A clever keyboard that adds value to Windows 8

A keyboard’s primary mission is input and it is frankly amazing how many variations on this simple task manufacturers have come up with in the PC era. Microsoft has been among the companies on the leading edge of innovation with keyboards, starting with its highly praised “natural” series and with several other interesting designs, some more successful than others. I suspect the Wedge Mobile Keyboard introduced for Windows 8 will be considered another of these innovations. I had read a number of reviews on tech websites about the Wedge Mobile. All of these reviewers mentioned the keyboard is small, yet still large enough for descent typing speeds. Despite this advanced knowledge, I was still struck by the diminutive size of the keyboard. As an aside, Microsoft has learned something about packaging. The Wedge Mobile comes in a box with a hinged lid that resembles the shape of the keyboard. The box has just enough information on it. There is a ribbon handle attached. The keyboard presents itself immediately upon opening the box while the cover, batteries, and documentation sit below this shelf. The box and the insides are all cardboard. While packaging is a transitory thing, it is nice when an innovative product is wrapped in a package that shows that was also thoughtfully designed. The Wedge takes its name from the fact it naturally sits at a shallow angle to make typing easier. Instead of the foldable feet we often see on portable keyboard, the Wedge elevation comes from the compartment on the underside that contains the batteries. The battery compartment opens with a push on the end of the compartment. Two AAA batteries fit easily in the slide out tray, which does not slide all the way out so it can’t get lost. The opposite end of the battery compartment contains a push button switch for the Bluetooth transceiver. No dongles or adapters are necessary. After you turn on the keyboard for the first time, pushing the Bluetooth button puts the keyboard in discovery mode for 6 minutes. A tiny LED light blinks alternately red and green to indicate discovery mode. My Samsung Series 7 tablet connected easily after entering the one-time passcode on the tablet’s built in keypad. You can turn the keyboard off again manually if you want and then on and off yourself as needed, but then you’d miss one of the two real talents of the included rubberized cover. When your work session is done, hook one end of the cover onto the one of the short sides of the keyboard and then snap the opposite end in place. Your keyboard is amply protected, and the cover turns the keyboard off. Removing the keyboard automatically switches the keyboard back on. The cover’s other talent is that of acting as a stand for a tablet device. A crease running through the middle of the covers width marks where you are to bend it for use as a stand. The same edges you use to hook the cover to the keyboard double a holder for the bottom edge of your tablet. The cover will stay at the angle you determine is best for your viewing. My Series 7 already has a cover that can double as a stand, yet the Wedge Mobile cover still held the heavy-ish Series 7 steady as a rock. Typing on the Wedge Mobile is its primary function. I found this very easy to do. There is enough tactile feedback from these nearly full size keys to make the keyboard minimally comfortable to use. It is certainly not as comfortable as a full size keyboard, but I was able to use it for long periods without cramping or excessive mistakes. The twelve function keys double as media control keys and as the Print Screen, Home, End, Page Up, and Page Down and Delete keys. Four of the function keys also serve as Windows 8 charm keys. The arrows keys are grouped nicely at the lower right edge of the keyboard. While they are smaller than normal, they are large enough for easy use in navigating the Windows 8 Start Screen. The Windows key obviously returns you the Start Screen or, if you are already there, to the app you were using last. The key I call the “right button” key on a Windows keyboard brings up the same contextual menus as the right mouse button on Windows 7 and on the Windows 8 desktop app. On the Start Screen and in the “Metro” style apps, the key open the app bar. I think it is fair to say that this keyboard (and presumably any others made for Windows 8) gives proof to Microsoft’s claim that Windows 8 works as well on a mouse and keyboard as it does with touch. I didn’t think this was true when I used Windows 8 on a laptop that came with Windows 7, but I’ve used my tablet strictly with the keyboard without an issue. A bit more detail. The keyboard base is aluminum. It is matte on the back. Other than Microsoft’s new logo and the wedge compartment, the only other feature on the bottom is a narrow rubber strip near the front edge which helps keep the keyboard from sliding during use. The aluminum base edges are polished to a nice shine, but are narrow enough that fingerprints are not likely to be a problem. The keyboard itself has a nice matte finish, with large characters in the center of the keys. The function key and the F1 through 12 marks are in a very subtle grey color that is much harder to see. There is absolutely no wasted space on this keyboard. This means some keys (like the Home and End keys I mentioned earlier) are probably not where you expect them to be and will take getting used to. The Wedge Mobile keyboard is priced at $79, which is a bit high. Yet it is a well designed and built device, which will make using Windows 8 a better experience.

I made a pre-meditated decision NOT to purchase either of the MS Keyboard covers available at launch when I got my Surface Pro. As soon as it appeared that some form of powered dock would be available down the road, I didn't want to invest in a soon to be obsolete keyboard and I was tempted to see how functional the on-screen keyboard would be. The touchscreen is not bad for minimal consumption, so I found myself in need of a keyboard after roughly a week with the Surface Pro. The one thing that has annoyed me with Windows Bluetooth accessories is the nano transceiver. With the Surface Pro only having one USB port, I don't want it occupied by a nano transceiver. When I found out the Wedge Keyboard didn't have the annoying nano transceiver, I was willing to give it a try. My only hesitation being the $79.99 price tag. I went to Amazon and found it new for $49. I had Best Buy match the price and am THOROUGHLY impressed with it. It comes with a cover that doubles as a stand, that works quite well. Comes in handy as I sometimes use my Surface Po on carpet and the Wedge Keyboard cover provides a more stable base than the kickstand on the Surface Pro. Microsoft nailed the packaging without mimicking Apple products packaging. Setup and pairing of the keyboard was "Apple-smooth" as the gap between Apple and Windows ease of use has become virtually unnoticeable. There is a spring loaded battery cover that is Star Trek-esque in operation. The cover doesn't come completely off and opens and closes with an elegant, but firm movement. This was the most impressive feature that reinforced the well conceived packaging. The keyboard is small and may not work for larger hands. It appears to be roughly the same size as the Surface Touch Cover. The keys have a bit more spring tough. The keyboard powers off and on when the cover is removed and replaced...another nice touch. I decided to complement the Wedge Keyboard with the Wedge Mouse #unfortunately Best Buy is not carrying it yet# and I am just as impressed with the mouse. In summation, I had low to average expectations for the keyboard and expected to be returning it, but MS has produced a winner. The Amazon price-match seals the deal!

    Wedge Keyboard for NookHD

I purchased this keyboard hoping that it would work with my Nook HD and productivity apps (mainly word processing), and it does exactly that! I will say though, if you plan to pair this with a nook hd first pair it with your pc or another bluetooth enabled device because the first time it is paired it will require a four digit code (0000), and since there is no option to add a code on the nook, you need to pair it first with a pc and change the settings so that it does not require a code in order to pair with another device. It's pretty simple. I also love that the cover can act like a stand and when you cover the keyboard it actually turns it off. The case is pretty heavy duty, I just throw it into my messenger bag and I really don't have to worry about it getting scratched or jostled in there. Overall it is a nicely designed keyboard that allows me to do what I wanted!

Personally, I like a keyboard that has bluetooth capability and is compatible with both PC and smartphone / tablet and this keyboard fits into that category, unlike some others. I like that it has a simple design and comes with a cover that you can also use as a stand for your tablet or smartphone. There are hot keys for Windows 8; I haven't tried them on other Windows versions to see if they work or not. As far as for smartphones and tablets, the hot keys for Play/Pause, Mute, Volume Up, Volume Down are the only ones that will work. I like the feel of the keys which makes typing easy. The keyboard is not bulky and is easy to carry with you (fits into my purse). Sure, it was a bit pricey compared to some other keyboards, but overall, great keyboard.

I bought the Microsoft Wedge Bluetooth keyboard to use with an iPad 2 on business and personal trips. It makes typing for emails and other applications so much easier and faster! The keyboard is close enough to full size that it doesn't affect your normal typing motion. The keys have a great response - typing on the Wedge keyboard feels much better than typing on my normal laptop keyboard. The Wedge keyboard feels very sturdy and well-built and has the look of a quality product. The rubber cover is heavy duty and attaches very securely. The Wedge keyboard was easy to pair with my iPad. I like that it connects very quickly with the iPad 2 when I remove the cover to activate the keyboard. It was definitely worth a little extra money to get the Microsoft Wedge keyboard.

I have a Samsung Galaxy Note, and bought the keyboard to more easily connect to remote machines with apps like ConnectBot. While the keyboard is very responsive and easy to connect, the one thing that has bugged me about it is that once the keyboard connects, the tablet reverts back to its default screen keyboard layout, which has no mapping for the Ctrl or Alt characters (very important when using SSH/shell interfaces). Short of 'rooting' the tablet, I have not yet found anything that provides a workaround, so unfortunately it's not 100% compatible with my needs. While this is most likely more of a software issue than a problem with the keyboard, it's still something to note.

Great keyboard. I pair this with my Nexus 7 to type out what I want to, and it's amazing. The cover acts as a tablet stand, and the keyboard itself is incredibly lightweight, compact and wonderful to use. Better than this desktop keyboard I'm using right now. The special Windows keys don't really work on an Android tablet, but this is still probably the best keyboard to use for your tablet of any kind. The cover (which turns on the keyboards BT when removed, and turns the BT off when the cover is placed back on) is just icing on the cake. Wonderful product.

I bought this keyboard blindly to use with my tablet hoping to take full advantage of my word processing software. I was pleased that it did that. What made me happier though was that the keyboard automatically shuts off when covered with the keyboard cover, or when it sits on the cover which extends the battery life. I've been using it for a few months now and still havent changed the batteries.

In a world of over hyped products with mediocre performance, this critical reviewer is more than happy with this purchase. Keyboard met needs and expectations for use with nexus7. Easy synch. Small but ideal size and weight. Most importantly--- you can actually type proficiently. A bit pricey, but you get what you pay for here.

I am in love with this keyboard. It works great with my Kindlefire HD. The case doubles as a tablet stand and it fits nicely in my purse. It is so easy to type - just like a laptop or PC. It has effectively turned my Kindlefire into a laptop!

I have two different types of blue tooth keyboards and this one is my favorite. It is durable and easy to transport. I use it for multiple devices and it is very easy to type on. I wish it had a better keyboard cover and a way to turn it on and off to keep from using up the batteries so quickly.

It connected to my devices with no problem and works great. Only problem is getting it to connect or power on at times. I'm sure it's just me hitting the power t's not needed and turning it off.
