Stunning deal of a laptop for the price

I have had the laptop for a week now. And I must tell you, I'm very impressed by it.
First thing is the bettery life, for one charge I can browsing web, doing Office work and playing Youtube videos at 30% volume and half brightness. I get around 7-8 hours of continuous use (minded that I undervolted the CPU to 150mV), that's almost tripled when compared to my old Acer Aspire E15.
Second thing, the performance. It blazes through every games I tested. Ghost Recon at high setting 75-85 fps, Fortnite 120+ fps at high, Far Cry 5 80-100 fps at High,.. it was such an enjoyable gaming experience for me personally. The heat is manageable between 75-85 degree C, and the surface is cool at palm resting area but it gets hotter when closer to the vent on each sides of the machine. The SSD comes in the laptop is a SANDISK SATA SSD, for everyday use it works just fine, the read/write speed is average for a SATA SSD which is still blazing fast when compared to HDDs. But for me 512GB is a small amount of storage so I will add a 512GB Samsung 970 EVO along the way. Which leads to upgradeability I think it's hard to get inside and upgrade the RAM and also the SSD for the first time, non-techy user, but for the experienced ones, I think it's not impossible.
Third thing is the design language. I tell you, it looks gorgeous in person with all the gold accent and stealthy (like its name) brushed aluminium finish. It's very lightweight at just 1.8kg and the thinness is only under 2cm, so carrying it around is a blessing when compared to my old not-too-bulky Acer Aspire E15. The downsides are it's a fingerprint magnet itself, you need to carry a microfiber cloth with you at all time if you want to keep it shine and clean, another thing to note that there are a little squeaky noise when press down hard at the right palm rest area, noted that this only happens when you press down really hard which is not the normal usage case scenario.
Overall, I think it is a steal for around $2000 price point, great specs come with exceptional performance, long battery life for a day work and beautiful, sleek design. The downsides are mediocre build quality for a $2000 laptop (which is unbeatable for the specs) and there are some small bugs here and there along the way such as the RGB light not working as intended (need some tweaking in Steelseries Engine 3) and the NVidia Optimus isn't switching the graphic card at the right time ( can be configured manually in the settings). Hands down the best laptop design and specs wise for the $2000 price range.

Pros:
High-end performance, perfect for gaming or for productivity.
Minimalist design.
Amazing display.
Keyboard has nice keys with a good amount of key travel.
Speakers sound excellent.
Cons:
It can get hot up near the speakers.
The body does have some flex when you push down.
I can't say much about the battery because I haven't had much of a chance to test it but so far it seems very strong.

I had to return the xps 15 2-1 and i'm glad I did. This laptop blows me away with the powerful 6 core cpu,1070 gpu, and battery. I still can't believe i'm able to game at 144 fps on high settings in something this thin light.
The cpu does get hot and will throttle a little but after it stabilizes for a couple seconds its fine. 6 cores really make a huge difference vs the typical 4.
The IPS 1080p screen is very nice although i thought i would miss the 4k screen of the xps, I don't. Its got great color and brightness. The 1080p is perfect for a laptop because all applications don't work well with 4k. The 144hz is very smooth and I never knew I needed that but i'm probably not going back to 60 again.
Also the battery life is top notch for something this gaming oriented. 6+ hours.
You can game at 30fps on battery but i wouldn't recommend for the power you get when you plug in.
Another note, it does have upgrade-ability even though the motherboard is flipped. Takes only about 10 minutes and you can have it open and out. Just go easy. After opening it up you have another m.2 nmve drive and your 2 ram slots which have 8gb samsung 2400mhz each.
I added the new samsung evo 970 m.2 1tb to the spare m.2 and cloned original to it using samsung magician software. Now its the boot drive with a spare 500gb. The samsung runs at 3200 mb/s read and 2600 mb/s write vs the sandisk that came with it running at only 500mbs. Soo much faster!

The laptop is fast, slick, works like a charm, they keyboard is awesome, you can customize it however you want, the battery holds up really well for a gaming laptop. The build quality is nice, but could be improved, the thermals are ok, but once you undervolt it they are great. Overall this machine is just awesome.

I spent 3 hours standing in Best Buy to evaluate the various laptops available. I apologized to the representative but I was torn by what I wanted to accomplish with my purchase.
I realized that I wanted something that was going to be an excellent PC while maintaining light weight. I am happy to report that this laptop meets my expectations.
Games tested after purchase:
Dota 2
Fortnite
Rainbow Six Siege
Cities: Skylines
This laptop is a beast. It destroyed these games that would often make me reduce my graphics settings to medium or lower. The heat generation is very beautifully pushed to the edges rather than below the keyboard. It seems to be able to get tons of airflow with little effort. The screen looks amazing. The colors are great.
You know what is cool that you never thought you'd need? A COLOR CHANGING KEYBOARD. My life has been altered. Everything now needs to do this.
Seriously though, this PC plays all the games that I care about on ultra. The GeForce GTX 1070 is great. The WiFi interacts nicely with my ASUS AC5300 for download/upload speeds of 500Mbps up and down. Everything about this machine seems great. Sound is good but I use headphones usually, so it's hard to give that a rating.
I can't comment on the battery life. I didn't buy it for that.
This is a beautiful machine. The reviews are right. Buy it.

Best gaming laptop in this price range

Honestly this is probably the best laptop for gaming in this price range.
Temperature: Gets fairly hot during use, but keyboard and trackpad always remain comfortable. Only the top vent area gets unusually hot, but you shouldn't be touching this area anyways. This is not the case with the Razer Blade which is so hot that even resting your fingers on the keys in uncomfortable.
Performance: Incredibly powerful. Runs WoW at 8/10 settings at about 70-144 FPS depending on the area.
Display: I wish it were a little brighter but it's no dimmer than competing displays. Not as bright as a macbook unfortunately but bright enough compared to the Razer Blade or Asus ROG's etc. Colors are vibrant and look natural. 144hz display is a god send.
Housing: Housing is a mix of aluminum and plastic pieces. Feels a little cheap compared to the unibody housing of the Macbook Pro or Razer Blade, but it's also possible that this design is much more thermally efficient since the Blade gets unbearably hot. Keyboard feels great. Trackpad isn't amazing but it's rare to find a PC trackpad to match a Mac (Razer Blade comes close but still not great).
Value: You won't find a lot of other gaming laptops with these specs (GTX 1070, 144 hz display) for this price. $2000 is a lot of a laptop but if you can afford it this is an amazing machine.

I did a lot of research before centering on this beautiful laptop. I decided to move to PC from Mac, after owning a Macbook Pro 2011 for seven years. It was a great laptop, but never had the ability to game. I also needed a serious update.
This particular MSI model, which is exclusive to BestBuy, had everything that I wanted: a sleek, stylish body which is lightweight, a high-end graphics card (1070 Max Q, newest processor (Intel i8) and a ton of SDD memory and RAM for the price point. To boot, I got mine on a special for 150 dollars off the list price of 1,999. My total ended up being around 1900 with tax, which is an incredible deal for such a powerful laptop.
I am so happy with my purchase, particularly with respect to gaming. I have played several games on it so far including Final Fantasy XV, Cities Skylines and Starcraft II. I hope to play even more games in the future, as I am getting more serious about PC gaming. I have had no problems in terms of graphical output, memory space and processing power. This laptop also has an incredible 144 Hz display refresh rate, with awesome color accuracy. It handles graphic and memory heavy games like FFXV with ease. The only downside is the heat it produces. The upper keyboard can get quite hot to the touch. However, I never feel it in the keys themselves.

Solid Gaming Purchase

Let me say this upfront; I am a bit of a tech geek. Unboxing this laptop was an exciting event for me. This IS a beautiful machine. The design aesthetic of this laptop is very subtle. It has an all black aluminum constructed body with clean lines. There are no aggressive cuts or angles like you see on many gaming laptops. This simpler design ethos appeals to me, but I'm not judging (you do you; everyone has their preference). If you like or want something that stands out then this laptop may not be for you. The all black casing has only the MSI dragon logo on the lid and some very nice gold accenting. It just looks good. Now let's talk about size. As far as gaming laptops go, this bad boy is THIN. I'd compare it to a Razer Blade Stealth or a Digital Storm Equinox in both size and design. This thin form factor does have some drawbacks. If you are looking for a powerhouse of gaming awesomeness, then this design may not be for you. You may need to consider some of those larger laptops or a desktop. Nothing can compare to the hardware (and horsepower) you can put in a desktop. But if you are willing to trade some horsepower for portability, you will not be displeased with this laptop. My initial impressions of the build quality and workmanship are high. The laptop feels good in hand. It is not "plasticee" feeling (I'm certain that is not a word) which is a plus and it is not heavy. This laptop would be easy to tote around all day. The heart of this machine is an 8th generation CORE i7 processor. It has an Nvidia GTX1070 MAXQ discrete graphics card with 8GB of GDDR5 memory. This particular build of the GS65 line comes with a 512GB SSD and 16 GB of DDR4 system memory. Some builds have as much as 32 GB of system memory and various SSD configurations (including some with RAID). With the specs included in this build this laptop is VR ready (if that is something that appeals to you). An unexpected delight is the keyboard. I thought the LED lighting effects on the keyboard would just be another thing, but I have to admit; it's kinda cool. It also allows for highlighting of individual keys based on the game you are playing or application you are running. I also like typing on this keyboard (I'm doing it right now). Some people prefer keys with a lot of spring in them. If that is you, then you should try to type on this keyboard before purchase. It is a bit less "springy" (another made up word) then some keyboards I've used. The keys have good separation and positive feel. I don't want to labor on about installed software, but one item to highlight is that MSI includes Dragon Center. Dragon Center is a utility which allows you to tweak system performance such as running up the CPU. Just know that, by design, this utility will not allow overclocking unless you are plugged in (it is what it is). I have no complaints so far and the laptop has been responsive and a pleasure to use, but I admit I have yet to run the hardware through its paces with some more intensive games.

Great gaming laptop with flaws

So I've had this laptop for a week now. I wanted to not just go of my first impression and try it out some before reviewing.
Good things:
1. It's thin and light. I mean thin and light gaming computers have been around for a couple years now. They seem to be "almost" there with the architecture. I can carry this around and not be lugged down, or really feel like I have a gaming computer.
2. Great specs. It can really crush some games, and it has pretty decent battery life. The screen is ok. I don't really care for a matte screen since I never use the laptop in the sun or with lights blaring around me.
3. It has a lot of ports for a thin and light laptop. Even Ethernet.
Cons:
1. quality: It's flimsy. Most of the laptop with flex is you push it with your finger. It's also a finger magnet. I don't get why laptop makers don't use more fingerprint resistant materials for a laptop, that people are holding and touching all day.
2. Fan noise: It's loud enough for my wife to complain about it in the other room. The laptop has a great cooling design, but the fans need to be worked on. I've bought quiet fans for my desktop, why can't laptops have quiet fans. I've noticed a trend this year with these small laptops coming out with new ways to cool them, but it's just not there yet.
3. heat: that brings me to my next point, that because it's a small form factor, it produces alot of heat in a small space, that is the reason the fans have to work so hard. I ended up undervolting and changing setting to make the laptop less powerful, just to be normal. I would have liked that from factory I had a more efficient and cool laptop.
All in all, I haven't found my perfect solution yet. I'm in that category where I would pay for a premium thin and light laptop, but there really are none. The Razer blade is touted as the premium laptop, but it's internals aren't exciting. The Asus Zephyrus is intriguing, but i've read it sucks with battery and keyboard. The alienware seems to be the best, but it's massive in size.

Very happy with my new laptop.
Good screen, good video card, and really good performance into a really light laptop.
I was also able to nicely tune this laptop with Dragon Center which allow me to play while keeping the sound of fans under control.
My only complain are the speakers which are so so...
So I would definitively recommend it to my friends!

Only spent a few hours with it so far, but my impressions are overall very positive. Beautiful, great bright screen, and super quick & responsive. Read one review that the keyboard was a little off with it sagging or bending slightly in the middle, but I haven't experienced that at all. If anything I think it's great with a decent firmness. I'm used to Lenovo T or X1 series keyboards and this is fairly similar. Only major compliant is the left/right click on touchpad, which becomes a non-issue if you get used to multi touch gestures. The fan whirl is real, but not overly loud IMO.
Main reason I picked this laptop over others with similar specs was the weight which was well worth the price. I'm extremely mobile in my job so every pound in my backpack is felt. This one is a solid 1-1.5lbs lighter than most similarly speced laptops, and my back thanks MSI for that.
If my opinion changes over the next few weeks I'll update this, but so far I'm very happy with it.

The MSI gs65 stealth thin is a beast of a gaming laptop packed into a compact body. I came from a long line of 17'' gaming laptops and finally needed to down size for portability and spent a lot of time researching 15'' laptops and for the price this was the only laptop that met my needs.
Pros
great battery life
very powerful machine
great screen, colors and refresh rate
took me a day to get used to the keyboard but i love it now
dragon center is great for setting up custom profiles for differnt games and task
its not cheap but you get a lot for your money
great looking design
cons
not easy to upgrade
thermal paste could be better
lacks sd reader but easily fixed by buying usb sd reader
some complain about its thin metal design allowing flex but i find it steardy in spots you normally apply pressure.
overall if your budget is 2k this is the laptop to buy if you need something portable and powerful. its main competitors tend to be 200 to 400 dollars more and up. You also dont tend to see its competitors in stores. its more expensive competitors benchmarks are not much better than this laptop. some companies sell this laptop already upgraded with more memorie and repasted if thats something you require.

Great Computer for Various needs

I bought this computer roughly a month ago and I have a lot of good and only little bad things to say. Essentially I bought this computer to replace my 4 year old ASUS which was becoming less and less reliable. I am about to head to law school and wanted a more portable computer without sacrificing the power required to run newer games. This is perfect for me because I can have a professional looking computer for school and a beast for at home when I game. The big pros to me are obviously the large SSD, the power of a big gaming laptop in a small compact computer, and the aesthetics of the computer, it looks beautiful.
the only con I've had so far is that the computer will get hot fast when playing games that use a lot of energy, luckily a built in app allows for monitoring of the GPU and CPU temperatures and a max cooler booster setting allowing the fans to keep up. However the fans are loud to a degree when on full blast, so I recommend buying a cooling pad with fans to make up for this which keeps the computer cool without being too loud.
Overall I would highly recommend this computer to any gamer and friends, MSI knows how to make a great one.

I always read TONS of reviews, watch videos, etc...and this laptop got raves via all avenues. It immediately made me suspicious LOL. Went to the local Best Buy, checked it out...and first thing that struck me: the beautiful build.. This IS truly a laptop you can take anywhere, from meeting to hack session to gaming night and no one will look at you like, "whaaaa...."...
Played with it, was satisfied with what I saw short term, so took it home. It only got better.
- Display is GORGEOUS. Yeah, it's only 1080, but it's 144Mhz so very snappy and the matte screen is soooooo much better than a Mac's (my other main driver) glossy...tough to go back.
- I'm a huge keyboard snob (I use a Ducky mini), and this one felt very good. Not GREAT...but very good. Much better than the keyboard on my Macbook Pro (HATE IT).
- Everything worked flawlessly. It's machines like this that make working on Windows a great experience.
Not sure what else to say. It's a bit pricey, but so are all machines of this caliber. Oh, yeah...it's LIGHT...VERY LIGHT comparatively!!!
You won't regret it!

I wanted a sleek, light weight, portable yet incredibly powerful gaming laptop for a while. After researching my options for a while, I landed on MSI GS65 Stealth Thin and I must say after using it for a couple of weeks, this machine is incredible and worth every penny! Everything from the packing to the actual in-game performance is great.
Top 3 Pros
1. This beast of a machine handle every game i throw at it with ease. Maintaining his fps without any lag, stutter or delay thanks to it's crisp 144hz refresh rate monitor, gtx 1070 and 8th gen intel i7 processor.
2. Traveling with it is so easy. Ultra light weight and sleek design makes it the best travel companion. It looks very professional while maintaining a minimalist and elegant gaming look and feel.
3. The price for this beautiful beast is pretty spot on. It's not as expensive when you put all it's features into perspective. Putting all the power in such a small, elegant package, Kudos MSI!
Ultimately, I would definitely recommend this laptop for anyone who wants a portable gaming rig. It can easily replace your desktop as well or be your business grunt machine.

Great laptop... easily the best screen I've seen on a gaming pc. Runs super smooth. keyboard is responsive and back-light is pretty cool. Best parts is this build quality on this laptop is top notch. sleek, thin, and light... all with a 1070. great job MSI!
But... 2 major issues... the speakers are located on the bottom which really lower the sound quality. Also, they made this near impossible to get inside the laptop to upgrade... it would take a legit rocket scientist to be able take this apart just to be able to add additional ram and storage.

I've read plenty of reviews while searching for a light weight portable gaming laptop. Alot them seem to complain about the durability and battery life.
While I am not surprised about the battery life/gaming performance issues when not plug it. I sort of expected it with it portability.
The Laptop does exactly what I want. I can play games like Gears of War 4 and Fortnite at maximum settings with no performace issues. Runs nearly identical to my custom build gaming desktop.
This pc was exactly want i was looking for something I can play games on (plug in of course) and the ability to be productive elsewhere.
The light weight makes it perfect travel companion.
Comparing the price to premium products with less specs is nonsense to begin with.
The only premium branded product this should be compared with razer stealth blade which is about $800 more, and the Surface book 2 (about same price but inferior graphic card).
Most other laptops move into another range as they get either pretty bulky or the specs (graphic card) are way inferior.
Although I dislike the track pad completely. This is probably my personal issue. I also hated the experience on every other laptop i owned. It feels like it doesn't want to click properly.
