Customers are saying

Customers enjoy the Surface Book 2-in-1's beautiful screen, ease of use, lightweight design, and solid performance. Many appreciate its portability and sleek aesthetics, although some experienced issues with the keyboard and battery life. The high price point was also a recurring concern for some buyers. While most found the device to be a worthwhile investment, potential buyers should be aware of these potential drawbacks.

First off yes this is not a perfect laptop or tablet. I would say it is the best 2 in one available on the market right now. As someone who just upgraded from a Dell Venue 11 I'm definitely pleased with the surface book! There are a few quirks however that you'll have to be aware of before you purchase. Cons 1.Plugging in USB drives can be troublesome as the SB is so thin. I would recommend putting something under the keyboard to prop it up so it wont rest on the usb device or dislodge ports (or only insert thin usb devices). 2.Disconnecting tablet can be a bit weird and you might be too cautious at first but it later becomes second nature. Those are my two main negatives about this product otherwise I'm completely satisfied and it runs like a champ! The GPU in the keyboard is somewhere between a 940m and 950m 1gb vram ddr5 so it can handle games on mid settings at lower resolutions fairly well. Typing is easy once you adjust to the keyboard. I'm officially a Surface fanboy.

First time boot up issue: If you get an "Other User" login the first time you turn on your computer, hold the Power and +Volume buttons at the same time for 15 seconds to reset. The normal setup process should come up after that. Recommend buying power cord extension: The power cord is stupidly short. It's 5 feet from the adapter block to the connector but 21 inches from the block to the plug. That sounds like plenty but it's not. Shop for a "2-slot non-polarized power cord" that you'll be able to plug into the adapter block in place of the 21-inch cord. I got a 6 foot one for $4. Positions/detaching: I thought the fact that it doesn't flip back 180 degrees would bother me because sometimes when I'm using a laptop in bed I might have to extend that far, but it's worked out fine. Although I prefer the fluidity other 2-in-1s provide in converting from laptop to tablet all in one motion, the surface design isn't a deal breaker for me since I'm so happy with it overall. It's still easy and quick to convert from one to the other. If you fully detach the tablet from the keyboard, you can still plug the power cord directly into the tablet but you do lose access to the other ports (e.g., usb, sd). Speed: Wow this thing is fast. It's a solid state drive so it boots up in a flash, downloads programs faster than the first laptop I tried, and I never hear it thinking. Only sound I hear is sometimes the fan if I'm using a power intensive program, and it's a very quiet fan at that. I first purchased another company's 2-in-1 that has the same specs except it didn't have a solid state drive. It was much slower than I expected and always seemed to be churning. Pen: Comes with a magnetized pen that sticks to the side of the tablet. It makes for very precise writing. You can write like you normally would (with side of hand pressed against screen), and it even looks like my own hand-writing. I drafted up this review first by handwriting in OneNote. Gaming: I installed Skyrim and it played great. Haven't tried MMOs or newer games though that are more resource and graphics intensive. Apps: Wish it had the volume that Google Play Store does, but that will hopefully improve since Microsoft has supposedly made it easier for developers to program for Windows 10. Overall: Really delighted with my purchase. I had gotten a different 2-in-1 but just wasn't completely in love with it. I switched for this one and so glad I did. Extremely happy. It's not for everyone and it's not perfect - I don't think any laptop will be - but I have no regrets.

Innovative Design and Overall Good Product

I read a comment by Tera and thought I’d offer this information. I purchased the same model of Surface Book (i7/256 GB/8 GB RAM/dGPU) and had the same experience upon start-up. The unit was DOA for battery charge and after plugging in the AC adapter it booted directly to the logon screen asking for User ID and Password. Not what should have occurred as it should have booted to the initial setup screen. Coincidently, mine came from BB as well. As the unit was perfectly sealed I attributed the boot error to a random QC check performed at the MS production facility. The problem being…after performing the check they failed to perform a factory reset. The unit should have been set aside and scheduled for reset and afterwards either placed back in production or held as inventory for authorized replacement(s). Microsoft IMO is the sole culprit to blame in this instance. BB could not re-seal the unit (had it been opened by them) in the flawless pristine fashion as was the case apparently with my unit and that of Tera’s. Unfortunately, as per online MS documentation the reset can take an hour or two to complete. My approximate wait time was 1.25 hours. After the reset I was able to setup the unit as normal. Also, a MS account is required for any type of customer support. It appears to be the only way MS can document service, trouble-shooting and MS in-store/online purchases made after the original hardware purchase. I found that setting up an [email protected] is the best way to proceed. I highly recommend that you purchase the MS Complete Care or BB Geek Squad Protection. I had a SP3 that developed screen flicker problems (just prior to the end of the 1 year warranty) and with having the MS Complete Care the unit was replaced by the local MS Store. If you don’t live near a local MS Store or authorized service center the process may take longer as you’ll have to send the unit in for evaluation. Shipping however is covered. FYI, I purchased MS Complete Care for my Surface Book mainly because free phone Tech support (including that for the OS) comes with. Technical support included with the standard one year MS warranty expires after 90 days. I personally like the design (including the gap) of the Surface Book. Overall given that this is a Gen 1 product (and having the MS Complete Care) I feel at ease to keep the unit and allow MS time to work out the bugs. Heck...some of the bugs are held in common with the new SP4 which is a mature Gen 4 product. In the interest of full disclosure I have several Mac Books…while great products…they aren’t perfect. Apple has just been doing it longer than MS when it comes to hardware design and manufacture. FYI, I always purchase AppleCare. One last point…many have complained about releasing the tablet from the base as being somewhat awkward. There are practical reasons why the disengage process of the tablet from the keyboard is not a “snatch & go” and will not release under certain conditions. I can’t go into all of them as it would take too long to cover each scenario. There is online information regarding how and when to disengage the tablet from the keyboard here’s the link: https://www.microsoft.com/surface/en-us/support/getting-started/get-started-with-surface-book?os=windows-10#accordian-2 I suggest (as I did) going to a BB or MS Store and playing with a demo model to get the feel of releasing and re-joining the tablet and base. The MS Store rep instructed me as follows: 1.Lightly grip the display in the upper left corner with your left hand 2. Press the release button with your right finger (of choice) 3.You’ll feel a light vibration in your left hand in addition to the visual in the lower right corner of the screen indicating that the tablet can be removed. 4. Using your left hand lift the screen at a 45 degree angle toward the right and roll the tablet off its connectors 5. To replace the screen …use both hands to positon the tablet over the connectors at an angle that compliments the position of the Hinge. 6. Let the magnets do the work of guiding the tablet back into positon instead of using force to reconnect it (with practice you’ll be able to perform this one-handed) Also, when the Discrete GPU is engaged the tablet will not release. Think of it as placing your car in reverse while in drive before coming to a stop. You can do it…but the end result will most likely be a hefty transmission repair bill. In conclusion Microsoft needs to tighten the screws regarding their QC process (i.e. DOA battery and not booting to setup screen). The bugs being experience IMO are typical for a new release product as not every possible firm/hardware conflict scenario can be produced in a controlled environment. We as consumers use our products in ways that no one can anticipate and quite often it’s because we don’t read the instructions. Luckily the majority of incompatibility issues can be resolved via update once they have been identified. I don’t think anyone will deny that the unit is well built. Like it or not you must agree that the fulcrum hinge and muscle wire are design innovations. As I typically buy and sell I’ll probably get the Gen 2 product assuming this Gen 1 has enough acceptance (purchases) to justify MS not killing the Surface Book line. Good luck with your Surface Book and enjoy.

This seems like it would be a great computer but kept having issues with the connection to the screen, it kept flickering as if there was a short or bad connection. Also, the mousepad seemed to not be very responsive. I wanted to love this laptop so much but with the amount of money spent I had to return it!
