I got the Motorola B12 to replace an older SurfBoard that just wasn’t giving me the speed I was expecting after upgrading my internet package. Moving from a 16x4 DOCSIS 3.0 unit to the 32x8 DOCSIS 3.1 made a massive difference. I was a little concerned when I opened the box because the B12 is actually fairly lightweight and compact, but after running it for a couple of weeks I have realized it is a much bigger powerhouse than its lack of heft would imply. Setup was straightforward by just following the few steps on the quick start guide (which is the only documentation in the box) which is nothing more than hooking up the coax cable, plugging in an ethernet cable to my wireless router, and plugging in the power cord. Once the indicator light stopped flashing after a few minutes, I went through the Xfinity app to register the new modem and deregister my old one and that whole process took less than five minutes. I did have to restart my router once the modem came online to get everything up and running, but that wasn’t a big deal at all. I opted not to download the Motorola app because I didn’t really see much value in it, but I might do that later if there becomes a need for troubleshooting or whatnot. Since getting the B12 going I have had zero lags, no downtime, and buffering-free video streaming, even under heavy loads within the house (think 4-5 HD streams at the same time along with the demands of dozens of smart devices and multiple kids surfing or scrolling social media) and during peak hours. So far, this modem has been rock solid, and I have no complaints whatsoever. It’s a modem that just works and does what it’s supposed to. If you have an older modem and are looking to upgrade, or if you’re leasing one from your provider and want to save on those monthly fees, the B12 is definitely a good one to consider.

Using your own modem gives you more control over your home network and allows you to avoid any potential fees from your ISP. This is only a modem, and will not provide wifi, so if you have something from your ISP, they usually are a modem and wifi combined, where this one is not. So if you are replacing ISP provided equipment, you will need to buy your own wifi router. That is a good thing though, because you can get better wifi with your own equipment, and also, again, save money from the ISP charging you for wifi. As far as this modem, setup is pretty easy. You will need the CM MAC, which is helpfully printed on both the box and back of the modem. All you have to do is connect it, then call your ISP and tell them you are replacing your modem with your own, and provide them with the MAC. Give them a few minutes, reboot your modem, and you should be good to go. This modem only has a single status light. On one hand makes for a simple streamlined, modern look, on the other hand, it's not clear what the modem status really is. The light also only has two colors... teal, and white, which are very similar. Any degree of blue color blindness, and you'll never know what color it really is. But, I guess, the most important it know is solid white means its on, connected, and working. You can get an app for your phone, or access the modem directly in your web browser to check status too, but for some reason my current router is blocking requests to it, so I wasn't able to test that. I am on a 400mbps internet plan on Spectrum, but with this modem I regularly get closer to 500mbps when testing on speedtest.net, which is fantastic. And, I know I'm future-proofed if I upgrade my plan.

Motorola B12 High Speed Modem This is one of the most compact modems I have seen and owned. It is oval shaped and wrapped in a speaker like fabric. It also is very light but does feel solid. It only has 1 lan port which is a big negative for me. I like to have at least 2 due to the number of devices requiring a lan wired connection. The modem is rated 2.5GBPS speed, Docsis 3.1 Set up was easy and quick, not counting the time for Comcast/ Xfinity to recognize and add the modem. At 1st they said it was an invalid MAC address, but after some prompting, that was rectified. I have super fast internet speeds, and had previously had issues with lagging and slow connection. This seems to have been rectified with this modem. Connection was fast and almost no lag in connecting or loading. The modem did not get very hot, nor did it seem to have any negative issues as far as the physical unit. All in all, I am impressed with this modem, its size and build, not to mention its operation. Just wish it had more lan ports !

I have had Comcast Internet for a long long time. I have also owned my own modem most of that time. Over the last 20 years, it has saved me a lot of money. I also work from home several days a week, so a reliable internet connection is critical for me. I bought my current modem more than a decade ago, and it still works fine, but over the years, my speeds have been slowly increased by Comcast despite not requesting that they be increased. While my current modem can still handle these speeds, it is really at the high end of what it is capable of. The world has kind of passed it by. It also doesn't have as many channels available, making it more suscptible to network congestion than this modem. I got my current modem, when my previous modem started struggling with changes in the network, and it felt like I could be reaching that point again soon. Upon receiving this modem, I installed the Comcast app on my Android phone. I disconnected my old modem from Comcast replaced it with this one, and plugged it in. I used the app to scan the QR code on the bottom of the new modem. The app told me to wait a few minutes while everything was set up. I did it during my lunch break. After a few minutes, it was finished, everything was working, and that was that. I tested the bandwidth on my system, and I was getting speeds slightly in excess of my current plan. Lunch break ended and I just continued working. Never had to call or speak to anyone from Comcast to set it up. The other internet users in my home are oblivious to the fact anything has even changed, which is how it should be, and it has been a couple of weeks now, and there have been no issues. The modem will more than pay for itself by not having to pay an equipment rental in about a year. After that, it will save you money every month. Another thing about this modem, is it actually is aesthetically more pleasing than a typical modem, as it is fabric covered, and actually almost looks more like a speaker than a modem. So, reasonably priced, easy to install, Will pay for itself in a short period of time, works well, looks good. I don’t see any reason not to get one if you need one. I would highly recommend it for anyone, especially if you are currently paying for a monthly equipment rental from your cable internet provider.

Are you trying to decide if it's time to stop paying for a modem through your internet provider? It's definitely time! I made the switch several years ago so I decided it was time for an upgrade and the Motorola B12 was the perfect choice. Since it's certified for Comcast, Xfinity, Cox, and Spectrum (I am with Spectrum) I knew it should work. It claims to seamlessly connect with any Wifi router and it really did. I simply called Spectrum, gave them the ID number on the bottom of the B12, plugged it in, connected the cable from the wall, and within minutes I was up and running. I had delayed this procedure for a few days in fear that it would be difficult or wouldn't work - I was wrong and it was so easy. The ethernet port can supply up to 2.5 gbps (depending on your provider) to power the fastest routers and computers. The DOCSIS 3.1supports speeds 10x faster and more efficiently. It's also backwards compatible with DOCSIS 3.0 and with 2.5 gbps download speeds and 765 mbps upload speeds you should be prepped for the future. There are a few limitations but none that affected me. These are typical with a "modem-only" set up - you need a separate router and the B12 doesn't offer a telephone port. It's also not compatible with fiber optic, DSL, or satellite services. It comes with a 2-year warranty and free tech support. You can even live-chat with Motorola experts through the Motosync app (the app is not required to use the modem). If you're looking to eliminate the monthly modem charge, or upgrade what you have, the Motorola B12 couldn't be better or easier. With the Motorola B12 you get all of these exceptional features built into a stylish device that looks like a portable speaker! No more ugly modem - this one looks great.

    Owning v. Renting

Owning your own modem and router versus renting is always going to be better. Even if you don't know what to do with the equipment. From cost saving, even if it's pennies on a dollar or so small, you don't see it to improve performance. Having the latest and greatest equipment greater control. If you are a network I.T. major like myself and a long-term investment. Even at Penny's on the dollar, you're still saving something. That by itself is enough of a reason to always own your own equipment. Now the following part goes out to my IT and computer majors, especially those specializing in networking. With our skill set we can hide our networks. We can go in and open and close ports. Minimizing risk of hackers, Trojan horses and things like that. Even to those not really computer savvy, you can always hire someone to do this kind of thing for you. But the bottom line is owning your own equipment is always going to be better. Take nothing away from renting because the onus is always on those who rented it to you and they have some obligation and responsibility. But just like as a child past a certain age, we don't need a babysitter. The world is shifting and smarter than it ever has been. We feature a lot of people that are very capable of owning, operating and getting the very best out of their modem and router, whether it be for their whole or small business. This modem is the beginning of that dream. Just get a router that matches your lifestyle and your speed and you're off to the races. Highly recommend this product.

    End the "rental fee"

It was the perfect time to upgrade my modem. The old one was a DOCSIS 3.0 Modem but it didn't have any issues supplying the 100Mbps service we have. Spectrum's told me they won't activate any more 3.0 modems so I grabbed the Motorola B12 to take over the task. For a measly 100Mbps connection the modem is overkill, but with the modern specs and the inclusion of 2.5Gbps ethernet port, it allows for growth as upgrades become available. Just because you don't have the highest tier connection it's still worthy to get a modem that can handle more for "just in case." Activation was easy, unlike my previous attempt to upgrade modems. I downloaded the Spectrum app, followed the instructions, and was back up in no time. Ran a few speed tests and was still getting the full speed. So much easier than having to call, wait, and wait, like I had to on the last upgrade. The price of the newer tech means you'll have to run it 4x longer than the older 3.0 modems to make your money back from rental fees. Where it used to pay for itself in 6 months, now it's gonna take a little over two years. As long as it lasts it'll be worth it.

Great new product!. I have Comcast internet and purchased this item because it was the upgraded model to my Motorola MB8611. So far very happy with the performance. Easy to install and it stays connected. No dropping. Hitting true 1 gigabit speed. Excellent performance on both the download and upload. High quality chips make this a durable unit. I’ve used a modem router and noticed that over the last couple of years, my internet connection has gotten more laggy, especially when there are guests using the internet. I did not want to start paying monthly fees again, so when I got a chance to try this Motorola B12 Cable Modem, I was excited because it’s compatible with Xfninty Internet. I quickly learned that this is not a modem router, so I did have to purchase a compatible router on the side. No big deal if it was going to give me the performance I was looking for. I am happy to share that yes, I have faster speeds all over my small townhome and the set up was easy. Took about 15 minutes, but I did have to get Xfinity to resend the signal to the modem. All in all, I am very happy that I can continue to avoid the monthly fees and see faster speeds. It also sounds like I am at least future proof for at least 5 years (I am hoping more!). Never really owned a Motorola device since their old flip phones, but I am impressed with this simple and yet powerful modem.

So my current modem is my own Motorola that I've replaced with this Motorola B12. I haven't rented a cable modem from my ISP (Xfinity / Comcast) in years. So right off the bat I would consider that the best thing about this modem - you own it and you're not paying even more money to your ISP for their equipment. I have a 1G connection through my ISP and usually get close to that (and sometimes even over that) with my previous modem on a wired connection. Wireless is of course slower, but that has nothing to do with the modem. So hooking this up is straightforward - coax to the modem and ethernet from the modem to my router. Activating your own equipment with your ISP has gotten much easier than it used to be, so that wasn't an issue either. Once I was up and running, I ran some speed tests at different times of the day over several days. Although my results were good, they really were no different than the Motorola I had been using. Granted, if I ever get a faster connection through my ISP, the B12 should be able to take advantage of it whereas my current Motorola would not be able to. So, I guess I have that to look forward to. In summary, the best thing about this modem is that you own it and it will eventually pay for itself over several monthly payments to your ISP, depending on the amount your ISP charges for the equipment rental.

The Motorola B12 3.1 Cable modem looks great and set up is super simple. All instructions are included in the box it really became almost as simple as plug and play, except i did have to contact my internet provider in order for them to activate the router service. Other than that, it is highly recommended and can handle super-fast speeds with no issues. You are able to download the Moto Sync app that allows you to monitor the network. One downfall this modem does have but they do make it clear on the box is that you do need a separate router if you would like WIFI. Oh, and wall mount capability would be nice also. Obviously these two items are nt deal breaker in any way because the modem does what it was meant to do. We built and built like a tank. It looks like a speaker, but it is not. I do wish it had more connection ports in the back in case you want to hard wire more items directly to the modem. Overall, this is a very nice looking and well performing cable modem that will be here for a while until technology changes again.
