Customers are saying

Customers appreciate the Moto G Plus (5th Gen) for its affordability, especially during the holiday season. They are also impressed with the camera quality and the excellent battery life. The phone's storage capacity and unlocked status are also well-received. However, some customers have expressed concerns about the lack of NFC, which limits the use of Android Pay, and the speaker volume, which they find inadequate.

An OK phone for its price

Bought this phone on Black Friday discount. Overall it's OK for the $229 cheap price. Software: Biggest drawback: slow software support and update. It's still running Android 7.0, and last week (early December) the security standards only got updated to --- August !! In the first week of December the security standard was January. Other than that, Motorola's very basic Android OS is good, no bloatware, makes the phone run faster and frees more storage space. But this also means it lacks some necessary utility apps -- such as text editor, calendar, and resource monitor -- need to download 3rd party ones. Not being able to customize program icons on screen is quite bad. "Setting" is confusing to use for new users. "Notification bar" on the top can be tricky to drag down, often I need to try multiple times. Notification for all newly installed programs are set to "ON" as default, but I wish the default could be "Silent", so I don't need to silence them manually. And when USB connected to computer, the option to enable "transfer files" isn't explicitly displayed in notification, but I must touch the charging battery icon to bring it up -- inconvenient. Also if you use prepaid service like I do -- it doesn't display the remaining minutes anywhere. Although your carrier may provide their own app for such things. Phone: The phone software sucks. If during a phone call I open some other apps, can't bring the back the number pad dial -- it will just disappear!! Had to quit some 800 customer service calls several times because of this! Speaker/sound: Sometimes sound is unclear. Plugging in headphone doesn't help much. Some ppl say the mic noise cancellation is bad, though I can't verify it. Camera: The big bump of camera lens seems fragile, and camera glass easily gets dirty. Fortunately I also bought a rubber phone case for protection, this isn't a big problem for me. But the case makes it bulky. "Twist to turn on camera" is a great feature, can skip the unlocking to instantly use camera. Main camera is OK, but the front selfie camera's field of view seems awkward, my face image seems slightly distorted on the photo. Button: The fingerprint scanner's swipe function isn't as convenient as advertised. I still haven't got used to it after 2-3 weeks. Also it won't work if you wear gloves---something quite bad in the cold winter outdoor. I would prefer 3 separate hard buttons (home, back and forward) instead. Volume buttons are too close to power button. Sensor: No NFC reader is a big drawback. Also I wish it could have a temperature sensor... Screen: The large screen is good for reading, and I like the "wider" aspect ratio (unlike some other phones with height:width = 2:1). Resolution is more than enough for a crystal clear display. But the touch often won't work if wearing gloves (even very thin gloves), again quite inconvenient in cold winter outdoor, especially when picking up a call... Network: wifi occasionally gets mysterious disconnections, though most of the time works OK. Battery: Battery life seems good (maybe because I haven't installed many apps). I'm able to get 4 days without recharging, if not used frequently. But, because of the cheap price, it definitely worth it. A very good deal. If you see it on discount, buy it!

    Good Smartphone

Been using the G5 for the past few weeks. Solid battery and fair screen. Getting used to the OS after using fruit phone for five years is a nice challenge. So far I like how it merges fields and allows for more choices, like color, screen layout, and gestures. Really hated fruit phone need to turn on phone and then turn on the flashlight. Haptic touch response is nice. The video playback is good. Camera not wonderful just fair. Focus seems to be an issue. Flash seems slow from click to pic. Don't and won't pay for these mega overpriced smartphones. All seemed flawed. This is just fine and I can buy one each year and ignore the morons looking for the top phone now that goes on sale in 6 months. Speaker is fair and headset clarity is okay. Cases are few and hard to find in stores. Feel & finish are fair. Like the headphone jack. Improves audio. Good poor man's smartphone.

    Lacks good audio

If you take in to account how cheap this phone is then the audio issues are acceptable but just barely. The audio is weak, the volume is low. It only works well with headphones and then it still a bit light not much power. The screen resolution is pretty good I watch movies on it when traveling. The battery life is not the best if your a heavy phone user. For 229.99 64Gb it's good at 299.00 not so much. It says water resistant and Gorilla glass V3. It's nice and thin verry light weight. Keep a charger handy for mid day.

This phone is fast but as I have used it now for a week I find peopleI talk to say that I sound muffled. The volume on the phone is just barley enough. The Verizon store times seems to sound garbled. I use a Plantronics ear piece most of the time and it works well. This phone will probley be returned by me. It is a quick internet phone screen is perfect. The flaws tend to make it a deal breaker. The positive is u can use it on any carrier.

I had read great reviews of the Moto G 5 Plus and had fantastic results with the previous model so was excited to get this phone. Unfortunately, after two days the phone overheated and never worked again. Best Buy fully replaced the handset and my experience with the replacement has met all expectations.

    Moto G5+

The Moto G5+ is a definite upgrade over the G4+. It's more powerful, faster and has a better camera. The fingerprint scanner works better also. I like to play Fishdom and I couldn't do that on the G4+. The G5+ handles it just fine. Also the call sound quality is better. The OS upgrade to Android 8.1 removed glitches it developed with locking the phone, both using the PIN number and the fingerprint reader. Using any lock would freeze the phone. I got a replacement through my Best Buy Protection Plan and the second phone did the same thing, until the system upgrade solved the problem. As it is aging, it's getting more glitches. Sometimes it hesitates when I first start typing and it's getting harder to type accurately. It's slowing down and now I can't access my inner storage. For a few hours, I couldn't get to my apps through settings either. Also, on the phone screen through which you make calls, my favorites keep disappearing. I frequently restart it or shut it off and now I'm cleaning up the cache files to see if that will help. I'm also uploading all my files to the cloud and considering a hard reset. Of course, the battery is wearing out as well. For some people, $400.00 is cheap for a phone. For me it is a good chunk of cash and I want this device to last longer than two years. I also wish we could get to the battery so we could replace it. I really liked this phone. But it's giving me a lot of headaches now. For that I'm removing 2 stars.

The reviews I read for this phone were true to form, however for me, the speaker was a deal breaker. It was by far the worst in my many cell phone history. That said, the Moto G series seems like good phones if you are on a budget.

Phone is good but for someone new to smartphones it's not easy to understand all functions even after downloading the manual. With the instructions it still takes many attempts to get the function right. It's almost impossible to download your music library even with the manual, My Expert, and talking to staff at Best Buy. I think there must be an assumption that the buyer is an experienced smartphone user. Google Play is not well structured for manipulating your Library even after you find a way to download it. I find myself spending way too much time figuring the phone out. I probably should have gone with an Apple so I could go sit down in one of their classes after purchase and with one of their staff. Best Buy should consider something similar.

Good phone for the money. Don't expect this to operate like a flagship phone from the big brands, but this is a good phone to connect to the Sprint $25 or free for 1 year plan.
