Poor value: glitchy, overpriced, lacks substance

I've had the Surface Pro for about 5 months, and it continues to disappoint. I was initially drawn to it for the 2-in-1 versatility and technical specs (speed, storage, battery life, light weight), but it turns out, the Surface Pro leaves much to be desired. Here are my main sticking points: - The hardware for "laptop mode" needs work. The bottom of the kickstand has two tiny, rough notches that scratch up furniture, so I usually have to put something under it. And the attachable keyboard doesn't do anything structural for the "laptop", so if you actually use it in your lap, it's a balancing act; the tablet often falls over onto the keyboard and goes into sleep mode. The floppy keyboard also makes lifting and moving the laptop a two-handed job, despite the lightweight frame...Not a big deal, just annoying and impractical. - The screen and keyboard are both glitchy. The screen sometimes flickers or just goes to sleep while in use, it occasionally won't turn on after idling, and the keyboard is sometimes unresponsive so I have to re-attach it and/or restart the tablet. - The advertised specs are clearly exaggerated. For example, the battery lasts only about 6 hrs with just a browser running (including idle time), instead of the advertised 13.5 hrs. Also, the processing speed can get frustratingly slow at times (as I write my review, I have to wait a few seconds for the text to catch up with what I typed). - To justify the price of this product, Office should really be included. But, it's not. Instead, you either have to pay for annual subscription service or a one-time fee for the "classic" version (which will become outdated as soon as Microsoft comes out with a new update). - Windows needs to catch up with modern day. Several popular apps (like Prime Video and Google Photos) are not available in Windows, and some that are available (like Instagram) are clunky versions that are easier to use on a phone. - Finally, part of my negative review is for Best Buy itself: They only allow 2 weeks for returns, even for computers. To me, that's not enough time to evaluate a computer's performance. When I first started using the Surface Pro, I had an inkling it wasn't what I expected, but I thought maybe I just needed to get used to it. It wasn't until about a month later, after the return window had closed, that I realized just how much I regretted the purchase. Bottom line: This should really be a much cheaper product (like 250-350 range). The selling point that it's a lightweight, 2-in-1 *laptop* that converts into a tablet is misleading. Really, it's just a tablet with potential to become a Frankenstein laptop if you spend hundreds more on accessories (which you notice are readily and eagerly advertised). Looking back, I wish I had gone with a Chromebook, or just sucked it up and invested a bit more in a Mac. Either one would have been a much better value.

Purchased the Surface Pro 6 as an upgrade to the Surface Pro 4. I have the i5 model, 8 gigs ram, 128 gig SSD. Hardware: Solid, cold metal construction, high quality feel. Light-weight and easy to hold in one hand, though the size may make one handed use difficult for long periods of time. The kick stand is significantly improved from years past, it maintains its position without any flex or wiggle. It continues to be a key feature, and makes this a great device for table, lap, counter use. The port selection is decent for most things. The charging port is magnetic, charging speed is adequate. The single USB port is good enough for most things, though power users may need a splitter. The power and volume buttons are solid. Keyboard: Much improved from years past, very good key action and travel. Feels pillowy and satisfying. Track pad is fairly large and soft to the touch, very nice. Display: One of the highest resolution, highest quality screens you can get on any device, absolutely a steal at this price point. Pixels are very hard to see unless you get very close to the screen. Contrast levels are excellent, viewing angles are top-notch. This is one of the best displays you will ever see on a laptop or tablet. Touch response is quick, accurate, a real pleasure to use. Software: Windows 10 Home is a joy to use, as always. The OS seems to be fairly well adapted to touch screen use, just like it is keyboard and mouse. Quick, responsive. The Solid State Drive makes things just fly, including restarting the computer. Conclusion: The best machine for most people. The best screen, and nearly the best typing experience especially considering it is a convertible. Highly recommend this device to almost anybody.

I'm astonished by this piece of marvel as a both a software developer and an IT infrastructure specialist who formally worked in computer hardware maintenance. I already own a workstation to carry over all the huge work-load. but I need something I can take to a library that will have the full computing power of a normal computer, despite the fact I sometimes find myself carrying a workstation notebook computer for work and need a super light solution to tuck along with it. the Surface Pro i5 addressed all my needs and had only one short coming that I'm willing to live with. Pros addressed (Power modes) - Battery saver turns this unit operational for multiple days of usage! or 1 full day non-stop operation used this while travelling, browsing and light editing of photos I took (~10 hours per charge) - Standard Performance gives you the power of a dual core laptop (yes really) anything from compiling code, bulk editing photos or music, heavy office multi tasking etc. the RAM can handle it like knife through warm butter. - Max Performance - I call this the Emergency Switch as I believe this should never be used outside the purposes of 4K Rendering, Heavy Duting Data restructuring, Whenever you find yourself doing something you're not supposed to be doing on a laptop, such as gaming, 4k professional rendering, CAD designs, heavy framework and AI projects. you'll need this mode. you MUST get the i7 Fan powered version to use this mode. I cannot stress this enough YOU MUST. because the i5 version is FANLESS and will reach a 100c in ~15 minutes of operation. Make sure you know upfront what is your intent of the Surface you buy. do you want a better energy machine for everyday work. or you want a hardcore 3D design monster, filmmaking, or DJ at a party. is this your full-powered workstation unit? or a library / café companion?. As library companion I have went through dozens of laptops (don't judge me) from macbook pro, to Lenovo Yoga Pro, and macbook air. you will NOT find an even near equivalent of this master-piece. I firmly believe that Windows 10 entirely was built to work for this machine.

I've been a traditional laptop user for many years, I bought my most recent laptop in 2010 as a top of the line Samsung (i7, 1tb HDD, dedicated graphics, ect). It served me well and last me through college, and my first major job. As I've settled into my new position, now years later, i'm noticing there is a significant slow down even opening a browser or spreadsheet. Im meetings or on the go it's pretty apparent that my needs are evolving and lunking around a 9lb laptop isn't feasible. Que in the Surface Pro. A few of the guys use SP4 which i've admired for its slim build and overall sleekness. I've had reservations about the amount of a power that a 'tablet' could truly possess but i've been met with "just try it". A couple weeks ago the internal battery died on my laptop and I figured now was the time to upgrade. So while shopping at BB the guy recommended I look into the ultra portable SP6 as they were on sale. I'M GLAD I DID. This thing is amazing. It hits all the right points. Its light, very responsive, and has windows 10 loaded right out the box. A few settings changes later and i'm back to normal. Being windows based any program I needed is compatible, The battery life is amazing. Speakers are great, The type cover feels great when typing and using the touch pad is simple. I've even managed to get a little light gaming done in my off time. You may want to consider i7 16gb SP or a SB for video or music editing TLDR; this is the perfect all around 2:1 for anyone looking to break into the scene and replace an existing laptop.

I bought a SP6 because I had heard Microsoft had taken strides to improve battery life and I like the idea behind a hybrid tablet. Battery life is indeed better, but relative to other tablets (e.g. iPad) the battery life still leaves a lot to be desired. Maybe 7 hours with normal use; other Windows devices can do a lot better. Windows just still doesn’t act as a good tablet OS; apps run hidden in the background, some apps aren’t optimized for touch, and it’s slow in ways that surprise (e.g. launching apps), and the Windows App Store still has a ton of garbage software. Very few of the apps you’d expect to see on a tablet/mobile device. The fact that it also doesn’t haven any USB-C ports came as a pretty big disappointment too. So not great as a tablet; what about as a laptop? Eh. The keyboard is an extra $130 or so; it’s decent but connects to the tablet in a flimsy manner that requires some yoga positions to hold steady in the lap. The kickstand is nice, no arguments there, but think about it: to type with it in your lap, you’re basically balancing three thin points of connection to keep it sturdy. The iPad doesn’t have much articulation and the keyboard is flat, but it’s sturdy: you can pick the whole thing up by just the keyboard. The battery and power are middle-of-the-road for a windows laptop; if you get the $899 i5 model it’s not a bad deal except you still have to buy a keyboard. No pen is included anymore, so I didn’t try that. On the SP4 it was okay. If you want a Windows tablet, I can’t imagine that any is better than the Surface when all is considered. However, if want you want is an iPad-like tablet, this is not the device for you. I thought I’d get this instead of a new iPad Pro based on things I’d read, and it clear to me that either I’m just not interested in going back to Windows at all or I’m just too used to the ease and reliability of iOS in a tablet.

The Surface Pro 2-in-1 was best in class for past couple of years and even though they may not be any longer it is still and very solid device. The flexibility, size, and lightweight design make it a good fit for the traveler or student on the go. Running the full OS puts it high above then gimpy chromebook and Surface Go devices from a business perspective. The detachable keyboard is either loved or cursed it makes for a pure tablet mode that a folded back keyboard prevents other devices from achieving. There are a few cons that in my mind knock 2 stars off immediately. Microsoft needs to step off and back away from the mini display port ASAP. There this thing called USB-C. Plus to still have only a single USB on it is laughable. Then computing power in proportion to pricing is puzzling to me. They have dropped quite a bit for the 4GB and 8Gb i5 models which is good since it was hot 2 years ago. But to get an i7 16GB models is $2000. The x1 yoga $1600 and it comes with PCie interface NVMe1 protocol m2 chipset. Destroys the read write of surface pro and that’s not even factoring speeds over usb-c vs usb3.0. Revamp needed prior to version 7’ release or MS may have a whole lot of overpriced underperforming coasters lying around.

I traded in my Surface Pro 3 for this machine, did/could not want to hold out for something with USB-C. The performance is an enormous improvement over everything but my gaming PC! This handy device has me questioning if I really need to bring my laptop anywhere, the 8th gen quad core i5 is on par or slightly better than my laptops 7th gen i7 laptop. Absolutely beautiful screen, especially compared to my girlfriend's iPad Pro... the two machines aren't even close to competitors. The Surface Pro 6 beats the iPad on every level except Instagram and Facebook consumption! This is a serious workhorse that has more than enough battery and power for work or play! I would recommend upgraded the latest Surface pen, especially if you're upgrading from an older SP, huge reduction in latency and a noticeably better "pen to paper" feel. If you have the SP4 pen, you'll be more than fine using that and saving the money if you choose. Lastly, coming from a Surface Pro 3 (with it's sharper, angled edges), there is a night and day improvement in the "hold-ability!" It feels lighter, is easier to keep in one hand, and the bezels are the perfect size for those with bigger hands, no palm overlap and no false touches!

I bought this one to replace my SP4 that worked very well. I've been a fan of these since that purchase. I love it for school. I love it for home. It works. excellent in any environment. I get a glass screen protector for when I use the pen just in case because I don't want to mess up the screen. I'd recommend this to anyone who doesn't own an apple because the app store is completely different. But anyone constantly on the go will benefit from this due to its versatility and light weight. I only gave it 4 stars because I wanted the black one but it only came with 256 gb SSD but with so many microSD cards, and an external hard drive, I don't need that much internal storage. It bothers me that they just couldn't make it in black or other colors regardless of the software. Hopefully in the future they start offering different color Surface Pros.

I really wanted to like the Surface Pro, I travel several times a year and need to stay on line for both of my careers and thought this would do the trick. But when I am not traveling wanted to be able to use it as a tablet like I do my iPad. I liked the idea of the key board and having a mouse. I use a regular pc for both of my jobs and and use Office 354 for both so thought I would have not problems. Beside being very heavy it is not good to consider this as a tablet, There were just many functions I disliked on this, it refused to let me have my two separate Office 365 emails, I found it to be much slower than an iPad and my pc and became very frustrated with it within 4 days of which case I returned it to Best Buy. Thankful that Best Buy made it easy to return because I would have been very upset having to keep this. If you want a lap top I would guess it would be OK but there are so many other lap tops on the market I would definitely not chose this, as a tablet it's a definite NO.

I bought this for work and must say it's nice to have around. The battery life is pretty good; I think you can get 6+ hrs if you're surfing the web or using low power programs. I bought the silver Surface with the Burgundy keyboard, pen and mouse and it looks and works great. This is the i5 with 8gb of ram. Strong performance, but always room to get more power, just don't want to burn a hole in my pocket. My only gripe with this tablet is how every accessory costs so much and Microsoft makes sure that every little thing you want to add is pricey. I know companies need to make money, but the tablet starts already at $700, at least throw something extra in. *This has the 128gb of internal memory. I strongly recommend buying an extra 256gb micro SD or higher. 128gb just won't cut it. Otherwise, this thing is light, strong and fast. I also really like that you can connect a hard drive as well. USB port is a huge plus. Worth a buy.

This is the third Surface device purchased in the last 5 years. The first one was the original (smaller, less powerful) Surface. The second one failed after less than 2 years - and could not be repaired - which forced this purchase. That said, this is one of the most versatile portable tools I have ever used. it is as powerful as my desktop computer in my main office and provides everythingI need for file access, presentations, and general work while on the road. The fact that I have come back to this product - and to BestBuy - three times is an additional endorsement.

My surface pro is light and small enough it could fit in my purse if I wanted but has all the function of a larger laptop. I purchased to replace a Mac Air which had died, I love the mac but several of my programs had to be on pc and I never could get hang of the mac. I have been able to use the pc to easily install my programs and move files by myself. The salesperson was great. he listened to what I wanted in laptop and showed me the surface pro but was not pushy. He answered my questions and really knew the computers. I love that it can function like a tablet or use like laptop with the keyboard attached. Haven't found any cons yet. Pros are it is light, quick and able to do my design programs easily.

I've had the laptop for a couple of weeks now since I have started school. I'm still learning the features. I like that I'm able to write notes on the screen while I have an assignment open; similar to a double screen. The touch screen feature is amazing, along with the pen. These features make homework easy to do and plus I save paper. So happened today I am having trouble when I remove the keyboard to go into tablet mode as it does not stay on the current screen rather it goes onto the menu screen. Not sure if that's normal but I have trouble getting back to my internet screen, until I reattach the keyboard. I spent less than a 1k on the keyboard, pen, and tablet during a sale, so that was a plus.

The Surface Pro became a must for my design company. I design while on the road quite often. I have to lug around an art box with my basic necessities. That box is about 15”x15”x4”. Too much. In addition to that, I have to scan my art to my laptop. I can design, scan, send, etc from this one piece of equipment. Along with Clip Art EX, this Surface replaces all of that. I purchased the $899 Pro 6 and it is super fast. I have successfully tested my current equipment including an external LG Blu-ray player model AP70NS50, Canon Pixma 3620 printer, Visio external 24” monitor via AVA-7200-06B, USA-4800 multi functional (card reader, USB 3.0 hub and direct Ethernet connect) USB dongle and iMac mouse on this unit.

I started out with a lenovo miix, to save money, not realizing the huge difference between the two machines. I liked it but it was always having little issues, and it pooped out on me right on the 1 year mark and the warranty was barely expired. Lenovo customer service was the worst. So instead of getting another one, I went with the Surface Pro. I cant even tell you how much better the quality of the Surface pro is! From the keyboard and pen to the tablet/laptop, this thing out rocks the miix 10x's over! Hands down the favorite laptop I have ever had! Cant believe I wasted my money on the miix first!

Unfortunately I had this tablet stolen a week after buying it so I did not get to explore all the new upgrades, but was pleased enough that I will be buying the same one again to replace the stolen one and hope to keep the next a little longer this time. Used it for email and basic office stuff, PowerPoint, Word etc. Would be good for students. Would recommend

This was an upgrade and replacement for my crashed laptop. Originally purchased for personal use but now doubles as my office when I work from home. With access to Microsoft Office and cloud storage it's a convenient choice. I have the i5 and it's quick on response when accessing the web and applications. I purchased the keyboard cover, pen and MS mouse and loving every bit. The pen came in especially handy when I presented a power point and allowed me to easily move through slides with the click of the pen. The convienence of having both a tablet & laptop in this sleek design is amazing.

I bought this for my son for his school work. He has had experience with Apple products (iPhone and Tablet) and Google products (school uses some Google Chrome laptops). He mentioned the other day that he loves his Surface and it much better than the other products: ease of use, speed, convenience, sync with main computer/Microsoft Office. I also noticed he installed Steam so he does some light gaming when not doing "work". The only down side is that I had to buy the keyboard separately. I wish they had it bundled it with the Surface (the bundle came out a few months after I bought this, lol) :((

I am really enjoying returning to the Surface Pro. For a few years I tried to use an iPad as my all-around productivity device, and so many jobs just took too long or were just plain impossible. If you have used a Surface Pro in the past few years, everything is pretty much the same, with the bonus of a speedier processor and improved battery life. The screen is still a pleasure to use, and touch sensitivity to your fingers or with the Surface Pen is great. I just wish that a USB-C port was present for better future-proofing, and that the pen was included for the price.
