XBox 360 Kinect is the deal

The Kinect is a revolutionary piece of technology that I can't beliee we are using to play games with. Unlike the Wii or the new PS3 Motion, it uses and senses the whole body instead of a device. This has it's own caveats which I will get to later. But basically it translates well enough to play most games. Kinect Adventures is the game that's bundled and it gives a great example of what can be done. The Kinect sensor is placed at the base of the TV and you need plenty of room since you are using your body and position to control the avatar on the screen. 6 foot from the sensor is the minimum but 10 to 12 feet is ideal. You will also need same room to move left to right also. Go through the tutorial to calibrate and learn to use motion controlling. Then the fun starts. The Kinect, along with motion sensor is also a camera and a microphone so you can take pictures and also issue voice commands. On XBOX live you can even do video conferencing, which I have yet to try. The Kinect senses your torso, head, arms and legs well but not quite sensitive enough for fingers or rolling movements of the joints. It's excellent for Kinect Adventures which have several games the fits well with the Kinect such as an obstacle course, leak plugging, and dodgeball type games. I also got the Kinect sports and found games like bowling and ping pong it doesn't do so well with the pinpoint controls of rolling/twisting your wrists. But otherwise the control is very good. There is just a slight delay reaction so like most games you have to get use to the timing. Other issues, though minor, are that the sensor loses connection or gets confused when some other object moves in front of it, if we move too close or out of it's sensory zone. On other notes, I got the 4GB version as oppose to the 250 GB. I found out that I will not be able to play games that require space or add ons to games such as Halo and Age of Dragons. An expensive upgrade Hard disk is easy to install, though be careful of getting knock offs where you won't be able to use Xbox Live. The bundle also came with only one game controller. I highly getting the Kinect. There are titles coming that I would like to see using Kinect controlls but keep in mind it uses the whole body so, you can get physically tired after a few minutes of playing.

Produces a lot of heat but is otherwise fantastic

I bought this as a low-impact means to get some cardio exercising. Do keep the sensor 10' away. I live in an apartment, and for one person I've had no problems, but for 2-player simultaneous games, I'd have to rearrange the furniture in my apartment to eke out the extra space. Kinect Adventures is a nifty game that forces you to move. Unlike competitors with cute wireless controllers, you cannot cheat if you need to reach, duck, et cetera. Kinect Sports is another great game, for by and large the same reasons. You will work up a sweat and very easily, too. If you've kept a sedentary lifestyle, don't get gun-ho on games right away as you might injure yourself. It takes time to build up tolerance. And playing too much too soon wears out the "fun factor" far more quickly. If anything, this thing produces a lot of heat. Minimal effort was used for a cooling system, but I've gathered this newest version is better than the previous XBox 360 design in terms of heat dissipation. I did see a $25 add-on fan... if you keep your XBox 360 in tight quarters, get it. I will be. Oh, if you play lots of games, get the 250GB or 320GB hard drive as well - discs can be copied to it, which speeds up loading time and reduces wear on the disc drive (but the game disc still needs to be inserted for the game to launch, unfortunately.)

I got this because my 16 year old son swore he had to have it or he'd be the laughing stock of the city. "Everyone has an X-Box dad!" and silly me for thinking he had to have one... but hey, nothing wrong with being the awesome dad... right? So look, the system is great, very nice/clean graphics etc, very smooth. The Xbox is easy to use... the thing that gets me is that to use some of the features you have to pay Microsoft MORE money. Example: To use Netflix you'll have to have Microsoft Gold account or some sort of X-Box live account that you will have to pay for on top of paying for this item. You don't have to do that with the PS3 apparently (my son never told me). We really like the product. The Kinct is awesome! My son was able to talk with his buddy over it while playing Halo. So the features are outstanding and hours of endless not to mention mindless entertainment for all is possible for sure. After paying for my gold memberships I'm able to watch my Netflix without a hitch along with lots of other features. We like it and you won't be disappointed with yours.

The Kinect is a very interesting concept, that with more developement, will come along. The graphics are not always the best as you often find yourself more as a shadow on the screen (a faded figure) when picking games and courses on the Kinect Adventures. Due to this and whatever other factors on the side of the Kinect my 5 year old child weighing 47 lbs., standing 41 inches (3' 5") has difficulty getting the game started. Once the game is started for him, he can control everthing as long as it is not on the bottom of the screen. He raised his hand to see it appear on the screen, but as he pulls it down to the selection button his hand disappear before he gets their. It is as if he is to short or not thick enough for the sensor to continue to recognize him. Being a family of five we have size, shape, height, weight, we got it all covered and the youngest is the only one to have problems with it. The device is an excellent form of entertainment for most anything that we do. As a Minister and Youth Minister we have used this device in several situations and it ihas been a hit every time!

Have owned our 4GB XBox and Kinnect for over a month now and continue to be amazed at what it can do with little set up effort on our part. Kinnect games are easy to get into and fun to play all the while getting some aerobic exercise while outside, cold winter winds blow. Connected with provided cables for nice looking graphics but have upgraded to HDMI cable and graphics are excellent. Still playing with game DVD that came with the Kinnect. The included games are not hard to play but can challenge and make for good casual gaming. Have added another controller and a few 'normal' games picked for cheap at GameS*** but after spending some time with a game controller has me thinking my serious gaming is still going to take place on the PC. Wireless connection to our router was quick and painless and updates to XBox and games was quick Overall, we are pleased with the XBOX/ Kinnect combo and plan to add aditional Kinnect games. It is easy to set up, easy to use and the included games are fun. This coming from first time game console owners.

    Substitute for Gym

I bought an Xbox with Kinect strictly for fitness, not for typical sededentary gaming. The Adventures game that comes with this package is fun, and does work up a slight sweat. However, for a better workout I also got the Your Shape Fitness 2012 game. The Kinect sensor can sometimes be finicky. For instance, when playing the Your Shape game, it does not detect my hand when it is waist high on the left side. It also requires quite a bit of cleared area in the room, even more than the literature states. For instance, the literature suggests standing 6 feet back for one player, but when the Kinect turns on, it tells you to stand back even further - more like 8-10 feet. Overall though, the price of the unit plus a couple of fitness games is definitely less expensive than a gym membership. Plus, I can use it to play to DVDs to watch while on my treadmill, so it saves me from buying a DVD player. I do not subscribe to any of the fee-based Xbox Live features.

Santa brought this to our house this year and everyone loves it! My youngest is 3 and he can play games despite his height. The voice commands are a cool novelty and really get useful in Kinect Sports Season Two. My one complaint is that we're not hardcore gamers and the xBox Live membership is an added expense I had not considered. All I want to use the WiFi for is to stream Netflix. The added cost of xBox live makes Netflix streaming go from $8 to $13. Not a huge number, but I'm supplying the internet too. Other than that, it's a great product as long as your living room is big enough. The lag others mention is almost unnoticeable if you calibrate properly. I would also get a hard drive larger than 4GB if I had the chance to do it again. Even for casual gamers, over half of the hard drive is consumed by program files. All that's left for saves is 1.4 gigs.

    Good product, small disk space

I bought this model because I was told, by the Best Buy employee who helped me, that I could use a 1 TB external hard drive with this product. That was simply wrong. I wound up having to return the drive that I bought with this and bought a 250GB Xbox hard drive instead, which works great. Now it all works fine, and since I got a gift card with this one, I still came out okay in terms of price, but it was a frustrating experience. I still think that this is a good deal and a good buy if you want a 360, but definitely either go straight for the 250GB unit, or buy the bigger hard drive at the same time. 4GB isn't even enough to install the data from a single game, but I guess if you don't care about that and don't ever want to buy a game online as a download, then maybe it's fine.

Was a great gift for my wife...

My wife loves games, is competitve, and exercising is something she does religiously. She dislikes technology that isn't designed well. The games that came prepackaged with the X Box 360 were entertaining for her as well as guests and family members who tried it out at a Christmas celebration. The Kinect works pretty well. My only complaint would be a bit of a lag factor between the camera sensor and the games. I got a 16 GB USB drive, but later decided the internal hard drive will be necessary for a certain game so I bought a 250 GB XBox hard drive on eBay, and much more cheaply than at any retail store. Wasn't sure that my wife would want/need a harddrive. Researched the benefits. But she wants to play some old school X Box (pre 360) arcade style games which I later found require the drive to download conversion software.

    Great upgrade

I've actually gone through two of the original Xbox consoles. The first console was an original release Xenon chipset console. I had the red ring of death after about a year. Fortunately, I had a BB service contract and was able to replace it. The second console had the Falcon chipset and lasted about two years. It failed just recently and it happened after the BB warranty expired. I probably wouldn't have upgraded except that the second console had died. The new S console has everything the original probably should have had: HDMI, digital optical out, more USB ports, etc. It runs much quieter and is a bit smaller and subsequently a better fit in the entertainment center. It's nice not having to listen to a console that sounds like a jet taking off. Overall, I'm happy that I upgraded. However, as I said before I wouldn't necessarily have upgraded if I hadn't had the previous console failures.

Good but there are some limitations

    Posted
    Kitek

Kinect has limitations in terms of the amount of light that can be in the room, the color of the clothes you are wearing when you play (didn't see my legs when I was wearing black pants), and I have heard of (but not confirmed) that even the color of your skin, and also what I do confirm, how tall you are. I am a tall person and Kinect can barely see my whole body. If I move forward a little bit, it cannot see my feet. If I raise my hands - it cannot see them. Regarding XBOX, I expected being able to use it for Netflix and I cannot. In order to be able to do that, I would need to be paying an additional monthly fee to XBOX (in addition to what I pay to Netflix). So that's a big deal for me, because when they were saying "Netflix is available on XBOX" they didn't mention the additional monthly fee.

    Get the larger hard drive

Our best buy was out of the kinect bars except when bundled with the new x-box. Not wanting to wait, we decided to upgrade to the new system. It works great, but there isn't enough memory to play complex games like Halo Reach. We ended up having to go back and purchase the separate 250 GB hard drive to plug into it. If you're going back and forth between the 4 and 250, save yourself some time and get the larger hard drive. As for the kinect, it's a lot of fun. Very easy to set up, but it needs A LOT of light to track movements correctly. We have no overhead lighting and only 1 lamp in our living room so it was problematic at first. A second lamp, closer to the sensor seemed to fix it and we haven't had any issues since.

    Best game system yet!

The Kinect sensor worked much better than I had expected based on the reviews that I read before purchasing. It might be a little slow to pick up your motions but only if you are moving wildly, not following the instructions for that game or are out of the range of the sensor. When you follow the instructions for the game and stay in the proper area, the sensor works great! Much better and more advanced than the Wii although I am not an avid gamer. So much fun for parties and rainy day gatherings! Kinect sports, adventures, and carnival games are my favorite but I love that I can just pick up a controller and play a regular video game by myself if I wish. The Netflix streamings and being able to chat and play with other friends via the internet are also great options.

    Freezing issues but Kinect #1

    Posted

I returned the first Xbox Kinect system that was purchased due to overheating and freezing issues. It's great fun but we would play for a couple of hours and the games would just lock up. Thank goodness for the warranty we purchased through Best Buy. After we confirmed that the problem was actually the system we returned it to Best Buy and got a replacement...no hassle! So now on system #2 and we absolutely love the Kinect. I have friends and family come over and play & fall in love with it as well. It is a rule in my house that if video games will be played that play will include active games (thus, Kinect games ONLY). If you want a fun way to stay active then you should definitely get the Kinect system.

Love it, fun, fun, fun.. originally bought for Christmas, but couldn't wait! Glad I didn't wait, too--cuz shortly after hooking it up, I found that they went the cheap route and included only the ANALOG Connection cord with the deal! Digital game, you would think the Digital cord would be standard.. Oh well, another $30 and a trip to the store to get the right cord. Warning: If you have a digital t.v. (doesn't everyone?), you will need to do the same thing.

My family had a great time with the game it came with. But went through the game quickly. We wish each family/guest can have their own avatar like the Wii but can't. OR it is not easy to figure it out. We quickly found out that other games are expensive. And to be online, there was additional cost for the membership (which we didnt do). For many of the games you can only have two people play at a time. In Sports, my daughter found a "party mode" where you can have four players, but we haven't played that yet. Overall, it is a fun family thing to do, especially on a rainy day.

i purchased the 4gb xbox 360 with kinnect early in 2011, and i absolutely love it. kinnect is fun, and was phenomenal for the Superbowl party. great graphics and the options for music and video are amazing. i was however disappointed with only 3gb of usable memory, even after deleting the useless games pre-installed on the drive. ended up breaking down and buying a separate 250gb hard drive, which this console has a small, practically invisible compartment for, unlike previous models :). overall, great console, but i would suggest the 250gb console for only $100 more.

The Kinect has a few problems. But overall it's fun and entertaining, the kids love it. The first problem it has is it requires you to stand 6 feet away from where you place the camera. Even mounted on the wall, with furnature that's hard to come by. The second problem is that the camera requires light and doesn't do good with back light. The third problem is it's slow reaction time. You move your arm and then watch the game move its arm a half second after you. So you have to time your moves a little earlier than you would expect. Other than that, it's fun.

The xbox 360 has great graphics and my son likes the xbox live. The Kinect, however, is a waste of money. I have tried to play and it is difficult to find where the camera is. My 2 younger children, 8 & 6, are get frustrated with it because more times than not, the camera cannot find them and it takes too long for them to be able to be recognized. Then they just get frustrated and don't want to play anymore. We have had it since Christmas and have played less than 1 hour of Kinect. I wish that part of the package could be returned.

I got this so I could actually do something aerobic that I liked. It works fantastic for that - I have used the Dance Central game and also the Fighters Uncaged and they worked great! My only beef would be that on the website when I ordered for pick up said it came with a sports game and I ended up with the Adventures game which I won't use. When I mentioned it to the sales person when I picked it up she said that is the only one they had. All in all i would do it all again.
