Posted .Thank you for the review! We are sorry to hear that the range of these radios isn't want you expected. Range is greatly dependent on terrain. The 36 mile rating is for mountain top to mountain top range with no obstructions.

They work best in areas with no obstructions like buildings/trees/hills with a clear line of sight between both radios. 3 miles is more likely when there are too many solid objects in between radios. Posted .There are many factors that go into the range. Line of site, hills, interference from power lines other radio bands etc. If you have any issues Midland support is available at 816-241-8500 M-F 8am-4:30pm CT.
So so product range is not 38 miles

Posted .Hello, these radios have an "up to 38 mile range" which can be achieved over open water or mountain top to mountain top. Any obstructions will decrease the range of the radios.

Ended up having to buy Motorola 2 way radios. Do not spend you money if you are going to uses these 5 days a week. they don't hold a charge after 2 weeks

Posted .Although these radios are used by 1000's of businesses across the United States they are consumer radios. That being said if you are charging the batteries correctly they should die within 2 weeks by any means. Additionally, your radios do come with a 3 year warranty and we can replace your batteries. Please call Midland Customer Service at 816-241-8500 M-F 8am-4:30pm CST and a customer service representative will he happy to send you new rechargeable batteries.

The "up to" range is under optimal conditions over open water, desert, or mountain top to mountain top. Any obstructions between you and who you are communicating with will greatly decrease your range. This is true no matter which brand of radio you purchase.

Posted .We are sorry to see you rate the T71 series radio so low. In order to get best range radio users should be in open rural areas without obstructions, or on flat areas where you can see the other radio user. When you add in dense terrain, being inside buildings or vehicles, etc you will see decreased range. Since these radios are UHF they do require line-of-sight for best range. Additionally, make sure that you are on channels 1-7 or 15 - 22 to get high power on your radio. If you are transmitting on channels 8-14 you will be limited to .5W of transmitting power per the FCC.

Best range will be experienced over open water, mountain top to mountain top or open desert.

Been using for 2 years now and we couldn't be happier. 5 star highly recommend.

I don't know why they say they have a range of up to 30+miles because I think you would have to be in a desert to make that work. Anyway, I purchased these to be able to communicate with my son while he's riding the dirt-bike trails and I'm at camp. No cell service otherwise. We're still figuring these out but they did work while my son was on certain parts of the trail. I'm still glad I purchased them and will continue to learn more about how they work.
