Love this Laptop. I waited two months before posting this review. Purchased the pen as well to use for work. My biggest critiques are the battery life isn't great when using the 120hz oppose to the 60hz and the reflectivity of the screen makes it more difficult to view when in a bright room or outside. Other than those issues I am very happy with this purchase. Versatility is amazing.

Perfect for your college student!

My son swore up and down that he would be just fine using his desktop computer for college...and an old iPad in class. After a few weeks it was clear that the iPad just wasn't cutting it. So I got him this and now he has no excuses for not being able to get his homework completed....from anywhere! This system has all the power of a desktop in the portable size of a laptop (on the heavier end) BUT also all the perks of a tablet.
This does everything that you iPad or Samsung tablet can do plus what they can't do that you usually would reach for your MacBook or other laptop. This was an upgrade from the laptops issued by his high school (I think it was a Lenovo ThinkPad X1 tablet/laptop) and weighs just about the same but with a bigger screen, more power and versatility.
If you can live without the fancy tablet hinge feature....you probably would be served well by a traditional laptop or other convertible laptop/tablet. The hinge feels like it would be easy to break but we have not had any issues yet. Considering that kids are often rough on everything, this might not be the best choice for younger teens.
Pros: Portable, powerhouse! Love the magnetic charger--life saver if you are prone to tripping over those darn power cords. Tablet that does everything PLUS a powerful laptop. Runs everything your PC does.
Cons: It's pricey for a laptop --but what isn't costly nowadays? Definitely not for Apple lovers. Tablet/screen hinge feels flimsy (but seems to hold up better than expected).
Value: it is worth it! This system balances power with portability and versatility so think of it as an investment in your portable productivity machine.
Bottom line: Great for working professionals on the go, older teens and college students.

A more practical successor of Surface Book

As a Surface Book user and fan, like many others it really pains me at first to see the detachable Book line getting replaced by the Laptop Studio form factor. But after using the Laptop Studio for more than a week I have come to agree that Laptop Studio is a qualified and more practical successor of the Book line.
Screen:
I can definitely notice the downgrade from Book's 260 PPI to Studio's 201 PPI. Texts are less sharp, and when you look at high resolution pictures the details are blurrier on the Studio. On the good side though, you do get 120Hz and slightly better color gamut, and it's also more power efficient thanks to reduced resolution. So I would say it's a draw between the Studio and the Book.
Speakers:
Studio is one of the best in the Windows laptop lineup in terms of speaker quality. The mid and high bands are rich, and the bass is okay for a laptop. MBP 16 still sounds better due to deeper bass, but there is no doubt that Studio blows the Book out of water in this item.
Camera:
There is no back camera on the Studio, so you can't pick up the Studio to take a quick reference photo or scan document like Book or Pro. The front camera also has a visible downgrade in terms of resolution (2.1 MP vs 5 MP), but the white balance and vibrance is far better on the Studio due to better software tuning. So Studio wins this in video call scenario, and Book is better in everything else.
Keyboard:
Aesthetically the keyboard looks better on the Book for its uniform color with the base, and the Book's keyboard is one of the few that doesn't sink into a well due to the unique hinge design. The key travel is also slightly longer on the Book and the keys are a bit softer and less tactile.
The keyboard on Laptop Studio on the other hand, looks like a MacBook copy. But as every Surface Book user would know, the backlit would make the Book's keyboard unreadable in lit environment, and this is a non-issue on the Studio. Also the keys are more tactile on the Studio, which I personally prefer.
Touch pad:
Larger touch pad + haptics feedback = clear win for the Studio.
Pen:
Another clear win for the Studio. The lines are noticeably smoother thanks to the higher refresh rate and updated digitizer hardware. The pen storage location is also better on the Studio that you never need to worry about the pen accidentally detaches from the laptop. The only minor drawback is that you now have to lift the front of the laptop to retrieve the pen.
Performance:
There is no doubt the CPU on the Studio is better. However, it's a complicated case for GPU since the 3050Ti only gets 4GB of VRAM, which is also barely enough for ray tracing or DLSS. So, depending on whether the application is VRAM hungry, you might get better or worse graphics performance than the Book's 1660Ti.
Thermals:
The thermal performance are better on the Studio thanks to it's more traditional design. The fans are also quieter on the Studio under full load. The only weird thing is that the warm air is blown directly onto your hand, makes me wonder why Microsoft wouldn't just shift the fans to the back. Although this is a non-issue for me as a person who exactly needs hand heater in the winter, it would definitely annoy some people.
Battery life:
Surprisingly, the smaller battery on the Studio delivers somewhat longer battery life than the 15" Book. This might be coming from: lower screen resolution, Windows 11 optimization, more efficient components due to the non-detachable design.
Connectivity:
Surface Book has better port selection but lacks TB support. Laptop Studio supports TB4 but only comes with 2 USB-C ports which means using a hub is inevitable. I would call it a draw for both devices.
Build quality:
This is where the Laptop Studio falls short of the Book. Surface Book might have various longevity and durability issues, but its build quality out of the box is stunning and solid into details. The Laptop Studio can't be said to be bad, but you will soon notice the slightly uneven gaps and tiny seams all over the device especially around the screen bezel and the hinge. This would be more than fine for a $1000 device, but at $3000 price point this is barely acceptable. That being said, everything else on the Studio is as good as a premium device.
Form factor:
The Laptop Studio isn't nearly as cool and unique as the Surface Book. Having a detachable base that can also augment the performance of the tablet portion is an ingenious design even as of today. However, cool as it is, the 2-hr battery life and easily scratched surface of the Book's tablet portion makes it isn't really as portable as a real tablet, not to mention that you will also lose almost all of the ports without the base. The Laptop Studio simply makes the entire mode transition process much faster and seamless at the sacrifice that you will be forever stuck to a 4 lbs "tablet"; which isn't entirely a bad thing considering that you will mostly be using the Book's tablet together with the base as well.
Overall, I'm satisfied with this evolution of the Surface lineup except for the concerning build quality control. The balanced hardware and outstanding versatility make the Laptop Studio a qualified successor of the Book series.

Closing lid while running 2 monitors kills wifi

Its an absolutely beautiful machine. Tons of power and function, However, it has one MAJOR downfall. If you intend to run dual monitors through a docking station, you can not close the lid. If you do, the surface will completely loose WIFI connection. I've literally scoured the miscrosoft answers pages and chatted with customer support. Its a known issue that they cant seem to address at the moment. I was liiterally told (by Mirosoft suppoer)
if I cant work with a single monitor I should just go ahead and return it. The eventual workaround was to purchase an USB to WIFI adaptor and every time I close the lid, I have to switch from the integral wireless card to the exterrnal receiveiving....All on a $3500 laptop that microsoft markets as the ultimate platform. I also own a surfce pro, and a surface studio laptop that do the same thing.

I have had this now for over a week. For reference I have a Surface Book 3 for about a year now as it happens I also have a Surface Studio 2 for a desktop. The Studio Laptop definitely draws on the Studio 2 in its design as well as the Book 3. The base is thicker and heavier than avg laptop as this time everything is in the base (SB3 had "guts" of the computer in the screen so that you could remove it and use it as a tablet), Upon opening the screen you immediately feel how thin the screen is now. The first time I moved it to tilt and angle forward I was concerned it might snap. Once you move it a couple of times it becomes less of a concern.
Using the Studio 2 is excellent with the way the screen can be positioned to optimize what you are doing (ie reading something vs using the pen for what you are doing vs typing in something etc. The screen positions of the Studio Laptop limits that some as it is presented as tradional laptop, the tilted back where the screen locks in in front of the trackpad, and lay flat, I have found that I can set it in between each mode if I am not looking to interact on the screen much (such as to read and want a better angle with a mouse or light screen touching).
The screen is excellent: bright, easy to read, sharp clarity, colors. The onscreen keyboard seems to always pop up on its own when you are at something to type, so having the screen lock in position over the keyboard is not as inhibiting as you may think. An external keyboard can aid if you have extended typing planned.
I had been using Win 11 for a couple of months on my SB3 via insiders beta so it has not thrown me having to adjust. Performance has been no issue. MS is known for not putting the top processors in the surface devices, but they excel in their designs. This machine is different as with its predecessors, and with that they give you flexibility and unique new modes to work in.
The base is solid on a desk or table. I have not used it much with it sitting in my lap. I have used it a couple of times with no issue, but not for an extended time to really comment on it. I think with the thicker base and thin screen laying flat would work (maybe media use, reading with little interaction), but other uses best on a hard surface.
I have found the Surface Laptop to be excellent to use, both things for work and more casual/personal use. The speakers are very good for listening to something (music, other audio), the screen and speakers have been excellent for watching media (I watched a tv show for example). The track pad feels more solid. Very responsive. Comfortable typing on the keyboard. Slim Pen 2 also works well. I did some handwriting and a little erasing with no issue.
The design won't be for everyone. But also, with more flexibility than a traditional laptop design you will find more convenient and comfortable positions of the screen with the flexibility of a machine that you can move around and take with you. Like other Surface devices MS fills some niches that opens up opportunities.
I would recommend taking a serious look if you have uses for the design options. Being positioned as a premium device it is too expensive if you are looking for using a typical laptop, and I would believe the heavy base would detract at some point. But the trade off is the design. Opens up more flexibility.

I had a 2 in 1 from a different manufacture that just died. I needed a new laptop and was not happy with the current offerings and availability. I was looking for the Surface Pro 8, but they sold out as soon as they were available. The Surface Laptop Studio was just released, it caught my attention so I ordered one. It seemed like the tilting screen was a gimmick. I tend to fold it flat and make edits with the computer on my lap. The speakers are really good for a laptop or tablet. People complain about the weight. I did not find this an issue. The battery life is good so far. I use the Surface dock 2 most of the time at home. I purchased the surface dial. The surface dial works well as a volume button, but lacks functionality for everything else. Windows 11 was surprisingly good for the initial release. Only a couple of bugs. The Slim Pen 2 is good for making detailed selections in photo editing software. I do not use the pen for writing or drawing. The display is excellent. I didn't think I would need the 120 hertz refresh, but the screen is impressive. I havd been using the Surface Laptop Studio for a month now and I am still happy with the purchase. The 32gb I7 machine is a workhorse.

Although I haven't had it long, I love this PC! The fell of the improved pen on the screen surface is awesome and I love the transformation to tablet. I do wish that this was available in more than 4 cores and 64m of ram would top it off. The price is a bit steep for what you get here, but so far it is a great machine, I use it for illustration, graphic design, and animation.

I purchased the Surface Studio Laptop I7, 32gb, 2tb after waiting months for the Apple M2 laptop that had delays longer than I wished to wait for it. The Surface Studio is a great replacement for the Apple. It lacks in a few areas, but not enough to keep me from buying it. Very happy with the performance as well as the touch screen which Apple still hasn’t had on any of its laptops. Im sure this will fit all of my needs and I also got a great deal on it compared to yhe 3500 dollar Macbook Pro. Looking forward to putting this thing theu its paces. So far, so good.

I have only had it for 2 weeks. I have loved all of my surface devices, but this is my favorite yet.
It's kind of heavy for a tablet but I choose this because I feel you get more for your money than buying 2 separate devices. It is very visually pleasing.
So far, the only cons are that the power bank gets really hot when the computer is drawing in a lot of power. Also, I have noticed some graphic issues (very minor)
Overall, I would recommend it to any student who needs the perfect balance between power and convenience.
