Great Game with new game mechanics

I pre-ordered this game when it first came out based on early previews and was not disappointed. The new Nemesis system is great, you get to manipulate your enemies and shape what is happening in the game world [to a certain extent]. Combat is reminiscent of the Arkham games, just with swords, daggers, and bows instead of the Dark Knight's usual gadgets. This game is on the periphery of the Middle Earth world and it works great this way, just touching on events and characters enables this to weave it's own story in that universe. Highly recommend.

I found this game to be completely satisfying. There are plenty of challenges but it's not ridiculously challenging. For the hardcore, it may be too easy, but for me, it was just right. It's not overdone with the story at all. I played this for hours with no frustation. It's just fun. If you've played Assassin's Creed, the game mechanics here will be just about the same. Running around killing Uruks and/or dominating them was probably the best part for me. I am a fan of the LOTR universe and I enjoy (onscreen) killing things, so there is that.

    A Game Changer

Probably one of the most underrated games, Shadow of Mordor lets you play as a ranger fighting for revenge -- a quest that puts you directly against Sauron's forces. The combat system is great, and if you like Assassin's Creed and the Batman Arkham series, you'll love this game. One of the game's highlights is the way you'll use your powers and command to instill fear in the Uruk horde. You can threaten generals, find weaknesses, plot takeovers and use fear to your advantage. Would highly recommend this for gameplay and story.

    Fun Game

Let me start by saying this is a solid, fun game. If you are considering it, you probably won't be disappointed. But while everyone and their grandmother seems to love the game, I think the game shines more like aluminum than silver. PROS * Combat is fun * Not too long or short * Good balance between stealth, combat and ranged fighting * Planning your kills according to the enemies' weaknesses * Plans going awry when some other captain/war-chief (or 3) interrupts you current battle, requiring you to stay on your toes CONS * Nemesis system is forgettable * Too easy * Finding artifacts is also too easy * Most captains/war-chiefs can easily be killed with stealth, or with the special ability that allows unlimited combat finishers * Sometimes I was defeated by the controls * After finding dead bodies, uruks will stop hunting you in about a minute Ok, the nemesis system. Some people love that you keep fighting the same uruks over and over, but I don't get why. I didn't even notice I was fighting the same ones because they are all mostly interchangeable. I only cared about the weaknesses of my targets. Is the little bit of changed dialog really that cool? Between stealth kills, the ability that allows unlimited combat finishers, and the ability to leap over your foes, combat was not much of a challenge. I died several times in the beginning, then almost never after these abilities were unlocked. Oh, and a bit of a spoiler here, after you get the brand ability... fuggetaboutit! Nothing can stand in your way. This was all very cool and made me feel powerful, but I still like a challenge. Oh, and a couple of times I had some control issues, but I guess that is what comes with the ability to fluently hop onto and climb walls. Anyway, like I said I had lots of fun playing the game, I just hope the game offers more of a challenge next time around.

I love this game. I purchased this on ps4 when it was on a sale a month a two ago and decided to purchase it on the Xbox one at an awesome price with the gamer club unlocked. The game has awesome graphics, great story line, and fluid controls. However, sometimes the combat gets repetitive. I still decided to give it five stars!

I got this game not really knowing what I was going to get myself into. Honestly my expectation was kind of low, but I had a few friends who said it was fun, so I decided to try it out. I had so much fun. Yes at some points it may have gotten a little frustrating, and there are some parts I would like to change or add, but that comes with all games. Overall I had so much fun playing and finishing this game. I had about 37 hours into it when I finished, and that included only a few of the side missions, but mostly just consisted of main objectives and the progression to get to those main objectives.

While not as steeped in lore for serious fans as I would like, the gameplay is terrific. I never thought that I could spend so many hours slaughtering the armies of Sauron! The combat system is fluid, and the world is stunningly rendered.

Shadows of Mordor - Xbox One Review

Shadows of Mordor for the Xbox One far surpasses it's last generation version with graphics but game play is relatively the same. This game has a large open world dynamic, allowing the player to travel to pretty much anywhere (within reason). This game has over 20 hours of game play has DLC able to be purchased from the Xbox Store. Personally, I think it's worth the money. There is a game of the year edition will ultimately save you a few bucks if you are definitely going to buy ALL of the DLC. If you just want a good game to play through, this standard version will suffice.

Shadow of Modor's gameplay takes inspiration from both the Assassins Creed and the Arkham Asylum series. The game is an open world setting where stealth seems to be stressed more often than going in "guns" blazing. Combat is largely of system of attacking and countering a la timed button presses mixed with equipment use. The other hook of the game is the nemesis system where enemies you lose to in combat move up in rank in the Orc army and become stronger. As far as the story goes it is entertaining enough and there are some cameos by well known characters in the universe. I am not completely steeped in the lore so I can't tell you if it fits within the cannon well.

Normally I dont buy video games based on books or movies, but I gave this one a shot. Graphics are amazing but game play is too repetitive. Kill this captain, watch another take his place. Help this stupid orc become a boss and rise through the ranks to get no where. Watch Gollum run through acting like his stupid self as always....still looking for the precious.... Pros: Graphics, gameplay mechanics... Cons: Repeated quests, mobs get way to difficult when attempting to take out bosses, some almost impossible to defeat.

    New Adventure in Middle Earth

Middle Earth:SOM is an excellent game for anyone who values adventure. If you are a fan of J.R.R. Tolkien's universe this game casts you as a ranger fighting against the forces of evil in a story that keeps close to the Lord of the Rings cannon but transpires at a different time most will probably not be familiar with. It is an excellent take on the story and contains all new exciting content and a huge world to explore. This is definitely a must play adventure.

I was hesitant to buy this game when it was marked down to $20. Usually the only games that drop in price like that are awful! But after reading some reviews & asking some friends if it would be worth it, I bought it. And it is hands down THE most fun game I've played in a very, VERY long time! It has an incredible story line, beautiful landscape, controls that are easy to maneuver, and what seems like an endless number of missions. I HIGHLY recommend this game!!

I'm only about five hours into the game - so keep that in mind. Overall, the gameplay is fantastic. The Nemesis System in the game makes it a more unique adventure/action experience. It's essentially Rocksteady's Batman games blended with some Assassin's Creed, set in Tolkien's universe. The only drawback so far is the environments. There isn't much variety. The environments are murky with a lot of brown and gray hues. There may be a break from this, as I'm only partially through the game, and it's a minor criticism. Overall, worth a purchase if you're into the action/adventure genre.

    Great Game Set In Middle-Earth

This game basically takes the stealth and fighting from Assassin's Creed and Batman, but improves on both. Assassin's Creed makes you run around spending more time gathering collectibles than fighting in combat. The recent Batman games have a great combat system built around counters and special moves. Shadow of Mordor focuses on the combat and Nemesis system (Orc Captains and Warchiefs) instead of making you track down 100s of collectibles (boring). I have killed many Orc leaders in my 25 hour game time and not one looked the same nor had the same name. Every captain and warchief feels unique, and I think that is awesome. The story line of the game is interesting, and if you do all side quests and battle it out with the orcs, then this game can easily take you 30+ hours. The graphics look pretty good, especially the close up shots of the orcs. I am very pleased with my purchase and highly recommend this game, especially if you like the lore of Middle-Earth..

As I said this game is definitely a mix of Arkham Origins and Assasin Creed merged beautifully into one open world adventure. The game looks gorgeous and the controls make the fighting work so smoothly. The story is great though I'm not caught up on all my LOTR lore but you don't have to be. Bottom line if you like either of the aforementioned games i would definitely recommend picking this up.

I'm a fan of the Lord of the Rings books and movies and this game does it great justice. The gameplay mechanics are very similar to Batman Arkham Asylum, which was an awesome game, and the story follows much of the background stories between the main story line. The game is easy to pick up and put down without needing a lot of reminders of how to play or way you were at when you last quit. That being said there is not much too the game, the story is just mildly intriguing and the gameplay is really repetitive.

It is the "Game Of The Year" for a reason. People who have played AC & Batman may find the stealth / combat system familiar but that is all there is. The game is its own and has excellent combat. The story is interesting too though not canon with LOTR. The nemesis system is really unique and gives a new edge to the game. If you like RPG-like games or hack-slash games, this is a must have.

I started playing this game and I habce to say, I haven't putnit down. It has an amazing story, the characters are brilliantly written and the story keeps you coming back for more. The side missions that you can participate it are different enough that you don't get bored of them easily. The big, open world is fun to explore and conquer. This is definitely a must play game for everyone.
