    Windows 8 compatibility?

    Posted

I ordered Microsoft Office Home & Student 2013 for my new Lenovo laptop with Windows 8. When I went to the BB Digital Library it says it's not available to download on this device and does not allow me to even attempt to download. When you click on See Requirements it says its good for Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7. I can download on Vista but not Win8? Really?? Thanks Best Buy...would have been nice if you put this in the description. So I call tech support, before I even tell them why I'm calling, the first thing they ask is if I bought Tech Support! It's a download, not rocket science! After sitting on hold for 20+ minutes I'm told there's no reason for it not to install and to bring it to a BB store but I'll probably be charged for them to install it. Funny but when I went to BB to look at laptops before I even told them what I was looking for they tried selling me a support package. How about selling me something compatible? I guess I should have been a little leery when the salesperson said he didn't know much about Windows 8 but had been "playing around with it" on the sales floor. In their defense, it is cheaper and more profitable to train your employees to push Tech Support rather than training them on the products you offer. BB, here's some advice...the first thing out of your employees' mouths should not be Tech Support. It should be 'How can I help you today?' and actually mean it.

    Typical MS with more hoops

Installation was a straightforward download via internet. It's then followed by product activation either by inet or phone. Inet activation wasn't going to happen for backlog at the site - I went "phone". Activation requires the exchange of a zillion-numbered codes, but it worked. I was directed by Best Buy to the "Home / Student" package. Unfortunately, this doesn't contain "Outlook", my primary email tool. After reviewing the "MS Office" packages, I can see why. $$$$$$$ - Wow! I'll need to find an alternative. I've used Office for many years but Win-8, of course, has to give it a "new look". I just wish engineers would not fix things that aren't broken. For the average Office user, May I suggest "Office Libre". It's an Office clone, it's got a history, it's stable, it runs on multi platforms, it's supported, it's free. Do a Google search. Maybe when people find alternatives, these guys will start considering their user base.

    Windows 8.1 Install Review

I bought this on sale, so was happy with the price. As for the installation... I have a new computer with Windows 8.1. Best Buy doesn't tell you, until you buy this product and it appears in your digital download library, that the requirements are Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7. Yes, this is stupid as pretty much all new computers come with Windows 8. It said "Not available for download on this device. Check requirements for more information." However, I was able to get around this. My computer came with a pre-installed Microsoft Office, and when I opened it, it gave me the option to buy Office or activate Office with an activation code. I was able to enter the activation code that appeared in my Best Buy digital library. So although I was unable to actually install Office on Windows 8.1, I was able to use the activation code and it seems to work just fine.

    Go to office.com/setup

I tried off and on for almost a day to get the digital download. It didn't work, nor did the downloader. I made sure my pc was updated with the latest internet explorer, but still nothing. I called customer service only to be assigned a case and then my call was dropped. I was about the refute the charges on my card when I saw the reviews here and went to office.com/setup and put in the product key...now it is installing on to my pc. I will never use digital download again. If you want to download it go to micorosoft.com( it costs the same anyway). If you have already purchased it for digital download..go to office.com/setup and enter your keycode. Save yourself a lot of frustration and time and don't use digital download.

I have purchased several products from Best Buy and I have been more than satisfied with everything; until now. I recently purchased Office 2013 Home & Student and thought my computer was compatible with the software. I got home and tried to download it and was informed that I must have Windows 8.installed to receive this download. I should have purchased an older and cheaper version of the software.

I read the previous reviews and got worried I would run into problems with my Asus and Windows 8 but after a quick call to the Geek Squad they reassured me I should be fine. I am technologically deficient so I was pleased that within 30 minutes of my online purchase the program was available for download. I had no problems and was able to start using Word immediately. Perhaps the aforementioned problems with compatibility have been fixed.

I should of read the last guys review, best buys download is horrible. I downloaded their installer and followed the instructions. Once the installer finished .... Nothing. I uninstalled, cleared cookies and restarted. Once I logged back in I saw a link for problems with installer, tried that and nothing... Finally saw the last guys comment about taking your key code that's on download page and go direct to office.com/setup.. Now it appears to work.

Easy and took no time at all. I just downloaded and activated this digital download purchase and had no issues on Windows 8.1. Microsoft Office was already pre installed on my new Windows 8.1 computer and all I had to enter was the activation code from the digital download page. And I was able to apply my Best Buy Rewards Certificate to this purchase so turned out to be a great deal.

    not for Windows Vista!

This CAN NOT be downloaded for Windows Vista. One review is incorrect. Call Microsoft to doublecheck, get their case # too. Don't ask Best Buy, I got a variety of answers after purchasing it and trying to digital download it myself. Don't be talked into paying Geek Squad to install it. Also they will not refund it!

Best Buy's digital download process is awful

Best Buy's digital download process got me to install some "Akamai Installer" which didn't do anything at all useful. If you want to install this product, get the key code and then go to office.com/setup. Best Buy's digital download interface is garbage. Do not use it.

It should not be hours and a hassle to simply buy and download a product. Probably best just to pay more and buy at a local office store.
