First off, I have played/owned nearly every MK game in the franchise. This is the absolute pinnacle of perfection for Ed Boon and NeatherRealm Studios. I want to notate I am biased towards MK since it was such a big part of video games and nostalgia for me. I was around 14 when the first MK came out for home consoles, and I had been playing it in the arcades prior. Fatalities have been a way of life since I was in my teens. Graphics - 10/10 - Rendering Xray and Fatalities at 60FPS? YES PLEASE! The PS4 version is so much more tight than the Xbox One version which suffers from dropped lower graphic output (I own both consoles) - the difference should sway dual console owners to PS4 - IF - they have both current gen consoles. This does not take much away from XB1, however the PS4 is the king of fight in this section. Audio - 10/10 - While it might be repetitive (compared to other MK games) you know what your getting here. FIGHT! FINISH HIM! echoes loudly through my 7.2 surround sound, The music tracks are great, and fit the game perfectly. The only other fighting game I would say that tops the music - would be Killer Instinct (seasons 1 & 2) for XB1. (Those hard guitar riffs, and how the big combos start making their own sound effects are CRAZY good!). That does not diminish the darkness of MK though. Replay Value - 9/10 - Why didn't this score perfect? Because even though we will be getting more DLC fighters, and the lineup is huge! - It always seems like I want "just one more character". This is not a fault of the game per se - but a testament to how great it really is. Online and 2 player - 10/10 - You already know what your getting here. Load times are quick for net matches, and even quicker for 2 people playing against each other at home. The matchmaking can seem overwhelming when you first step in the arena, but the more you hone your skills of eviscerating your opponent, the more rewarding it is for you. Note: MK players are not usually casual gamers - so you WILL have a legit fight to the death on your hands. Lastly - DLC characters 10/10 with a slight disappointment that these guys are not built in for free. DLC seems to be a money grab with most games, and while I feel MK is no different - they have (in the MK9 - and now MK10) brought me some of my most wanted characters EVER. MK9 offered Freddy Krueger, Skarlet, Kenshi, and Rain - MKX steps it up to a whole level completely from the announcement(s). MKX will offer Jason Vorhees, Predator, Tremor, and Tanya! Jason is already available and is fantastic. He fits right into the MK world. With the Predator being next, it is a cinema dream of mine to have him in the game, and to even fight Jason "Machette Murderer" Voorhees? EPIC! - One note - I hope they move Freddy from MK9, over to the MK X roster. Who doesn't want to fight Jason vs Freddy? I would also like to see a Xenomorph (from Alien, Aliens, Alien 3 etc.) in the game, I think he would fit well. So do yourself a favor, and buy the season pass - you will regret it if you don't! Fatalities - 11/10 (Yes you read that right!) These fatalities are every bit as gruesome and epic as you think they are going to be. I NEVER tire from watching the extra 20 seconds at the end of the fight, and it amazes me each time. Some are better than others, sure - but your favorite fighter is sure to reward you will some disgusting fatalities. Lastly - this game does not come up short in any section. It is amazing from start to finish. The story mode is the best yet, and provides so much background, and inclusion of older characters (to help sell the story of the new ones) that it is worth playing through more than once. If you are a fighting game fan, or this is your first fighting game - you can't go wrong. This is simply the best MK to date, and the roster is amazing. They really did a great fan service on this game - and I expect the DLC to only enhance as time goes on. Hopefully they will also have another DLC pack with more characters (than the 4 offered), but thats just me being greedy. Sorry for the long review, but I had to convey how amazing this game really is.

More Great Mortal Kombat (But Not Best)

About four years ago Mortal Kombat 9 was released and it introduced an awesome story mode which allowed you to play a few fights with most of the characters, they included a tower with 200 mini objectives to hone and perfect skills, and the core concept of a tight fighter online or local we'd come to love all built in. Now we have Mortal Kombat X and it gave every indication of taking the awesome previous game and improving on it. Sadly that's not fully the case although the ground work of story mode, challenge towers (sort of), and core fighting are all here. The story mode was my favorite and it's here and fine but very short and kind of boring. The challenge tower from before and now we have "Living Towers" which aren't active yet so I can't speak to that. New to this entry is Faction Wars where you select one of five groups and that becomes your clan allowing special finishing Fatalities. You earn points to rank up and on occasion battles between clans or invasions from other characters. This stuff works both online or offline and offers special daily, weekly, and even hourly challenges such as win a fight without special moves, take damage when jumping, fight on the ceiling, etc. The series is moving away from the roster of fighters we've known for years and introduces a new generation of good and bad guys plus brings along the cream of the fan favorite crop (Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Raiden, etc.). Also back are Brutality finishers although they're more like fatalities and will require certain feats to be achieved during the fight (such as doing a 13 hit combo as well as landing the last punch with an uppercut or something along those lines). So far no Friendships or Babalities although that could come along later. Also there's some unrest on forums because extra characters again cost $5.00, you can now buy "easy fatality" coins which allow you to do a disgusting finishing move with only two buttons (they are so much more gory and gross now then ever before both in a good way and a bad way), and of course costume packs for a few bucks if cosmetic looks of the fighters matters to you. It's a step down from the last game which really shined as the best since MK2 but it's far and away better than most of the latter games of the PS2 era.

I remember the days when I had to go to the arcade to fight against opponents on games like Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter. Now, even if no friends are at the house, I can go online and fight against other people around the world. I love it! I also love the fact that I don't have to buy another PS4 membership to play at home with a friend. It's nice to have a 2 player game where no extra costs are involved. Story modes are cool, but I could see where improvements could be made. The fights are intense and challenging. Beware, there are some really skilled fighters out there that will destroy you with flawless victories. Spend some time practicing before going into ranked online matches. Character selection is plentiful and can be expended through unlocks or purchases. Communication between players in matches is pretty cool and helpful when you find some nice opponents. It doesn't have the same charm as going to the arcade and making your opponent feed another quarter into the machine after tearing his heart out. But, those old school days aren't coming back. Overall, I think it's a great game, I would recommend it to anyone, and I would buy it again. But, I would give it a rating of 4.5 if possible. There are improvements that could really make this an epic game.

If you are a fan of fast paced frame perfect fighting games with signature over the top special moves, absolutely brutal combos and insanely gory finishers, run to your local Best Buy and scoop this title up immediately! I don't know how NetherRealms Studios did it, but they found a way to build upon the already deep mechanics of the games fighting system in order to please all die hard MK fans, but make it so easy to pick up and play even a newcomer to the franchise will be pulling off impressive counters and juggles by the end of their first day of gameplay. By incorporating the new interactive level mechanics system (first seen in Injustice: Gods Among Us) the combat becomes even more interesting and intense while you are constantly finding ways to keep your opponents guessing with well placed throwable objects from the background or structures that can be used for more evasive maneuvers. This is a great installment to the series and a huge leap forward in the storyline of the MK universe. An impressive roster of fighters old and new (with four more on the way if you own the Kombat Pass), complex yet easily palatable gameplay and a whole new batch of shock inducing Fatalities make this a guaranteed must-have title for your Sony or Microsoft console of choice. NetherRealm Studios has done it once again!

Mortal Kombat X is the 10th entry in the iconic fighting game series. The game features 24 new fighters at launch, with 8 being totally new fighters. That's pretty big considering the game series is renowned for its characters. Weirdly enough, the game actually omits Liu Kang, who was the series hero for 8 of the 10 games. The combat is pretty brutal, and the fatalities prove this game has worked hard to earn its M-rating. The issue with the game is product management. For reasons I won't understand, the game shipped incomplete. I had to download a 2GB patch when I got it, and that was to unlock Story and Online mode. That's ridiculous. Then, another patch came a few days later at 3GB. There are also a bunch of stuff yet to be released like Invasion mode, which is just odd to me that the game would be called done without those. Netherrealm has also done some shady stuff with DLC, allowing you to pay $5 for 30 "easy fatality" tokens, which are expendable. It's not necessary, but that's the point. Why even try to monetize something so trivial. Character DLC isn't cheap, at $30 for extra fighters, but it is the norm. I'd suggest waiting until the "Komplete Mortal Kombat X" comes out in a year or so. They always do, and they are always a better value.

This game has great gameplay. If flows more organically than Mortal Kombat IX. The storymode is the best of the series, however, I was very disappointed with the length of the game overall. There's twelve chapters that roughly stretch across a span of six hours or so. The storymode's length is the one of only two draw backs. The quality of the campaign is amazing. It's highly narrative and cinematic, and, again, it's the best in the series. The added use of quick time events was a smart move, as they really draw you in during those action sequences. If you were looking for a game that has great graphical prowess, however, this is not it. While the upgrade from last gen is apparent, it isn't as noticeable as I would have hoped. I would have expected it to look better, especially considering what some developers call pull out of these new systems. But I assure you, because of the polish overall, you'll hardly notice. In conclusion, this is a must for Mortal Kombat fans, and fans of the fighting genre of gaming. With better storytelling and mechanics, you'll enjoy it a great deal. Just don't expect its graphics to knock you off your feet.

I buy fighting games, finish them and return them before the week. This one I will keep for awhile. I haven't explore all there is to the game but I am doing the story and its REALLY good so far. Like in previous versions there is a story arc and every chapter you get to go through different characters. It is well done I must say. Also I duel with my son all the time and even though he is a pro at it, I been able to pick the combos pretty fast and kick his behind a few times. Of course, he is 16 and he had way more time than me to learn all the combos. The graphics? Yeah, pretty sweet specially with a big screen. You cant be playing this in less than 40" screens it would be a crime! The background just like INJUSTICE are interactive. The fatalities and brutalities and anything that goes into slow motion are badass. The level of detail and gore the designers put into this is just over-the-top and hilarious! I can just see them thinking about what horrible deaths we can design for fatalities, LOL! I am keeping this game, you should get it too. It is MORTAL KOMBAT! So you know its mindless destruction for hours!

Mortal Kombat X takes what was good about MK9 and expands upon it. While I typically never cared about the "Story" mode in fighting games, this is probably the best story mode in any fighting game and I highly suggest you play it through. The gameplay is extremely fluid and the different fighting styles/special move sets available for each character really create a lot of diversity in the way you can use each character. Depending on how you prefer to fight, different styles will suit different players needs. The roster is also very large and the new characters are some of the best MK has added in a while. If i had a few complaints it would be that there is no Cyrax and there is not as many stages as I would like, but those do not detract from the overall greatness of the game. Also, the "Easy Fatalities" should never have been included. I personally have never and will never do an easy fatality because it takes away from the essence of performing the fatality. Despite the minor complaints I highly recommend this game for any MK fan.

Love this game, its the only game I've been playing since it came out. I finally found a replacement for Injustice. There's so many good things I want to say about it. The game-play is based on the Unreal engine, which has its pros and cons but for the most part I think they did a great job with this game. The combos are a little tricky to master but with a little practice I guess it becomes easy. Though the game is missing a few of my favorite characters (Shang-Tsung, Kabal, Nightwolf) you get plenty of characters to choose from. I think they got the perfect mix of new characters along with the usual fan-favorites. The graphics are top-notch and the interactive objects and X-ray special moves are a nice touch. Though this game is identical to Injustice in many respects I think that it adds its own MK touch to it. Its fun enough to beat several times and its great for playing with friends at home or online. I'm still debating whether to get the Kombat pack or not, not sure if I want to pay another $30 for 4 new characters.

Most people will play this for the blood and corny-ness of the game, so the fighting game mechanics is not that important. But like any other Nether Realm games game comes out and the balance is always being updated because they don't really know how to make fighting games. The game also wants you to buy DLC characters and there are already many that are in game but you can not play, because they probably plan on wanted to sell it to you for season two DLCs. The online is horrible with lag as usual other NR games compared to other fighting games. That said, I still give it a 4 star because I think most people who will buy this game won't care if it's a solid fighting game. And as a brainless button mashing fun and paper rock scissors game play at best, it's still good entertainment. I personally wouldn't have bought the game if Jason and Predator wasn't coming out as DLC characters, but if you are reading this review then you probably already like MK, then I think as a MK game or Nether Realms game it gets 4 stars.

Great First Entry For Current Gen

Don't expect anything wildly new from this generation's entry into the series - MK9 did such a great job of reinvigorating the series that this time around seems like more of the same. This, however, is not a bad thing at all. The graphics are great, the story (while a bit obtuse) is entertaining, and the mechanics are still super reliable. This game adds three fighting styles to each character to spice things up a bit. Each style has a couple of combos/specials that are unique to that style, giving a lot more to master for each character. Some of the series mainstays are gone (Kabal, Shao Kahn, Shang Tsung) but some brand new characters replace them to soften the blow. They range from really cool to barely noticeable, but none are offensively bad. If you liked the last game, you'll love this one. If you hated the last game, you'll hate this one even more. Overall it's a lot of fun and has plenty of content to cover the $60 asking price and make up for some of the DLC practices employed by WB. 8/10

I've always been a huge fan of mortal kombat and this game does the franchise justice. My favorite mortal kombat game has always been mortal kombat deception, and even after playing this it still is, however this game is definitely a close second. The story mode consists of just plot and fights and random quick time events sprinkled throughout. It's very similar to injustice as far as story goes. Overall there is a lot of content packed into this game that will keep you entertained for a very long time. It's unfair to compare this game to deception because although they are the same franchise, it is still a very different game. If you like fighting games and enjoy lots of violence and gore then you'll love this game. If fighting games aren't really your thing or you don't like a lot of violence then this isn't the game for you. P.S. I love what they did with the krypt in this game, it's like an old school adventure game and I've spent so much time playing in it.

This game looks fantastic and is tons of fun to play. Incredible technological accomplishment and the fighting system has been refined substantially from the previous edition. However - online is a little janky. I Experience lots of lag despite a very strong signal. Further, and most disappointingly, the single player offerings are lacking. The previous iteration had a fun challenge tower with hundreds of unique, one-off challenges ("you can't move! Fend off 10 enemies with only punching"). This version has replaced that with multiple towers that rotate troughout the day and week. This is cool in theory but it feels like there's no progression. Further, the challenges aren't as fun and seem to be done on a per-tower basis. This results in 5 or 10 straight fights with the same rules. It feels automated and random as opposed to thought out and creative. Had I realized this going in I may have put my money elsewhere, despite the game's overall quality.

First of all, if you're a MK fan then getting this was a no-brainer, but if you're a fighting game fan then this will please you as well. First off graphically, this is the best looking fighting game on PS4 so far, with extraordinary character models and beautiful level design. The fatalities are all wonderfully gruesome and the level of detail is amazing! Technically this is a top-rate fighter with eight new MK characters (included) and all of the fighters have three distinct fighting styles that DRASTICALLY change the fighting mechanics, this system is way deeper than a "stance" change and effectively broadens the roster as no two styles of the same character play alike. Whew! All this and I haven't even covered the additional content, from online play, to tower mode, to the krypt and all the unlockables. This is truly an immense fighter and currently the best on PS4 if you like MK or fighting games in general this is a MUST BUY!

I want to start by saying this addition to the Mortal Kombat franchise is hands down amazing...period. It is obvious a lot of time, thought, and preparation went into the making of this game. From the graphics to the gut wrenching fatalities this game has it all. I would like to say I was very impressed with the story mode as well. Took me about three days of solid playing to get through it and it held my interest well. Only complaint I have about the game is how some of the veteran characters of mortal kombat have been removed I suppose to make way for the newcomers. For instance, in the game as of right now; Baraka, Rain, Smoke, and Noob Saibot are not playable characters as they were in the previous Mortal Kombat on PS3/XBox 360. Still a great game with loads of other characters to play as though. They game sort of has a Injustice: God's among us crosses with MK blend feel to it. Overall I give it 10/10. Great game

Solid gameplay, over the top violence, with a fun campaign that acts as a great intro to each character with a good story. Highly replayable, tower modes significantly extend experience. Why not 5 stars? I am not thrilled with the trend of microtransactions, having to pay to unlock what's already on the disc you paid for is just a ridiculous trend that needs to stop. This games got quite a bit of it. Although none of it is necessary to play/ enjoy the game, all content should be included/accessible when you pay for the game. You'll be asked to pay full price at point of sale, so shouldn't you have a full game? Rant aside, this is a polished, challenging, and enjoyable MATURE game

Do you like: Old Mortal Kombat Violent games (comical amounts of gore) Old horror movies? If yes to any or all three, go ahead and buy this. Now, I'm a fighting game competitor and enthusiast and the flow of the gameplay isn't my cup of tea, but if you're just a casual fan of hitting buttons against friends or already like Mortal Kombat, you'll probably like this game a lot. It's not especially difficult and pretty simple to get into. The story is pretty entertaining. Here are the downsides, which are quite similar to the actual draws I already mentioned: It's still Mortal Kombat It's ridiculously violent and gory Guest characters not particularly interesting unless you're a cult horror movie fan All in all, it's a very solid game. For me, though, a better fighting game experience would be found in something made overseas, such as Guitly Gear Xrd or one of Capcom's offerings.

I've been playing Mortal Kombat games since the first one. I remember how shocked people were to see a video game so violent. It was great! In a fun way of course. At the time, no one thought MK was gonna last because of all of the protest against violent video games. Well here we are 25yrs after many sequels, 2 movies, a tv show and a web series. Mortal Kombat is back in 2015 stronger than ever. Amazing graphics, smooth gameplay, long term replayability, and so much gore at 60fps in 1080p. If you're a Mortal Kombat fan, you'll be pleased with this installment. The story is a bit shorter than the previous MK, but you'll get to see a lot of other familiar characters that are not yet playable. The ability to join a faction also adds a nice touch to MK that will inspire many more events and other fun challenges later down the road.

The mechanics are flawless and each character has unique interactions with each of the other characters. Their move sets are very different from each other.. and even the look of each character is very different from the others. (unlike the olden days when Katana and Mileena simply different colors - even the male ninjas all look different). So basically the variation in characters is a PLUS. There are enough different modes to keep you busy.. towers, online, and a story mode amongst others. I only gave it 4 (instead of 5 stars) because I don't agree with the trend games have of adding content for extra money in the future. I ESPECIALLY have a problem with fighting games locking characters for money. As consumers we should fight against such greedy injustices. Other than that, this is a pretty good game. Don't play it around young children though. It gets pretty gruesome at times.

This game will not help you relive your Mortal combat 2 days on Sega, but it will provide some fun and some beautiful graphics. The story mode is a bit difficult to play not because you switch characters so much but because it can be difficult adjusting to new environments and playing against new enemies. Additionally the story mode is set so when fighting the final boss you can't choose from a group of characters that would give different endings. Having the platform of forcing you to join a league as soon as the game starts is interesting. I find that I want to change my league when I see the stats, but you live with your first choice. Every victory or trophy gives your league more points on the nation wide servers. It's kind of like an MMO fighting game with team affiliations that really doesn't affect game play much at all.
