Simple, basic necessity for a Surface Pro

I've owned a Surface or Surface Pro device since the Surface 3 LTE was released, and have been happy with each in its turn. However, I continue to be mystified by Microsoft's choice to sell a solid tablet/laptop replacement device (such as the current Surface Pro) completely hamstrung as a bare-box item, which is almost non-functional as it comes. As anyone who owns or has ever used a Surface/Surface Pro can tell you, a keyboard is essential on these devices. The ability to use the surface pen to hand-write is wonderful, and the on-screen keyboard HAS improved, but a keyboard/type cover is an absolute must for any serious Surface user. Having owned multiple versions of the Surface Type Cover, I believe Microsoft has finally finished tweaking the design of these keyboards and has it where it needs to be. While the old keyboards tended to feel a bit clunky, with poor key travel/sensation, awful backlighting options, and a touchpad that was both too-small and too sensitive, these issues have been fixed in the current version. Additionally, the keyboard now has "dedicated" buttons for adjusting the Surface's screen brightness, as well as the keyboard's backlighting, something which earlier versions lacked. These buttons are the primary usage for the function keys, which does require you to be cognizant of the state of the "Fn" button lock if you're inclined to using keyboard commands to close windows or applications. There are two issues which I've noticed with this version of the Surface Pro Type Cover. The first is the habit of the surface to turn on auto-rotate mode and attempt to set itself to tablet mode, even when the keyboard is connected, when I first hit the space bar, as when waking up the screen. It seems like the Surface Pro LTE-A (2017 model) is acting like there's a keyboard shortcut for rotation mode or tablet mode tied to spacebar some of the time, but I can't find any evidence of such a command listed anywhere. Finally, there is only a single 'Control' key on the left side of the keyboard. The key layout is Control, Fn Lock, Windows, Alt, Spacebar, Alt, Menu Key (right click), arrows. I would really have valued a control key on the right side of the keyboard as well, perhaps in place of the rarely-used menu key. Overall this is a solid Surface Pro Type Cover which fits the most recent versions of the Surface Pro (4 & 2017), and will work with the Surface Pro 3. This version lacks the current Alcantara fabric covering, which makes it easier to wipe clean (the Alcantara is prone to staining). It also does not have the fingerprint scanner, which I have not found necessary given the accuracy of the IR camera. If you have a Surface Pro, you need a keyboard - this one is well worth the purchase.

      Hi there,

Wow! We appreciate you sharing such a detailed and thoughtful review. Thanks for calling out the improvements made since the previous models. To change the settings for tablet mode, visit the Windows 10 settings under "Tablet Mode" to control when if ever your device switches into tablet mode. We appreciate your continued investment in the Surface line. We'll be sure to forward your feedback to our team for review.

      All the best,

    Good for Portable Use

Good for portable use and some desktop. I use a real keyboard for serious work, though, through a dock with a standalone monitor and mouse. Light enough to not worry about taking along, but sturdy enough to be a screen protector. Works well on the move with cases that let you also use the kickstand as they usually also have a cover that extends from the unfolded kickstand and under the keyboard, giving a lot more anti-wobble rigidity that's not there with just the keyboard. Not to say the keyboard doesn't give reasonable anti-wobble support, just that the right case makes everything a lot better. However, don't be surprised/dismayed if you see one of the plushie, special color covers on sale below the price of this one. I picked up a more expensive cover for below this cover's price one day when a Surface Pro 3 keyboard broke and I needed to replace it.

If you buy a Surface Pro, you need to have a keyboard. Microsoft should just increase the price of the Surface Pro and add the keyboard for FREE. I bought the PC over a year and a half ago and have had issues using it ever since. It got so bad I was going to sell the device. Then I bought the keyboard when my primary PC wasn't working. I now love my Surface Pro! It is officially my backup PC and so much easier for travel. The only issue I'm having is sometimes there is a lag from the time you type and the time it reaches the PC, especially if you're a quick typist. The keyboard also gets in the way when you want to use the Surface Pro as a tablet. But I love how the keyboard also doubles as a protector for the PC screen.

I’ve seen other people’s reviews about the type covers mouse pad quits working & thought maybe it’s just by chance they got one that does this but mine completely stops working at least 20 times a day & it’s beyond annoying. $125 for a type cover made specifically for the SP6 & from day 1 these issues get worse. My opinion is they should go back to the drawing board & take a page out of Brydges design book & completely redesign this cheaply made POS that’s EXTREMELY overpriced. Do yourself a favor if you’ll be using your SP6 all day for work & purchase another keyboard.

I am very happy with the way this keyboard works with the Surface Pro, the magnetic coupling is great. As soon as I get the keyboard close to the tablet it snaps perfectly into place with no adjustment needed and works. It also looks good when not in use, folds up nicely over the screen for protection and has a pleasant overall look. The only complaint I have would be that when I have the Surface propped up and the keyboard out there is nothing supporting the keyboard which can make the mouse difficult to use. I think this is minor gripe and am very happy with how the keyboard has operated so far.

The keyboard itself hasnt had any issues, the only issue is just me getting initially getting used to not being able to pick up the computer by the keyboad like I would with previous laptop. The keyboard works much better then my previous laptop (Lenovo) which I had to send in twice to get fixed before i just dealt with its issues. This one has not cause me any troubles at this point. Its super light and effecient for travel. I also like that it magnetically clicks in to the Surface Pro (I hate calling it a tablet, because its really so much more then that. Over all, very satisfied

I use a Surface Pro 4 and this keyboard is a must. I tried a different keyboard first, which connected via Bluetooth and this Microsoft keyboard definitely was an upgrade. It connects flawlessly and it doesn’t have any sort of lag as my other Bluetooth keyboard had. The mouse pad is also amazing, very responsive to touch and gestures. It is lightweight. It clicks and unclicks to your device very nicely when you have to change from laptop to tablet mode. I would say that it is not very comfortable for extensive hours of typing. But, if you take breaks, you will be ok.

Yeah, like so many others I wish this keyboard was standard with the Surface Pro, but I can understand why it is not. Regardless, it is well worth the extra money as the magnetic attachment between the keyboard and the Pro is seemless. The backlighting is very nice also. It may feel a bit flimsy at first when comparing to a real laptop (not a 2-in-1) but the build is plenty sturdy. I also love how easily it folds up over the face of the Pro, making it oh so easy to transport, like carrying a light hard cover book.

Still getting use to the compressed keyboard layout, I'm still hitting the = key instead of the backspace key. But it is fast, responsive, and looks great on my Platinum Surface Pro 6. I do knock a star off because of the compressed layout but that's not bestbuy's fault. There is only so much space in this form factor. I do like the ease it connect, how it protects the screen, and I love the back cover. This is a high quality product that looks great on another high quality product.

The keyboard is obviously made for the microsoft surface. It is the same brand and produced specifically for this product. I gave 4 stars because this is the second one that I had to get for a surface product. The previous one started acting up (some buttons not registering when pressed, etc.). I question the quality of the product if it does not last as long as the computer. Otherwise, it is a working keyboard attachment for the surface computer.

Overall, the detachable keyboard works great. I'm especially glad that the keys have backlighting. When attached, the keyboard locks in tight. If I have anything less than perfect to say, it would be that the keys are slightly spongy. But in all fairness, I've been using a MacBook Pro the past several years. The keys on the Mac are terrible. So, my comment about spongy keys may be unwarranted.

The type cover has come along way since The first generation surface tab. The ability to raise the keyboard up is a much better design. And I find both the keys are more responsive and the touchpad is more robust. The only downside is not functionality, but aesthetics. The soft backside, which becomes the viewable cover when closed, is easily scratchable and now appears much more dated than it is. Doesn’t not affect functionality though.

I purchased the keyboard when I purchased the surface pro. I like how easy it is to remove or snap on. I like that it can be positioned to make the surface a laptop, tablet or used as a stand. My only concern is when the keyboard is folded back to use as a stand the keys are face down. They don't write which is good but I'm worried about damaging the keys.

As devices get smaller and smaller, Microsoft has done a good job with the layout and proportions of the type cover to feel like you have more space than you really do. There are a variety of colors available to fit your style, just wish the alternative colors didn't come with a price premium. Happy enough to go with the black cover to save a few bucks.

I bought this mainly because the screen needs some protection. To be honest, I never thought the typing experience on a keyboard like this could be that good. The keys are well spaced. They have a decent amount of key travel and the weight of the keys is just right. In addition, the trackpad on this is probably the best in class for windows devices. It is smooth and accurate.

I bought the tablet and added the keyboard to go along with it, even though it has touch screen on the tablet. The only thing I don't like is that when you move or lift the tablet up the keyboard disconnects from the tablet to easy, I have drop it a couple of time, thank god it was on the carpet and was not from any height that would of damaged it. It is easy to type on!

The connection between the Surface Pro and the "cover" (which is really just the external keyboard) is excellent. Snaps into place with no effort. The stand is sturdy. My one comment is that when you close the "lid/screen" onto the "cover/keyboard", the stand, if deployed, makes it a bit topheavy. The "cover/keyboard" serves as a protective cover, but I bought a sleeve anyway.

I purchased this keyboard a few months after getting the computer. I had another cheaper keyboard I was using. It finally gave up so I went and purchased this. I do not regret my decision at all. I just wish I would have had the money to buy it sooner. It is definitely worth it. It is nice that it flips up for added protection for the screen.

I do love my Surface Pro, but was shocked to find out that the keyboard was not included in the price. It costs an extra $130! I never heard of such a thing. The keyboard works good, once in a while there is a cliche and it does not connect to the Surface Pro. I need to close and reopen the program and then it works ok.

My daughter selected the Surface & accessories for her high school graduation gift and loves them. She has now started her college classes & will be able to read her digital textbooks, take notes, and highlight passages easily. She also designed her room layout and shared it with her roommate prior to stepping foot on campus. We love the versatility of the Surface.
