Although this was a gift, I have used it (model 512 GB storage) and is very nice. Very fast and includes Windows 11 op system which seems very good and designed for today's user's needing efficient computer and phone interfaces with room for customization. The hardware seems well made with a bright screen and has sufficient features including optional stylus for drawing and annotating on screen.

I wanted a fast laptop and the Microsoft Surface 4 delivered. I also purchased the Surface 2 docking station, two new Asus monitors, and a wireless keyboard and mouse. It’s awesome. I love having everything in one place and I can simply unplug the laptop and go mobile. Best Buy was very helpful in my transition from an old HP desktop to my new set up. I am very pleased.

I was skeptical about the AMD processor, but there are no bottlenecks I can see; I use Photoshop and Illustrator and the typical office applications. This surface handled them all flawlessly, the look is sleek, and the black looks topshelf; it weighs almost nothing, the keys are just the right size the camera is a little sensitive to light but a competent zoom meeting camera.

Full disclosure - I'm a Mac guy, but I purchased this because I had an immediate need for a 15-16" laptop and didn't want to wait for Apple to come out with an "M" version of the 16" Macbook Pro. That said, this is a solid machine and a good value. Strong points are: 1) Pleasing design. Very solid with little screen flex. 2) Excellent display. Most laptops at this price point have 1920x1080 resolution. The Surface Laptop bridges the gap between standard HD and UHD+ with minimal cost penalty. 3) The Ryzen processor is more than adequate for my needs (email, multiple browser tabs, reasonably complex spreadsheets, light photo editing). 4) Good keyboard/key travel. I don't see any deal-breaker negatives, but rather a few weaknesses: 1) The touchpad is about as good as I've used on any Windows PC, but does not compare favorably with Apple. Sensitivity is erratic across the width of the pad. 2) Weirdness in how it adapts screen brightness to ambient lighting. Too many adjustments with the slightest change in ambient. Yes, this can be disabled, but Macs do a much better job. 3) Would be nice to have Thunderbolt support for the USB-C ports. 4) User settings strewn all over the place in Settings, but that's a Windows issue not unique to this laptop. 5) Matte black finish is a major fingerprint magnet. Overall, a good, competitive machine.

This is an amazing laptop. First, I would like to talk about the packaging. I don’t normally pay so much attention to packaging but must say this is probably the best packaging of any product I have purchased in recent memory. The box comes shrink wrapped but the attention to detail is second to none. Most times you have to have a knife or other sharp object to peal away the shrink wrap risking damage to the box. Microsoft put a lot of thought into this packaging as they provide a pull tab to release and remove the shrink wrap eliminating the possibility of damage. The box itself is very heavy duty as well and built as well as the laptop itself. I can see why Microsoft put so much effort into making sure it doesn’t get damaged when removing the shrink wrap. Taking the Surface out of the box you immediately notice how well this is made. It appears and feels as though it was cut from a solid piece of aluminum. The setup was easy and fast. Once you turn on the laptop it guides you through the setup process. I used the available voice, keyboard and touch screen options during this setup so I could get a feel for how these options worked. I have been using a Gen 8 i5 desktop that I purchased last year and have all my files backed up to OneDrive. During the setup process for the Surface, it gives you the option to sync to the OneDrive. Once I did this all of my files ported to the new device. This was the easiest setup I have had. After setting up the laptop I decided to run some battery longevity tests. For the next 3 days I ran the following tests with these results. • With the Surface set for best battery performance, I ran the unit with just a screen saver running and achieved approximately 16.5 hours of battery life. • Again, set at best battery performance I ran a continuous loop of video and achieved approximately 11 hours of battery life. • I then changed to best performance and ran the same continuous video loop and achieved approximately 7 hours of battery life. After running all of these tests and running the battery down to 0% I recharged the battery which took approximately 2 hours to recharge. This laptop is fast. When compared to my i5 the startup is at least twice as fast and accessing files or opening streaming services is also faster. The Surface has a 15” screen that is a solid performer with solid blacks and although not a 4K display is more than sufficient for most uses. I agree with some other reviews regarding the bezel. I too like being able to open the laptop without touching the screen. And being that the unit is so dark you can hardly see the bezel. I am not usually a big fan of laptop keyboards but this one has a great feel and is very solid. I really like the 3-position backlight as I usually work in a darkened room. The track mouse is large and easy to use with a great touch. I remember when they used to imbed the little red button in the keyboard to serve as the mouse and it was a pain. There are 3 ports on the unit which include a USB-A, USB-C and head phone. I connected the USB-C to my recently acquired 27” 4K monitor and it allowed me to stream 4K HDR video without issue. This is a real bonus as I watch a lot of 4K HDR movies. I also used the USB-A port to connect my wireless keyboard and mouse when having my 4K monitor as my primary monitor. Worked great. I was really surprised at the performance of the built-in speakers. For such a small unit I could not see how they could get decent sound out of the speakers but was pleased with how they sounded. I ran several Dolby Amos sound demos through them and they sounded really good. Would probably not use them regularly for watching movies but they performed well. I connected my Bluetooth headphones and powered Bluetooth speakers to the unit and they worked flawlessly with the Surface. With the AMD Ryzen 7 CPU, 8GB of ram and 512GB SSD drive this Surface performs at an outstanding level. A 4K monitor and more ram would be nice but certainly not necessary for most anyone’s regular needs. I would highly recommend this Surface to anyone looking for a high-end laptop.
