Currently I have had the surface pro for about 2 weeks and love it. The Power Cover Keyboard acts great as a second battery making the surface last for up to about 12 hours or more depending on your usage. The first weekend of getting the surface and keyboard I tried to let it drain down slowly and it took over 17 hours of pretty sitting for both batteries to run down. In addition to the extra lifetime to the computer I find the slightly raised keyboard (it is a little thicker than the other keyboards) easier to type on, but that's just a personal preference. It's also nice that the keyboard battery drains and charges second. Now, there are some things that bug me about the keyboard battery. First the added weight, it almost doubles the weight, but honestly I'd expect that from something that is mostly all battery. The second is that if you turn the keyboard around and want more of an extended battery tablet with a felt cover instead of a keyboard, the battery does not get used, which is a shame cause it just causes me to just pull the surface off and use it as a shorter life tablet. But I have also found one other irritating thing is that if the keyboard is separated from the surface with being placed into suspended mode it can leave the keyboard in some sort of 'on' state draining the battery over time or at least reducing it. When combined with the aforementioned non-reversibleness it makes it not work as well as a mini battery docking station. If it was reversible and did not drain slowly I would give it 5 stars as it adds so much more life to the surface.

I like having the keyboard that connects to the Surface Pro 2 so that I basically have a laptop to work with when it is attached. I like the feature in the Power keyboard that extends the battery life. And I like that the keys are big enough that I can mostly feel like I'm working on a regular size keyboard, except for some small arrow keys and others. However, I feel like the touchpad and its left/right buttons are all but useless. The motion of the arrow or cursor is jerky so it can't be placed correctly quickly. To use the right/left buttons involves hunting down with your thumb or finger to find exactly where the button is. I considered returning this keyboard and getting something wireless but hated to give up the features of this keyboard that I liked. So I settled for getting a USB mouse. That is working fine, except that my one USB port is now used for the mouse USB, and I not only have to transport my neat and tidy laptop package between work and home, but also take a loose mouse. A keyboard that I paid $200 should have a decent touchpad.

Gives you an extra boost of power, but it's heavy

The Surface Pro first generation lasts about 4.5 hours. That's a little short of my needs without finding a power outlet to plug into. The Power Cover gives me another 3.5 hours to get met through an 8 hour day. I can now make it an entire day (shift) without recharging. On the down side, the cover will add both twice the thickness of regular cover and quite a bit more weight. This is expected considering it's packed with a battery. The other issue is it does not have backlighting. For some reason, they went to the trouble of adding a light for the caps lock, but nothing else. I have also had problems where the Surface Pro will stop recharging once the main battery is charged and will not charge the cover unless I have the unit powered on. This seems to defeat the purpose, but I've dealt with it. Altogether, if you just need an extra few hours of charge, this cover does the job. I prefer it over carrying around a power brick or periodic recharging.

I required additional battery power for my SP2 while traveling for work, so decided to get the power cover. I was told by the reps at Bestbuy that it was backlight, but that was incorrect. Cover adds significant weight to the unit, and adds greatly to the thickness. Key travel seemed a little worse than the regular type cover, not major, but was noticeable. The power cover cannot be charged unless your surface is turned on and running FYI, if you have it powered off and plugged in, it will not charge for whatever reason, unit has to be running. You have to keep the Power cover in the forward facing orientation to have it work, if you flip it around so it folds along the back it will not provide the power anymore (not sure how to explain this well, I dont mean just folding the keyboard behind the unit, I mean detaching it and attaching it to the back of the device so it is not bent backwards). Battery power provided was acceptable, gave an extra ~3 hours of watching videos while doing powerpoint/MSword docs.

I am extremely pleased with the Power Cover for my Surface Pro 2. Rarely do I need to charge it any more during the day. I typically only do so now overnight when I sleep. I've seen some other reviews where people are displeased with the fact that this keyboard is not backlit, but that has never been an issue for me. I don't see where that would ever be a problem unless you tried typing in the dark. Even then, the glow from the screen along with the large white characters on the keys should easily be seen. I'm really quite pleased. The price was steep, but it completed the setup to make the Surface Pro 2 a complete system. I highly recommend it.

So it does lengthen the battery life of my Surface Pro, however there were a few issues I had with it that ultimately led to me returning it. It does double the weight of the tablet which I kind of expected. The one thing that I wasn't going to deal with out of a 200$ battery was the battery drained way too quickly. I would have both batteries fully charged and within 1-2 days this battery would drain completely. The built in battery (and almost every other battery I have ever used) drains a lot slower. This completely kills the effectiveness of this battery if I can't count on it to still carry a charge after a few days. It did about double the life of the battery when it was charged though, hence the three stars.

Overall, I disliked the size of the keys on this keyboard. I understand it is meant to be compact and portable, however, typing on it is very uncomfortable. I frequently use the Page Up, Page Down, Home, End, etc buttons, and this keyboard requires you to push the function button to use it as they are integrated into the F buttons. It adds extra power which is great. I love that feature. However, it is also fairly heavy. It adds a lot of weight to a portable device. The trackpad is terrible IMO. It is very tiny and there is little distinction between the trackpad and the surrounding areas. It is easy to completely miss the trackpad since it's hard to tell where you're touching. Overall, great product if you don't mind the small trackpad and keys. It definitely adds battery life.

This keyboard is the only one that I was looking for. It's very powerful for extending the battery life of the Surface. The touch for the keys is just right for someone used to typing on a conventional keyboard. The associate in computers just needed to unlock the case for me to purchase it, but denied that they had any in stock. I was looking at three of them. Then, he wanted to ring up my order on his terminal........... nah, I took it to the front cashier.

My Surface Pro got the equivalent battery time to my work issued laptop: 4 - 5 hours yet its more powerful. However it wasn't enough for full day use until now with the power cover. Now I get full day usage for normal computing. Of course if you watch movies power drains faster but again I can get out a lot more movie time utilizing this accessory. While it does add some weight, the benefits of the additional power far outweigh the added ounces.

Harder to type for me not enough spaces between keys. As stated in the summary battery does not last as long as stated in other reviews. Once battery life has been depleted you can't replace it yourself and the warranty doesn't cover it. I would recommend it but beware that when the battery has come to its end of life you will need to spend money for Microsoft to replace it for you. Or purchase another one. Also the keys are not illuminated for night typing

Love this keyboard, however, the people in the store didn't realize these were only in their overflow section. They were not with all the other tablet keyboards. Took time to find it in the store but was worth it. Wish they had these earlier as I had already bought the other keyboard. This one is much more sturdy and long lasting.

The super flat keyboard that I purchased for my first Surface tablet worked but this one is much better. It has actual keys that click, that is more like an actual keyboard for a laptop. It is, in fact, similar to the keyboard/case for my Surface Pro 3. This was the only one in the store. I hope you are able to find one for your Surface 1 or 2.

I am loving have a keyboard for my Surface 2. It's very nice being able to have the keyboard and the touchscreen features. I think having the extra battery life will come in handy too. Also, although the power cover keyboard weighs more and is thicker, my original cover I bought for my Surface still fits with the keyboard so that is great!

The power cover or keyboard for the Surface is outstanding. It extends the battery life by what seems like 2X. I had a cross-country flight and had more than enough power to last the duration of the flight. I used my Surface Pro 2 the ENTIRE time we were airborne. I watched two movies and checked 200+ e-mails. Great product.

Unless you're a child or have small hands, typing on this keyboard can be difficult on a good day, and next to impossible when attempting speed-of-thought type pace. The surface can be difficult to clean too. It's also way too overpriced at $200. I ended up buying a wireless keyboard and haven't seen the need for this keyboard since.

Rarely charge out of necessity. Almost always charge at my convenience. In fact, when I'm on the subway or on the road, I'll use it to charge my phone! Keys feel better than my Type 1 Cover. The bulk of the cover is actually a plus, making the Surface feel more stable on my lap in those tight subway seats.

I love the fact that this is a keyboard and power unit all in one. The battery life is awesome and extends my Surface to where I can almost get 8 hours between the two. The only reason I did not rate this product as excellent is because I do not like the keypad for the mouse. It is very touchy. Well worth the price to have the extra power.

We had to replace the original keyboard that came with our surface. It died the day after the warranty went out and Microsoft did nothing to help us. Best buy at least tried and went so far as to give us a very good discount on a new keyboard that was tactile and works much better for us.

This extends my classroom use as teacher presenting from 2.5 hours to 6 hours. However, the keyboard battery will not charge unless the Surface is ON or in SLEEP mode. OFF means no charging. My surface does not handle sleeping repetitively without a reboot to correct driver issues with Bluetooth.

more expensive then it should be given the weight and actual extra power it adds. if you buy it with the surface rt or pro it's not as bad but if your upgrading your keyboard/cover it become a 300 keyboard... Does not fit the new Surface (well properly since he screen is bigger) but does fit the rt version.
