    "Wheel of Frustration"

    Posted
    Fretless33

This is from something I posted on Xbox.com forums: OK...final thoughts...I decided to return the "wheel of frustration" as I couldn't take it any more. I tried it with force feedback, I tried it without force feedback, could never get the pedals to feel right and had to put shoes on to get them to be comfortable, without shoes I had to leave my feet hanging off the couch (not touching the ground) to be able to work the gas and brake effectively...try that for an endurance race and you got some sore legs afterwards. The lap position for the steering wheel was OK, but never felt quite right and I wasn't about to buy a small table to try the mount (since I was already convinced by then to return the wheel). That was only the set up portion...the actual performance was terrible. I'm sure if I was raised on a wireless racing wheel it would have been better, but I'm not exaggerating when I say I was 5 times faster with the controller! I could barely finish a lap with the wheel, so when I finally got frustrated enough (and wanted to throw the wheel across the room) and plugged in the controller I would finish the race without crashing, nearly lapping the AI cars in the same race!!! This happened on Xbox Live too, while we were racing stock BMW's and I couldn't even keep up with the pack, I switched back to the controller and the same group was wondering what happened to me...how I got so much faster (since I won the race by a few seconds). It was obvious that I was not meant to use this racing wheel...It was interesting and different at first, I was going to give it more of a chance and wait until Forza 3 came out to start from scratch, I was sure I just needed to practice more with the wheel, but I can't take it any more...I like to win races, not crash and be out of control!!! The pro's for me was it actually smoothed out the steering of the higher end cars (R class cars) and I wasn't so "twitchy" in the straightaways, I was able to hold my line better (when I could stay on the track) and the force feedback was pretty cool because you can actually feel when your front tires are loosing grip! However, the overall lack of control and loss of performance is way too frustrating for me! Final judgement...I wouldn't recommend this wheel if you're accustomed to racing with a controller...it's gonna kill your fun and performance!

This wheel kept me playing Forza 2 for hours! I am an 'old school' gamer and I could never get the hang of using a joystick to drive. Keep in mind that this is the 're-released' version of the Xbox 360 Wireless Racing Wheel and thus it only includes a demo of Forza 2. The older models were recalled by MS, so beware of used ones. First things first, the box that this wheel comes in is HUGE! The upside to the large box is that everything is put together and all you need to do is unpack the wheel and pedals and plug them together. You are going to want to plug the wheel into the wall and use the full feedback features. I don't think too many people are going to spend this kind of money on a racing wheel to sit on their sofa and play with the wheel on their lap 'wirelessly'. The benefit of the wireless part is that you don't need to worry about using up a USB port on the front of you Xbox 360 to plug this in. Connecting is easy, push the sync button on your console and on the wheel. Like magic they each recognize each other and you are in business. After plugging the foot pedals into the wheel via a little cable that looks like a telephone wire you are set to race. Feedback on Forza 2 was amazing! Understeer, bumps, warning strips, you feel everything. Pros: Top notch feel and finish, no corners cut on cheap plastic or details. Works right out of the box. No drivers to fumble with. Feedback (while connected to power source) is excellent. Clamping system is easy to understand and use. Doesn't tie up a spot on your Xbox USB ports. Cons: Minor- you need to find the right table/surface to mount this on. It is heavy! Minor- clamping system is excellent, however, after a long race it may move and need readjusting. Conclusion: Spend a few extra bucks and buy this wheel. I think the smiles that you will get from finding out how much fun racing games can be with this setup will be worth every penny! Let me preface by saying I have only used this wheel with Forza 3 and am heavily biased towards simulator style racing. If you have any racing game made in the last couple years the wheel will work without the installation of anything. If you don't it comes with a demo game that will work. Please note it's not entirely wireless. If you want to use force feedback it has to be plugged into the wall and there is a wire from the pedals to the wheel. The wheel greatly increased the fun and satisfaction I get from playing Forza, although it took probably 8-10 hours of play time before I was completely comfortable with the wheel and this is normal for anyone switching from a controller. Give it time and you'll love it. The wheel itself feels solid and the force feedback is very believable. The pedals are acceptable but I had to build and inclined holder to get them comfortable and stable. I reccomend clamping this down to a table and sit in a hard back chair, if you try to use it from a couch it just won't work well. The biggest downside I see in mine is the clamp feels cheap but I haven't had problems with it yet. The pedals are also cheaply built and don't offer a lot of resistance like a real brake pedal does. Also note there is no clutch pedal! I also heard a lot of people say they quit working over time which caused me to get the 2 year replacement plan (it's only $15) but mine has worked perfect for about a month now. I'll update the review if something breaks.

Basically , I race my car in real life, so I compared what this steering wheel feels like in the game on my car to my real life car (mk3 toyota supra with 7m-gte if you want to check on it in forza 2). Anyway, the steering wheel rated poorly in comparison. The brake pedal is far to easy to push all the way to the floor and doesnt allow you to feel the point at which your wheels are going to lock up. Second thing is that the steering wheel trys to auto correct your car, if its spinning at all, it will automatically, in an attempt to force feedback, force your wheels to turn in the direction you are spinning indefinatly. This makes it very difficult to counter steer, because the wheel is already, in essence, counter steering. Also I noticed a "dead-zone" created by the combination of force feedback and lag, it would try to force feedback things that had already happened, causing my car to spin out because of late force feedback in the wrong direction (in the case of going through s curves), or jolt unexpectedly toward a wall after I had left a turn. Overall I compared the driving experience to when I borrowed a pickup truck from someone...even though I was driving a ferrari... I have not tried this wheel on other games but forza 2, since thats pretty much the only game I play, but I would sure recommend using just the controller.

I bought this racing wheel less than two months ago. Since then, I have used it a total of 25 - 30 times. In the beginning the wheel worked very well but over time it has become a nightmare to use. All of the sudden, the wheel has turn to the left (at 10 o'clock) and has set itself as its new center. Now, every time I try to use it, the wheel is completely off-center and behaves erratically in the middle of any racing game. I have called Microsoft and they require to turn the racing wheel in and then wait 4 to 6 weeks to get a "refurbished" unit back. For a $120 dollar expensive accessory you expect this wheel to have a high quality manufacturing standard. The worse part is that Microsoft knows about this on-going issue as most racing wheels have this problem. All racing games forums including the Forza and Project Gotham franchises are flooded with complaints. Some users don't even want to deal with Microsoft's customer service and buy the wheels time and time again. A quick search on Google will give you all the links. There is no calibration software to fix this problem either as it is a hardware sensor malfunction, and as stated by many users, "all MS racing wheels will become faulty at some point or another". I used to like the wheel a lot but it has become another expensive and useless product.

Here is what I liked: The new version seems well built. There was no 'play' in the steering. The pedals felt good. The FFB and vibrations felt decent. All the buttons worked. The wheel returned to center properly. In game setup was a breeze. Here is what I disliked: No sensitivity settings. Horrible lag. Pedal base lacked carpet grip system and moved around quite a bit. Short power cord. No calibration software. Overall, the wheel made Forza Motorsport 2 less enjoyable and nearly unplayable. The sensitivity on the wheel is so great that I had problems driving straight. I tried to make very small corrections but i spun out constantly. The lag was so bad that I was literaly turning right on the wheel but the car was still turning left. This was not due to lack of grip as I was testing the wheel and was going very slow in the game. It was also difficult for me to brake properly and stay on the track because the difference between too much brake and not enough brake was literally just a few centimeters of travel on the brake pedal. I had no such problems with my Logitech Momo Racing wheel and GTR2 on the PC. Forza 2 is a great game in my opinion and I will continue to play it with the standard controller. The lack of adjustibility of the wireless wheel has left me no choice but to return the wheel to best Buy.

I’ve had the xbox wheel for about a week now, it does take some getting used to at first, but after that it’s amazing. It’s not as great on games like Need for Speed, at least from what I’ve seen (its kind of sensitive). But I may just need to get used to it in those games, I’m a big fan of Need for Speed games, but I may just be so used to playing with a controller the switch may take longer to get used too. But for PGR 4 and Forza 2 there is nothing that compares, the feedback from the controller is sweet. It even works for games like Cars which my younger cousin loves. And I must admit the game is much better with a racing wheel. My only complaint (and the reason it wasn't 5-star) is the fact it needs to be plugged in and that it has a phone cord to attach the pedals. But I guess it would eat up batteries without that, but still it’s supposed to be “wireless”. All in all I’m glad I got it because I’ve always wanted one.

Just Bought it, usedfor about 2 hours straight. Works great so far. There is no pedal feel what so ever, which is no big deal. The force feed back works fantastic. Stability in straight line and through long corners is added as well. Makes holding a racing line a lot easier. Now as far as these people saying it sucks and they always spin out and lose, LEARN TO DRIVE!!!!! You cannot use this wheel and race like you do with a controller. You have to almost relearn how to play the game, it forces you to drive more likea real car. No more braking mid turn. Turn on stability at 1st, get used to the thing. Dont expect to able to hook it and tearup the road. For the money i paid for this, i am in no way dissapointed. 99.99 is inexpensive for a decent wheel. Look at Logitech $150+ all thwe way up to 299.99 for the G27. For the money you pay for those , you expect a lot more, and get it with the feedback on the pedals also and more steering degree.

I read these reviews before I purchased this product and decided to buy the optional protection since some of these reviews indicated a high probability of failure. I also believe that the $99 prices is too high. $69 would be more appropriate considering its limitations. Having said that, so far the unit has worked well. The force feedback is great and really adds to the experience. However, most racing games are understandably difficult to play as there is somewhat of a learning curve to using this wheel. The pros: Well laid out, xbox native hardware that appears to deliver a great, and realistic racing experience. The cons: Microsoft should have designed the unit to be truely wireless. If you desire foce feedback (once you've played with it, you won't want to play without it), you will need to have the AC power chord plugged into the wall. This makes its claim of being a "wireless" controller somwheat disengenuous. Having a chord to step over is a bit of a pain (maybe a larger batter compartment?)

Very accurate, best racing wheel for the 360

Reading the earlier reviews made me a bit angry, the wheel makes racing, especially Forza 2+3, a much more realistic experience. The accuracy of your steering inputs are much better than with your controller. I think the problem alot of people have is the wheel only has a 360 degree lock to lock rotation. In a real car there is usually double that. So your inputs have to be smaller to get the same response. It is easy to over steer, until you get used to it. It takes forza from a game with a controller, to an accurate simulation with the wheel. After running a lot of laps at Road America on the game I did a track day there, and was able to go out and run 8/10'ths on the first lap out. It is the best wheel out there that I have used, and has lasted me hundreds of hours of racing. I would recomend this wheel to anyone who is serious about racing games, and who plan on clamping it to a table to use it. It loses its accuracy sliding around on your lap.

Seems to be that this is a common problem with this wheel. Most time I read reviews that something is faulty but buy anyways because I figure it wont likely happen to me. That's why I bought this wheel. When it works, it's amazing! I mean you feel every bump in the road. One problem, last night mine just stopped working. The gas pedals don't work and the wheel doesnt work (however the buttons do for some reason). Wireless? The only thing wireless is the wheel to the Xbox. You have a pretty thick wire going from the wheel to the outlet, and then you have a wire going from the wheel to the pedals. I really enjoyed the wheel while it worked but dont know what to do now? Do I buy another and risk the same problem? I hate when products simply fail after I pay $100

This wheel has excellent force feedback, the paddles feel great, and the pedals feel nice too. I am planning on buying a new one to go with my new MW2 Xbox console. I got my old one for $150 before the price drop, so $100 is an excellent value. I loved this steering wheel. I had it up until my Xbox was stolen, at which point it ended up in my closet, had stuff thrown on it, and had it's paddles stripped off by the sheer weight of the stuff on top of it. As durable as it is, it couldn't survive my basement closet (nothing ever does). I would recommend this to anybody serious about racing. It is an excellent wheel that deserves a better overall user rating than it has at the time of this review.

Well i bought forza motorsport 3 and have been playing it for months with a normal controller, i decided to try and this wheel out and see what everyone was talking about. At first it takes some getting used too. But just the feel of having more input into a game is awesome. anyone can grab a standard controller and play, but it takes something more to use this. Overall i like it very much, braking and gas pedals are good, (wish it had a clutch pedal though) As some have said, yes it is extremely hard to go be as fast as when using a normal controller. Sometimes i have felt like taking it back cause it cuased more aggravation to use.

i tried the madcats wheel then this and this is by far better i love it im twice as fast with it in grid and forza 2 it has a realistic feel and is even a better feel with the gaming chair. i took out the plastic bearing and put in real metal ones so its even smoother. it works perfect like i thought it would will never race with out it again. i can play for hours on hard and smoke the AI cars. just wish it had a shifter and clutch like a real car not paddle shifting. is well worth the money and if you do buy this i would think about saving up another 110$ and buy a gaming chair to go with it it really complements the realisticness of the wheel.

If you enjoy racing games this will make it the ultimate home driving experience. Head and shoulders above the hand held controller if you are only considering the "fun" factor. If you find yourself competitive in online racing games such as Forza Motorsport 3 with a controller, you will find it difficult to maintain your online rating, making it difficult to complete your career without feeling like your are starting from scratch on your skill level. Despite this I do enjoy using the wheel and look forward to completing my career and then work on increasing my skill level on the wheel. Hope this helps

This is a great product if you are into racing games. It is well put together (nice solid feel). Totally different feel compared to your standard controller. Very precise, takes a little bit to get the feel for it, but after that it makes racing easy and fun. Some people don't like it, but that is because they do not understand that when you are driving at 100+ mph the car is not going to steer the same as to when you are driving your "real" car down the road at 40 mph. It is very real, only thing I need now is a couch that leans into the turns with me. Get two of them and they work great at partys.

I hate this product i cannot even drive with it i mostly play forza 2 on my xbox 360 so i wanted a wheel well that was a mistake i say. The auto correct jerks your hands and takes you out of control. The table stand fell apart the first day. When i only put batteries in it it disconnects. With the auto correct which you cant shut off on. it is impossible to control it was the worst purchase ive made at bestbuy. Also this thing is heavy like 5 to 10 pounds which makes things hard to use i think if there ment to be light and USEABLE.

from what Ive used its not realistic. I use the Logitech Driving Force Pro on my PS2 and that thing is OUTSTANDING!! The Logitech has very extreme force feedback(very hard feedback) and has a stick(and has paddle shifters) and has 900 degree turning, this 360 steering wheel has like a 1/4 of that. On the 360 wheel, the force feedback is way to easy! I get that this is the like only steering wheel for the XBOX 360 (Logitech doesnt make products for the XBOX 360), i understand that. but its not really worth your $100.

I wanted to buy this when I started getting into Forza 2. I played for Forza 2 for about one week with the controller then went to another game. After about 6 months I started playing again but with the Xbox 360 steering wheel. WOW! What a difference. After you get used to the steering wheel ( which may take some time ) it feels like you are really driving a race car. I am more into RPG and FPS games but after using the steering wheel I am going to be purchasing a lot more racing games. GREAT BUY!!

Wheel does not make Forza2, Forza3, or Grid any better. Pedals don't have the same pressure as any real car. The steering wheel set up just made Forza horrible; no wheel setting changes improved my performance; only the assists improved my performance. Car feels like it is not completely controllable both steering and accell/decell. Coming from a SCCA Solo2 member, take my advice and stick to the controller~ its not worth the headache.
