I purchased the Microsoft Surface Go to take with me on my travels because it is smaller and lighter which is perfect for me. It allows me to keep up with my banking and bills. It is also very helpful when doing searches for the area that I’m at. It also works well for Zoom.

I have not been this excited about a laptop in a very long time. With a lot of the world working from home and kids doing online school I believe this laptop will be looked at by many as an all around affordable and premium device. Although this laptop is meant to be more affordable it is by no means any less premium in my opinion than many other devices. It does lack a few non major things which a cheaper price is most likely the cause.
I would like to start off talking about design. This is what puts this laptop over much of its competition. It has a mostly aluminum body minus the bottom which is made from plastic. This is a plus to me because it most likely makes it lighter and I worry less about it getting scratched easily. The keyboard and trackpad feel premium just like the higher end surface laptops. The only downside to the keyboard is that is not backlit. This is a huge disappointment because I feel like it something that is included on almost all laptops. The size and weight of this laptop shocked me when I took it out of the box. I did not expect it to be so slim and light. This is going to be a bonus for mobility. One of the most satisfying things is being able to open the lid without holding down on the keyboard. To me this makes it feel even more premium and although it is a small detail it is a much welcomed one.
The display on this device is also premium. The screen size is perfect in my opinion with high resolution. Even with the small size of this laptop it packs a nicely sized small bezel display. I was impressed by the brightness and the viewing angles. The aspect ration is much better than comparable 16:9 aspect rations. My only gripe about the display is that text is extremely small and although you can make it large it then makes it to big. This is not the end of the world and I would rather have more screen real estate anyway.
Ports and input are somewhat limited, but this is expected on any laptop that is on the market. It is nice to have a touch screen included at this price point. I am disappointed that you are not able to use surface pen with this device. One of the best features is the ability to charge it via the surface charge or any USB-C charger. This makes it more universal and the ability to charge off a power bank. The battery life is great and will allow it to be use all day mobile without being tied to an outlet. The two upper models of this laptop include a fingerprint reader. Although it does not have facial recognition, I like the fingerprint reader and it lights up when it is ready to be used. The camera and built in microphones have average but decent quality. This will be needed for anyone using it for video conferencing.
The last thing I would like to talk about is power and S mode. I am glad that Microsoft included an intel i5 processor. It does not feel underpowered by any means and was able to do any task I put it to. It can do light gaming etc. Obviously, it does have its limits but any basic task it can do without hesitation. Before I received the product, I had planned to switch it into regular Windows 10 Home rather than leaving it in S Mode. However, I decided to leave it in S mode for the time being because all the apps I plan to use on it can be downloaded from the Microsoft Store. I think that for older people or kids this is great because they have less risk of downloading something that will be harmful to the computer. Unless I need to download a program that is not included, I will leave it in S Mode. You can switch out of S mode, but it warns you cannot switch back.
Overall, I am impressed by this laptop. I believe that anyone looking for something portable, premium, and affordable this is the only option. This is going to be a great device for students or someone who doesn’t need a ton of power but just doing basic tasks. I would recommend at least getting the middle end one in order to get the fingerprint scanner, more memory, and better storage. However, if on a budget even the entry level model is going to be better than most laptops in the price range.

I love this little laptop, it’s perfect for me. I use this for zoom meetings with work, word documents, streaming videos, and surfing the web. I love the finger print log in option, the touch screen is also very convenient, especially for digitally signing documents. I love that I can talk to text my word documents if wanted. I honestly can not think of a single complaint so far. The lower price without sacrificing quality is amazing. I was originally going to purchase the Mac laptop, but after reading multiple reviews on that laptop and this laptop I decided to go with this one because the features were very similar, and some even better than the Mac laptop, at a significantly lower price. I love the look of it, and how light weight it is for when I need to bring it with me. I absolutely recommend this product.

Solid laptop. Screen is perfect size for what I need it for: web browsing, word, zoom, excel.
Touch screen is pretty cool, use it every now and then just to experience how cool it is.
Gets warm when I have too many things open, but not too bad.

A Good Ultraportable Laptop
|
Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
Microsoft broadened its line up of Surface computers with the latest Surface Laptop Go designed with form, function, and value in mind. It’s biggest features are its portability and modern style that eschews the traditional ultrabook widescreen for a more boxy 3:2 aspect ratio that works to separate itself from the crowded field of ultrabooks. The Surface Go succeeds in its sleek looks, attractive new colors, and its featherweight body, but gives up some to its competition in terms of features.
Before I continue further, I would like to state that I am part of the Best Buy Tech Insider Network program and received the Microsoft Surface Laptop Go from Best Buy in exchange for my honest, unbiased, review of the product. All the opinions and experiences are my own.
Here are some of the positive features of the Surface Laptop Go:
+Attractive Style and Colors: If this was a beauty contest, the Surface Laptop Go would win. Microsoft crafted the laptop with a smooth aluminum frame at the top and the edges, and soft curves at the corners and edges that feel comfortable to hold. The bottom of the laptop is plastic, but it doesn’t feel out of place and blends in nicely with the overall appeal of the laptop. It comes in three different color options Ice blue, Platinum, and Sandstone. I received the Sandstone colored one which has a hint of pink to it and attract a lot of positive attention.
+Featherweight and Portable: The Surface Laptop Go seems to almost defy gravity, weighing in at a mere 2.45 lbs. This is lighter than many ultraportables. Not only that, it measures only 8.10”x10.95” in width and length, smaller dimensions than a letter sized paper. The laptop is only around ⅝” in thickness. It is easy to throw in a bag and take it with you wherever you want.
+Good, but not outstanding battery life: Microsoft touts a single fully charged battery can power the laptop up to 13 hours of use. I never believe these claims and neither should you. 13 hours of battery is only achieved under certain conditions, settings, and usage. If you’re like me who uses the laptop continuously during a full 9 hour plus work or school day where you’re browsing the web with multiple tabs opened, conducting online meetings using the webcam and audio, using word processing documents and spreadsheets, and maybe even connected to a bluetooth device, then expect anywhere from 6-8 hour maximum of usage because that is what I got out of the battery depending on how I used the laptop. Keep that ac adapter close by.
+Quick boot up time: Goes without saying that laptops with solid state drives boot up fairly fast. It took less than 15 seconds for the Surface Laptop Go to boot up.
+Windows Hello Fingerprint reader on the power button: I really like signing into the laptop using the fingerprint reader which is ingeniously placed on the power button. You can register more than one fingerprint, say for example you want to log into the laptop using both the left or right index fingerprints.
+Screen is plenty bright: I couldn’t find on Microsoft’s technical specs how many nits of brightness the screen can get, so I did the next best thing and took the laptop outside in the bright midday sunlight and qualitatively tested it for everybody who read this far in the review. I turned the laptop to the brightest display setting and was relieved that I was able to still see the contents on the display clearly and with plenty of color in the bright sunlight. So for those of you who like to work with the laptop outdoors, rest assured you’ll be able to still see the contents on the display. It’s not the brightness that should concern you. It’s the amount of glare that will be reflecting off of the Surface Laptop Go’s glossy screen that you need to worry about when working outdoors.
+Touchscreen: Good to see that the Surface Laptop Go is equipped with a touchscreen for those times when I feel like I need to leave my fingerprints on it.
+10th gen Intel i5 processor, 8GB of RAM, integrated graphics: This is plenty for office type work, web browsing, and video streaming. Folks who are into gaming, do a lot of video or photo editing shouldn’t be looking at this laptop for those exclusive uses, but it doesn’t hurt for this community to consider this as a second laptop for the other uses when they don’t want to lug around a monster gaming machine.
+Fully dockable: Although it is marketed as a ultraportable laptop, don’t forget that you can also hook it up to a docking station with dual monitors. That is what I did, and the Surface Laptop Go runs perfectly fine. Increased my productivity and the laptop didn’t even slow down a bit running dual monitors, external keyboard/mouse, and other peripherals attached to the docking station.
+keyboard and trackpad: The keys are well spaced and have just the right amount of travel and feedback. I type a lot and didn’t get any fatigue from long hours of typing using the Surface Laptop Go keyboard. Same goes with the trackpad. The trackpad is large enough that I never felt like I needed more space, and my fingers glided smoothly across the trackpad surface. Tapping is also very responsive.
+720p webcam: I never bothered with webcams until the pandemic hit. Now having a webcam is essential for all those online video meetings. The webcam on the Surface Laptop Go is plenty clear and bright. The indicator lights up when the webcam is in use.
Here are some Cons of the Surface Laptop Go:
-Windows 10 in S Mode: The laptop is shipped with Windows 10 in S mode. I did not want to be tied down to using apps available only from the Microsoft Apps Store. The first thing I did was switch to Windows 10 Home. This is a personal choice.
-When the laptop is turned off and charging, there is no way to tell when it is fully charged. On many laptops there is usually an indicator light along the edge that either turns off or changes color when the laptop is fully charged. There is no battery charge indicator light on the Surface Laptop Go to notify me that it is fully charged. I don’t know whether to leave the laptop connected to the ac adapter or not.
-No back lit keyboard
-Screen resolution is less than 1080p.
-Proprietary Surface Connect charge port. Microsoft should use usb-c port for charging.
-The only available ports are 1 usb-c and 1 usb-a.
-No micro SD card slot.
-No path for upgrading the laptop. You’re stuck with 256gb of storage and 8GB of RAM. But, to be fair, most ultraportables these days are not upgradeable.
-Bottom of laptop gets very warm when the processor is performing intensive tasks. The fan will also kick in to cool the laptop internals. Just a warning, if you have the Surface Laptop Go resting on your lap, you may be bothered by the heat generated from the bottom of the laptop.
Do I recommend the Surface Laptop Go? This laptop is a solid performer for your everyday office, web, and video streaming needs. On one hand, its ultra portability, lightweight, and good looks make it an easy choice for consideration for those who only scratch the surface. On the other hand, Microsoft omitted features I listed in the Cons section of my review such as not having a backlit keyboard, no micro SD slot, no additional ports beyond one usb-c and one usb-a, and less than full HD screen which are included features in competitor models within the same price point. So, while the aesthetics makes it a clear choice, a closer look from a value perspective makes it more difficult to give a full recommendation. Overall, I would give it a lukewarm recommendation.

Powerful features in a small package

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
The Microsoft Surface Laptop Go is a powerful, full-featured laptop--a lightweight Windows 10 PC with a small footprint. At 1115 g (2 lbs, 7 1/4 oz) it features the latest Intel i5 chip, 8 Gb of memory, and a 256 GB solid state drive. It offers critical connection ports--one USB-A, one USB-C, and a headphone/mic port on the left side, but no HDMI port. It has a magnetic slot for the proprietary power adapter connection on the right side. The power adapter is small and lightweight. The Surface Laptop Go has a full-size keyboard with a good feel, and a large trackpad. A mouse is optional. All this is housed in an attractive metal case.
I set up the Surface in less than 30 minutes. Since this is a Windows 10 computer, you are advised to sign in with your Microsoft ID to get the most out of the system. You can choose what information is shared with Microsoft.
This Surface comes without software; some vendors bundle Microsoft Office and other programs with the Surface Laptop Go at a slight additional cost. When you install Office software, your documents integrate with your Microsoft cloud account, so you can access documents from different devices. I loaded several graphic and web design programs, my password manager software and browser extensions, and I was ready to go. Typical of Windows PCs, it took a while to load the programs. They worked well, without glitches, once loaded.
The Surface is fast, the keyboard is responsive, and the screen is bright, with fine resolution. At 12.4 inches, the screen is great for everyday office apps, Web browsing, streaming video and social media. When you start the laptop, the On/Off button also serves as a fingerprint reader, so you do not need a password to log in. The Surface has a touchscreen, which is intuitive to use, especially if you already own a tablet computer. The one drawback is that you cannot remove the keyboard or fold the screen back into tent or tablet configurations. You need a USB-C to HDMI connector (not included) to use an external monitor.
The battery lasts for several hours, depending on the type of software you use, and it generates a little heat, noticed under the top half of the keyboard. The machine is nearly silent in operation.
The USB-A port allows connection with "legacy" external hard drives, printers, etc. I inserted a USB receiver for a mouse, and the computer found it immediately, without the need to download mouse software. The USB-C port allows connection with newer hardware. You might invest in a USB-C mini-dock if you use several peripherals. The computer also recognized all the wireless printers on my network. I chose one and I was able to print within minutes.
All told, this Microsoft Surface Laptop Go has a lot of powerful features in a small package. It would work well for the typical office worker or student. Connected to an external monitor, it would be a good too for creatives.
