My membership lets me gamechat with friends even overseas and play online multiplayer, a key factor in games like Star Wars: Battlefront and Dark Souls III. The discounts are excellent, and the shop always has specials. And, of course, the free games! I've received a number of games that I would have purchased anyways (Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishment), been introduced to games like Styx: Master of Shadows and Zheros, which I never would have otherwise found, although I love them, and games like Lords of the Fallen and Borderlands (360) that I play and enjoy but never would've purchased.

If your planning to play online with friends or other players around the world you need this also it's much cheaper buying the year instead of paying monthly

I love Xbox and even if it's 50 bucks a year it's still ok considering they always have discounts on games and sometimes there is good free games online.

I always buy a prepaid Xbox Live gold card every year. When my Xbox live Gold account was about to expire I got a reminder on my Xbox and offered me a renewal for either $7.99 a month or $8.99 a month (I can't remember) I do remember that it came to round about $100.00 for the year. Yes, $100.00 My girlfriend (on my same Xbox) got a reminder for $5.99 a month (still not a deal.) She told me to wait and check Best Buy and a week later I bought 2 for $39.99 each (cheaper than what they offered me for 1) So I am glad I waited as this was most definitely the best deal.

One of the ways that Microsoft irritates both its customers and its potential customers is by charging a fee to use Xbox Live Gold. While it is frustrating--especially for those of us who are dipping into our income more than we should for something as unnecessary as video games--I do feel that Xbox Live is a terrific service. I would like to believe that the sales of Xbox Live memberships help to make sure that Xbox Live continues to live up to its high standards. While Microsoft is sure to snag lots of money from its customers by selling Xbox Live memberships through the Xbox Live Marketplace (and, subsequently, automatically renewing them when gamers don't necessarily intend to do so), it really pays for Xbox owners to check with major retailers for discounted Xbox Live membership cards. My vote is currently for buying these from Best Buy. Not only can you get the membership for a good deal less than you would pay through the Xbox Live Marketplace, but you can also get rewards points and free shipping to your home. The only downside is that, at the present time, it seems that the brick-and-mortar stores are no longer carrying these memberships for store pick-up. If you are without an Xbox Live Gold membership and you want to get a great bargain, you'll have to wait a week or so while the card ships to you from the warehouse.

Xbox live is the best online gaming service out. With deep content and the ability to share a membership amongst a household. Worth every penny.

I bought this when I got my X-Box One since it was half off when you buy the console...A deal! As soon as you are a gold member you get free games, you get game discounts. I was skeptical paying for a service like this since I came from the PC realm of Steam and only paying when you had to. But the content that you get by being a Gold member will definitely pay for itself in no time. And if you are buying a console...Yeah pick up the 12 or 24 month! I'll see you guys on-line!

Gold has improved. Competing with PSN's PS+, Microsoft understood they would need to have rewards for their Gold Live customers. And they are beginning to make some headway. Now, like PS+, Gold members will receive great discounts on select games every month, as well as a free game on whatever Xbox you happen to own. If you own both, you can claim both! Highly recommended, even for those not into MP. The free games more than make up what little you have to spend now!

The world of multiplayer gaming is exciting and new and terrifying but it's also some of the most fun I've ever had in my twenty-some-odd years of gaming. Jumping online to team up with random people in a CoD matchup or Portal 2 co-op or anything in between is an extremely rewarding and satisfying aspect of having a modern system. I couldn't imagine not having online access to play and the Xbox Live Gold subscription is a must.
