activated by the sale merchant (similar to how a giftcard will not work unless they scan it at the register). You are then required to enter the PIN on Microsoft's website, at which point (if all has gone well), you will receive your product ID (CD key) that you then use to install the software. In theory, the process should be painless---but Microsoft has been having issues nationwide with activation of the PIN (even if you pay for the software) and I had to deal with about a week's worth of hassles and e-mails/phone calls between Microsoft and my vendor before I could get my legitimately bought-and-paid-for software installable on my computer. Second, despite its flashiness and cosmetic improvements, this software is just not ready for prime-time in terms of stability. This is an essential point for anyone that works on important (or long) documents--you do not want to risk using this product, because it has not been adequately beta-tested or debugged, and the development team and Microsoft have not provided its customers the courtesy nor respect in ensuring data loss is minimized when using their software. The previous version of Office for Mac has been out for a while and has had hundreds if not thousands of megabytes worth of updates and patches over the years, which makes it relatively reliable to work on. Prior to purchasing Office 2011, you should be aware that there are significant stability issues with MS Excel that make even window-rendering painfully (and reproducibly) difficult (this is on a well-equipped Core i7 Macbook Pro)--where the screen stutters and ghosts when you try and resize documents, for example. MS Word has a glaring bug in it that causes it to, at times, abruptly quit, or worse, convert lengthy documents into asterisks without warning (or option for recovery). Microsoft has been notified of these issues but it is unclear whether or if they are working on solutions. I would recommend sticking with the previous iteration of MS Office, wait for at least 6-8 months prior to purchasing this, or use something alternatively that has an established track record of stability, ease-of-use, and features, such as Apple's iWork.

    Pricey Software, But Good Product

I've used Microsoft Office products for about 10 years; however, I made the switch from PC to Mac this past Christmas. I originally wanted to give Apple's iWork products a try, so I went to BB in search of it with no success so I purchased this. A week later I found iWork under the App Store, Duh! but oh well. After giving this a try, I would say it is almost exactly like the PC version. I don't have much of a hard time finding the things I need to develop my documents. This also has many templates to choose from such as resumes, calendars, menus, invitations, certificates, and much more. I usually turn to this if I want to create anything on paper. Anyone who is concerned if this will save in the same format as Windows, then no need to worry because it does. This the option to save as a Word Document, or specifically in Word 97-2004, Rich Text Format, Plain text, PDF, etc.. I usually save it in Word Document and send my papers to my teachers who have PCs. They put their grading comments all over them and send them back to me. The only problems I have with this is that it is really pricey and it has been useless a couple times. I have an online college course which requires Microsoft Office; however, it doesn't like using the Mac version. I had to install Windows on my Mac (using a virtual machine) and install Microsoft Office onto it. Luckily, my school lets me download it for a whole semester for free. I would recommend this to anyone who needs Office. I still may download iWork since it only costs $20 per app.

    DON'T WORRY ABOUT ACTIVATION/STABILITY!!!!!

    Posted

I purchased this product with confidence that it would work properly - regardless of what other reviews said on Amazon. People claim that activation doesn't work, and that the stability (meaning the program will quit unexpectedly) is completely not true. Activation took 3.5 seconds (timed) and it was ready to use. Hasn't quit once, and although most people probably don't care - incase you didn't notice with office 2008, many fonts that were on windows, like Calibri, were different on the mac. Also, Cambria was the same, but the bold/italic didn't work properly because it wasn't a registered font on the mac. Same with Calibri. Most people probably don't care - but to me, it's all the difference :) Ribbon interface is awesome. The similarities between windows office (which is usually better) and mac office is amazing. Also - I didn't think I'd like the full screen mode - I was wrong! Awesome :) Lastly - don't pay the extra $80.00 for outlook.... not worth it. Although it does beat Apple's mail program, mail works just fine. I admit, I was a bit worried when purchasing the suite because of reviews - but please, don't be! :)

    Better than Pages, Keynote, Etc.

I recently switched from windows to mac. I found pages and keynote to be difficult compared to what I was used to (Office for windows). I was running Office 2010 on windows (bootcamp) and switching back to mac os. I downloaded the trial version of Office for Mac on Microsoft's website and immediately knew this was the best software available. I find Office for Mac to be similar to pages in the template browser options (very professional) and similar to MS Word (for windows) in the general use and feel of basic operations. This software is different than Office 2010 (windows based). It is upgraded and a newer version (2011). If you like MS OFFICE and are having trouble adjusting to iWork, this is your best solution hands down. If you are a iWork fan (and frequent user), this product is still something to consider given the compatibility issues when you save as .docx in pages or .pptx in keynote. The only negative remark would be that MS Publisher is not available.

MS Office necessary, but not easy!

I bought Office for Mac so that I could have full compatibility with all the work and school needs in our household. MS Office is very good, like the functionality, but for some reason, everything I have that is from MS seems to include an extra degree of pain. Installation was a horrible experience! The product does not come with a Product Key, it comes with a PIN that you enter on the MS site, and they give you a Product Key... seems simple, but not so much. The site required a 27 character PIN, yet the one in the package was only 25 characters. I called the MS service line, and I received a message telling me to call back during business hours (hello - I have to work then!!). I went back to Best Buy and they were very helpful, letting me know I needed a check digit (two more characters) that was not mentioned anywhere on the package or on the PIN card in the package... aaaarrrrrggg! Now that it is working, all is fine, but MS doesn't seem to make anything easy in my life.

I ordered this product online along with my new MacBook Pro. I am extremely disappointed that the PIN # provided with my product cannot be activated correctly...therefore I am unable to get the Product Key i need to activate the software for use. After multiple phone calls between Best Buy and Microsoft over 24 hrs, I am sitting here STILL unable to use this software. Because the customer service never knows what they are doing, they finally sent me to the Geek Squad. The Geek Squad tells me I have to go to the store to get it activated. That to me is bad business. Do not sell me something online that you cannot activate!!!!!! Now I have the inconvenience of having to drive to the store and deal with more inadequate customer service to try to get this software activated or exchanged or returned all together. Fortunately I have a Best Buy in my town, but what if I didn't???? Bad, bad business Best Buy!!!! And please find representatives that KNOW what they are doing and can speak CLEARLY!!!!! I could hardly understand some of the associates you have on your customer service line. Lesson learned....never buy online with Best Buy!!!!!

    Incomplete Description

This is only 1 license for 1 Mac, and there is NO reference to this fact anywhere that I can find on the Best Buy site. The retail price of this ($119) is the price I paid previously for a 3pack, so I (wrongly) assumed this deal of the day was the same thing. In past versions, the Home & Student version was sold only in a pack which included licenses for 3 seats within the household. I purchased this under the assumption that it was the same as previous editions. Fortunately I realized this before breaking the seal on the shrinkwrap, so it should be returnable, or exchangable for a family pack. Thing is, the family pack description doesn't include a quantity either...how many is in the family pack? 1? 3? 5? 10? This important information needs to be added to the descriptions on this site.

This release give Mac users the ability to use Visual Basic again along with essentially the same functionality that's built into the Windows 2010 version of the product for the comparable sub-applications. The plus for Mac users is the consistent access to the Mac menu bar riding above the Microsoft Ribbon. This makes it easier to find any command you're looking for as Microsoft significantly rearranged the menu structure in 2010. Now you can go "either way" in accessing the capability of the applications. As long as the MS Office suite continues to be the industry standard, it's great to have this version available on the Mac platform. Things that could be added to make it more "Mac-like" would be to adopt the new Save functionality introduced in OS X 10.7. Also, you'll need to set up quite a few keyboard shortcuts that don't exist or align with the ones on the Windows platform (for those of us that go back and forth a lot).

Just needed Microsoft Word for Mac

I bought this product along with a MacBook Pro for my sister. She mainly uses it for video editing for school work/projects & a lot of web-surfing. However, having Microsoft Word in her Mac would allow her to open her unfinished word document to a windows-base PC if she has to, or vice-versa. The only complaints I have with the Mac version is that I couldn't find the other features that the windows version have (bibliography, citations, etc.), but then again I don't use it at all since I have windows. My other complaint is that, I have to wait two days to retrieve the product code from Microsoft (when I tried to activate the product that night, the web site said that "code was invalid, try activating at store") of course I gave it a benefit of a doubt, so I waited the following day, but it said the same thing again, then I waited some more ti'll it finally worked.

The newest version of Office is, like most versions, very reliable and deep in functionality. With more than two decades worth of refinement since the original products were created, Microsoft has created the very definition of the business-office suite of work products. Word is a word processor and pseudo page layout program, Excel is a spreadsheet, and so on. I prefer the Mac version to the current Windows version because the Mac version retains the old look (menus and pulldowns) versus big icons and tabs. You probably already know what you are buying when you get this product, but if you don't, it's not as user-friendly as Microsoft would like. That being said, it's okay because it's far better to have a set of programs with deep layered functionality instead of a user-friendly icon fest.

This product works great. Easy to install despite some of the reviews I read. I asked the clerk & 3 of them all said that the people having issues must have purchased the licence pack , which is a bit more complicated. I had the product installed & registered in about 10 minutes. As I said if you are used to the Office product then this is the way to go to alleviate learning the Apple iWord which I tried at the store but just couldn't get it. I'm sure it is a fine product and certainly cheaper but this was the best for us!!

So, this is the latest Office available for OS X. Overall, the product is great if you need MS Office. I tried some of the free stuff and while they got me by, it wasn't exactly Office and some of the formatting and such wouldn't transfer over. The one thing that's terrible is the installation. Because it didn't come with the code in the box, I had to go online, try to remember my Hotmail password that I haven't used in ages, I think I had to change it, register for something, then register again to get the code. Took forever. Over all, the performance on my 2008 MacBook Pro is great. It's somewhat easy to use, but not as easy as iWork stuff. But it's not as widely used. If you need to use Office stuff, get this. The price isn't that bad.

Before installing the binaries from the DVD, one must validate two long keys on microsoft.com. It didn't work, and I got a message to go back to the store. I did, they replaced the box, and the same story. I gave up and I got a return, delivered via gift certificate, as due to the complicated way the store has to generate the keys, there was no way to credit my Best Buy card. I downloaded instead Oracle's Open Office that works fine on Mac. It is a free software

My favorite part about the Mac version is that I don't have to relearn how to use this software - all the keys, buttons, and mouse-clicks do the same thing that they do on the PC version (aside from using the "command" button vs. the "alt" or "control" buttons). I do not like the overall design that looks "cheaper" than the PC version. The PC version is so polished, and this looks a bit amateur in comparison. Also, the Excel app in particular freezes a bit more, and is slower to open or save documents than the PC version. Overall, it is still far superior to me than any other office-type suite software on the market for Mac (sorry Apple!).

The software itself is great. The problem was that it could not be installed because it did not have the installation code included with it. I don't know if this was a Best Buy problem, or Microsoft problem, but we had it shipped to our home to avoid making a trip to the store. The Best Buy store could not give us the code over the phone, so we had to make a trip to the store anyway, which defeated the purpose of free shipping. I don't know that I will use the Best Buy Deal of the Day again because it ended up being more trouble than buying it at a closer store.

I used to have Parallels installed on my computer in order to have MS Office available. Was going to buy the Parallels upgrade and the MS Office upgrade (like $280.00 or something), when I realized I could simply buy Office for Mac 2011. It works perfectly, and of course, if you didn't know, the files are always cross-platform documents. That's right, create a word document on your PC and it can be opened on a Mac using the same application and vice-versa. That goes for Excel and PowerPoint as well. Also, lots of cool new features - Go ahead and read up on it.

as with other reviewers, i had difficulty getting it installed. you receive a pin number with the product which you enter online to get the product code. the problem is, the pin number lacks two numbers: "01". without the number, which you have no way of knowing you need. i returned to best buy and they gave me a new office product, but still unknowingly did not have the 01 code that was needed. on the second return trip, the geek squad guy figured it out. once the full code was entered, it worked fine.

For on-line teaching, most of the documents that come to me are formatted in .doc or .docx and it's absolutely necessary to have a microsoft office product that allows me to read, write, share, and give feedback in that familiar language. I really appreciate the fact that MICROSOFT Office Home and Student 2011 gives me a product for my Mac that was born out of the original Microsoft Office program. The software is intuitive and very easy to apply and, in this format, very affordable. It brings me joy to be able to use a piece of software that has positive benefits for both Mac and PC users.

Went and bought this product in a rush when my wife was doing work at home and had to meet a deadline. Took about 35 minutes to install and she was up and running and was able to get all her work done. She said has many more features than the older version of MS office she was used to using. I have briefly used for my work and am curious with all new features. A few days later I upgraded from SnowLeapord to Lion and MS Office still works fine on our iMac.

Office for Mac is a very good product and it brings some Windows familiarity to a Mac newbie like me. The price was right - until I wanted to add Outlook which requires upgrading the Home and Student version that I purchased to the Business (??) version. I wanted the functionality of Outlook instead of the somewhat lame e-mail app my local ISP provides. The best upgrade price I could find was $100 (Microsoft direct wanted twice that). So, what do you do? If you want it, you pay the price and I did.
