    ALMOST the perfect convertible laptop.

If I could I would give this laptop 4 1/2 stars. It is as close as I have ever come to finding the perfect laptop. First let me get it's problems out of the way. Cons: 1. The biggest and most glaring problem with this laptop is the power supply. It is not powerful enough to fully power the laptop when doing intensive processing. This means that even when you have the laptop plugged in the batteries will discharge when you are gaming using the GTX 1060. you can probably game for around 4 or 5 hours before the laptop goes into power saving mode and you have to stop. I personally never game for that long so it isn't really a problem for me but could be for others. 2. The screen resolution. The screen resolution is an oddball nearly 4K resolution of 3240X2160. Most games cant be played at this high of a resolution and there are never any lower resolutions that you can choose that will run without letterboxing. As a workaround you can install the Intel graphics driver from their web site. This will allow you to set up custom resolutions. Create two resolutions, 1624X1080 (1/2 resolution) and 2432X1620 (3/4 resolution) in the Intel driver and they will become available in most games even when using the GTX 1060. 3. The keyboard backlight. It is actually harder to see the keys with it on. I never use it. 4. Storage space. 256GB is too small for a laptop of this price. I added a 256GB Samsung U3 microSDXC card and use the BaseQI adapter for Surfacebook 2 so that it fits in the SD card slot without sticking out. This card has been plenty fast enough for applications and gaming but adds another $100 in cost. Now for the Pros: 1. The screen is beautiful with great color and viewing angles. It is easily as good as my old Macbook Pro retina. 2. The keyboard is wonderful to type on with a great feel and travel. 3. The trackpad feels and works great. While it could be bigger it works every bit as good as the trackpad on my Mac did. 4. The design and quality of construction is excellent. This laptop oozes quality. The fit and finish are every bit as good as my old MacBook Pro. 5. The optional peripherals are outstanding. The Surface Dial and Pen are very well made and work flawlessly. 6. A built in Xbox radio. This means that you can pair an Xbox controller without using the huge wireless dongle and you get full functionality (headset support). This is a small thing but I LOVE this feature. 7. Tablet mode is great. Detaching the screen and using it like a tablet is seamless and works wonderfully. A 15 inch tablet is super cool. Having a large, fully functioning, Windows 10 tablet is something that you have to try to believe. Also the tablet is very light for it's size. 8. A built in Nvidia GTX 1060. This laptop can really play games well. It has played everything that I have thrown at it. This is only available when the screen is attached to the keyboard as the 1060 is in the keyboard. See the cons above for the reasons that this is not a perfect gaming machine. 9. Magnetic charger. This is nice because if someone trips over your cord it just pops out of the laptop instead of making your laptop go flying. 10. Battery life. I can fun pretty much all day doing normal productivity tasks. 11. Windows 10. I have not seriously used Windows in many years. I always had it installed on my gaming desktop and it is on my work computer but I used MacOS for daily personal use. Windows has come a long way and I'm very impressed with it's functionality and flexibility. I have been using this laptop for about a month now and I am constantly impressed by it. Coming from a 2016 MacBook Pro I feel that I have definitely gained more than I have lost. If you can live with it's few cons buy this laptop. You won't be disappointed!

I purchased the 15” Surface Book 2 on release day and have been using it for a week now. It’s been a while since I have enjoyed using a laptop this much. I work full time and I’m a part time student. I do an extensive amount of writing and light work in Adobe Creative Suite. I require a laptop that’s comfortable, portable, powerful, and dependable. The Surface Book 2 checks all of the boxes for me and then some- it’s powerful, screen is beautiful, and the ergonomics are phenomenal. I have used a variety of laptops over the last two years. They were all nice in different ways, but each forced me to make a tradeoff. For instance, ThinkPads have nice keyboards, but typically have dim/low resolution screens. The 15” Dell XPS has a beautiful 4K screen but its keyboard had tiny keys with minimal travel. Battery life on the XPS was also challenging and the vents on the bottom were easily blocked when using on my lap. The latest 15” MacBook Pro is nice, and I was willing to deal with the dongle issues, but the keyboard had even less travel than the XPS and it just wasn’t comfortable to use for long periods of time. At one point I even tried the original 13” Surface Book (i5 8 GB RAM 256 GB SSD w/ dGPU). I wanted so badly to like it, but the 13” screen just wasn’t enough to make it my daily driver. It also seemed a bit anemic power-wise and would get hot easily resulting in lots of noisy fan action. The 15” screen on the Surface Book 2 is bright and beautiful. I prefer the 3:2 aspect ratio to laptops with widescreen displays. It’s perfect for working on multiple windows simultaneously. It’s reminiscent of the way laptop screens used to be before everyone switched to widescreen in the early-to-mid-2000s. The extra screen real estate of the 15” screen is worth the money. I was worried it would be too bulky or unwieldy, but it isn’t. The keyboard is impeccable, and the glass trackpad is probably the best you’ll find on a Windows laptop. I’ve been a fan of Microsoft’s ergonomics dating back to the Windows 95 era when Microsoft introduced the IntelliMouse and Natural Keyboard. No vent holes on the bottom of the keyboard base make it incredibly “lapable” and the screen wobble has been reduced from the previous generation. My only criticism is that coil whine is apparent on occasion, particularly when setting performance to “best.” It can be reduced by setting to “recommended.” Also, would have also been nice of Microsoft included the Surface Pen and/or started the base configuration at 512 GB SSD. But neither of these are deal breakers for me.

Too many flaws for such an expensive notebook

The Surface Book 2 is great in theory, but poorly done in execution. There are way too many compromises and flaws for what is supposed to be a premium notebook: * Terrible port selection: No HDMI or DisplayPort output, despite plenty of room, no Thunderbolt 3, headphone port is in an awkward position when the tablet is connected to the base (top right of the tablet, right where the Windows "close" button is) * Charger cable blocks the only USB-C port when it's attached * Nvidia drivers won't install without a workaround * Charger can't keep up with the graphics card and you lose about 10% battery charge per hour while gaming, even when plugged in * No stylus pen included, nowhere to stash the pen so it's easy to lose ($99 to buy a new one) * The fn key is also the fn-lock key, and it's very easy to accidentally toggle the fn-lock. This is a huge PITA if you want to keep the function keys f1-f12, because a stray finger or using the fn-key for paging up and down (for example) would toggle the function keys into function mode again. Also, the light mysteriously goes off when the keyboard backlight goes off, so you can't really ever tell if the fn lock is actually on with any reliability. * Very uneven keyboard backlighting, to the degree that it looks like some of the letters are just plain broken * Very loud fan noise when 1060 graphics card is in use Basically, if all you want to do with this is sketch things, it should work fine. But that's not worth $2500 in my opinion; just get an iPad or one of the cheaper Surfaces. This is supposed to be the laptop that combines the pen-and-touch functionality of the other Surfaces with premium performance. It fails to do so, compromising too much along the process. I will be returning this laptop soon and probably opting for a Razer Blade 14" (if you want better performance for $1000 less) or maybe a LG Gram or Samsung Notebook 9 (similar performance minus the dedicated graphics, much lighter and much more affordable.) Would not recommend the Surface Book 2 unless you just want a very big drawing tablet with an excellent screen. It's not worth the price otherwise.

I recently made the switch from Mac to PC. At first I was excited. Then the painful reminder of why I ran x86 on a 1st Gen Dell Vista. The good. The keyboard is on par with my previous 4 Macs (17", 2x 15", MacBook Air) The build quality if the machine is great. The Bad: the track pad was horrible several Google searches and a few MS forums and I found out that MS didn't have a fix and no other drivers would work. So I went out and bought a mouse. To be fair windows has done several updates since my June purchase and the trackpad does appear to work much better but I'm still using my mouse 90% of the time. More Bad: there seems to be a problem with the 256gb drives they are on the low end of Samsungs product line. Once the machine falls below 100gb write speeds fall way below 300. You can find an abundance post with a simple Google search that includes the model of the SSD drive. *This only seems to be an issue with the 256gb drive. Even More Bad: the power supply. I use the machine for graphic design, video editing and programming. Out of the box the power supply is under rated for the machine it's 102 watts and 7 of those watts are reserved for the USB port. Leaving 95 watts for the book. When you take in account that the CPU and GPU can eat up over 105 watts this means the supplied power supply is heavily under rated. So, when I'm editing videos I'll get a notice that the machine has gone from charging to depleting. To some this might not be a big deal. To me spending money on higher end gear should deliver a high end experience. At over 2k I would have been better off with my mid 2015 MacBook pro. I'm disappointed with my purchase the sales rep at my local best buy was a good guy, however under educated when it comes to product knowledge. Neither MS or geek squad have provided any value. I've been loyal to BB and have enjoyed the services I've received in the past. However this 2500 mistake is the cause of our break up. Please excuse any grammatical errors as I'm typing this from my phone while I reset this expensive paper weight for the 3rd time

Wanted real stereo separation and responsive bass for my garage. I didn't want the typical portable Bluetooth all in one speaker box. I also looked at modern day Boom Box's, and they were just wrong and I didn't want disco lights either. So I looked until I found this small LG Speaker bar and Subwoofer, The size was perfect for a new dedicated shelve. I didn't really get to check it out in store because they had it locked from Bluetooth connectivity. I went ahead and purchased it and took it home. RESULTS- Stupid easy to connect Bluetooth. NOTE- each speaker is Bluetooth and requires a dedicated power cord outlet. The Primary (left) speaker has an display to show functions like volume, sound modes, sub, treble, bass etc.., controlled by a wireless remote that allows me to skip a song while using Pandora from my phone (or use the phone for same) By this system having SEPERATE L/R speakers I am able to put some space between them. I found that by laying them down, it gave me the stereo separation I was wanting. All that said, I am really impressed with the overall sound. The L/R speakers have good crisp/clean mids and highs, and do not sound compressed. The SUB fills the garage with the bass I was wanting. It wont make your ears bleed or feel the bass pounding in your chest. It just sounds good! But it is plenty loud enough to hear in the driveway. This replaced my old Marantz full sized receiver and Paradigm bookshelf speakers. Well worth the 299.00 sale price. I will be purchasing another for the living room and utilize the added features this system has for A/V use and connectivity not detailed in this review.

After debating (and saving) for six months, I finally purchased the Surface Book 2! Despite my previous laptop holding 650GB, I opted for the 256GB for a few reasons... 1.) Save money. I purchased a 400GB micro SD for additional storage to help save some money. 2.) Of all my files, I frequently use maybe...2 or 3 folders? Everything else stays on my 4TB external desktop hard drive, so I really have no need (currently) to dish out another $400 for the 516GB This laptop types flawlessly, which is fantastic for typing class notes and papers! I am in love with the screen, and the fact that it is detachable is wondrous for late-night reading in bed (a.k.a. homework assignments!!) In addition to wanting a laptop that is great for productivity, I also wanted one that was capable for gaming. I'm not a hard-core gamer, as I've not the time, but I do enjoy playing Final Fantasy XIV which the Surface Book 2 plays like a dream. With how well it handles gaming, I sort of wish I purchased the 516GB, but until I game a bit more frequently, I am quite content with the 256GB + 400GB micro SD. I do wish that the laptop came with the pen, though it is understandable as to why it is sold separately. I am looking forward to purchasing the pen, mostly to use for paper-editing. The Surface Book 2 is the lightest of the laptops I was looking at (HP Spectre, HP Envy, and Razer Blade 15), which is great for travelling. I am extremely satisfied with my purchase after eyeing it for six months, and I got it just in time for the new semester to begin. In all honesty, I think my next laptop after this will also be by Microsoft. I think I've finally found the PC company I like best.

This is the Surface Book that I wanted when they first released it in 2015. The issues that plagued the first Surface Book are gone now. This has long battery life, around 8-10 hours of real use. The 15" version has a dedicated GPU that is powerful enough to edit videos and play games when you have some down time. The 15" (almost 4K) display is bright and has excellent color reproduction. It is still light enough to use as a tablet and has better battery life on it's own now (around 3-4 hours). The overall system is 4.2 lbs and is extremley light for a 15" laptop. The speakers are loud and full and always face you since they are in the display. Ports are excellent and include; full sd card reader, 2 USB 3.1 ports, the surface power input that doubles with the surface dock, and a USB C port (lacking thunderbolt 3). The operating system is Windows Pro 10 and works great with the new Ink features. The new surface pen (not included) supports over 4,000 levels of sensitivity and has side angle support with some apps. The new keyboard feels snappier and not as mushy and has 1.55mm of travel. The track pad is glass and is the best of any Windows laptops. I would highly recommend this laptop to anyone. It can handle your work and play with all day battery life and power with the internal GPU. -CoachCWC

Bought this laptop 3 months ago. Looking for a lightweight laptop to work and game. Wanted a touchscreen (for work/ presentation use) and a 1060 for gaming. Sold my Alienware r3 OLED which I had for 6 months. The Good... Looks great. For such a slim package... 1060 / tablet mode / screen / power / battery this laptop looked like a winner. After about 1 month, the bugs began. When gaming, battery depletes when charging. The screen would not detach sometimes. Then the laptop would freeze here and there. Then the 1060 would not be found sometimes. I found a lot of work arounds online and after many hours of trial and error... and learning the hard reset.. can get the laptop issues mostly resolved. Read many posts online and it seems like a software glitch on the updates. But why is a 2.5K computer having all of these issues.. and the updates are not getting these known issues resolved. I hate having to everyday... treat this thing gingerly.. hoping its not going to get buggy... and then spend 15 minutes resetting it. Not acceptable for a flagship product. I've Lenovo Carbon (1 year) and XPS 15 for 1 year (no problems) and Alienware 13 (no problems) and now this. I wish I can return this thing... going to a Microsoft tech in a couple of days and see what they can do, Very disappointed in Microsoft on having a product with so many unresolved issues.

I was a die hard Surface Pro user looking to upgrade my older machine. While the Surface Book 2 is nowhere near as portable it is still lightweight, relatively thin, and has the muscle to play the games I like to play. (Fortnite, Battletech, Champions Online). As a teacher I love that the 15" screen is large enough that I can work on two different apps snapped to either side of the screen and not have to zoom in like I did on my old tablet. And Windows Hello is spoiling me. I like that I can simply sit down and look at the screen and be logged in while never having to worry about a kid watching me log in and getting my password. The added cost of a touchscreen was something I wasn't sure I wanted to pay, but I am happy I did. Quickly zooming into different pictures or trying out interactive SMART Note files before I go live with them with my class, what I thought was an expensive luxury is now something I can't imagine living without. Battery life is perfect for a 12 hour day as a teacher. Enter grades while listening to music, running PowerPoint presentations or SMART Note files, playing videos or songs, and emails, all through wifi.

I really love this 2 in 1 laptop. It is AMAZINGLY fast, portable and how the storage and some of the battery moves with the detachable screen. It has worked flawlessly and I have to say it's worth every cent I paid for it. Because it's a "Microsoft" branded computer, it isn't loaded down with all the 3rd party crap that other vendors (like Dell and HP) load on new systems and you spend the first day getting rid of it all. While it's "almost" perfect there are just 2 minor things I would change in the next version that comes out: 1. Allow the screen to be bent ALL the way back around for quick tablet mode. Currently, you have to detach the tablet then flip it, reattach it if you want it behind the keyboard. I'm not sure why MS decided on this limitation. 2. Add enough case to house the pen inside the system. Sure the magnets are strong but for travel, I would prefer having the pen slide inside the unit. It would be really cool if the magnits could be used to ensure the pen is inserted correctly and would pull the pen inside.

I really like all of my Apple devices that I have and am still happy with most of them. After researching the Microsoft Surface at Best Buy and online, I decided to take the plunge and try the Surface Book 2 out. For me the main upside is the touch screen on a laptop computer. Apple’s touch bar is far less user friendly than a touch screen for sure, I love my iPad Pro and wish Apple made a Touch Screen laptop. I was concerned about being able to navigate the Windows program since I am all in with IOS, but have been surprised that it is not as hard as it used to be. I did not grow up with computers nor have I used them extensively for a job, so the difficulties of adaptation to operating systems is very real for me. The Surface Book 2 is very fast and smooth in its operation, So far I like it a lot. The 15” screen is wonderful! I like the drawing features that are available for my husband to use as well. I look forward to seeing the cartoons he creates on it.

Upgraded from my Surface Pro 3 (i5 128GB) because I needed more processing power. I've had my new laptop a little over a month now. Since the battery on the new surface book is awesome, I can run it in high performance mode at all times. The processor maxes out at 4.2 Ghz, but stays fairly consistently between 3.8 to 3.9. I'm running 4 windows virtual desktops with numerous brower tabs (Chrome and Edge), MS Office aps, and occasionaly Google Earth Pro. Rarely does the laptop get hung up. I'd say the only downside to the laptop is a lack of accessories. There is no true case. I'd love for UAG to come out with one. In the meantime, I bought a pretty decent sleeve in which the closing flap doubles as a mouse pad. At the price, this is definitely an investment. I even compared it to many gaming laptops (I'm not a gamer) and I felt this was a better option. Very pleased with my purchase.

    Amazing... but the price

This laptop is amazing. I tested it out for a few weeks and I loved it. The functionality of it and being able to detach the screen from the body, is great! This is so thin, light and powerful! While it's connected to the body, you have access to its Nvidia GTX 1060 video card, which you can game with ease. Or if you need to do a lot of video editing or just graphic intense stuff, this guy is great. The only downside of this laptop is the price. For all the functionality, speed, power you get, it's almost worth it. But in the end, I just couldn't justify the price with what I had. Maybe if the Surface Book 3 has enough upgrades, more speed, more power, then maybe I'd go in... but with other brands coming out with newer chipsets, better screens, faster drives... there are other options for better prices.

      Hi Aaron,

Thanks for the thoughtful review. We are just as excited about the inclusion of the Nvidia GTX 1060 as you are. It opens up a lot of possibilities previously out of reach for a device with a 2-in-1 body. We will be sure to pass your feedback along to our team.

      All the best,

Surface book 2 is really great. It is a little more on the heavier side, but still very portable & versatile. The speed is great, love the touch screen and surface pen, great way to keep work flow active. The only thing i noticed that is a draw back is connecting to external displays. It surly supports two displays, however i do notice a delay when moving windows back and forth. Resolution seems to be quite off & refresh rates are low. This issue for me can certainly stem from using older generation monitors (2008-2010) so it may not be the case with new gen monitors I will certainly give that a shot, but overall a great laptop!

Needed a laptop for a new adventure I started. Needed something with ability to draw and edit on the fly and have laptop abilities. Still figuring out how to work a lot of the features but so far I love this thing. It is a bit expensive but its a quality product. Keyboard is phenomenal. I used the natural keyboards so wasn't sure how I was going to do going to a laptop style. But no cramped at all, keys are very responsive with positive feed back. Mouse pad is very large and accommodating. Videos are crisp and clean. I don't have anything negative about it. After more usage I will post again if thoughts change.

    Wasn't what I wanted, but...

I had previously purchased a Surface Pro 1. It finally went belly-up, brick, when the Surface Pro 4 came out. I picked up the Surface Pro 4 and a year so in found that I had a dead pixel. I returned the Surface Pro 4 to Best Buy to get it fixed or replaced or whatever they decided to do based on the extended warranty. My only beef is that apparently no one likes the big machines. They didn't have a Surface Pro 4 of the same size as mine nor they did to have one bigger. I was left to look for something else. I was sworn against the Surface Book when it first came out but in all reality it was about all that was left viable for me that day. I picked up the Surface Book 2 15in and it does fine.

This is the perfect laptop for any digital artist, as an animator/motion designer I really needed something that wasn’t just powerful enough to handle the heavy programs I use, but something that would allow me to fully create whether it be drawing/sketching on the screen or doing some 3D modeling on Maya. It works. I’ve had no issues, and I would recommend for someone in a similar field. One thing I do notice is that the battery life isn’t exactly what everyone raves about. But I’m going to assume it’s because of the type of programs I use.

    I couldn't turn it ON

Purchased a brand new one on 04/28/2018 . I came back to my house and tried to set it up but the laptop refused to turn on. I tried re-starting it multiple times by long pressing the turn ON/OFF key + Volume Up key but nothing happened . The laptop got overheated when it turned on finally and also the screen froze for like an hour . I took it to the nearby BestBuy store on the same day and yet to receive my new one . I just hope it works and doesn't endup like the last one. I never really expected this from a laptop which is worth $2300 approx. I can provide more details of my purchase if needed .

As a freelance artist and 3D designer the Surface Book 2 gives me the freedom I was looking for to get myself unchained from the office. Not only is it powerful enough to run all of my graphic design software including memory draining 3D packages but it is so ergonomically diverse that I can use it in any situation. I would like to see more support for the surface pen which can be glitchy but still very useable. I thought I would miss my old Wacom tablet but the surface pen's shortcomings are made up by the portability of not having to plug in an extra peripheral.

    Vastly improved 15”

Have waited for a larger size device that was stilll compact, lightweight and offered versatility. The 15” screen size has been a good fit. The performance and speed is amazingly good as I do a lot of HD photo and video processing. Screen clarity and color replication is great. The keyboard and touchpad are responsive. The 2 and 1 features work well for presentations. Battery life is super long when attached to the base - just okay when just a tablet. The 15” model is top heavy when sitting in certain positions and does tip over. I do wish there were cases for the 15” by UG but they only make the 13”? Happy with the upgrade purchase.
