    It's a winner!

I've had my Surface Pro 3 for about two weeks now, and after having to return the first device, which came with Windows 8.1 and the free upgrade to windows 10, I finally stumbled on a winner. The first device would have worked just fine if not for the Windows 10 upgrade. After the upgrade, the device *refused* to detect the type cover. So I reverted it back to windows 8.1, (you can do that within 30 days of downloading and installing the upgrade) and the type cover worked for about half an hour, then also went kaput. The device was useless to me this way, so I returned it to Best Buy and asked for a device with windows 10 preinstalled. Kudos to Best Buy's customer service folk, they were happy to oblige, even let me open the box and power it up before I left the store to ensure the device was working to my satisfaction. Got the new device home and it's been great! I love that the type cover lights up when in use, eliminating the need for a separate laptop light that I typically used with my previous laptops. I also love the ease of switching from laptop to tablet in a flash. I've used the device as a tablet probably more than a laptop, to watch movies, videos, read magagzines, even surf the web. I've used the device now as a laptop when I need the ability to type quickly and the Surface Pro 3 doesn't disappoint in that arena too. The portablility is a plus, as the tablet with the type cover is very light and fairly thin for such a robust device. The device is speedy, boots up very quickly, is smooth moving from applications to windows programs to web browser and has ample storage space for my needs. I was also impressed that my One Drive content automatically appeared on the new device with minimal action on my part - this includes my photos, of which I have many! The screen resolution is fantastic and the speakers are very good - not too loud, not too low - I've had other devices in which the speakers are barely audible making headphones a must, but that's not the case with the Surface Pro 3. I only use headphones if I'm out in the living room and someone else happens to be watching TV at the same time. Bottom line, my advise to anyone looking at the Surface line - it's worth the extra $$ to take the device with Windows 10 preinstalled. You'll save yourself a headache of possibly having a dud and having to return the device. My daughter was so impressed with the Surface line after seeing mine, that I bought her one for her birthday. Again, Windows 10 preinstalled. She is a college student and she will get much use from the device.

I am a college engineering student, and I have been taking notes digitally for the previous two semesters. I was using an android device, and while it worked, it did not flawlessly integrate with windows based programs, while there are work a rounds it was not quite exactly what i was hoping it would be. Enter the surface pro 3:i5:4gb ram:128gb hard drive Classes are about to start and I have been playing around with the device for the last few days since i purchased it. The fact that it can run the desktop version of one note, which seamlessly integrates with word, excel, and power point is a huge plus, especially if you plan on taking digital notes like I prefer. It has plenty of power and storage is not to much of an issue, especially if you use cloud based storage, which i prefer, and the micro SD card you can easily increase the amount of storage that is available to you. Cons: The only reason I have given it four stars instead of five is because there is a power drain issue, when it occurs the cpu idles at around 20%-35% which is a considerable drain on the battery. All you have to do to fix it is restart, but I have not been able to determine what causes it or how to permanently stop it. I am sure the kinks with windows 10 will be worked out soon and when it is I will be changing this to a five star review. Even with the power drain issue this computer is amazing, and extremely versatile, it has already replaced my tablet, and my laptop!

Advice for note-takers: win8 still better than 10

I have used my Surface pro 3 for 8 months now. Although I didn't purchase it from Best Buy, I want to chip in my views towards note-taking under the new win10 system. I think note-taking is a very important aspect for Surface users, so I hope my review can be helpful for those of you on the fence. My surface originally had win8.1 pre-installed, and everything is awesome, and I absolutely love almost every aspect of it. Enough praise has been said by a lot of other users as well, so I won't repeat. The problem starts when I upgraded my system to win10. I am a heavy note-taker, and found the OneNote app, which under win8.1 is a fantastic note-taking tool, now under win10 becomes extremely clunky and unserviceable. The bezel, even in tablet mode, is noticeable on screen. The handy round-pallet for pen and stroke options is GONE. Turing pages and editing notes become more complicated than before. I still don't know, as of now, how to change the stroke thickness on OneNote in win10. In short, under win10, OneNote on Surface is not an old-style notebook anymore. It looks like an office desktop program (yes, both under tablet and desktop mode). I don't really like that. So if you plan to do a lot of note-taking, think twice before buying a win10 pre-installed Surface. I would advice getting a win8.1 Surface.

Best computer I have ever owned- NO REGRETS!

I consider myself a techie. My husband is a computer engineer. We dislike bad products (HP... never again). I have been wanting something light weight that is easy to carry around for school, something I can read on at night with a dim screen, and something as powerful and capable as any laptop. This product fits every desire I had and I absolutely love it! I do not regret buying it at all. I can use many USB products with it, like a wireless mouse, external hard drive etc. It's pretty much amazing. Why did I give it 4 stars? Because Windows 10 is still so new that sometimes there are little glitchy errors. Nothing serious. Mostly regarding turning the screen on and off, or removing the keyboard when the screen is off only to have the computer think it's still there and then not recognize it when it gets plugged back in. There are easy ways to solve all of these little glitches. Also, I just want to point out that this tablet does not have a CD/DVD drive- which is no problem for me because we have other computers- and it is also probably not what you want for serious gaming. I have played Xbox One with it outdoors, which was super cool! But I personally wouldn't use it to play anything like The Sims, which can run hot and should really be played on a desktop any way. This is just my untested opinion. Absolutely beautiful machine for school, work, internet browsing, reading, etc. So ridiculously convenient.

    Great Tech, buggy software

Tech wise this product is 5 stars. The ability to take notes on Onenote and then be able to access it from any computer anywhere is very convenient and taking notes with the stylus actually isn't to awkward. Decent writing to text application, and the detachable keyboard / cover really can come in handy. The only downside, as with MOST new updates windows 10 has a few issues. One of the reasons I got the tablet was so I could purchase all my textbooks as E-books to save me from lugging around all the actual books, (and its cheaper to rent, or even find some books free). First problem I ran into was that the kindle app (tablet version, which by default installs on the tablet) can't access many of these books, and frankly for no good reason. Luckily there is a work around, you just have to download the PC version of Kindle app and make sure when you open it on your tablet your opening the PC program and not the tablet APP, then for whatever reason it works just fine. Seeing how they market this device very strongly towards college students you would think they would make this seamless rather than make the consumer have to figure out how to work around it. Sometimes it freezes or acts a little buggy, but usually its from being on for a few days with out restarting. A simple restart and it will work fine for the next few days. Hopefully given enough time to patch all the bugs the stability and function of the tablet will continue to improve. In the mean time it does get the job done and adds some convenience but for the sticker price given I would expect a more polished product. Still, now that I have it, I wouldn't give it up.

    Expect to need a replacement

I purchased my Surface Pro 3 for school. I was blown away. It is lightning fast and lightweight, I absolutely fell in love. However, when I decided to install the free anti-virus that comes with this purchase, it completely crashed. It restarted and would only show the UEFI firmware screen. I did some research (I wanted to try EVERYTHING before requesting a replacement) and apparently this has been a common issue for Surfaces since 2013. Beautiful. I contacted Microsoft support and they informed me that I would need to ship my Surface and wait for a replacement to be shipped to me. Imagine my disappointment considering the fact that I start school in three days. Luckily, my support rep was nice enough to call the closest Microsoft retail store for me and see if I could swap it out at the store instead. What a life saver! Although I have not used my Surface Pro 3 all that much yet, I am very impressed with it and very very satisfied with Microsoft's support department. Just an FYI. I would have given it 5 stars if this issue had not arised.

Great computer for a college student

I bought my Surface Pro 3 earlier this year because I was looking for a new computer that I could use for college. I'm in my second year, and as I learned the hard way my first year, I hated lugging around my heavy laptop every day, and a plain tablet just wasn't enough. I researched the Surface Pro 3 and read tons of reviews, and after messing around with one in the store I decided it was the right thing for me. Several months later, I realized I made the right choice. The SP3 is really lightweight for it's decent screen size, and I really love the 2-in-1. I'm a writer, so having the laptop/keyboard function is a must, but having the tablet function is great too--the touch screen is great. I haven't had any problems with the operating system (I upgraded to Windows 10 in July and it's been great so far) and the device runs nice and fast for all the things I use it for. What's kinda weird is that sometimes the screen flashes and blinks a little bit and I don't really know what that's about, but it hasn't affected anything else so I'm not going to knock off any stars for it. All in all, I love it. It's thin, lightweight, runs fast, and the HD display is pretty awesome. It meets all my needs and then some. Definitely recommend!

Received surface pro 3 with windows 10 in early September 15'. We heard great reviews of this computer and thought it would be a nice replacement for our work computer. After opening our first surface pro we experienced crashing, freezing and we had to skip a couple of the initial set up options (ex syncing the pen). It took over an hour to get past the initial set up. After getting past the set up phase we tried connecting to the Internet and it would not stay connected. We have several other products hooked up to the Internet at our business and have never had problems staying connected. We brought it back to the store to the geek squad the next day and without hesitation they replaced it telling us it was not fixable. After bringing home the second brand new one we experienced almost the same problems and called the 1800 number for the geek squad in which our representative gave no help at all! (The guy didn't even know what the surface pro was!) we ended up hanging up on him because of the nonsense he was saying! I really hope someone from bestbuy hears that phone call and realizes how bad that guy was, he sounded like he came out of a time machine from 1985! Please listen to that "recorded"call best buy! It's absurd. In the end after a week of major frustration we replaced the surface pro with the apple MacBook Pro per recommendation of a very intelligent geek squad guy from the store. Absolutely no problems at all! We love the Mac book!

I have owned this tablet for approximately 1 month. This is my first Windows 10 device. I was a bit concerned before buying this device because of the screen size, because I do wear reading glasses but this has not proven to be difficult at all. Pros - this device boots up very quickly and the apps launch very quickly. Boot time has averaged about 10 seconds and app launch time is averaging about 20 seconds. Internet navigation is quick as well. I have a Windows 7 PC at work and find that Windows 10 is a much more intuitive operating system. It only took a few moments to become accustomed to the new start menu and the Windows 10 functionality. While I have not downloaded much onto the Surface, I did purchase the 64 GB micro SD card to add additional storage if needed. Cons - The only thing that I do not like is after I upgraded my Home PC to Windows 10 the same settings on my PC displayed all devices which required me to alter my settings on my Surface after I had upgraded my Windows 7 PC to Windows 10. Summary - In summary I find the Surface Pro 3 with i5 processor and 128 GB storage to be more than adequate for my needs as power user.

So far so good!! Overall I am very happy with my purchase! I walked in BB intending to purchase the basic Surface, but was persuaded into purchasing the Pro and I'm glad I did. It is a bit larger and heavier than I was expecting for a tablet, but I am adjusting. It came with Windows 10 pre-loaded which I am still wrapping my head around because at work I use Windows 8 (i think) and my personal computer is a Mac. The screen is very crisp and bright and I opted for i5 so it is also pretty fast. When it is very quiet, I have noticed that I can hear it running. Also I notice it tends to run a little warm when using it with the keyboard flipped up against the backside of the tablet. I am still tinkering around with it since I have only had it for a month, so there is much more to explore. So far I have only being using it for leisure (reading, playing games, etc) at it is serving its purpose. I also purchased one for my BF and he is obsessed with it to the point where I hardly ever see him use his chromebook he purchased a month prior. He uses his for school and it seems to be working well. This is not a flaw about the Surface, but about Windows in general; the Windows Store definitely needs to catch up with Google and Apple with its app selections and compatibility

Purchased in August 2015 with Windows 10 installed. Very different from my iPad. Is really a full computer in a pad. Purchased the keyboard, a Bluetooth mouse and keypad. Also purchased the desk doc. With all that I get full functionality three ways: First it is a good pad that runs all my regular apps. Then with the keyboard, mouse and key pad it works better than my laptop ever did and was much lighter. Finally with the doc it becomes a full desktop. I bought two connectors for my two monitors and was able to connect them to both the doc and tablet. So it is like having three monitors. The doc also allows you to attach a regular keyboard, mouse and portable hard drive. Pretty slick setup. The Microsoft store is still only fair, so the selection of apps does not compare to the Apple Store. However, I can run my full Office 365 suite with no problems. Also love Windows 10. Very easy to work with. This is a great compliment to my iPad and I regularly use both at home or when I travel! Microsoft got this one right!

Got my Surface Pro 3 about a week ago and did not set it up the same day, later during the week started setting it up it was very smooth the whole process to get this thing up and running love the pen, it is much better than my surface RT. But then after inspecting it more in depth i first thought it was lint on the screen or else and stated to clean and did not came off. turn it off and the glass was perfect turn it back on and saw it again, like a piece oh human hair inside the glass that can only be see in a light or white background. So check your screens if your are still under the 15 days from BestBuy take it back. I did and they honor the price and gave me a SP4 since my SP3 model was not available. other than that this thing is great. Also when I got it got price match with another store so it was almost $250.00 less

I initially purchased this without opting for the type cover. Only to return two days later to pick it up. The cover and the addition of the STM Dux case (purchased elsewhere Amazong) completes the package. I had some trouble with the pen but Microsoft rectified that problem quickly and efficiently. This machine truly is a powerhouse full desktop replacement that is ultra portable. Every time I pick it up I feel as though I am holding a bit of future technology. It's quite astonishing that so much processing power can be packed into such a small and light (even with the case attached) one-handed device. This replaces a maxed out Dell that was starting to show its age but it also has to compete with a 1-month old Asus desktop (purchased at BB) and it blows both away in power. It's like witchcraft.

It has plenty of speed, power, and space, and it takes care of all of my laptop and computing needs. The Windows Defender security system works fine, and it works well in laptop or tablet mode. I love the quickness with which it turns on, turns off, restarts, and updates. Tiles available via the start button are very convenient. Excellent graphics and plenty of useful pre-installed programs, such as Fresh Paint, Edge, One Note, Cortana, and Groove Music. It is still a Microsoft product, so you do get the occasional Microsoft glitch now and then, such as the few times it has frozen on me on a Start and I’ve had to go through a particular process to get it restarted. This was particularly scary the first time it happened, but I looked online on another device and found the fix, and I’ve had to use that fix several times. Unfortunately, I have come to expect the occasional glitch in any Microsoft product, but overall, so far, so good, and I will definitely get a Surface Pro 4 or other new Surface product when it comes time for me to upgrade.

I bought the Surface Pro 3 to do just as advertised, replace my laptop. while it does a pretty good job of that, it does have a few things that could be changed to make it even better. For instance I have used my old laptop to work on a program that requires me to have a dongle plugged into a USB port, sort of a key to open up the software, this key must be plugged in all the while I am using the said software, but the Surface Pro 3 does not keep the USB powered up continuously, and in an effort to conserve battery, Microsoft has opted to not let consumers control this setting in the firmware as of this writing. This alone does not make this product bad, and while there are other small things that could be tweaked I find that the Surface is able to replace the laptop. So if your not using it as a work horse, because it doesn't replace the desktop, go ahead and try it out Best Buy will let you return it if you don't like it. Just make sure you get it back within 14 days.

At almost 30, I needed to go back to school. But I had no intention of hauling a full laptop around. I needed something light with a decent battery that ran a full OS. I considered the Macbook Air with it's superior screen-on time. But at the time, Best Buy was running a "back to school" promotion that allowed me to purchase this at an amazing discount. Then all I had to see was this amazing screen. SOLD. The battery life is better than I expected, the stand is flawless and the stylus is something I have really enjoyed doodling with. It would not link with my bluetooth keyboard, and after consideration.... I realized the folio keyboard is a necessity. I have my 2 gripes with the keyboard, but is an accessory, so I won't allow it to pull the rating of the SP3 down. End result, it does everything I need it to. AND I feel like it will last more than 2 years, and it's overall usefulness willy make it 4-5 years. VERY happy with this product.

I purchased the surface pro 3 for grad school. I like the stylus, the palm recognition (my palm doesn't write on the screen), and the onenote cloud feature (i can access my onenote notes anywhere). However, my product came automatically with Windows 10. I feel like the windows 10 software is hindering my windows experience. I have touch sensitivity issue (right click when I don't intend to) and certain apps (android, google chrome) aren't the greatest (understandable). While I want to reduce my 4 star rating to 3, the microsoft answer desk has helped alot with any questions I have had and often fix my issues via remote access. Also, a CON is the fact that the keyboard is not included in my surface pro. The tablet functions much better WITH the keyboard. Next, the keyboard is a suede material. I feel like I need to be extra careful to make sure it doesn't get dirty (clean so far). I wish it was a plastic or leather material instead.

I've had this a few months and I bought it specifically to use with the sketchbook app. It works very well with that app. I cant say anything else about its performance. The magnetic power plug is nice The pen works pretty well. Not as good as pencil and paper but acceptable for me. The build quality is great. Feels solid and well made. The sound is so-so. You'll want headphones for noisy areas to watch movies. The screen is nice. All devices have pretty nice screens these days. I'm an artist and I'm happy with it. The win ten OS is a good upgrade ftom eight. I use the tablet mode which improves the metro UI to workable status. Good job MS. This machine gets warm. Do get a folio case or something. Also do get the sales person to install the glass screen overlay. My last tablet had scratches in the screen just from using the pen. They did a fine job installing the protector. Looks like it came from the factory.

This review is for the Microsoft Surface Pro 3, 128g with the Intel I-5 processor. I bought this tablet as an organizational tool for college. I could not be happier with it. For taking notes and keeping them organized, for keeping track of when papers are due, etc. It is fast and I have played World of Warcraft on it. However I absolutely love it for school. The only reason it gets four instead of five stars is the camera's lack of a focus ability. I really wanted to use the camera to take pictures of my homework assignments but with this camera that is almost impossible. It takes distance pictures somewhat ok but it's the one letdown. If I'd have known, I still would have bought this tablet because it is awesome without it. If you are a photographer this isn't for you. If you are in business or school, this tablet will change your life.

I recently upgraded from the original Surface Pro to the Surface Pro 3 and I'm happy I did! The speeds, battery life, and video/sound quality have all been improved! The touch screen on the device is very responsive and the pen is on point! The tablet is light weight and easy to carry. The USB 3.0 port onboard lets you use any devices you would typically use with a normal laptop. I recommend pairing this with the Microsoft Surface Keyboard and a Bluetooth mouse to keep the USB port free. I also opted to save money and get the smaller hard drive size and purchased an external USB 256GB memory stick. Also, you have the option to add additional storage with the Micro-SD card port on=baord! Great buy, I don't miss having a full size laptop at all!
