Customers are saying

Customers regard the Mountable Solar Kit for Ring Video Doorbell 3 and Video Doorbell 3 Plus favorably for its ability to extend battery life and its ease of installation. However, some users experienced issues with the charging functionality, particularly in areas without direct sunlight, and reported compatibility problems with certain Ring doorbell models. The product's effectiveness appears to be highly dependent on sufficient sunlight exposure. Improvements in charging reliability and compatibility would enhance customer satisfaction.

      Hello SarahSimon,

Thank you for taking a moment to leave your review of the Ring Solar Panel. We know how important it is to have peace of mind when it comes to your home security, and having an unresponsive device can be concerning. Please know that we are here to assist and are confident that we can find you a resolution in a timely manner.

After reading your review, it seems that your Ring Solar Panel is not fully charging your Ring Video Doorbell 3. Ring recommends at least three to four hours of direct sunlight, depending on your usage. Make sure there are no obstructions that could cast a shadow on your solar power device, such as an extended roof, tree branches, or bushes. If your installation area is frequently very cloudy or gets a lot of rain or snow, this could limit the amount of sunlight that your solar power device receives.

The solar panel requires direct sunlight. Filtered/indirect sunlight through the clouds will not provide a charge to your doorbell/camera. Here is a helpful article that explains this in more detail: https://support.ring.com/hc/en-us/articles/360061517732-Solar-Charger-and-Solar-Panel-for-Ring-Doorbells-troubleshooting.

      Hi Erik.

Thank you for sharing your feedback with us.

The solar charger was most certainly intended to extend the battery life on your Ring Video Doorbell 3, so you can rely on your security device for longer periods of time without recharging the battery pack. We are eager to work with you today to provide you with some solutions for your battery life concern.

It sounds like the Ring Solar Charger for the Ring Video Doorbell 3 and 3 Plus is not keeping the battery of your device charged. The Ring Solar Charger for the Ring Video Doorbell 3 or 3 Plus is a small device that can be mounted behind your Ring Video Doorbell 3 or 3 Plus. The Ring Solar Charger is a convenient power source to help charge and extend the battery life of your Ring Video Doorbell 3 or 3 Plus. It requires several hours of direct sunlight every day to recharge your device. The ability to recharge varies based on device settings, motion notifications, and sun exposure in the area of placement—it is not ideal for porches.

If yours receives several hours of direct sunlight, it is possible the motion settings may need to be adjusted to prevent your battery from draining quickly. The first setting we can look at is motion frequency. Motion Frequency allows you to fine-tune your motion detection protocols to strike a balance between consistent alerts and battery life preservation.Ring's Smart Alert algorithm is an internal program that runs inside your Ring device. It analyzes the traffic patterns of the detected motions, looking for repetitive patterns. When it detects such a pattern, it essentially "sleeps" your device for a certain period of time, cutting down the number of motion alerts you'll get from the same set of stimuli. The longer a repetitive pattern of motion continues, the longer the time between motion alerts is issued. There are three settings to choose from:

Frequently: Your Ring device will capture all events. This option has the shortest battery life.

Regularly: Captures and notifies you about motions less often. This option has standard battery life. We recommend starting here if you are unsure of which option to choose.

Periodically: Captures and notifies you about motion even less often. This option has the maximum battery life.

Slows down the battery consumption, but you will still to charge the batteries. I'd only recommend this if you're looking to lengthen the time between charges, not completely do away with charging all together. Overall, it is useful & does charge the batteries but not the extent I was anticipating or hoping for.

I bought this solar charger with the expectation that I wouldn’t have to replace my ring battery anymore. After a few weeks using it I can tell you that it will extend the battery life and the frequency of changing it out but it’s not a set and forget deal. Mine is mounted on an outside wall with no obstructions so no excuses , and I live in Florida! It will maintain the battery for a longer period of time but every so often battery still dies and you will have to charge it indoors or replace it with a spare like I do.

      Hi MacBreeze.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We understand the importance of having a solid charge on your Ring doorbell so that you are able to have a longer time between charge cycles. Having a solid connection ensures you do not miss any activity around your home. We are here to provide you with some information to resolve the issue you mentioned in your review.

It sounds like you are experiencing issues with the device in regards to battery life. There are some troubleshooting steps that you can take to ensure that you have your device set up for optimal performance.

While batteries in Ring devices can go months between recharges with normal use, this is dependent on a number of factors in your home's environment, such as the local weather and the number of activities captured. The more events captured by your Ring doorbell, the more your battery is used to power the live HD video stream to your device. Even if you do not answer the call, video is still sent from your Ring product to the Ring servers. In addition, the battery is also drained each time you use the live view to look or speak through your camera.

The device's battery level may vary based on the amount of direct sunlight the solar panel receives. It is important to ensure that your Ring Solar Charger is installed correctly and that it is receiving enough direct sunlight to operate as intended. For best performance, Ring recommends at least two to three hours of direct sunlight for the Ring Solar Charger.

There are some troubleshooting steps that you can take to ensure that you have your device set up for optimal battery-life performance. The more events captured by your Ring devices, the more your battery is used. Using "Live View" can also drain your battery faster. If your device is capturing an excessive number of events each day, you may need to recharge your battery sooner.

To prevent excessive activity, under "Motion Settings" for your device in the Ring app, you can:

Adjust your "Motion Sensitivity" slider to a lower sensitivity.
      Redraw your "Customizable Motion Zones."
Change "Motion Frequency" to regularly or periodically.
You could also adjust the direction of your Ring device so it doesn't detect as much motion.

You can go to "Power Settings" in the Ring app to see what features may be draining your battery.

To access "Power Settings," open the Ring app:

Tap the menu (≡) on the top left of the dashboard.
      Tap "Devices."
Tap the individual device (video doorbell or security camera) you want to check.
Tap "Power Settings" to check your "Battery Level" percentage and "Feature Power Usage."
Tap a feature to adjust "Snapshot Capture," "Motion Frequency," and "Video Recording Length.".

If any additional information is needed regarding your Ring Solar Charger, please reach out to our community. Ring Community is our first peer-to-peer community forum, giving our customers the ability to help one another and share their feedback and experiences directly with Ring.

I gave it a neutral Review because I have a GEN two ring camera and this works for a GEN three. I already have the solar charger for another ring doorbell in an open location and it keeps it at 100% all the time. I had another brand solar charger which was of inferior quality and would never charge the unit properly so stick with the ring brand.

I love the convience of the solar kit for the Ring doorbell. It wasn't hard to charge the battery, except the screw you had to remove was so small, I was afraid I would lose it, and it was hard for me to get started back in. With the solar charger, I don't have to worry about it. I already recommended it to a friend, that has already bought it!

I love this. I was kind of tired of replacing the battery in few months, and sometimes even not realizing that it needed to be replaced. But now I have a better solution. It's like I don't worry or have to track my ring doorbell and if it ran out of battery! Nor be concerned when I am out of town for a while.

Again, no wiring no energy use. As long as you got sun, this is money. goes a couple of days maybe a week if you have no sun you can still manually charge it. If needed so winter maybe need to charge. I have sun, so I have not charged thing at all.

      Hi Tacos.

Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

We understand the importance of having a solid charge on your Ring Video Doorbell 3 and 3 Plus. The Ring Mountable Solar Kit for Ring Video Doorbell 3 and 3 Plus was certainly intended to extend the battery life on your device, so you can rely on your security device for longer periods of time without recharging the battery. Rest assured, we are here today to provide you with some information in order to ensure you get the most out of your solar charger.

It sounds like your Ring Mountable Solar Kit is not extending the battery life of your device as expected. The solar charger should be installed in a location without obstruction from the sun where it can receive at least 3–4 hours of direct sunlight per day. For best results, install facing south if located in the northern hemisphere; install facing north if located in the southern hemisphere. You will want to fully charge the doorbell battery before installing the doorbell in the solar charger.

With 3–4 hours of direct sunlight every day, your battery doorbell can stay charged even longer than before. Battery life varies based on device settings, motion notifications, and sun exposure. When the Ring battery is over 90% charged, it will no longer take a new charge. Below 90%, it will accept a new charge. If a battery is 89% charged or below, it will charge from the solar panel.

We appreciate you taking the time to leave a review. We understand how it can be to invest in a product and not have it completely meet your expectations. Furthermore, we'd love an opportunity to discuss any concerns you may have. Our top priority at Ring is to ensure that you have the best possible experience with our products.

Based on your review, it seems that you are having trouble with your Ring Solar Charger. Ring recommends at least three to four hours of direct sunlight, depending on your usage. If your installation area is frequently very cloudy or gets a lot of rain or snow, this could limit the amount of sunlight that your solar power device receives.
The solar panel requires direct sunlight. Filtered/indirect sunlight through the clouds will not provide a charge to your doorbell/camera.
