I had a Surface Pro 3 for years, and after an unfortunate incident involving an attempt to bring in ALL of the groceries and my laptop bag at once, let's just say that I need a replacement. I went and grabbed the Surface Laptop 2 (in black, because of course) and things were good. The Surface Pro 3 had started having an odd issue where the charger would be plugged in but it may or may not be charging. 3 weeks in with the Surface Laptop 2, and I started seeing a similar behavior. I ended up returning that one for another laptop but I really liked this unit.

I got this for work and it's very nice. I like the feel of it-kind of like suede. Works fine. Battery holds a charge well-hasn't gone dead and I'm not consistent with charging it. The cobalt blue color is attractive

No complaints about this slim laptop. In love with keyboard and mouse pad. Materials are top notch on this laptop, you feel the quality as soon you touch/ open the laptop. Good job Microsoft! Cons: needs Type c outlet/charger

I have only had this laptop for about a week or so and I have to say it is fantastic! I originally had a 14 HP pavilion x360 and I decided to upgrade after only two years because the fan noise was horrible!!! This laptop is unbelievably quiet, it does not get hot, and the battery life is pretty good! Also is is very light and compact so it is a great MacBook Air alternative. It is also very comfortable to type on. My only issue with the laptop so far is the charger. I am not used to having a magnetic charger and it does seem flimsy so I get a little nervous every time I remove the charger. I have read some reviews online and customers have warned about charging issues so beware and take care when plugging and removing the charger. Overall great product!

I've had this laptop for a couple weeks now and absolutely love it. I love the touch screen feature, the keyboard, and it's a very aesthetically pleasing laptop. I used to have a 2015 Macbook Air and I'm really happy with the switch. My two complaints are the battery life. Mine only lasts me about 8 hours just using the internet and Microsoft programs at school. My Macbook used to last a couple days without a charge, so that was a bit of a downer. My other complaint is the "T" key on mine constantly gets stuck. It's not a huge deal, but it really bothers me sometimes when I'm trying to type papers. Overall, I'm really happy with it. I do think it's a little overpriced though.

A Great Laptop and Macbook Air Alternative

Overall this is one great laptop, and an excellent alternative to the MacBook Air or perfect computer for a previous Mac user. My rating is 4.5/5. My Model - Surface Laptop 2, 8GB Ram, 256GB Storage, Core i5 (8th Generation), Matte Black. My background is that I'm a previous Mac user. My last laptop was a 2013 MacBook Air and while I would've loved a new MacBook Air (2018), the keyboard reliability issues were a deal breaker for me, and luckily I'm skilled in both Windows and Mac. Build Quality/Design - Excellent build quality, close to Apple's Macs, although the Macs do feel the slightest bit sturdier, but compared to an HP, Lenovo, Dell or any other windows laptop, this is at the top of the list. An option for metal instead of alcantara would've been nice, but take good care and be a little more careful (and don't get the silver model) and the alcantara should wear well. The look is really nice too, they definitely took inspiration from the MacBooks but instead added a more straight edged design theme overall, and the whole product looks and feels high quality. I really like the inclusion of multiple different colors. I chose the Matte Black due to it being on sale while others weren't, but the Burgundy also looks great, and I love how bright and vivid the Cobalt Blue is. While the Silver presents a more MacBook-like look, I would not go for that one, as the alcantara wears better over time in darker colors. The laptop has a good heft to it without feeling heavy, and is easily portable while offering great lap-ability (something the traditional Surface computers (which are really just tablets) can't really do). Screen - An excellent screen, at 13.5 inches the size is perfect for most, and colors look great, while the 3:2 aspect ratio is great for viewing documents and web-pages as there's more vertical space available. The screen can also be used as a touchscreen (if you're into that) but overall very good and comparable to most current laptops. Bezels aren't the smallest or the thickest, but overall good and a nice in-between. Ports/Charging - Here's the mixed bag for the laptop that most users/perspective buyers find fault with. One USB-A, a Mini-Display Port (Do people still use these anymore? @@@@@@@ and a a headphone jack, that's it. While I don't use any USB-C devices or need a port for them, I can see how many would be upset by this as USB-C offers great versatility and power. The USB-A port is a nice convenience, especially when sharing documents with other computers/users, but the mini-display port should have definitely been a USB-C port instead to be more useful. I can't remember the last time I used a mini-display port to be honest and doubt many know what it really is. Charging is very similar to Apple's MagSafe 1 in which its magnetic. The charger does seem a little flimsy but the design is similar to Apple in which it will disconnect if stepped on adding a feeling of security. I do wish it were on the left side of the computer though, but that's just a personal preference. Keyboard/Trackpad - The keyboard is the one thing previous or current Mac owners will fall in love with. Unlike current Apple keyboards, the keys feel great and are full of excellent travel and feel, and good back-lighting. The keystroke is predictable and overall its super easy to type on this computer unlike the new Macs for some users. The trackpad is a typical Windows trackpad, in that its overall precise and the size is average, but Apple's current trackpads are still the benchmark in that they can be clicked anywhere and at any firmness of clicking while offering different levels of feedback. Gestures and scrolling do feel a little more awkward and less smooth than on a Mac, but that's mainly due to Windows and not the computer itself. The inclusion of an FN on/off key is genius as I tend to prefer to use the FN keys for buttons like volume, playback and brightness, etc. but when needing them for actual FN functions (like f1, f2, etc.) its really convenient. Software - Windows 10 is probably getting close to Windows 7 levels of perfection, at least in my opinion. When I got my MacBook Air, I remember that the disaster of Windows 8 had just been released, and that was one defining factor of why I went for the Mac. Thankfully the start screen isn't an entire page but just a menu again, and navigating the file system has been easy for me. I haven't found much fault with Windows 10 other than the annoying automatic updates. Mac users likely will need more time to adjust to a new OS, but overall it isn't too difficult to use or adjust to. Price - Like a MacBook the price of the Surface Laptop is high. Truthfully I would not recommend ever paying the full $1299 my model costs, but instead wait until a sale comes around and pick up the device much cheaper, like I did, paying $999, instead of the full retail price of $1299. Those deals while not too frequent, make the pricing easier to swallow, and make you feel better about yourself and your wallet. Overall this laptop is truly great, with its superb build quality and design, amazingly predictable and easy keyboard and other little touches, not only making it a great choice for many Window's users, but also any Mac users wanting/needing to switch and find something a little reminiscent of their MacBook.

Not worth your time or money

Please please do not buy this laptop, especially if you are a student. I bought this laptop in September 2018 as I was beginning graduate school. I went in for a Mac but let the sales associate convince me to get this instead. After only 4 months of having it, I began to have trouble with the power supply. It would not charge consistently. I noticed this as the LED light would not turn on. In January 2019, it would not charge at all anymore. I reached out to Microsoft Surface support and was basically told that it was probably my fault and that I was probably bending the power cord (which I wasn't). The sent me a new charger which I received February 8, 2019. By February 16th, 2019 this new power supply stopped working as well. It's very difficult for me to believe that it is possible that I ruined a power supply in 8 days. I initially emailed the support member that had assisted me in the case but he never responded. I contacted surface support again by telephone today. They were very dismissive and basically told me they would send me a new power supply in 4-5 days and that if that one didn't work then they might consider that the problem is with the laptop. When I expressed my concerns and the fact that I was falling behind on school work, they brushed me off and just said " oh we will keep an eye out and follow up." I would have believed them if it wasn't for my previous experience. Now I am behind on school work and can do nothing but wait and hope that the new power supply works. I urge any students to stay clear of surface laptops. It's not worth the added stress. For $1200, you can get a better computer. I wish I hadn't thrown my money away.
