Posted .We're sorry to hear your experience was less than 5-stars. Best range will be achieved in open areas without obstructions, or on flat areas. The "up to" range is under optimal conditions (ex: over open water, desert, or mountain top to mountain top). As with all two way radios, any obstructions between radios will reduce the range.

Even tried being 3 stories up on an outdoor balcony and the other radio in the backyard. Balcony would have line of sight to the other radio except for maybe two buildings and trees. We were on Channel 1 using high power and CTCSS. I wasn't expecting to be able to communicate from 38 miles away or whatever the advertised distance was but a mile seemed reasonable.

The radios were rated good by others reviews too. The radios only worked good in direct line of sight communication. If there were any trees or hills in the path of correspondence - the radio reception would become uncomprehendable. While correspondence with other radios would be clear.

Posted .Hello, you actually described UHF radios perfectly. These are "line of sight" radios. Any obstruction between you and the person you are communicating with will greatly decrease your range. This is true no matter what brand of walkie talkie you go with. If you are looking for extended range we would recommend the MicroMobile radios which offer much more power.
