A little upgrade over the Orig Surface Book

I bought this Surface Book 2, because the screen on my original Surface Book cracked (from a drop). This review is a comparison between the original Surface Book (not performance base) and Surface Book 2. Look/Feel--nearly identical . Supposedly the Surface Book 2 weighs a little bit more than the original due to a larger battery. I can't tell the difference. I think the 2 is a little less precarious/top heavy than the original, which is nice. Battery Life--noticeably better. The original unit would go down in battery quite quickly, and noticeably--easily down 20% in an hour or two of fairly moderate use. The 2 holds a charge quite a bit better. For some reason, Microsoft included a shorter power cord in the 2, so I'm still using my old cord. Speed--my original unit was i7, 16 MB RAM. My Surface Book 2 is also i7, 16 MB RAM. The 2 is noticeably faster than the original (apparently the i7 processer in the 2 is quad-core). Less freezing, slowing down than the original. I am not a gamer so I can't speak to speed under extremely demanding graphics. Resolution--the resolution on the 2 is supposedly better. I cannot tell the difference. I thought the resolution on the original was beautiful, and the resolution on the 2 is the same as far as I can tell. Cost--still expensive, though similarly priced as the original. Surface Books are pretty premium computers and are priced that way. I feel like you get more functionality out of this unit than a similarly priced Apple. Not including the pen/stylus in the Surface Book 2 was kind of chintzy. Fortunately, I already had one from the original, but if you don't, the pen will cost you about $60. Summary--I liked my original Surface Book a lot. I bought the original when I had an Apple that was still ok, but wanted to move to the Surface Book for additional functionality and the touch screen. My complaints with the original were generally battery life and the precariousness of the unit. Both of these issues have improved some in the Surface Book 2. The new unit is a little bit faster and smoother, which is nice. The differences are there, but none of them are "huge." The two units basically look and feel a lot the same. I upgraded tot he 2 strictly because my original one had a broken screen, but it's probably not worth making a switch if your original unit is still fine, given the steep cost for this computer. I probably wouldn't buy an original Surface Book now that the Surface Book 2 is available (unless you get a deep discount), but I wouldn't drop the money upgrading from an original for the fairly subtle improvements in the Surface Book 2. I still like the Surface Book 2 a lot, but I liked my original Surface Book a lot, also.

Very Poor Performance for too High a Price

I purchased this to replace my 2012 MacBook Pro. It was touted as an amazing system for Photo Editing, especially due to the touch screen, and versatility of the platform. I use the Adobe Suite including Photoshop and Lightroom. Pros: I do really like the touch screen, and I like the ability to convert it to a tablet when I need something light and more portable. For that, it works... kind of.... Cons: I got a 13.5" system with i7 Processor / 16GB/ with 512 GB dGPU. ALL of these specs far surpass what my 2012 MacBook Pro has. I made sure I kept the system lean. Was only running Adobe Suite on it. Almost immediately, it lagged. Froze up. Saw HUGE delays while I was editing photos. a brush wouldn't register, for times, up to 45 seconds after I touched the screen. I had to restart LR and PS numerous times after they froze completely. I called the support line for Microsoft who told me it was due to software updates. So, while on the phone, I updated EVERYTHING. No change. Called again. They were unsure what the problem was, but kept telling me it was updates. They also recommended I store the photos locally to improve speed. Tried that. No change. For kicks, I went to edit the same photos on my MacBook Pro... my 2012 with an i5 Processor... It worked just as well, if not better than the brand new Surface Book 2. Infuriating to spend over $2500 when it was all said and done (Including the dock, and pen) only to have it lag, freeze, and crash on me. Not worth the money at all. If this was a $1200 system I may be more forgiving, but for the price, with the specs, it should absolutely be performing MUCH better than this. Extremely disappointed.

Good Computer with some missing Surface features

Generally I like the computer and Surface machines are my choice for fast powerful laptops. I also have a Surface Pro 4 which is only hampered by the smaller screen. Pros This machine is very fast and can do what almost any laptop can do. The screen is great and setup was super easy. Once I figured out what a "Microsoft Account was, I logged in and it picked up my license for Office and installed it. All of the Google stuff also magically appeared. The store didn't stock the I7 / 16GB model, but it came the next day. It was supposed to be 2 day delivery. You can't beat the battery life. Cons One of the features is the SD card slot which can be used as a permanent additional drive. However, it goes into the left side of the keyboard and sticks out about 1/2 inch. This means it can eventually be damaged because it just asking to be bumped. The power supply is on the right side of the keyboard and gets knocked off more often than my Surface Pro. The backlighting of the keyboard is only good in low light conditions. If there is ambient light you have to shut it off because you can read the keys. The blue glow obscures it. It's hard to believe that the MSFT design people would not protect the SD card and have the keyboard obscured by the blue glow. These two things are the most glaring disadvantages. Overall, I would recommend this machine. If you're a Vet, go to the Microsoft site and print the price with the Vet's discount and Best Buy will gladly match the 10% discount.

This was an expensive laptop, purchased for me as a semi-professional author and illustrator. My fiance, a true tech guru, purchased it for me after lengthy discussion with myself and the helpful best buy salesperson. It wasn't in stock, so Best Buy had it shipped to my job, where it arrived today. After charging the laptop for perhaps two hours, I carefully opened it on my hour-long lunch break. The hinge seemed quite ugly, but the overall color is a clean, soft silver. Very modern. It turned on immediately, where I experienced the minor annoyance of setting myself up with the enterprising Cortana. I will likely never use the program, but the voice is pleasant enough. I'd read many reviews promising me better speed if I upgraded to Windows ten, I had a full hour, I thought - Why not? Yeah... Four hours later, it has JUST managed to begin the actual update, despite fast, reliable internet. Webpages load quickly, but the windows update is very concerning. I've already been prompted to restart the laptop once, and it doesn't seem to be done. Best Buy's offer for the laptop included a Surface Pen, but it was not included anywhere in the shipment. (No, I'm sure. It's most of the reason we bought it, that the cool pen bit/combo was temporarily included for some sale or other). The backlight has yet to turn on completely or with consistency. The bulb near the windows key is bright and pretty, very refreshing, but the rest of the board isn't lighted really at all, despite my attempts at trouble shooting and fixing the brightness. It's clear and noticeable difference. I expected to be astounded by this product, and am instead finding myself dealing with minor bugs and glitches for a slightly-improved speed. We are not off to a good start. If, like me, you're technically savvy enough but have strong anxiety, consider carefully if the struggles I'm already experiencing are worth it. One hopes my risk will have equal reward, and an improved experience as the relationship steadies. If nothing else, I hope I end up with the accessory I paid for! ((I'm sure it was a mistake. Not accusing anybody of theft, but it was a disappointing moment.))

Ok, I do love this laptop. I purchased the 16GB 512GB. Best laptop I've gotten to put my hands on and I've used Dell, Apple and Toshiba brands before. It's been almost two months of use and I have only a few complaints. Let me tell you what I love about it first. Pros: Touchscreen is very useful, practical and pretty accurate. I did buy the pen but I say I only use it 30% of the time at this moment. I am very early on in my engineering education so I haven't gotten to use any engineering programs on here yet. But it has worked really well for my macroeconomics class where I needed to print out worksheets and upload them. So instead of doing that I can do it right on the screen, save as pdf and upload. Savin them trees! Speakers are nice and loud for a laptop. They're positioned in a smart place so if you've switched to the tablet mode your hands won't be placed over the speakers. The webcam is good. Typing is nice just don't put your palms over the touchpad. Battery life is amazing. Beats most laptop battery life. The speed of the computer is phenomenal. Rarely slows down even when I have multiple tabs , mail app, Spotify and homework programs open. Microsoft really did well with this processor. If you can afford this machine, I recommend that you buy. You will fall in love with its design and practicality. Windows Hello sign in is a pretty good security feature. It only signs in for me :) Cons: The only con I have about this computer is the touchpad. It is extremely sensitive even at low sensitivity setting. I have changed the settings a bit and it has gotten a little less annoying but clicking on it is rather frustrating. A lot of the times it will right click instead of regular click. When I click and scroll it right clicks instead. Maybe it's me?

    Lightweight, long lasting powerhouse...

As a geeky gaming type person I have a number of machines I could use. So why the surface book? Coming from a Macbook 13" I wanted something along the same lines (size/weight/build quality) that had similar battery life but could also run modern games at reduced settings. I have two 15.6 laptops (while they have GTX1070's in them) that are just to large and heavy to bring with me while on the road. I bought a 12" Surface2 but the i5 and iGPU were unable to play games. The 13.5" Surface Book 2 seems to be the best of both worlds. So far I've left the default power settings intact. After loading a dozen or more games that I enjoy playing came the configuration of the games. While it was understood that the native resolution might not be able to be used however I found that in some games I dialed the resolution back to 800x600 and low settings to get acceptable frame rates. Considering that my 13" MacBook Pro won't even play these games at all says alot for the GTX1050. It gets your foot in the door but is not very powerful. On optimum power settings I was unable to get the GPU fan to "get loud", presumably the power and graphics settings in use were low enough to have unthrottled CPU/GPU performance without kicking the cooling fan into "turbo overdrive" and making alot of noise. I think the Surfacebook2 has just the right design tradeoffs to make it a winner. Light and long lasting if your not playing games but does have the ability to run/start modern games (abet with reduced settings) but better have another power source nearby.

After long deliberation, the reading of many reviews and the consideration of other products, I can happily say that the Surface Book 2 has been outstanding to date. The purchase of the Surface Book 2 was primarily to replace an outdated Samsung tablet and goes far beyond that product's capabilities, which was one of the primary objectives for the purchase. The battery life is amazing and from the initial use lasts 12 to 13 hours a day before requiring a recharge. The display is brilliant and crisp and the new I7 8th Gen processor certainly handles all the typical applications with ease and allows mutli-tasking with different applications. The table mode works well and occurs with a touch of a button. Along with the Surface Book 2, I purchased the Microsoft Pen and Arc Mouse and both work extremely well. The pen is truly useful and is exactly the experience expected with any Surface product. The one negative is that you don't typically find any deals on this product but if you can find a little break, it is certainly helpful. Bottom line is that this product is certainly worth the spend if you want a premium experience and Microsoft's flagship. There was a brief consideration of the Surface Laptop and the Surface Pro but the pros for the Surface Book 2 outweighed the other two in the end.

This computer is just amazing in every way. I bought it for work and school. I am a Ph.D. student and research assistant in a neuroscience lab and I constantly work with huge datasets. This computer makes collecting and analyzing data an absolute breeze. The amount of time and effort I've saved in this regard alone is invaluable so the price tag is really no concern at this point. Additionally, this computer allows me so much mobility. It feels great to know that I can take this computing power anywhere and everywhere. Also, the computer is a pretty fantastic entertainment machine. I can play Xbox anywhere games at 1080p very comfortably and other PC games. And though I haven't explored virtual reality yet... this machine is very capable of that as well which is exciting because as VR game titles and technologies improve this computer will allow me to experience them. Finally, Windows 10 is absolutely amazing and a really beautiful operating system and the customer support is phenomenal. The value you get with this price tag is really worth it and I know its hard to see that at first glance but I totally recommend this machine if your budget will allow for it.

I really like this notebook, sturdy, incredibly fast, great display and the key board is way better than surface models since it is almost like a laptop. two batteries, two video cards. The setup is that the keyboard is used to hold the high end graphics card and the larger battery so when you disconnect the keyboard you have a smaller battery and onboard video to keep the tablet cool. It's amazing it doesn't overheat, especially since there are no fans blowing out of the machine. I haven't played any video games on it but have ripped some video (HD video) from my camera on it and it is really fast with the I7, 16 GB ram and the solid state drive. This book contains everything to replace what made computers slow in the past. I'm very happy with it. I would recommend this for anyone needing that extra power or even just likes to game when on the road.

I needed a computer with a good (dedicated) video graphics card for running a 3D home modeling software and I also needed great screen resolution for editing photos. I initially was looking at the Mac workbook with the dedicated graphics card but couldn’t get over the price of $2,500 and then need to still purchase additional products like the SD card reader. I am very glad I started looking into the Microsoft surface. This computer has been great running my 3D modeling software, the screen resolution is amazing. I also love being able to disconnect the screen and just ‘lounge’ surfing the internet like a tablet. I am use to working on both apple and windows products though, so if you have only worked on apple products only there would probably be a learning curve. But I would recommend this computer for anyone looking for a higher end computer for graphics/video/editing/etc

I have owned over 30 laptops in the past 10 years and I will have to say this is the first Microsoft laptop I have ever purchased due to the cost of them but this is the best laptop I have ever owned. I have had HP Spectre, Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga, Apple Macbook Air in the past year just name a few and the Book 2 is by far the superior machine. Yes it is probably $600 more thank the comparable Lenovo and HP Spectre but it is well worth it. The design is amazing how the screen detaches from the keyboard. The build is solid and versatile. The machine is fast and the graphics are amazing and up to par to any gaming laptop on the market. I will update my review as I get more time using this beautiful machine.

When I opened the screen for the very first time, the hinge really amazed me. Screen is extremely bright and sharp. Compute power is great. Something that I really like is facial detection camera, I don't need to type the password ever and it works in low light as well. Quicker than what I tried in iPhone X. To name a few qualities - Screen, Battery (of course), touch response, best machine for programmers like me and even for designers. Cons: everyone says it's expensive (but the performance really satisfies.. so you get what you paid for).

Great item. It's capabilities work great for personal use and my at home business. It's size, ways of use options (open laptop, flipped back laptop, tablet without keyboard) contribute to its ease of use, functionality and versatility to work for any situation (working on a budget, working with a client, sitting in the airport, etc). It boots up quickly, and is fast when opening programs and working on designs. The screen detaches and attaches quickly. Very responsive touch screen. So far, the battery has held a charge great, not dying too quickly. I definitely recommend getting a keyboard and screen protector and a fitted case/cover to provide protection.

Been using it for about a week, and have enjoyed it so far. I am a software developer and it is quick enough to do the things that I need to do. I qualified for some discounts on the Microsoft site, but was still able to get it cheaper at best buy. I also thought it was important to check out the product in the store and I'm glad I did. I was thinking about buying a surface pro 6, but decided, after looking at them in the store, that the screen was too small. This one is perfect (the 15" screen would be great, except in tablet mode it feels way too big to me). The 13.5" is perfect (actually still pretty big in tablet mode, but not too big).

I bought this totally for the tablet and pen experience, esp. OneNote. The experience is not a good one---esp. at this price. The surface pen writes with little random jags. It's frustrating and makes my writing look like I'm 90 yrs old. Exaggerating a bit but it is definitely noticeable and makes it feel like I'm using either cheap or old technology---neither of which the SB2 is. Love the NVIDIA 1060 though. The iPad Pro has very fluid inking but the pencil is absolutely garbage---charging, hard tip, no eraser/buttons, etc. Apparently, the pen/inking issue has been around on the Surface line for a long time. Too bad MS does not care enough to address the issue. If you don't care about the pen this should be a nice laptop---but then why not just get a laptop instead?

After using a wonderful Surface Pro 4 for almost three years for my one and only computer, it was starting to show signs of wear. I travel extensively, with 4-6 trips to Asia per year, along with dozens of other domestic destinations. I couldn't imagine lugging around a traditional laptop or notebook computer. This Surface Book simply rocks. It is ffffffast, lightweight, reliable and the battery lasts forever. Mine is loaded up with the fastest processor and gobs of memory, as I typically use it for multitasking and 3D CAD modeling. Wen I'm at my home office, I use the dock power supply (which gives me 5 more USB ports) and a second monitor. I simply could not be happier.

My first choice was an Apple IPad, but being a developer and using Microsoft visual studio I was leaning to a windows machine, The Surface wasn't even on my radar until the Surface Book 2 came out. With the detachable screen you can use it like an ipad and still have the benefits of a windows machine. The screen is crisp, bright, and easy to read. The keyboard and mouse have the look and feel of a MacBook and it is light yet sturdy. You don't feel like your going to break it. I opted for the higher level internals, CPU & memory, storage is only 500GB but with an office 365 subscription you get 1TB of storage in the cloud. I've had the device since Nov '17 and very please with the performance and versatility.

This thing makes a pretty decent tablet, but I wouldn’t use it for anything other than light web browsing and emails. After buying it, I had a lot of problems with it not keeping a charge on the battery and after some research, found out that the power supply doesn’t actually provide enough power to keep it charged if you’re using it while it’s plugged in. From my experience, if you have more than one browser tab open (or an app like Spotify) the battery actually drains while it’s plugged in. So you can’t actually use it for more than a couple of hours before having to stop using it and let it recharge. Fail.

Bought this 2 in one and I love it. It is like a laptop but with the cool feature that you can detach the keyboard from. The great this about this 2 in one is that the keyboard is not a little add on, it is a legit laptop keyboard that is made of the same material any laptop would be made of. It is not just a magnet that is keeping it connected, in order to detach it, you have to push a button and weight for a few seconds to detach it. It is a touch screen so you can use a stylet on it. It is fast and have not had any problems with it so far.

I've had the Surface Pro 3 for a few years now, and it is still going strong. Unfortunately, the changes in Adobe's products, meant that I no longer had adequate memory to support them. So, it was time for an upgrade. I looked at several 2-in-1s, but kept coming back to the Surface Book. I am glad I stuck with this choice. It is solid. I have fired up Photoshop and Lightroom at the same time, heavily using both and it barely yawned. The palm aware is so much more reliable on the SB2. Kill off the bloatware, and you have a solid system, which allows for tablet use and excellent graphics. It costs more than other brands, but it is built with the photographer and illustrator in mind.
