    Well built and gorgeous notebook

I have spent a few days with this laptop and I must say that it is a gorgeous laptop. The surface laptop 2 is the perfect laptop for most people. It is a great device for everyday use to work in MS Office, check email, webs surfing and some moderate video or photo editing. I purchased this laptop for my work needs and it covers all areas that I need it for. I has the SP6 and while I loved that device, this was the better fit for me. I loved the experience that I had with the surface pro 6, it was fast, light, portable and versitile. However, when I removed it from my 27" HP monitor, it showed its one real drawback. The screen size! The screen is gorgeous and amazing to look at, however, when using MS Office the lack of screen size makes everyday use a bit challenging. I needed something that was just a portable as the SP6 and offered the same gorgeous display in an elegant design. That is where the Surface Laptop 2 comes in. I love the 3:2 aspect ratio screen and the 13" is perfect when wanting to work at a coffee shop on the couch. You just get so much more viewing area and that to me was enough to make the switch to the Surface Laptop 2. The performance is the same as the SP6 and I have experienced slightly better battery life with the SL2. The alcantara keyboard is holding up well, although this is something that I am going to be very cautious about since I purchased the silver model. I just loved the color and design on this color SL2 over the black, blue and burgundy. Only time will tell how the alcantara will hold up and from my extensive reviews, it should hold up just fine. The typing experience on the SL2 is just far better then what I was experiencing on the SP6. The keyboard is solid and has great key travel, it feels just well build and makes sending emails and using MS Office just a joy. I did like the SP6 type cover, although after using it for over two weeks, I just hated the hollow sound that keyboard made. I am always on the phone and my clients could hear me typing when I was taking notes. It is a small annoyance, but enough for me to consider the SL2 typing experience. The speakers are also a huge plus on the SL2. They are LOUD!! Sound amazing and I find myself playing music on here more than on any other device I have (bluetooth speaker or iphone). So far, I am incredibly happy with my purchase of the SL2 laptop. I am looking forward to using it extensively for work and personal use. Another reason why I went with the SL2 over the SP6 was that I was hearing rumors that the SP6 was going to get a major refresh in 2019. I could see that happening as the form factor of the surface pro has been mainly unchanged for a number of years now. The SP6 could use thinner bezels, updated ports and a slightly better typecover/typing experience. With that said, it was another reason for me to switch to the SL2 over the SP6. I will look to buy a new Surface Pro device once it is refreshed as I loved it that much, but for right now in 2018, the SL2 just made more sense for me. I can't wait to see what else Microsoft has up its sleeve in 2019.

    Isolated incident or common defect?

I work in and IT and fix and build computers for a living. This is the first Windows 10 device that I have seen that has inexplicable high memory usage. 8GB of RAM is enough to run nearly anything on Windows 10, yet the Surface Laptop 2 I purchased consistently sits at 90%+ memory usage without anything open or running. It's unbelievable really. I have spent the last 3 days trying to figure out what is using nearly all the memory on the computer and I have not been able to. It is extremely perplexing. I have even gone as far as wiping the hard drive and reinstalling Windows 10 from scratch and the issue persists. I ran a memory tests and they passed, so it's not faulty memory. I also used numerous RAM and memory analysis applications with no tangible results. I am now being forced to return this to get something else. I've never seen a computer eat up memory and then crash like this one, without any explanation. It seems the longer it sits, the more memory it uses. If I let it sit for a few hours, the memory usage goes up to 90%+ and never comes down until a reboot, but then the cycle starts all over again. I am hoping I most likely received a defective device, but I am not willing to take the risk and get another. I will have to find something else, which sucks, because the design of the Surface Laptop 2 is nice.

I purchased this for work. I needed something light and portable. I was very happy with the specs for the price. I wanted something that was powerful enough that I wouldn't feel like I was sacrificing anything just to get an ultrabook. The screen is great, it's bright enough for my usage and I find the resolution just fine. The aspect ratio is great for productivity. I do enjoy typing on the keyboard. It's trackpad is good, nowhere near as good as a Macbook Pro; but that's a given. The backlight is excellent and the keys travel is much more satisfying than the newer Macbook Pro's. The big reason for this purchase is the quad core processor. I don't need lots of power for daily use but it's nice to have. 128gb might be too small for some but for me it's just right. I do wish it had an SD card slot like the Surface Pro but I knew that before buying and could always store anything on an external drive. The battery life is great. I get above 8-9 hours of usage out of it. I love Windows Hello. It's fast and nice to not have to type a password. This computer isn't well suited as a touch screen device. If that is important to you then the Surface Pro is a better option. I don't use the touchscreen and don't plan on using it anytime soon. It works and is functional but since this a traditional laptop, it's not ideal for using it as you would a tablet or phone. Lastly this is not recommended for anyone wanting to game on it. It's got an Intel graphics card and would probably only play the least graphic intensive games. You could probably play Fortnite at a very low resolution and with all the settings set to low and still only get 15-20fps. For the price I paid $899 I am very happy. It's well made and has just the right amount of specs for my liking. I wanted a light and powerful laptop that I can take anywhere and not have to be tethered to an outlet. Plus the face that it's a Microsoft device and not a third party there is no bloatware. If you need Windows 10 Pro or really want to utilize the touch screen, I recommend the Surface Pro 6. For me this is what I wanted and needed and nothing else.

I bought this laptop 3 days ago in place of a MacBook Pro 2018 because I was afraid of the keyboard failure on a $1,500+ laptop. FIRST ARE THE ISSUES THEN THE GOOD STUFF; Constant lag, freezing, rebooting, and loss of work. This laptop suffers from some serious lag and freezing issues in general. However the big issues are that when you close the lid to put the laptop to sleep, sometimes it just doesn't wake up. I had to hold the power button in a good 30 seconds before it rebooted and then it was fine for a bit until the following occurred. Next up I would sometimes open it from sleep, it would turn on, and then out of nowhere it would lag, freeze, and give me a blue screen about it sending the error report to Microsoft. Not something that should be happening on a 3 day old laptop when my 4 year old laptop has no such problems. And FINALLY sometimes you'll close the lid and walk away for a bit, come back, open it up, and all of the programs you just had open suddenly vanished without a trace. Not ideal for people in school who close their laptops mid project... THE GOOD: This laptop feels VERY premium and nice to hold in the hand, excellent speakers (probably the best out of any surface product), and a great trackpad/keyboard. Battery life was average, I expected better. The included picture is actually one from someone else on Reddit who had the same issue as me (https://www.reddit.com/r/Surface/comments/b3nb6d/blue_screen_annoying_my_surface_laptop_keeps/ej5wfuz/) and we both received the same error.

    Junk!

I was between a rock and a hard place because my computer crashed (it was fried) and I needed an immediate replacement (for work). So, I purchased this computer from Best Buy today at the advice of the salesperson. I brought it home, and began the set up process. It seemed like a good one and I really liked the feel of the computer. But, then within 20 minutes the computer froze. I forgave it that one time, but after it froze a second time and a third time and fourth time, all within the first 2 hours, I knew this was junk. Not only did it freeze but the screen would blink on and off. At one point the computer stopped responding and a screen message popped up saying "your PC has ran into a problem and needs to restart. We're collecting some error info, and then we'll restart". But, while they were "collecting info" the computer gave off this loud shrill high pitched noise. I was unable to mute or shut the computer down. I had to listen to the high pitch noise for over 60 seconds. I mean, what the heck! This is truly the junkiest computer that I have ever purchased (and Lord knows I have purchased many... at least 20) in my lifetime. It is such a disappointment too, because I really liked the look of this computer. Although I will say, it did feel cheap. The keys were somewhat flimsy and a few of them made this creaking noise when pressed (I know, weird huh? Maybe they needed to be oiled!). The bottom line is this- don't waste your money or your time.

I am replacing my 2015 Lenovo Edge 15. That and my other HP made me hate touch in a laptop. The computer was huge, unwieldy, and made my back hurt. That is to say that whatever laptop I got, I ultimately was going to be satisfied. Size wise, I didn't want to go to extremes like my other laptop choices (15 inch and 11 inch screens) I settled that 13.5 would be big enough to see, but portable enough for a college student. All this is to say, if you are in a similar situation as me, and simply want a laptop that will serve all basic purposes, this will do the job. I wanted to get a MacBook, but after the unreliability of the keyboards and discomfort of them, I am so glad I got this one. If you want an un-problematic, durable, best of all world's device, I would recommend this one in a heartbeat. I got platinum. Beautiful color. It will show scratches, and I stained the alcantara every so subtly with buffalo sauce. I'm sure that black and other colors won't stain. I don't regret getting the classic platinum though. There are many Surface Laptop 2 skins online to protect against scratches as well. I believe that I covered most bases with my review. Overall it is a recommend!

Pros: -Fast -Lightweight -Touch screen (more useful than I thought it would be) without being a 2-in-1 (something I dislike) -Base material is actually really cool and softer on wrists/palms Cons: Only thing I've noticed is I don't like the way the track pad feels but that is a very personal preference, I recommend trying it out for yourself in store I had gone through three macbooks in my life and actually bought my fourth before speaking with some friends and returning it. I went in to Best Buy to look at Chromebooks and ended up speaking with a sales associate who made this rec after listening to my needs. I mainly use the internet but still need Windows suite sometimes and I occasionally like to edit photos and videos where I prefer to use a program instead of just an app. This laptop was a great alternative to the mac. In store I was able to purchase an "open box" version that was basically new and got a great discount!

Bought this for my fiancee for a Master's program she's doing since her old one finally bit the dust. This is a really smooth and well balanced laptop. The keys feel really nice, the screen is absolutely gorgeous, the laptop itself is really light and easy to handle. The Alcantera cover is super soft and nice to the touch, and the trackpad is large which I personally enjoy. The specs for this are really good for someone who needs power but isnt a power user. 8GB of RAM really is what most people need for the basics and can run most programs out there. The Intel i5 gets the job done quick but every now and again has some stuttering issues when you switch between programs, if you have a bunch of them running at once, or if you have a bunch of Google Chrome tabs open at once as well. So far, there haven't been anything that I've noticed with this laptop that would give me pause or make me not recommend it to someone.

I really like this device that's why i made this purchase, actually 2 of them but as soon as i recieved it was disappointing when i paid more then 1000 dollars for each still didn't get windows 10 pro, overall device is good i like windows 10 operating system, but i am not happy that it comes with windows 10 home edition, when my sister bought surface laptop she had windows pro, that was the reason i thought it would be good purchase for me and my wife but Microsoft wants to take more money from us in order to provide their top notch operating system which was the selling point. Its been a week, my wife return her device because apple had better alternative. I am still giving it a try but not sure if i stay with windows 10 home edition with basic options, i bought Microsoft device thought ms office and operating system should be top notch but Microsoft is being greedy. Sorry if you are selling good hardware you need to provide good operating system to utilize this device as well.

      Hi there,

Thanks for taking the time to reach out. We are sorry to hear you're not fully enjoying all Windows 10 has to offer. We work hard to listen to our customers needs. We have found that most of our customers enjoy the benefits Windows 10 Home Edition has to offer, which is why we have implemented it into Surface Laptop 2.

While your device comes with Windows 10 Home Edition, you can always upgrade to Windows 10 Pro for a fee, which is probably what your sister had previously done with her device. The Surface 2 is a great overall laptop. It's i5 is powerful enough to match the business-class laptops in it's category. But it's highres touchscreen make it stand out from more expensive laptops. The keyboard and mouse make it easy to type fast and be productive. The only asks from Microsoft would be to somehow fit a USB-C, an SD-type card slot, and an HDMI port. Another ask would be to engineer the screen to rotate all the way around like the Lenovo Yoga. And lastly, at least an option to choose between the current palm rest material or the commonplace aluminum surface like a MacBook. Maybe in the Surface 3? All around great computer, and BestBuy seems to always have the best sales on their PCs.

I bought this for school and it is definitely worth! I love the how sleek and compact it is, along with how different it is with the material it is made of (although I sometimes get cautious about my fingerprints staining or anything else that may not wipe off). It is touchscreen as well, works fast, backlight keyboard, and there’s nothing confusing about to how to use. The clicking of the touchpad (actually pressing on it) is not weird either, like some laptops that feel like the whole pad is coming down with it. I am very particular about my keyboard buttons too (no stiffness or being really flat) so I am glad that was not an issue to the perfect laptop.

This laptop is an excellent laptop with amazing build quality. It houses an excellent SSD and 8th generation I5 processor. It is lightning fast and feels and looks great. The alcantara fabric is comforting and feels great after long hours of use. This is an excellent computer that serves its purpose and goes above and beyond. The only drawback to this computer are the lack of PORTS! It has one usb type A, an MiniDisplay port, and a surface proprietary port. This forces you to buy an extra device to add more ports which is counter-intuitive to having a laptop and portability. Overall this is a great laptop and I will buy the next one when it comes out.

I primarily use this laptop for studying, surfing the internet, and watching videos. I occasionally play a few games on it. So far, it has run Skyrim on decent settings. I would not advise playing a heavily modded game or with the settings on ultra, but it ran just fine for what I wanted. I also have played a bit of minecraft on it, and noticed no hiccups. I love how thin this computer is, it fits in any size bag easily, and is very lightweight. It is also small enough to comfortably fit on a desk, but large enough to not feel like a tiny laptop.

I had bought this laptop for nursing school hoping for a reliable laptop. I loved it initially until I began setting up the laptop. After an hour of setting it up i wasn’t able to log into the laptop at all. It would state “Your PIN is no longer available due to a change in security settings." There was no way for me to get back into the laptop. I was on the phone with Microsoft for another hour to figure how to restart laptop. Nothing could be done. Once that happens you have no way of getting back into the laptop. I had to return the laptop after one hour of using it. Such a waste of time and money unfortunately.

I am an engineering student at UTA. I definitely recommend this laptop to another student. The base laptop is enough for college study and run student software. the big concern is about the Price which is so high for students and higher tag price for the high storage. it is expensive to buy w/ the bigger storage. the advantage is very light, I like the trackpad and keyboard. As I say, it is just enough for study. Gaming or extensive software will not be effective on this laptop. I am thinking about to exchange to get higher spec if necessary. 128gb is too small when i have multiple softwares and need room to store

I am very unhappy that the surface one comes with Windows pro and on this one I have to pay extra, it makes literally no sense as a consumer to pay for something that the first Gen has. When I reached out to Microsoft and after an hour of basically nothing they just confirmed that I would have to pay for which I could gather my self. I am usually an Apple user so far I am unimpressed with the ports as well as. I am still within my 14 days and I am really considering doing an exchange for a mac instead. The surface laptop has beautiful display its touch screen and some nice features but for the price I feel like it should be more innovated.... I don't know that I would recommend it to a friend.

I’m not very knowledgeable on computers but if you need a computer for school this one is perfect. I didn’t even realize when I bought it that it was a touch screen, it’s been really useful to just be able to zoom in on things with your fingers. The face recognition is crazy like I could be wearing a hood and flash my face for 2 seconds and it’ll still recognize me and unlock. It’s a little bit heavy but it’s good for taking in your bag to the library and such since it fits in most bags. Another very useful thing is the charger, which has a magnet which makes it easier to plug in.

The Surface Laptop 2 is a great device. Pros - Bright, clear and responsive touchscreen with pen input - Very fast - Windows Hello makes signing in very quick - Computer boots up in mere seconds - All day battery life Cons - The only con I have come across is lack of USB-C. With that said I'm not really sure that is much of a con at this point though. My experience with other computers that use USB-C has been mixed. Not sure the technology is ready for primetime. If your primary purpose for a laptop is not gaming, then this is the ideal choice.

I requested Geek Squad to set up my laptop but I think I would have needed Geek Squad to set up my laptop regardless of the brand I bought. The touch-screen is desirable and allows users an additional way to navigate an interface or select options on the screen. The device is also very light weight. Typing and composing documents is my primary reason for buying this laptop. I suppose one disadvantage is the battery is depleted quickly. However, that is an insignificant disadvantage.

I would recommend this to a friend

      Hi Danny!

Thank you so much for the wonderful review! We're happy to see that you are enjoying your Surface Laptop 2. We designed the device to be super easy to pick up and use, while still powerful enough to handle anything that you can throw at it, and it's great to see successes like this. Thanks again!

      Cheers,

The worst battery life I've ever had on a laptop. I had a full charge and after 3 hours I had 33% left. Only had computer for 6 weeks. The resolution is fantastic, but I'm not using it for games or movies. I am a student and writing papers, taking webcam proctored tests and web surfing is all I needed it for. My cheap Chromebook which was $500 less has a longer battery life than this. Wish I could return it but Best Buy has the worst return policy also. Not happy at all with this purchase. Waste of money to be honest
