Impressive but the battery life, slow installs

The screen on the surface pro is impressive. The resolution looks astounding and the colors truly pop. For the most part, the surface is snappy and fast except for installations of updates, programs, and apps. When the surface is installing updates or programs like adobe reader or browsers it is utterly sluggish and slow. Downloads from the internet are also slower on this as oppossed to a way older laptop i have. I have 200MBPS internet dwnld speed and verified my internet quality, but i notice the slowness with the surface. I dont plan on frequent downloads or installs of programs so this is not a huge deal breaker but just an annoyance. I specifically reviewed the reviews about the battery life before making this purchase and saw that all reviews report impeccable battery life. The specifications report 13.5 hrs (with video watching and defaults including auto brightness). WHAT AM I MISSING HERE?? I am no gamer or photo editor and i consider myself a very light user. I have turned off ALL radios, location settings, onedrive, and any other data consuming app or setting on my surface that may drain the battery. My battery setting is on the 2nd level- the Recommended level with 33% or 40% screen brightness not enough to fully enjoy the popping screen colors and yet i am only getting about 4 to 6 hours of battery with this on internet browsing, typing on word, or looking at the different settings of the OS. Sometimes the keyboard light is on, sometimes its off. I have literally searched every part of the OS to find anything else draining the battery, i tested shutting down the system and also letting it sleep with airplane mode on for overnight and theres no difference. I also allowed the surface to die of depleting battery to recharge it back to a 100% (found this suggestion through Microsoft's website). If you google "battery life", results will show that the surface battery is nowhere near 13.5 hrs and reports also have that feature as a con of this device. So i question every review on here to please let me know what settings you have and how you use the system to report awesome battery life. With this said, i don't know whether to believe if the reviews are biased towards the battery/product or if somehow I potentially have a defect... Aside from the battery, i am very impressed with this system, especially the touchpad and the keyboard. It is just like a laptop keybaord and is comfortable to type on. The touchpad is super smooth. I would prefer to have Home and End buttons on the right of the layout but i can engage in a learning curve to get use to them at the top. I also would like to see the number pad incorporated on the dedicated letter keys like some laptops have on their keybaords as well. The SD mini crd slot is a nice plus but Microsoft should have included at the minimum, 2 usb's not just 1. I will have to buy the MS dock for $175 to use USB devices simultaneously. One other nuance is that i noticed from removing and inserting my usb devices on the surface, some of the metal or silver paint chips away in little particles as if producing wear and tear on the inside of the usb area of the surface. I hope my usb connections dont become damage by this and was also expecting to see better quality in this area. In reality the surface is just like every other Windows laptop/tablet with its own proprietary design, materials, and parts. The biggest thing going for it IMO is the screen brightness and resolution. But this actually falls short on battery life, I/O, SSD space, and swiftness on certain usage with the system. Perhaps the battery will magically get better over time, that is my main regret and dissapointment with the surface purchase so far. I would be ecstatic about this product if only the PC would last an adequate amount of time per the way i interact with it. Its not a hidden secret that consumers want computers to have adequate ports, storage space, and true battery life that matches everyday usage not just watching videos and auto brightness that dims the screen excessively. I would hope that Microsoft implements this general consensus in their future models of the surface. Luckily i got this on sale.

After long comparisons and research, I decided to buy the Surface Pro. Everybody is different in their preferences and for me, initially the thing that I cared about the most was going through specs trying to find the laptop that is suitable to me and would give me the performance I need. However upon a close inspection of the different laptops from other brands and Microsoft, user experience came to mind, which to me suddenly it became to my awareness. In terms of user experience, Microsoft has done so many things right, I would probably miss to mention them all. The screen for example is incredible, it is color accurate and very sharp with very high resolution, it is one of the brightest as well so there is no problem using it outdoors. It also has 3:2 aspect ratio which is superb for productivity. Since it is so sharp and high resolution and quality, you won't even feel like you need a larger screen as you fit all that you need in it . The user experience goes more to how great it feels to use it, the way the keyboard, the mouse, the hinge and more. Takes it to the level of Apple in terms of everything fits together with the operating system with an amazing user experience. Also there is no fan, so it stays silent. There are battery modes integrated in Windows 10 to choose from that really match your needs whether you want to save energy or prefer performance. In terms of the physical dimensions: I wanted something that is compact and lightweight that would fit a small bag in case I want to carry it all day and cycling with it to some coffee shops and get work done. Many laptops these days are much more light and compact than they used to, but still, this one takes it to the next level of being almost light as an iPad, especially if you take the keyboard off which there is no reason to do that as it is light enough. It is also admirable and remarkable, especially since this is a full I5 CPU which packs in serious power. Build materials: It feels solid and strong despite the light weight of it. Everything in it including the sophisticated hinge, the keyboard itself and the magnetic keyboard attachment mechanism, show strong material choices and design. Also very pleasant to touch and use the keyboard and the trackpad. The keyboard is one of the best I've tried, it is accurate, have good key travel, comfortable and not noisy, suitable for quiet environments as well. The texture of the keyboard and the trackpad is very pleasant. Battery life is amazing! Performance: There is an 8th gen now with quad core in the competitors laptops and the Surface Pro has the 7th gen dual core, which I was skeptical about, but it gives me what I need and more, as it is a fast machine I am still suprised by it's capabilities. I'm a programmer and I feel like it gives me definitely everything I need running few IDEs at once, running virtual machines etc.. For really serious video editing, in case you are a content creator or a film maker that has to have their edits as soon as possible on the go, as high end as you can get, the better. So there will be higher end laptops. However for most of us including various pro users, this machine is more than capable to fill any need fast. Got the pen and it is working amazingly well. Got a 128 SD card to put all my multimedia files and I'm good in terms of storage. In conclusion, very happy with my purchase.

    Exceeded Expectations

    Posted

I had many high expectations for this product, yet somehow this managed to exceed every one of them! This is the definition of a refined product. Rather than trying some new design from Surface Pro 4 to this 2017 Surface Pro, MS just worked on perfecting the Surface Pro 4 which yielded this version. I was so impressed I decided to get the pen as well (which I didn't think I would) to see if that would also exceed my expectation, and yep, it did! The screen is beautiful, battery life perfect, speed excellent, ease of use is through the roof! Easy, fast, simple, and it will make you more productive than any other product!! I use this primarily as a student and a little with my work. The skin I have is a dbrand carbon fiber skin. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a laptop or a tablet (or both obviously) and would not recommend this to anyone looking to game (a true gamer does not mobile game he uses a desktop with the latest nvidia graphics card in SLI-anyone looking to game on a laptop is a disgrace and I ask you to stop reading my review). Of all the surface pro configurations this will be the best configuration for most users as the fanless i5 has the best battery life and you don't need an i7 for laptop/tablet purposes-it would just be a waste of money. 128gb ssd is the best b/c any higher is just more money, and why in gods name do you need more storage on a laptop in 2018? Use the cloud people! 8GB ram is the sweet spot. 4GB is unacceptable and it's sad MS even offers that. 16gb is overkill for laptop/tablet functions in MOST cases. If you're an extreme video editor on the go then go 16, otherwise 8gb is perfect with room to spare :). Of course the other reason to go with this configuration is the great sale best buy has! 799 is a steal of a deal, I would have easily paid triple for this had I known just how great it is before. This is the laptop to end all laptops.

After checking all the specs and comparing the Surface Pro to everything else out there in the same price range I decided on the Surface Pro... but I only kept it for 1 Day and got a Macbook Air instead and this is why. Reason #1: It really is not a laptop but more like a tablet. It does not sit stable on a lap. The keyboard is flopping around and it is not secure to type on unless your at a desk. The trackpad feels hollow and not firm. o be happy with a Surface Pro it need to be used for what it was made to be and that is a TABLET. I already have an ipad so the Surface Pro just wan't the right choice. Reason #2: I really don't like the Platinum color. It looks cheap and there is not enough contrast between the white letters and the keys. You would need to get the Blue or Red keyboard instead. Plus I'm sure the platinum will look dirty over time. Reason #3: The biggest reason is the Windows Updates. After the updates my Surface Pro started acting up. The screen would no longer rotate from horizontal to vertical when I was holding it like a tablet. Then, after shut down it would not come back on. So, that was it. I decided to go the way of the Apple and just turn it in for a Macbook Air. And I have had NO problems. The Air is very stable on my lap and has a bit larger screen. It may not be HD but it makes up for it in brightness and clarity. The screen is very acceptable in my opinion. It beats looking at a Black or Blue screen from a windows system any day.

The Tablet Laptop does it all

The Microsoft Surface Pro hits all the high marks of what you want in a high end product from the magnesium back to the industrial hinge and the beautiful screen. The keyboard is premium feeling as well as long as your willing to pay for them but good that this bundle included the Alcantara cover with it. The performance of this hybrid is top notch for this size of the device and this is what you want when you're paying this kind of money for the device; the pen works very well but that is sold separately. Overall, great battery life on the whole, about 9-10 hours of real world use. People have been complaining about screen bleed but my unit doesn't suffer this issue so I am happy with the display. The I/O could be better with a USB-C port and a full size SD card slot for photographers, but this won't bother many. In conclusion, get this device if you want a high end tablet that offers more laptop functionality than tablet but still provides some of the benefits of having a tablet. If your looking just for a tablet-centric device this one won't be the best as it tends to steer more in a laptop style interface. On the whole, there is not much to complain about with this device and if you catch one for a good deal and savings the value shoots up even more. $1,200 is the highest I would go for a device of this type however, further up in price you might want to look for more powerful devices.

I have been using the Surface Pro for 3 weeks already and so far I have to say the experience has been great. I moved from a MacBook Pro to this device and so far I don't regret it. - Build quality is excellent and durable - Love that is very portable, better than my mac and very reliable. - price tag was great and the spec are just perfect - The keyboard is great, a little flemsy when you type due to the angle of the keyboard and the space between the cover and the surface where you put the device. but overall it's great, the keys are spaced well and they have good travel. - The screen is awesome, I feel that it's better than the retina display on my mac The convenience of using the surface as a pc and a tablet is great and the transition between both is smooth, once you move the cover to the back the device disables the keyboard and you can hold the Surface as a tablet, flip it back and the keyboard is functional again (you also get a notification when movingfrom one set up tp the other one). The only concern I have for right now with my device is the battery life, I feel that I have to plug it very often. Not sure if I am using it to much or if I need to start playing around for the settings but the battery is draining pretty fast.

I am picky and spent hours looking for a laptop to invest in. My last laptop was from 2012 and wasn't making the cut anymore. I contemplated and researched and finally decided that this is the one for me. I have no regrets! I travel quite a bit and this laptops charge easily last me all day while commuting back and forth to class, finding the nearest cozy cafe to work in, or just taking it to my back porch. I love writing on the keyboard (was eager to write the review because its such a fun little keypad). The screen is incredibly clear and pictures look better than when I originally took them. One of the deciding factors was the size of the charger. It's light and packs down well similar to a Mac. I was hesitant to get such a small screen but it has been the perfect size for class and I don't feel like it's intrusive whenever I sit it up on my desk during a lecture. This was my end of the summer present to myself after working my summer job and it is easily the best purchase I could have made! Looking forward to budgeting for the accessories that come with it!

The surface pro 2 bundle (12.5", Core i5, 8GB ram, 128GB SSD w/Platinum Type Cover) was already a great value but with the sale price just barely above the upgraded Surface Go, it was a no brainer. The upgraded type cover is soft and inviting, unlike previously owned laptops with aluminum chassis. Windows 10 runs smoothly on it and the battery life has so far been great. Getting set up was easy and the touch screen so far has been responsive and precise. My biggest complaint would be that if you're using this in your lap, the stand may be a bit harsh on the legs but the laptop is overall so light that it's not too bad. I also feel like the internal SSD is overpriced. There should not be such a premium for more SSD storage these days. I appreciate having the option to add an SD card but why not start at 256GB internal? It's also certainly not a gaming or high performance machine but as an everyday laptop, especially for students, it is a wonderful alternative to the currently outdated MacBook air and the regular sales make it even more appealing.

I also own a Note Pro which has Android on it. Using it I would sometimes wish it had Windows. Enter the Surface Pro which is by far a more powerful machine. It works best with the type cover because using it as a tablet, I find myself wanting my Note Pro. This is a software issue with the way Windows 10 is designed so I'm sure a future update will refine its tablet functionality. As far as the hardware, the Surface Pro is awesome. Everything screams quality. The screen... the kickstand.... the type cover (which should be included standard in my opinion) are all well built as I type this review on my Surface Pro. The battery life is good.... not Android tablet good but better than some laptops I've used. It's the ultimate portable being the size of a paper notebook but with the full power of Windows and the processing power to drive it with ease. 8GBs of memory is the current sweet spot for memory and the 128GBs of storage is easily expanded with a micro SD card. I am very happy with the Surface Pro and look forward to the next generation of Surface Pros.

I was looking for a fully functional laptop that was light enough to travel without being a burden. I'd been eyeing the Pro since they came to market. A package deal was offered at the right time, so I bit. Initially I was concerned about overheating. My first time using the Pro it got EXTREMELY hot while I was using it (plugged in). After researching, I saw suggestions that this was resolved by going through the Microsoft updates. Updates made -- problem gone! It would have been helpful to have this guidance when I made my purchase. I was a step from returning it. Overall, I LOVE my Pro's functionality. Easily moves from laptop to tablet. I can vnp into the office and work from anywhere. I haven't yet experienced to many glitches. Overall happy customer.

I bought this for going back to school. I was wanted something lightweight, flexible enough to handle the school load, but useful for other times when not worried about homework. So far, 1 month in, it's doing well! I waffled between this and a traditional laptop with a touchscreen. For the functionality and portability, this has been awesome. Takes up less room than a notebook in my bag, battery lasts all day being toted around and used, and can still entertain myself when downtime strikes (or when kids will inevitably want to watch a movie on it). Hopefully this will stay as useful as it is now going forward in the college career.

If this package remains available, you can't beat it. You get the Surface in a decent configuration, plus the $160 type cover for less than the Surface normally sells by itself. Can't say anything bad about the Surface. Have had them for years, and they are product that launched and still defines the genre. It's not what everyone wants or needs, but if you know you want a Surface, with an I5, this is the package to get. Only drawback is that it only comes with the platinum keyboard. That would have been my choice anyway. If you just have to have red or blue, it'll cost you $160. Maybe you can sell the platinum one ;)

I'm a very busy professional who works out of his briefcase. I used to carry around a clunky laptop because I didn't want to sacrifice power and screen size for convenience and comfort. This little tablet is almost as powerful as my desktop but it hardly weighs anything and the graphics are amazing. It has a USB port on the side which allows me to connect an external solid state hard drive. This was a major sticking point between deciding on this and an iPad Pro. The touchscreen adds a new dimension of ease and productivity as well. Not sure how I lived with out it. Can't recommend it enough.

I love my new surface pro and pen, together they are great. The surface is fast. Has a USB port, wish it was a thunderbolt port, but the usb 3 is fine. I've been using it for a month or so, I edit photos and videos with it, the pen takes some getting use to, but i really like that too. My even thinking of getting a drawing pad for my desktop, that's how much I like the surface with pen. I had not used windows 10 in tablet mode before, but I use it all the time now. I wish I had gotten the 256 GB hard drive. I recommend it.

    Excellent Versatile Laptop

I used to be a devoted Mac fan. Last last year I bought a surface book 2 to develop on. As an aside I’m very impressed with Visual Studio 2017 for web development. Anyway, I was looking for a little more portability as I travel a fair amount. This laptop has been perfect. The performance is very good, screen is great and the price including the type cover was unbelievable. This machine runs visual studio, sql server, and the office apps very well and meets my development and portability needs. I’ve quickly become a Microsoft fan.

Great value right now that the price has been reduced for Microsoft’s back to school sale. It easily goes from a laptop to a tablet in a snap! Only reason I give it a 4 out of 5 is because the charger is still proprietary so you have to carry its own charger everywhere you go, there’s no USB-C port, and sometimes the Windows Hello (face unlock) doesn’t work. Other than that, it’s a great device and it’s flexibility and versatility should fit the majority of students’ needs.

If I weren't for the deal on this bundle I probably would not own one. Surface pros are still quite expensive. I looked at the Surface Go, $399 for base, plus keyboard $129 total $529, but everyone says get the $599 model well then with keyboard it's $729! I got this model w/ keyboard for $799 better screen faster proc more ram. No brainer which one to buy. Been loving this thing, only complaint it is a little thick...

We haven't owned a Surface Pro until now, but I am very impressed with both the hardware and the software. So far it works seamlessly, and is extremely fast. It supports everything we want to do with it, including taking notes with it with the pen. We bought an HP pen separately, and it works great for about a third of the price of the Microsoft one. All-in-all, we're very impressed with the flexibility and power of this tablet/laptop!

I bought the Surface Pro for my son who will be a first year college student this fall. After doing some research this was his first choice of a computer and he really loves it. Its size is convenient for carrying around since he will be on the bike a lot. Most importantly it has all the functions he wants in a computer and it is super easy for him to get familiarized with it. I have not heard any complaints from him since we bought it.
