I would like to have had more of Luc Besson's flavor out of this one, but a decent watch.

There are a number of good actors and actresses in this film which would cause the viewer to expect a rewarding experience. This is a science fiction, quasi horror, film which is based on one of the oldest themes in literature. That is the theme of the creation of artificial life by man. In ancient times this was expressed in the legend of the Golem, an assassin made of clay by a Rabbi who then destroys the enemies of the community. In the 1930s this was seen in the film "Frankenstein" where a scientist creates an artificial man from parts of the bodies of other men.
Both of these films adhere to religious principles. By the 1950s this went something like "There are some things man is not meant to know." Man must not challenge the domain of God (the creation of life) or he will suffer a dire fate. This was particularly found in the final scene of the horror classic Curse of the Demon when the scientist has now become a true believer, but still doesn't want to be convinced of this new belief. It is also found in the legend of Prometheus whose crime was giving man knowledge and was punished for eternity as a result.
More recently there is also an emphasis on man's behavior when confronted by beauty as he sees it. Men in particular, tend to equate virtue with that which is beauteous, often to their misfortune. After the success of excellent quality special effects the effects themselves began to be a massive detraction from entertainment in general. A film that propelled the Frankenstein genre farther and faster due to it's excellent effects was "Blade Runner" about android slaves and assassins where the major emphasis on the film was on whether an artificial life form could have real emotions.
So in Morgan we have a human created android designed to look like a woman, which is only five years old, and is greatly beloved by the team of geneticists who created the creature. To cut to the chase, and to spoil the film for you, the experiment, as expected goes disastrously wrong.
There is no hero in this film. There is however a merciful end to the experiment when the amoral (as expected) artificial creature is finally killed. The character who closes down the project is played by Kate Mara. Her presence on screen is far more appealing than publicity stills convey (to me at any rate). It is her presence that makes this film worth watching.
This is the center of attention for me. Like many men, I am attracted to beauty and that is amply found in Kate Mara (and that's why I pay to see stupid films). The rest of the film follows a familiar well worn formula and is somewhat entertaining once you get past the illogic and stupidity of the basic scenario (a common fiction problem). The film, like many today, relies on glossy special effects to amuse the viewer. The industry benefits now, as always due to the fact that a film is a way to get a date to go with you for a few hours away from home. A great deal of film attendance is due to the impetus of dating, not of the virtue of the film being viewed.
Since all the scientists in this film make the same obvious blatant mistakes as are found in so many films of this type, the writing is a disappointment to me. So that makes it an average film. For any of those who worship the idea that artificial life has merit I point them to the episode of The Outer Limits, particularly the end sequence of "Demon with a Glass Hand" which remains the definitive human appreciation of this topic.
