I have been waiting to purchase an SP for a long time. Our 1st gen Surface RT has been a great travel companion and always done what we ask, however it was time to upgrade our tablet, laptop and desktop at the same time. After doing a ton of research and finding this on a fantastic deal before Christmas I pulled the trigger on the SP3 i7, SP4 type cover, and Surface dock. As a tablet it does everything a tablet should. Streams video effortlessly, plays all sorts of games, and has a very good set of speakers. As a laptop this thing shines! A lot of people complain about thermal issues and throttling. The upgrade to windows 10 made things much better. I then undervolted the processor and graphics chip using Intel ETU. 99% of heat issues are now non existent. In theory performance takes a hit doing this, but I am now about to maintain 100% CPU and graphics performance at all times. Framerates during games are now steady as a rock. HIGHLY recommend doing this if you have the technical knowhow. There are guides online if you search it. Utilizing the surface dock has been a great feature as well. As soon as I plug it in the Surface transforms into a dual 27" monitor workstation. Performance does not seem to be affected at all although the monitors are only 1080p. Simply loving this device. Wish I could have pulled the trigger on the SP4 i7 but I would have probably gone with the Book if I needed the extra horsepower. Coming out of it for under $1100 out the door and having it replace 3 devices is a total win for me. Upgrading my tablet, laptop and desktop to the specs of the SP3 would have been easily double that and I would have still had to deal with the hassle of cloud saving and memory cards to transfer files between them. The Surface line has always been a winner in my book but the SP3/SP4 cements it into the leaders in the segment. Nobody else offers a package like this. Well done Microsoft!

Surface Pro 3 Great for Students and More!

Microsoft Surface Pro 3 is great for college students, it is light weight for great mobility and can take place of many thing that you carry around with you. This device can take your tablet and laptop and makes you a great device all in one. The light weight device is only 1.76 pounds and only .36 inches thick with a 12 inch screen makes it much easier to transport than your normal laptop. With this being a two in one device you have a keyboard that you can take on and off when switching between a tablet and a laptop. With that being said it is great for college student by if they are going to be needing it to write paper, or if they want to take it off and just us it as there book, or to be reading off of PowerPoints and own notes. That saying the keyboard is going to be smaller than your normal one but that is what this product is all about small, mobile, and light weight. This device also come with the “Kindle” built into it, which is a readying book device that you can buy all of your books electronically (which are normally cheaper than the actual books its self). Which for some student they would not accidently leave a book somewhere they can have all of them in one lightweight electronic device. This tablet can even replace your notebook with the new stencil it has that comes with it. If you are a person that likes to write all of your notes that is an app that comes with it so you can just write right on your tablet and save it. The surface Pro 3 can make your life much easier and make you things more organized, also great for student having to move around a lot.

this thing flies! i7 is a powerhouse, eats battery a bit more but not bad, love the weight and function, its a great piece, and worth it for the 128, added a micro SD samsung Pro+ card at 128gb and have $256 on the cheap:)

    True Laptop Replacement

I was skeptical when I first purchased the i7 version of the surface pro 3. However after using it for several week and upgrading to Win 10, I have to say this is by far the best laptop/tablet I have ever owned. The stylus works flawlessly, the portability is amazing, and with the i7 it can handle just about anything you throw at it. Don't hesitate, if you are in the market for a new laptop do yourself a favor and pick up a Surface.

Great compromise between laptop and tablet

I was thinking about this purchase for some time if the device like this will be for me as the tablets never fully convinced me. But now that i have it it is awesome. Fast, responsive, and win 10 is easy to navigate on the touchscreen. Some people complain that it is getting very hot, I would say worm, but not in the way that you can not hold it.

My son loves his Surface Pro 3

Portable, easy to use, great touch features. Wanted a laptop/tablet for my son for college that wouldn't be too big and ran a full version of Windows. (He's got a more powerful desktop for higher end uses.) I'm a Mac guy, and I was impressed with the features and excellent melding of laptop and tablet aspects. (Some laptops do a REALLY poor job of this, ending up not being a very good laptop nor a very good tablet.) Seems pretty robust and has done well for the first half of the year in college. The new Surface 4 looks even better!

    i7 Processor too hot

This computer is really good however I could not stand the over heating as soon as I turned it on and had to return it. The i7 after researching it this is a known issue. So if the sound of a fan running constantly doesn't bother you then it's great otherwise go for the i5 which is what I plan to replace it with.

    Tablet-Laptop not quite smooth, yet

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

This "tablet" fails to transition smoothly between a tablet to a Laptop: When viewing on an external monitor many of the useful touch commands in Office Suite are illogical and unnecessary in this setup-if this would switch to PC-like like the tablet switching from Tablet/Desktop mode would be a win in my book. Using it in tablet mode, automatically switching to titles makes a lot of sense. Eventhough this device has a SSD It wakes up like a pc, 5-7 seconds, iPad is far superior with wake up speed. Additionally, One Note is not set to the highest priority resulting in long delays when writing/drawing when system is performing background tasks--outlook checking for messages, etc. Remote Desktop is painful as well as using TeamViewer with the touchscreen with or without the Pen; 3rd party apps can help by adding an onscreen mouse pad but don't automatically deactivate when docked. Lastly, typing on a bus or auto is less than pleasant-really missing the laptop keyboard- the split onscreen keyboard is a nice touch in a pinch. Great: Display, very smooth screen writing even with gatorglass, auto switching when docked (table mode to desktop mode, though Microsoft Suite isn't yet integrated), hdmi output, USB 3.0. I have never owned and Apple device, but they still have market cornered for now for integration of devices, for now. Before you buy, Wait a year or more longer for necessary improvements before purchasing- I'm dealing with buyer's remorse. My surface now sits in a closet running as my network server for now: Windows 10 with Spiceworks and UCS in Virtual box. It just doesn't do what I need right now.

    I thought it was Everything

I bought this back at Christmas. I needed something more versatile and easier to carry across campus to class. I researched these for about 3 months before deciding to purchase the Pro 3. I noticed when I first got it that it the tablet will not keep time. I had to continuously correct the date and time. I had troubles with the keyboard not wanting to work if you had it in the wrong position. Yesterday, it was doing this with the keyboard but no matter where I moved the keyboard I could not get it to work. I decided to turn it off and turn it back thinking maybe it was just being funny. When I tried to turn it back on, it would get stuck on the start up screen. I waited a little while thinking maybe it was updating something. After waiting 30 minutes, I decided to take it to Geek Squad. Once there I was told that there was nothing they can do to fix it and that they would send it off to be looked at, but more than likely it will be marked damaged and that they would replace it. They said this will take on average two weeks but the Pro 3 is on back order and that it could take up to a month. I do appreciate that they offered to replace it, but why do I want another product that they can not fix? They said that they would give me store credit but only for the tablet itself and pro rated amount of my warranty. This will not include the keyboard and pen. Even when I would have no use for them. Even If i choose to get the upgrade I will not get the keyboard for the upgrade which is a different keyboard than the Pro 3 keyboard. I personally would not recommend this for the fact of they cannot fix them or recover anything form them if the crash. I had great service from Geek Squad and understand that they did try, but its just really disappointing to spend so much on a product that cannot be fixed.

    Stops working after warranty expires

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I am a college student, and was very excited to get this. My first problem was that it is very hard to use on your lap or in any position other than on a table. Secondly, the screen is not supported whatsoever, so when a friend tried to use the touch screen, it fell two feet onto the floor and cracked the screen. The entire touch screen went berserk, and it took a good hour just to disable the touch screen, since the touch screen overrides the mouse. It cost $500 to replace, but it was my fault for dropping it. My biggest problem is that LESS THAN A MONTH after the warranty expired, it just stopped connecting to WiFi. I called Microsoft and they did everything that they could think of to fix it, and resulted in saying I would need to purchase a new one for $450, since the warranty was expired. I paid $1,000+ for a laptop that works just past its warranty date.

    Great Concept, horrible product

Purchased this because of how many things it could do, and the USB port. I have had nothing but problems. The first one flaked out on me within 6 months and Best Buy gave me a refurbished one because I had a warranty. The next day after receiving the refurb I had to go in because it would not download anything. I have constant problems, sometimes it doesn't turn on and I think it died again, sometimes the keyboard doesn't work, it boots me out of aps. Some of these problems might be because of windows 10 which sucks also, but seriously... worst experience ever. I will not be buying a Microsoft computer again, or tablet. Which is a shame because I can't stand apple.
